Book Description

The Van Der Byl Diamond Company, willed by its founder to his son Benedict, daughter Tracey and estranged foster-child Johnny Lance, turns out to be a bequest not of love, but of hatred. For it is couched in such terms as to offer Benedict an instrument of destruction of his bitterest rival. 'Destroy Johnny' was the old man's implacable message to his son, and, obsessively jealous of his foster-brother, Benedict sets out in ruthless pursuit of this goal.

In a desperate bid to support Johnny, Tracey acquires for him the concession in the diamond-rich seabed round the coral islands of Thunderbolt and Suicide off the savage South West African coast, and Johnny throws all his resources into the construction of a vessel that will recover the stones from the ocean floor and repair his fortune at last. But Benedict, already involved in illegal diamond-dealing as a sideline, seizes this chance to attack his rival and, with a network of accomplices and some ingenious electronic tampering, plots to syphon off the diamonds. Johnny will not only be ruined by his liabilities, he will also be a laughing stock.

However, Benedict's obsessive jealousy is his undoing. He cannot resist stripping his rival of his beautiful but bitchy wife Ruby as well, and when he then discards her, she takes her revenge, precipitating a climax of murder and destruction that consumes Benedict at last.

Narrated with Wilbur Smith's irresistible driving thrust, this is a tale of brotherly hatred, redeemed only by the deepening love between Johnny and Tracey. It is set in London, Cape Town, on the thunderous seas around the ocean diamond fields and ends in a final confrontation between Johnny and Benedict in the blistering hyena-infested desert.

5 out of 5 stars A spellbinding action/adventure, tale.......2006-08-13

I have seen Wilbur Smith novels on the bookshelves for years but for one reason or another none of them had ever really piqued my interest, but while browsing in an airport bookstore looking for something to read on a long flight I picked this one up and as I began to read I found that my flight was too short. I didn't want to be interrupted for something as trivial as changing flights. I intend to read more Wilbur Smith in the near future.

The way Smith builds the story of Johnny Lance being an outcast and the way that he discovers the truth about his childhood and the animosity that builds between him and his foster brother Benedict Van der Byle makes for a spellbinding read. Smith's descriptions of the African landscape and exotic locations are well written without being over-done. When he describes Thunderbolt and Suicide you can smell the salt air and see the foamy spray shooting skyward and hear the crashing of the huge waves against the unyielding rock formations.

Like all fiction stories this one is not for everyone, but if you enjoy action/adventure, emphasis on action you will find this a very enjoyable read.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2006-05-19

Wilbur Smith just proves how good he is this is a must read book with characteristics of betrayal and loyalty coming into the fray. The ending was not finished strongly but never the less another work of art by Wilbur Smith

4 out of 5 stars Early Wilbur Smith, prelude of great things to come........2006-01-21

This novel was written over 30 years ago. It is not as polished as his newer books but it contains all the elements that make Smith one of the masters of action and adventure. Exotic locale, unforgettable characters and a prose that takes you `there'.

Let Wilbur take you to a trip to Africa, you will be coming back for more.

4 out of 5 stars The Real Deal.......2005-02-21

The descriptions of diamond mining and sorting are as good as it gets. An updated version would be Robinson's, Sapphire Sea, set in Madagascar.

2 out of 5 stars The Diamond Hunters.......2002-11-23

This book is one of Wilbur Smith's early books and it shows.
After reading his books set in ancient Egypt, I bought this thinking it would be a good read. He spent too much time on the relationships and too little time on the meat of the story which should have been the search for the elusive diamonds. I was able to finish it but was very disappointed particularly with the ending. It was as if he ran out of steam or got into a hurry. The ending in the book just left you wishing that he would have given you a little more to tie up the loose ends. Not a bad book but, not a great one either.

Diamond Assets By Ruth D. Kerce Hunter Dunlap, co-owner of Everlasting Love, wants nothing to do with romance since his wife left him for his assistant—a woman. His new assistant, Ronni Strickland, is perfect with her big glasses and strict appearance, because she's not his type. On Valentine's Day, while they are checking out a resort for the company, Hunter discovers they're booked into a section called Bondage Bay. Now he's looking at Ronni with new eyes and a need to discover what she's hiding under that all-business exterior of hers. Diamond In the Rough By Ruby Storm With a stroke of Cupid's red pen, Claire Holliday and Brian Valentine's lives are changed forever. Two lonely people, each coping with emotional wounds, and believing wholeheartedly that exceptional love and fiery passion will forever be beyond their reach. Little do they know that love cannot be suppressed. The heated touch of shared acceptance can capture the wounded heart and magically heal it. Who's to know what force really brings lonely souls together. It could be simple fate, or maybe Cupid actually exists, and continually stands guard over our hearts. Diamond In the Snow By Diana Hunter When a sudden snowstorm unexpectedly gives her the afternoon off from school, all Carolyn Brooks intends is a night at home grading papers. But when her car slides off the road, Paul Anderson—an arrogant but gorgeous man who is head of the English department—rescues her. He takes her to his home, and Carolyn finds herself drawn to this modern knight. But Paul has a secret…and determines the petite elementary schoolteacher is too delicate a flower for his dark tastes. He knows what she does not. That he is not the White Knight, but the Black.

If you are looking for three stories that will take you through the spectrum of emotions then you will not want to miss this wonderful anthology by three very talented authors who tied this story together with three college buddies who decide to have the same...well...I really can't tell you the rest, but if you want to know how this anthology got its name and how the stories of these three men are tied into the other, I guess you'll have to read it! *wink*

DIAMOND ASSETS by Ruth D. Kerce -- http://www.ruthkerce.com/ --- 4 Stars

Get comfortable before you sit down to read how sexual tension stretches so tight between the co-owner of Everlasting Fantasy, Inc. and his personal assistant that the culmination of finding love when and where they least expect it will be sure to fulfill any boss-seduces-secretary fantasy you've ever had. From the first word, this light BDSM story will pull you in and leave you reading the last with sigh of fulfillment.

Hunter knows that behind Roni's prim and proper façade, is a sensual vixen just wanting to be let out to play, he also knows that mixing business with pleasure could be a big mistake, but there is no denying his body's lustful reactions and he decides that he wants nothing more than to uncover the sensuality she's been holding in, and he starts by convincing Roni to go with him to the fantasy resort that Everlasting Love, Inc. is considering investing in. Once they are checked into their room located in the Bondage Bay section of the resort, the sexual tension explodes into the fulfillment all of their long withheld fantasies, and they both know that this short time they have together will never be enough.

DIAMOND IN THE SNOW by Diana Hunter-- http://www.dianahunter.net/ --- 3-1/2 stars

This is a titillating tale of trust, acceptance, and the ultimate discovery of love destined to be as brilliant as a beautiful dusting of a "Diamond in the Snow".

Carolyn Brooks is very secure with and embraces her sexuality wholeheartedly. When the beautiful winter wonderland that is falling down around her produces the one thing that will complete who she is, the one thing she never dreamed she'd find, she intends to do everything she can to keep him, even if it means tempting the beast. When Paul rescues Carolyn from the snowbank that her car plunged into during a blizzard and takes her to his home to wait it out, the last thing he expects is for his nature to be brought out and embraced by the sexy little complication of a woman who insists on feeding the dominant beast she's let loose by giving him her ultimate submission.

DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH by Ruby Storm -- http://www.rubystorm.net/ ---- 5 stars

This is a masterfully woven tale of two inexperienced and overzealous fairies and their laugh out loud hilarious antics as they get sidetracked by pixie lust while on a mission that, if successful, will earn them their gold wings... their mission... bringing together a man and woman who have both been tragically thrust into a world of loneliness, pain and insecurity, and who never dreamed they would find the soul wrenching healing and love that can only be compared to a "Diamond in the Rough" about to be cut and polished into the brilliant gem that it's meant to be. While reading this phenomenal story, I found myself laughing so hard one minute and the next wanting to cry for the heartache these two wonderfully tenderhearted people have gone through.

With their mission needing to be completed by Valentine's Day, Rosebud's almost frantic enthusiasm stretches Larry's patience so far that after shooting Brian Valentine with the first of two magic arrows Cupid gave them in the arsenal of weapons to be used in their quest of the gold wings, Larry accidentally shoots Rosebud with the second and it turns her into a wild and wanton little sprite who isn't about to let him deny her the pleasure she knows is throbbing for release inside of those green spandex tights he's wearing, even if it means forfeiting their gold wings. Meanwhile Brian and Claire discover an immediate affinity in one another's presence and it only grows stronger while they are working on Claire's garden together. As the heart-wrenchingly emotional and physical tragedies of their past and present lives unfold, Brian fights the continuing battle of insecurities left in the quake of a tragic accident that left more than just his body scarred. Thank Cupid for Claire's insightful wisdom that allows her to "see" through not only her own insecurities but Brian's as well, and for Brian's strength of character that allows the deeply imbedded seedling mixture of trust, acceptance, and healing to be nurtured to fruition in the form of love.

****

"Diamond Assets" was my first story by Ruth D. Kerce and I found it to be a fun and sexy light BDSM story that had me wishing for a little office tryst of my very own, I'll be sure to look out for books from this author in the future. "Diamond in the Snow" by Diana Hunter was well worth reading because it had a good BDSM plot, but I also feel that the male character was as a very emotionally weak person and would never have cast him as the dominate man that the plot tried to portray him to be. "Diamond in the Rough" is a very original story with deeply developed characters, and penned by the phenomenal author Ruby Storm, and it is by far the funniest story I've ever read, and on the other end of the spectrum it is the most heart wrenching.

3 out of 5 stars Day Of The Unicorn Book Review.......2005-04-29

I liked Day Of The Unicorn. I liked it because I love horses and unicorns! I also liked it because it hooked me on to it very well by using very descriptive words. One of the reasons I only gave it 3 stars is because it didn't have enough details. Also, it did not stay on one topic long enough and I think the author could have written a much longer book which gave you a lot more information. Another reason I liked it is because it had a lot of fantasy and was very imaginative. I think a lot of other kids will like this book because it is easy to understand what is happening. Also, it is very easy to tell who is who. All in all I think Day of the Unicorn was a pretty good book.

1 out of 5 stars Not So Much With The Funny.......2007-07-28

From the other reviews I pretty much expected a bunch of things that you could literally carry out with a little planning, kind of like Penn & Teller's book Cruel Tricks for Dear Friends. As near as I can figure, those reviews were written by the authors' entire circle of friends.

What you get instead is a barely-sorted list of surrealist nonsense that tries way, WAY too hard to be funny and fails nearly every time. I have to confess that I smiled at a couple of the entries, but this is not the laugh-out-loud book that I thought it would be.

                4 out of 5 stars Seriously funny.......2007-07-09

Very, very funny little book for those with a quirky sense of humor on what not to do in social situations. Maybe not for everyone, but it may make you giggle into a mild sweat the whole length of an airplane ride.

1 out of 5 stars A bunch of stoners trying to make a buck!.......2007-06-08

Stupid! I don't know how I got suckered into this. I thought it might be fun for my ESL class but I'd be too embarrased to read or more or less show it to anyone!

5 out of 5 stars because you were meaning to quit your job and alienate you neighbors anyway.......2006-12-10

This is a pretty small unassuming book-shaped-object (about the size of a cd case and only about 100 pages long) but it certainly packs a wallop.

It's basically a collection of lists of asinine things you can do to make certain situations a tab bit more interesting for you and loads more uncomfortable for others.

Very funny. Even if you decided you don't want to be exiled from polite society and thereby refrain from doing any suggested activity in the book, it's lots of fun to *imagine* yourself doing them.

4 out of 5 stars In appreciation of the unexpected!.......2005-04-03

Nonsense, though usually an annoyance, has proven itself to be quite useful. Nonsense breaks the monotony and stale routine of day to day life. It makes things interesting. It's only an annoyance when you are on the receiving end. When delivering, nonsense is a powerful tool for humor, manipulation, and self-entertainment. And that's where this book finds its place in the world.
Everyday (and not-so-everyday) situations can be turned into memorble events with a little help from this book. Learn the most innapropriate yet humorous gobbledygook to spout when things take a turn into Dullsville. For example- Things to Do to Annoy Alex Trebek if You're on Jeopardy: 1.)Phrase answers in unconventional question forms: "Is it..."; "Would it happen to be..."; "Do you suppose maybe it is..."; "What in the Sam Hill is..." 3.) Call Alex "Wink." 6.) Answer, "What is a pompous Canadian who over-articulates?"
An excellent springboard for wacky ideas, this book should leave you with a general appreciation for amphigory and knowledge of how to apply it into your life.

But his dream of the quiet life is shattered when he locks horns with Miss Beta Harcher, the town's prize religious fanatic, in a battle over censorship. 5 out of 5 stars Great Debut novel.......2006-08-13

This is a terrific debut novel by author Jeff Abbott.
Jordy Poteet is a fun protaganist in a small Texas town filled
with interesting, quirky characters. Many mystery novels take themselves too seriously or result to silly romance or plot funtions that interupt the plot of the novel. Abbott thankfully
keeps the action flowing, the mystery intriging and best of all,
sprinkles each chapter with enough good humor to humanize the situations. I read a lot of mysteries and usually the lead
"detective" is portrayed too bland or disfunctional. Abbott
however, creates a full fledged three dimensional character
with Jordy Poteet. You like him and feel for him. He's the type
of guy to have a beer or coffee with. Bravo Jeff Abbott for
this humorous, exciting and fun novel. Keep em coming!

                5 out of 5 stars New Fan..........2005-10-18

So, one of the off-topic threads in one of my forums a couple of weeks ago was 'favorite mystery series.' And this guy Jeff Abbott and his character Jordy Poteet come up.

Intriguing, I think. I'll pick one up.

I'm just enchanted! I've fallen hard for Jordy, Candace and the rest of them--I admit a particular soft spot for Miss Eula.

What I like best about this novel is the first person POV--you as the reader only know as much as Jordan himself finds out, and you learn it at the same time he does. Often first person can be a pain in the neck voice where mysteries are concerned, but Jordan is such a charmer and such a fully inhabited person that I found myself hoping it would take him a little longer to find the truth--I wasn't ready to give up this character.

Something else I loved was that while there was a focus on the mystery, it wasn't the sole focus of the book. Jordan's a guy trying to live a very difficult and stressful life, but who has this incorrigible need to meddle, even when he's pretty much cleared partway thru the book. This makes the real strength of this novel Abbott's characters, rather than his plot. And I think it makes it a much better read overall.

if you want a tense, hard hitting mystery, this won't be the book for you. But if you're more interested in people than plots, give this a try.

Me, I have 7 more of Jeff Abbott's books on my nightstand right now, and I can't wait to keep reading.

3 out of 5 stars Almost likable, but it didn't add up for me........2005-02-07

I managed to stay with it to the last page, but I was tempted to abandon "Do Unto Others" several times.

Most of the characters are stereotypical and not credible, and the book left me wishing I were finished long before I reached the end.

The murder victim is an over-the-top whacked-out nut-job fundamentalist Christian who attends a Southern Baptist Church. Whatever good or ill anyone may think of fundamentalist Christians in general and Southern Baptists in particular, this character's deeds, words, and thoughts do not match the doctrinal philosophy of the denomination she's supposed to have been a part of for many years.

When the murder occurs in the public library, the librarian is the chief suspect, but he operates as though the facility is his private business, and the only city official who makes an appearance is the police chief.

The police chief is dimwitted but well-meaning, the DA is too stupid to tie his shoes, and the killer transforms from mild-mannered and ordinary into a shrewd, powerful uber-villain faster than Superman ever changed into a cape and leotard.

Incidentally, the protagonist works awfully hard to convince readers he's heterosexual, but I thought he protested too much.

The basic plot and subplots are little better than mediocre and the characters are too contrived for me to care what happens to them.

Oddly enough, the two characters I liked the most (I can't name them without revealing too much) are used by the author as minor red herrings and then abandoned when they are no longer needed to enlarge the list of potential killers.

Someone gave me four of the books in this series. I read this one (I believe the first) and page one of the second book, and then reminded myself life is too short to spend it reading books that ring as false as this one does, so I returned them politely and and suggested maybe someone else would enjoy them.

After reading the cover blurbs, I was delighted to discover the series, and I expected to like the book very much, but it was a total disappointment. If I'd actually bought my copy, I'd have been irritated that it was such a waste of money.

5 out of 5 stars Even The Mysteries Are Big In Texas.......2004-10-05

This series-starter from mystery novelist Jeff Abbott is a remarkably engaging book about life in small-town America. It involves the hapless adventures of one Jordan Poteet, a rising star in the publishing industry who suddenly has to give up his promising career, in order to come back home and help his sister care for their failing mother. No sooner has he settled into his new job as the manager of the Mirabeau, Texas, Public Library than an extremly unlikeable battle-axe by the name of Beta Harcher has the gall to get herself murdered in the ante-room to his office. Jordy quickly finds himself labeled suspect number one, and its up to him to clear his name. In his efforts to find the real killer, though, Jordy unearths a seemingly bottomless pit of terrible secrets, some of them even connected to himself and his own family.

Though the book is generally advertised as being a comedy, that is only partly true. As the work progresses the story takes on darker and darker tones, and the jokes finally get laid aside altogether. In the end, the reader mainly remembers the tension, suspense and fluid prose that turn this first novel into an all-night reading experience. Highly recommended.

                3 out of 5 stars Action-packed but stereotypical..........2004-06-18

Jeff Abbott's "Do Unto Others" is certainly an impressive mystery debut, but while the thrills add to the story, many stereotypical "small-town" characters subtract from it. Basically, according to this book: all "Christian" characters are hypocrites, extortionists or psychotic killers. The more interesting(and sympapathetic ones) is a Vietnam vet/drug dealer, a car salesman with a dirty secret(one of this book's better subplots), and a nurse character. This book does realisticly portray Alzheimer's, so that's a plus. 3 stars

                  Book Description

A Holocaust survivor and sociologist sheds light on, and celebrates, the motivations behind the benevolent actions of ordinary people.

A passing motorist stops to help the passengers of a car that has crashed into an embankment. A hospice volunteer begins her shift in hospital ward caring for people with AIDS. A Vietnam chopper pilot stops the brutal execution of innocent civilians at Mylai by American soldiers. A firefighter responds to a routine call. All of these people are considered heroes, but what motivates such brave and altruistic acts, whether by trained professionals or just ordinary people?

In Do Unto Others, Holocaust survivor and sociologist Samuel Oliner explores what gives an individual a sense of social responsibility, what leads to the development of care and compassion, and what it means to put the welfare of others ahead of one's own. Having been saved himself from the Nazis at age 16 as the result of one non-Jewish family's altruism, Oliner has made a lifelong study of the nature of altruism. Weaving together moving personal testimony and years of observation, Oliner makes sense of the factors that elicit altruistic behavior - exceptional acts by ordinary people in ordinary times.

I was delighted with this well written volume on how doing kindnesses for others can change your life. As both a Rabbi and psychiatrist, Twerski offers meaning and insight to life situations that may often be perceived as hopeless. Written in very breif stories, Rabbi Twerski reaches out to us with a certain knowledge that giving to others enhances our own lives because we receive when we give. I highly recommend this book, and I plan to use the lessons for discussions in my own practice of counseling.

                  2 out of 5 stars Lacking.......2005-08-30

Count me among the lucky few who picked this book up from the library rather than buying it from the store. The premise of the book is interesting, but the execution falls far short.

The lead character is a childless middle-aged married woman,Zena, who regrets never having had a child. She met an African girl named Ifa at one of her social club meetings and learns that the girl's visa is about to expire. Taking pity on the girl's plight, Zena and her husband take Ifa in while the husband tries to get the visa extended.

Zena is a successful business owner, yet we are supposed to believe that she is gullible enough to allow a stranger to stay in her home for weeks. The girl is greedy, arrogant & sneaky. Still, the couple tolerate her behavior and look on her as a daughter of sorts. That just seemed unrealistic.

True, there are plenty of stereotypes in this book and I did wonder why the author had to take it so far with the religious things, but as far as Ifa's attitude goes, there are plenty of Africans who look down on those of us born in the United States. I met many of them when I was in college. Heck, I encountered one just a few weeks ago.

The author did go overboard with all of Ifa's bad attributes because if the girl were all that bad, then it would make no sense for the couple to put up with her. It's not like the girl was family, and you don't form a deep attachment to people that quickly.

This was a quick read, so it wasn't a huge waste of my time. Still, I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone.

1 out of 5 stars Do unto others.......2003-03-27

This was, by far, one of the worst books I have read. Ifa was a very ungrateful girl and I would not have put up with her foolishness for one day. And, Zena, should have listened to her best friend as she was right from the very beginning. Zena's husband wasn't the greatest either, I would second guess him if I were her. I would not recommend this book to anyone, even if they had nothing else to do.

                  1 out of 5 stars Not Good.......2002-11-06

The only thing I can say about this book is it has a nice cover. I let one of my friends read it thinking maybe it's just me. But she also felt the same way. I do not recommend this book at all.

                  5 out of 5 stars I liked it........2002-10-15

Even though this book is receiving less acclaim than I expected, the book was a little better than I expected. Ifa, that African girl, made me angry with her superiority. I think the author has only reflected upon her realities perhaps. So of course not all African people are arrogant. But in my own experience, alot of Africans have had arrogant attitudes. And I can see how Africans in general think Black Americans are lazy. Which is true to a certain extent.

                  4 out of 5 stars ok.......2001-07-17

Do unto others is the story of zena, who open her and husband's house to a beatiful africa girl Ifa, who's in need of housing. She does this even with warning's from her best friend Vy that Ifa was up to know good. I throught the book was good.
