Book Description
Julia, Megan, Donna, Grace, and Vinnie are cross-country friends who are about to begin work on a challenge quilt. A piece of fabric is divided among the women, with the understanding that the following year they will all meet at the Elm Creek Quilt Camp to sew the sections together into a single quilt. But the friends have set themselves a special challenge: no one can start working on her block until she has taken steps to solve her problems and achieve her personal goals.
Although they share a common creative objective, the Cross-Country Quilters find their friendship tested by the demands of everyday life. Yet despite differences in age, race, and background, the women's love of quilting and affection for one another unite them. The quilt they create becomes a symbol of the threads that hold their lives together-a glorious patchwork of caring and loyalty that brings home an enduring truth: Friends may be separated by great distance, but the strength of their bond can transcend any obstacle.
Download Description
Readers of The Quilter's Apprentice and Round Robin have been enchanted by Elm Creek Quilt Camp, where women gather each year for quilting, friendship, and fun. The third in the Elm Creek Quilts series introduces the "Cross Country Quilters", a group of farflung friends who pledge to complete a "challenge quilt" -- symbolic of each woman's personal goals -- before they meet again in one year's time. The five women who arrive at Elm Creek Manor hope to find in their quilt lessons escape from the problems they left at home. As the year goes by, their bonds are tested, but despite differences in age, race, and background, the friends' love for quilting and affection for one another bind them together in a patchwork of caring and acceptance. Eventually they learn the serendipity of their choice. Earlene Fowler, author of Mariner's Compass and Seven Sisters, has described the Elm Creek Quilts series as "full of homespun wisdom and the joys and sorrows shared by women everywhere". The Cross Country Quilters builds on these themes, as its heroines discover, as true friends must, how to stitch the pieces of their lives into a unified whole.

The Cross-Country Quilters.......2007-02-13
This book was very good. I liked they way the quilting was weaved into the lives of the characters. The characters seemed so real. I enjoyed it immensely. It has helped me get motivated to get more of my projects done. I plan on reading more books by this author.
Extension of fun and expansion of characters.......2007-01-12
The third book in the series that adds to the characters of the Elm Creek Quilter's story. It draws one into the group of quilters as their personal stories are expanded. This book leaves you wanting to know more about your new friends!
A very womanly focus, on woman's life in various aspects.......2006-05-23
Chiaverini has moved away in this novel, from a focus on the women at Elm Creek Quilts, to some of the women who visit the camp each summer. A group whose problems unite them in a loose way, they come together at the camp and form the cross-country Quilters. After their week at quilt camp they share a peice of fabric. It is going to be made into a quilt, but they are not allowed to make it into a square until they have solved the problems which have caused them to 'escape' so to speak. They decide they will keep in touch during the year and support one another where they can.
There is some background provided to some of the women, Vinnie, the oldest member of the group, and participant in Elm Creek Quilts, then there is Megan, Donna, and Julia (a movie star.) Each have their own secrets and their own way of trying to cope - from a life of a betrayal by an ex-husband, to a daughter trapped in an increasingly controlled and abusive relationship - and a little surrealistically - a movie star who comes to quilt camp to learn how to quilt, only to find the gentle story of pioneer woman's struggles turned into an action flick called Prairie Vengeance.
There are some genuinely good moments in these and the women's problems are generally simple, straightforward issues. They do not have unrealistic lives - their needs and support are easy to relate to. What I find hard, at times, is the quick resolve which seems to happen, or perhaps it would be truer to say the almost unseemly segue to a finish. So Julia the movie star walks out of the movie but suddenly finds that she will be a star anyway in an all too-easy conclusion. Megan suddenly is getting married and Donna's daughter is hauled out of the relationship but does not pine to go back.
Now some of this grates on me a bit, on the other hand I do like reading about small things in women's lives, the very minor problems (well they are generally) and the focus on a quilt which in the end the group comes together at Elm Creek to piece together. And that is lovely. A lovely way to finish things.
Awesome book!.......2006-05-09
This is a great book about a diverse group of women that meet each other at a quilters camp and continue their friendship after they leave. Each lives a different life with their own problems they are trying to resolve. Quilting is their common ground which brings them together and helps to continue their friendship! A great book to read!
terrific.......2005-08-09
Author is a good story teller who knows quilting and quilters. I couldn't put the book down and must read all the others in the series.

This should be your first Pedal steel book.......2007-01-19
Pedal steel guitar is one of the most beautiful sounding instruments, but also one of the hardest to learn. This book helps you get started on a very complex instrument. I was amazed how quickly I was making good sounding music. I highly recommend this book for anyone starting out on pedal steel.
Classic and thorough book about the pedal steel guitar.......2006-07-25
This book is an excellent introduction and guide for anyone who is interested in learning about the pedal steel guitar.Although it is now somewhat dated,it still contains a vast amount of useful knowledge about this unusual instrument. In addition to providing a brief history of the instrument,it includes some minimal instruction, maintenance tips, choosing an instrument, and a wealth of other topics. It also offers info about the different players of the instrument, their tunings(copedants) and lots of photos. The pedal steel guitar is indeed a curious instrument and this book walks you through step by step to help you understand what it's all about.
Practically every steel player has read it or knows about it.
Excellent.......2006-03-15
Although written 30 years ago, this book is still very timely and informative. I would recommend it very highly for the person who wishes to learn to play the pedal steel guitar. It can also be very useful for the student who has started to play but has not reached the level he/she wishes.
A MUST HAVE RESOURCE!!!!!!!!.......2006-02-17
This is the 2nd copy of this book that I have purchased. The first copy was purchased when the book was 1st released and this new copy is to replace the original which I "loaned" to a student. Now I have the examples on CD instead of that little floppy record that came with the 1st copy! LOL
Anyone wanting to get started learning how to play pedal steel should have this book and read it cover to cover, again and again. Just about the 1st work on this subject and still one of the best ever written, thanks Winnie.
Best Introduction to Pedal Steel.......2000-03-13
There is nothing that compares with this book. It explains how the instrument works, teaches you how to play it, and introduces the reader to the culture of steel guitarists. Plenty of old pictures of the great players, and an appendix of their tunings (as of 1975!). I can't recommend this book highly enough.
Product Description
This book is an excellent study of the history and unique musical stylings of the Hawaiian guitar. Stacy Phillips successfully pinpoints the characteristics of Hawaiian guitar solos. A special feature is the inclusion of a superb historical survey of Hawaiian music. Written in tablature only, G tuning. DeWitt Scott comments: "There are two types of Hawaiian music, the 'authentic' style and the 'tourist' style. Stacy is presenting the 'authentic' style and this is much needed to keep the Hawaiian music alive."

You Can Go Home Again.......2000-12-21
At age nine I made my first recording, playing a medley of Hawaiian and American songs on my Hawaiian Steel Guitar. After 60+ years, and still with the motivation to please my mother, I've picked up a Decca Steel Guitar, as my own, for the first time in all these musically-quiet years. Without this magical book by Stacy Phillips, it'd be virtually impossible to move that studio to my shop and "pick up where I left off." Of course, this book's perfect for the rank beginner BUT, beyond that, it's just the thing for an old codger who has to work his way UP to rank beginner.

Book Description
They say you meet all kinds when you're driving a hack. That's certainly the case for Boston PI Carlotta Carlyle, who gets an unexpected fare while moonlighting behind the wheel. It's singer Dee Willis, Carlotta's ex-friend and former band mate, who stole Carlotta's man before clawing her way up the charts.Dee's made the leap from Southie's barrooms to the cover of People magazine, but now she's back in Carlotta's life, bringing with her a load of trouble. She hires Carlotta to track down a mutual friend who's fallen on hard times, but Carlotta soon finds that there's a far more menacing tune being played. Someone is blackmailing Dee, claiming she stole songwriting credits-and the money and fame that came with them. As the spotlight's glare turns as cold as the corpse that turns up in Dee's hotel room, Carlotta's past is about to catch up to her....with a vengeance.

Tall Carlotta Solves the Mystery (with a little help from her friends).......2006-07-29
I enjoyed this little book a lot, and looked forward to coming back to it after putting it down for a while.
This is the first book I have read by this author. Everything takes place in Boston. That was fun for me, because I lived there for a few years, but I had forgotten the geography.
The "Steel Guitar" is a song, and guitars are like little Gods among this crowd that Carlotta used to belong to, and still does in some ways. Dee Willis is the goddess of the steel guitar, having learned from an old blues man, the Reverend Gary something.
Anyway, all of that was just background for the real mystery: Who is trying to blackmail Dee? Or is she herself in on the scam?
The only part that raised my eyebrows was the night, at midnight, when Carlotta noted that the Red Sox game was held up because of rain, and would be called by 1 if it did not stop. Does this mean if the rain had stopped, the Red Sox would have started the game at midnight?
Well, only a baseball aficionado would care about something like that.

Satisfying.......2006-02-22
Admittedly, I am a late comer to the Carlotta series, but this was one of my favorites. This particular plot forced Carlotta to face her past and exposed some uncomfortable feelings - jealousy of Dee. The interaction with her ex was necessary and helped her come to terms with her current feelings. I thought it was a very moving story with a very poignant ending.
Weak effort.......2005-03-25
Of the Carlotta mysteries I've read so far, this is easily the weakest effort. I've often read aloud from some of the other novels in this series to my partner. The language in this particular novel is somewhat awkward and doesn't roll of the tongue easily like some of the other novels. The plot plods along and the supporting characters are dull and uninteresting. I've never felt that the Carlotta's blues hobby was very realistic and it certainly can't hold a novel together. Even the appearance of Carlotta's ex-husband doesn't spice things up much. Perhaps I have a bias against musicians (the ones I've known have generally been narcissistic and boring). Syncronistically, just before this novel, I had just read the Sue Grafton novel in which Kinsey's musician ex-husband makes an appearance. However, Sue Grafton makes it work and really uses his appearance to reveal something about Kinsey's character. In Steel Guitar, the ex is just someone else for Carlotta to boink. I've only managed to plod through about three quarters of the novel. I just don't really care very much how it turns out.
Carlotta confronts her past.......2004-08-24
Carlotta Carlyle gets a surprise customer in her taxi one night. It's Dee Willis, a famous singer, who used to be Carlotta's best friend until she stole Carlotta's husband from her. Dee now needs Carlotta's help in finding Davey, a mutual friend of theirs. Davey is accusing Dee of stealing songs which he wrote and passing them off as her own. Carlotta's investigation brings her in contact with several old friends, including her ex-husband. As usual, she is conflicted about her love life, which in this book includes three different men. As in her other books, Linda Barnes writes an interesting tale with a good plot and well-defined characters.
Not the best.......2003-02-16
I'm not wild about Carlotta's blues hobby -- it seems too forced -- so an entire book centered around it wasn't exactly a page-turner. Karen Kijewski did the "old friend is a big-time musician with a problem" better in the Kat Colorado series.
I also found the mystery, and the culprit, to be vague. It's a good series, but this definitely wasn't one of the better installments.

Very nice and educational.......2007-06-27
I have not yet completed this book but what i have read is really good. I don't think that i could have replicated everything in this book without having listened to the CD that comes with it. Some parts the author hasn't written that there is a slide to the next note but on the CD you can hear it, so some is incomplete but i would still recommend it for beginners.
It's What You Need.......2005-08-25
Wanna play country licks on the 6-string lap steel? You have a problem. There are few basic works to begin with; Mel Bay's main title uses an E7th tuning and insists that you learn to sight-read music; Cindy Cashdollar's DVDs are expensive and are designed around the 8-string guitar; everything else focuses on Hawaiian music. Scott's book is for 6-string guitars, uses the country-friendly C6th tuning, and lays everything out in tabulature (in addition to regular music notation), so you can play without having to read music. Best of all, the songs are all country and folk oriented, and there are sections focused on country fills and runs. And the acommpanying CD lets you hear many of the songs and play along with a rhythm track. Get a copy, and start whinin'.
Product Description
Now complete in one volume, this time-honored method addresses the six-string lap steel guitar in E7 tuning. This approach incorporates both note reading and melody chord playing. The melody chord approach is the one utilized and made famous by New Orleans' great guitarist and teacher, Roger Filiberto. This book contitutes one of the most practical, well-written methods available for the lap steel guitar; it teaches techniques and chord harmony applicable to Hawaiian, bottleneck/slide and even resonator styles.

Great drawings and plans.......2005-12-12
I built a guitar using the drawings and ideas on this CD. The guitar looks great and works perfect. I took the plans for the mechanism to a machine shop and had them made. I really like my guitar. I am considering building a double neck.
Money down the drain..........2005-09-03
This is a big disappointment. Not Mac-compatible, which is not stated anywhere on the disc or sleeve. V-e-r-y slow even on a fast PC, with a messy, un-intuitive interface. Some design suggestions are highly questionable, drawings are non-standard with very few measurements, some are of very poor quality.
Book Description
With its steel guitars, Opry stars, and honky-tonk bars, country music is an American original. The most popular music in America today, it’s also big business. Amazing, then, that country music has been so little studied by critics, given its predominance in American culture. Reading Country Music acknowledges the significance of country music as part of an authentic American heritage and turns a loving, critical eye toward understanding the sweep of this peculiarly American phenomenon.
Bringing together a wide range of scholars and critics from literature, communications, history, sociology, art, and music, this anthology looks at everything from the inner workings of the country music industry to the iconography of certain stars to the development of distinctive styles within the country music genre. Essays include a look at the shift from "hard-core" to "soft-shell" country music in recent years; Johnny Cash as lesbian icon; gender, class, and region in Dolly Parton’s star image; and bluegrass’s gothic tradition. Originally published as a special issue of South Atlantic Quarterly, this expanded book edition includes new articles on the spirituality of Willie Nelson, the legacy and tradition of stringed music, and the revival of Stephen Foster’s blackface musical, among others.

Customer Reviews:
Some great factual material for learning Country guitar.......2007-02-04
This is the kind of book that I wish I'd had 30 years ago. It shows real-world examples of how to play pedal steel parts on the guitar and the material is accessible and reasonable. You don't have to stop your life and devote months to learning the all of the examples because they are all useful on their own and compliment each other well. Forest Rodgers comes across as a friendly, helpful player that treats you as a peer, sort of like meeting a friendly player in a music store and having him show you some neat ideas.
If you can find a copy of the video by the same name by all means do so. The two are a perfect compliment to one another and the presentation of the video is both entertaining and informative.
Review of Pedal Steel Licks Book.......2007-01-12
This book is a very good reference for usable pedal steel licks. SOme of the simplest steel licks are correctly omitted and some ofthe better ones are here. This book assumes that you can play fairly well and string bending to the correct tone is not a problem. The examples on the CD are clear, although I would redo the introductory tune since I didn't think it represented the licks that well. I would suggest that these licks be transposed to your favorite country keys of A, C, D ,E and practiced on several different string sets so they become part of your everyday playing.
