Meet Ashley Patterson, the brainy, babelicious "computer whiz" and confused heroine of Tell Me Your Dreams. Although she has a cushy job at Global Computer Graphics, a fast-growing start-up in Silicon Valley, her life falls short of fulfilling. She's lonely, shy, and absolutely convinced she's being stalked. What's worse, the only sympathetic ear around is her father, Dr. Patterson, the heartless heart surgeon, who has the charm of an electric eel and the compassion of a tarantula. Given her options, Ashley looks to the heavens for support and offers up an ultimatum to the Almighty: "I'll make a deal with you, God. If it doesn't rain, it means that everything is all right, that I've been imagining everything." Of course, it starts raining buckets just paragraphs later, setting off a car alarm of an omen about our computer cutie's fate.

Enter Toni Prescott and Alette Peters. They both work with Ashley at Global Computer Graphics, but the similarities end there. Toni is a saucy, British vixen with a penchant for Internet dating and discotheques. La bella Italiana Alette, on the other hand, is a wannabe artist who prefers quiet, dreamy weekends with beefcake painters. Reminiscent of junior high school, Toni and Alette do their best to keep Ashley out of their cool clique, but find it difficult when a string of murders irrevocably binds them together. Based on a true story and laden with realistic details--not to mention a whopper of an ending--Tell Me Your Dreams is vintage Sheldon. However, there is one necessary caveat: avoid moviegoer types who insist on telling you the entire plot before you have a chance to see it. You should be doing this anyway, but take extra care with this book. Once the surprise ending is blown, so is the fun in reading it. --Rebekah Warren

4 out of 5 stars A Definite Page Turner.......2007-06-05

Multiple personality disorder is the subject of this Sheldon work and it is nothing short of outstanding. The story centers around the character of serene Ashley Patterson, 28 year old graphic artist at a company called Global Computer Graphics. Toni Prescott is 22 years old with a powerful desire to stir things up and live on the edge. Alette Peters is a low-key type personality always trying to keep Toni from blowing up but in the end, giving into whatever Toni says. As the story unfolds and Ashley's memory takes on more and more black holes, the reader realizes that this is a dire situation, involving murder, that may be next to impossible to correct. Sheldon takes us deep into the minds of the three personalities and keeps us on the edge of our seats to see "what happens next," never knowing who will prevail. In the words of a familiar children's song, "pop! goes the weasel" - you'll have to read the book to understand the real meaning of this phrase.

5 out of 5 stars Sidney Sheldon is the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-01-04

Sidney Sheldon held my attention once again w/his lovely dialogue. He fashions a story that you can really sink ur teeth into!!

5 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down.......2006-10-20

This is the only book I have found that I could not put down. It keeps you in suspense, while you tilt on the edge of your seat. The ending is such a surprise!!! Get ready for a wonderful thrill!

3 out of 5 stars A Simple, Easy, Forgettable Read .......2006-08-20

This review is for the Warner Books paperback edition reissued in June 2005, 363 pages of story. TELL ME YOUR DREAMS was on the USA Today top 150 best sellers list for 26 weeks between September 1998 and October 1999, reaching a peak position of number five.

Three lovely young ladies who work for Global Computer Graphics in Silicon Valley are implicated in the brutal murder and mutilation of five more or less nice men. Although perplexing, the evidence against them seems irrefutable and by the time the case goes to trial we know who done it, but not until the story is nearly finished will we understand why.

TELL ME YOUR DREAMS has cops, detectives, lawyers and doctors, but it does not dwell on police procedure, sleuthing, legalize or medical practice. Set in California, it touches on Quebec, London and Rome but with the slimmest of description. This is a simple, easy, forgettable read.

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining and preposterous low-brow reading.......2006-06-24

I travel a lot, so I read a lot of Sheldon to pass the time in airports. This is definitely one of the more fantastically crazy thrillers, albeit based on a "real" story and medical condition. Where Ashley finds the time, even unconsciously, to hone her skills as a Broadway-level entertainer, a potential Picasso, a trilinguist AND a computer whiz is beyond me. Talk about getting laid constantly even when she doesn't want to! Some of the affairs are believable but really, a sheriff devoted to his dying wife who sees her naked and just HAS to do it to her in her sleep? Ewwww...and Sheldon sure likes his "tough black woman judges" (see Nothing Lasts Forever).

But one doesn't expect classic lit here, rather escapist fun. Although I do think some of Sheldon's other works (Master of the Game, other earlier stuff) were better crafted.

5 out of 5 stars For writers too.......2006-05-29

This book is written for parents who are looking for story-telling guidance and inspiration, but for anyone who is interested in writing books or short stories for children it is extremely valuable and useful. It far surpasses most "how to" books and articles on writing for the juvenile market.

It is a beautiful and literate book, and not only does it teach gently about writing, it almost inadvertantly offers deep wisdom about being a Good Parent. Perhaps this is even a more important aspect of this book, as it's suggestions for telling a "good" story to one's children are really suggestions on how to see, feel, and understand your children and to then connect adult wisdom and values to them in a way they can accept.

This is a truly wise and valuable book.

5 out of 5 stars You Can Do It! ..........2003-04-29

...That's the message from Chase Collins, the author of Tell Me a Story.

Children NEED to hear stories, and not just from books. They especially need their parents to spend time with them. Storytelling is a wonderful way to do this, and bedtime is one of the best times for stories.

This book will help you create stories specifically for your child. In one chapter, the author provides a model to follow for story-making. Lots of other encouragement and guidance are also provided.

Please keep in mind that the model given in this book is just ONE way...one model. Wide reading of different kinds of stories will also help you in creating your own.

Try it, and have fun!

                Book Description

Oxford historian and TV personality Daniel Kind and his new lover, Miranda, both want to escape to a new life. On impulse they buy Tarn Cottage in Brackdale, an idyllic valley in the Lake District that Daniel knew as a boy, a place so remote that the dead had to be carried out over the peaks on pack animals along the ancient Coffin Trail. Tarn Cottage was once home to Barrie Gilpin, an autistic youth suspected of a savage murder. A young woman visitor to the valley had been found laid out on the Sacrifice Stone, an ancient pagan site up on the fell. Barrie fell to his death near the crime scene before he could be questioned. All these years later, Daniel retains his belief in Barrie's innocence and questions his own policeman father's handling of the case. When DCI Hannah Scarlett and her squad launch a cold case review, Brackdale's skeletons begin to rattle. The wild geography of the Lakes District plays against local literary references, all backdrop to the lives of villagers and outsiders drawn to this beautiful spot-but for what reasons? The Coffin Trail launches a new series by a master British hand.

This book could have used a strong editor. For instance, characters begin speaking before they are introduced and the reader is left wondering who they are, what are they doing with these other characters and retracing his/her steps trying to figure out if the reader fell asleep and simply missed their introduction.

One of the main characters in the book, Daniel, goes to a pub with his wife. He leaves her sitting while he table hops stopping to speak with people as if they were long-time friends/acquaintances even though Daniel has just moved to the area. While talking with these people as if they hadn't just met, Daniel asks if they heard a gun shot the night before. The couple gives a long explanation of who it might have been and why he might have been shooting at night. Daniel then asks the same people if they heard a gun shot the night before.

It was at that point that I put the book down. There are just too many good books on the market to waste one's time with either poorly written or poorly edited books.

The author switches from the couple who have just moved to the Lakes District and the officers involved in the newly formed Cold Case Squad. The author would have been better served telling the story from the point of view of the Squad's Hannah Scarlett for it is her voice that sustains the book and keeps the reader reading well beyond 50 pages. The couple are unbelievable from the get go - giving up a tenured position at Oxford University, knowingly buying a cottage where an alleged murderer lived, spending scads of money refurbishing the cottage when both are now unemployed, all for love.

I was disappointed because this book sounded so good in the descriptions and reviews I'd seen.

                2 out of 5 stars Only okay........2005-11-15

Daniel Kind and his lover, Miranda, buy a house in the Lake Country; a house once lived in by a boy accused of murder, who was found dead of an accident. Daniel's policeman father investigated the case, but Daniel never believed the boy was guilty. Now Daniel is asking questions and causes the police to take a new look at the murder. The locals are not happy, particularly when someone else dies.

The basic story, the descriptions of the Lake District and the overall writing were enjoyable. But this was offset by lack of character development, being irritated by the relationships of the two main couples, and the coincidences. The scene exposing the killer just wasn't realistic. I found myself having trouble caring about the story or the characters. It wasn't a terrible read, but there are many better out there.

3 out of 5 stars Well written but Old Hat.......2005-03-26

Starts off with a young Oxford Historian and his girl friend getting fed up and 'retiring' to live at a place where Daniel Kind, the historian, lived and remembers a brutal murder. His father, the policeman was never convinced of the guilt of the man presumed to have committed the crime, but who died-accidentally or by suicide. He left our hero and his family and Daniel exhibits the usual angst of sons in this situation.
One of his father's old flames, Hannah Scarlett, now is in charge of 'cold crimes' and reopens the case. She has a relationship which began at the time of the murder.
Nicely written, very atmospheric, and lyrical language which enhances the Cumbrian landscape. But the characters behave in predictable ways, the domestic squabbles of Daniel and Miranda are hackneyed. The usual village gossipers want to let well alone. 'No good will come out of digging into the past,' etc.
It actually reads like Christie's Hercule Poirot tackling old mysteries. Unfortunately for the author, while Mrs. Christie's books ran to about two hundred pages, this one, at twice the length, fails to totally snare the readers' attention. But in the end, it is a solid mystery, none too distinguished but then everyone cannot be another Reginal Hill.

5 out of 5 stars fine amateur sleuth police procedural rivalry .......2004-10-13

Miranda persuades her lover Oxford historian and TV host Daniel Kind to leave the school that she insists is stifling him and she would quit her detestable job so that they can relocate and move in together. She further convinces Daniel to buy notorious Tarn Cottage in a relatively isolated Lake District Valley. Daniel is familiar with Tarn Cottage once home to Asperger's syndrome sufferer Barrie Gilpin, whom he knew.

Barrie was suspected by the police led by Daniel's father of a violent ritual murder, but before he was questioned he fell to his death. Daniel has solved mysteries on his TV show using Holmesian logic and always felt that Barrie was innocent. Additionally, Detective Chief Inspector Hannah Scarlett has reopened this cold case because of a recent anonymous tip. Although Hannah and her team do not want Daniel interfering, he also makes inquiries as he plans to prove Barrie was innocent. The two adjoining investigations upset several residents of Brackdale, who want their dirty laundry left hidden from view.

Although coincidence is over-killed to bring the son and the protégé in competition, readers will appreciate this fine amateur sleuth police procedural rivalry in which the who-done-it is cleverly devised. The story line is fun to follow as Daniel and Hannah employ similar methods as both learned from his dad. They also share in common the fear that their teacher bungled this case when he bet on Barrie exclusively. Miranda adds just the right additional touch so that the audience obtains a strong mystery that tracks THE COFFIN TRAIL, the path the dead are taken on to leave the isolated valley for burial.

                        Book Description

When British journalist Nick Wood thought about America, he thought of a country where death was becoming a national pastime, a bizarre obsession, and, in some cases, a spectator sport. He decided to go and see for himself. This is Wood's funny and tragic account of his journey along a route of carnage and destruction, from LA to New York, with the Grim Reaper as his guide and traveling companion.

2 out of 5 stars Digging up bones!!.......2005-12-10

I'm not surprised that this book, published in Great Britain in 1999,has yet to have recieved a review. The author from London made a quick tour around the US and visited a dozen or so murder sites, talked to whoever he happened to bump into ,threw together a bit of a summary, and presto--a book. There is nothing new or different than what has been said over and over again, and hardly worth the read;unless you have been holed up in a cave and never heard of Billy the Kid,Tombstone,Ariz.,JFK shooting in Dallas,JonBenet Ramsey, murder of Dr.Martin Luthur King, and several more murders we have been hearing about for years, and like I said, nothing new turned up.A comparison might be a writer from New York visiting Britain and visiting a couple of murder sites of Jack the Ripper, talk to a couple of locals he bumped into;then writing a short account of it.
Maybe this book would interest people in Britain but it has
not anything to interest people on this side of the Big Pond.
In my opinion the best of this book is written on the back over;but in no stretch of the imagination does the book deliver!
