great Superman stories..........2007-08-04
This volume along with Green Lantern vol.1 were the first two Showcase books put out by DC, and so they put them out at a promotional price of 9.99 while the others retail for 16.99.
To the previous reviewer, this Superman volume does not have any missing pages, that's just a messed up book.
I personally don't mind the lack of color in the DC Showcase or Marvel Essentials at all for one reason: the great pencillers in the old days were just as good (or better) as the best ones today, but the coloring was so poor pre-1990s or so that you really are not losing anything by the comics companies removing those awful cheap coloring jobs. Many coloring these days is done by computer and it shows, you simply cannot compare older comics' coloring with the average comics of today. Now if modern comics would just drop the 'we have to be so incredibly intense and violent all the time' everything would be in great shape. Not that I have anything against these things, it would just be nice if it wasn't every comic I read today from front to back. I love the Dark Knight Returns, but I also love wacky older Batman stories and the Batman TV show. Maybe that's why I love reading these older stories in Showcase and Essentials, because they frequently have zany lighter mood stories which are fun reading.
A shot of nostalgia.......2007-06-21
I just recently bought the three volumes of Showcase Presents: Superman. Does anyone wonder why volume 1 is only $9.99 while the other 2 volumes are $16.99? It's because the first book has about 32 pages missing. Page 35 jumps to page 67, or equivalent, in my book. That doesn't detract from the book as a whole and I'm enjoying reading the stories. But I wonder if anyone else has noticed this.
Warning- What they didn't tell you.......2007-02-25
The only thing in color in this volume is the cover. The entire book is composed of a black and white newspaper-type reproduction of the comics. If you're satisfied with that, fine. Otherwise, beware. It just isn't the same as the original comics or the fine Superman in the 40's, 50's etc. series.
Superman of '58. A Great Role-Model.......2006-09-05
What parent doesn't want their son to be honest, helpful, brave, kind, courteous, and patriotic? Clark Kent was all of these things in 1958--kind of corny, huh? Then I guess, Corny is good--especially when you talk about our kids.
But I love these stories for the cheezy (by today's standards) mysteries. How did Superman know ...? And some of the stories are classics, the first Metallo, first Supergirl, his first real proposal to (guess who)...
And I love the turmoil Clark experiences guarding his greatest secret. Clark wants to tell Lois "I'm Superman, let's get married and live happily ever after." But no; if the world knew his identity, then his friends would be in constant danger. So Clark sacrifices his own desires for the safety of his friends and the good of his country.
That's right, I said country. Superman was a proud American before his last movie--in Superman Returns, he stands for Truth, Justice, and "all that other stuff."
Lets see you keep your greatest talent a secret from all your friends.
best of the golden age .......2006-02-13
the showcase books are the same as the marvels essentialls.
This volume include action comics 241 to 257 and superman 122 to 134.
Book Description
The value-priced format of black-and-white collections continues with this volume spotlighting Supermans girlfriend Lois Lane and his pal Jimmy Olsen. Learn more about these two dynamic personalities in their solo stories as each braves danger for the latest scoop. These stories also introduce long- standing elements such as the Daily Planets Flying Newsroom and Jimmys penchant for disguises.
Customer Reviews:
Almost in color for a dime.......2007-04-27
I remember the displays at G.L. Perry's Dime Store featuring comics and more comics. Dells were swell, but DC was pretty good too! There was "Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen" #1, "Lois Lane #1," "Showcase" 105, to mention a few. And...I didn't have a dime... Now, they are all for sale on eBay and I still do not have the dime. But, thanks to the "Showcase Presents" series, the stories from Jimmy's first twenty-two issues, and some Lois Lane stuff, are bargain priced, albeit in black and white. The art of Curt Swan, Ray Burnley, and inker Stan Kaye make for almost 500 pages of grade A Olsen fun. Buy this, and other Showcase titles of your favorite characters before they go out of print. Also recommended for public libraries, but have them "covered up"--you know what I mean.
Disappointed.......2007-02-25
As a life-long Superman fan I had purchased the Superman in the 50's, 60's series which were excellent reproductions of the original comic book stories. When I ordered the Showcase Presents series, however, it broke my heart. Perhaps it was done to keep the price low, but all of the stories, though faithfully reproduced are in black and white, reading like newspaper comics. I couldn't help but feel cheated, thinking they really should have warned us. Somehow, it just isn't the same.
Jimmy Rocks!.......2006-09-19
So, it's mostly Jimmy Olsen stories? SWEET! I particualrly enjoy Jimmy Olsen tales, because he's a normal guy who winds up in weird situations... and he (was) Superman's pal. I especially like stories where he didn't have to resort to his signal watch to get Superman's help. (That's the easy way out!)
Everyone thinks I'm weird...
And let me say this: WHAT HAPPENED TO HAVING A FEW STORIES IN A SUPERHERO COMIC BOOK! It seems like now, they can't even put a whole story in one comic book! Remember when book-length stories were special issues? (Not really, I'm only 20, but my dad had zillions of old comics...)
Jimmy Olsen, Lois Lane, the Elongated Man... bring 'em all back...
Pure Insanity.......2006-04-14
To really understand this book, you have to keep in mind these stories were written at a time when the government didn't regulate what chemicals went into drinking water, pregnant women were encouraged to smoke, and doctors regularly prescribed cocaine and heroin for medicinal purposes. From that frame of reference, everything makes perfect sense. Otherwise, this book is the most ridiculous collection of stories ever printed.
The attitude you bring to the reading will determine if you find them to be sublimely stupid or... well, stupidly stupid. Personally, I laughed out loud often enough that my coworkers started checking in for regular "What beyond idiocy thing did Jimmy do now?" updates.
While the title is "Superman Family," this is a "Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen" book, with just one Lois Lane issue, rougly 20 pages out of almost 600. I'm guessing A) future volumes will focus more on "Superman's Girlfriend Lois Lane" without making DC create a different title and B) the marketing folks at DC understood no one in his right mind would buy "Showcase Presents Jimmy Olsen," and were probably correct.
DC KNUCKLEHEADS DO IT AGAIN!.......2006-03-24
GREAT! Okay, I've been waiting for the Showcase Jimmy Olsen and Lois Lane...BUT why together??? I love both series but the two together? This has got to be the worst that DC can do to these wonderful series! What happened to the Perry White book anyhow? LOL! I'm dying to see these as well as ATOM, Hawkman, Atomic Knights, Doom Patrol, Metal Men, Teen Titans, Blackhawk and hopefully Brave and Bold!

Book Description
From the bestselling author of The Abduction and Found Money comes another pulse-pounding thriller.
Gus Wheatley thinks he's found success. Money, power, prestige -- they all come with the territory for the youngest lawyer ever to grab the helm of Seattle's most prominent law firm. Nothing can interfere with his meteoric rise to the top -- until his wife vanishes.
Beth dropped off their six-year-old daughter at the youth center one afternoon, and no one has seen her since. Her disappearance comes just as FBI profilers are called in to examine a bizarre emerging pattern of brutal serial murders that rocks Seattle. The FBI dubs them "bookend killings, " as the killer seems to be striking his victims in pairs: first two men, then two women. The victims are unrelated, yet within each pairing, one mirrors the other in chilling detail.
But this is just the beginning of the nightmare for Gus. Soon Seattle police fashion a theory that leaves two horrifying possibilities: Either Beth is the killer's latest victim...or she is his willing accomplice.
As the gruesome murders continue, and with Beth's whereabouts still unknown, Gus starts to investigate. He cannot accept the idea that Beth would ever ally herself with a cold-blooded killer, but only now that she's gone does Gus realize just how far apart they've grown. Slowly, Gus begins to unravel the shocking truth about the woman he thought he knew. Beth may be alive. She may or may not be innocent. She may have come up against something far more evil than just a serial killer. And for Gus and his family, that evil is far too close to home.
An intense tale of success and betrayal, and a frightening look into the darker side of the human psyche, Under Cover of Darkness is James Grippando at his best.
Customer Reviews:
A real page turner.......2007-06-12
This was my introduction to this author's work and it sure looks like he has a lot of talent for writing compelling suspense.
Gus Wheatly's wife has disappeared. At first the FBI believe that he may have done something to her. Then they start to think she may have fallen victim to a serial killer whose pattern is known as "book-ends." As Gus begins the search for his wife he discovers that he knows absolutely nothing about her. This is due to being a workaholic, coming home very late seven days a week and going out of town on long business trips.
To make Gus's problems worse he is suddenly kicked out of his law firm by his business partner who has virtually ruined his reputation in the firm and Gus is forced to take care of his six-year old daughter, who treats him like a stranger and like someone who may have had something to do with her mother's disappearance.
Trying to help Gus is an FBI agent named Andie. Andie is not sure whether Gus's wife was simply abducted or may be actually involved in the serial killings that are taking place.
The book moves along at a very rapid pace and Andie and Gus are very likeable characters. We really feel Gus's frustration as he tries to peel back the wall that stands between him and his young daughter.
The book also has a lot of tension. Lurking about is a mysterious black suited individual that loves to hang himself until almost dying and then freeing himself just before it is too late. He seems to love to do the same to his victims before they are ultimately killed.
My only problem with the book is that both Gus and Andie seem to do things towards the end of the book that had me shaking my head as to why. Otherwise this book would have earned a full five stars.
Terrible.......2007-03-28
This book was terrible. Let's start with the lead character Andie. If she wasn't whining about being mixed (Native American/White) she was being weak, silly and chasing after her boss, mind you she was getting married in the beginning of the book. The romance had no place in this book, it just took up extra space. You know a book is bad when the best character is the 6 year old. And the ending was ridiculous, I was angry I wasted by money.
grippando grips.......2007-02-14
Mr Grippando holds my attention and makes me wonder whats gonna happen next
Didn't want to put it down.......2006-11-15
I just finished reading "Under the Cover of Darkness". It was my introduction to a James Grippando novel. He has written a complicated yet easily understood novel about a busy attorney, Gus Whitley, who values his career over his family until his wife, Beth, disappears. He is left to take care of his six year old daughter and to make sense out of what could have happened to Beth. A serial killer is on the loose and we wait with baited breath to see if each murder will explain what happened to his wife. Grippando's prose style is crisp allowing the reader pick up the book and read as little or as much as time permits but always wanting to get back into the story. He uses interesting plot twists and turns to keep the pace moving. This book lends itself well to a reader with a busy schedule.
Great Beginning but that ending .............2006-09-14
This book centers around, (yet another), serial killer on the loose in Washington state, the up and coming aggressive FBI agent assigned to the case and a high powered attorney whose wife goes missing during the killer's "spree". The first half of this book is excellent - suspense, humor (the book's introduction of the FBI agent is priceless), and empathy with the attorney as he comes to grip with his wife's disappearance,(suspicion, the press, police, ugly politics at his law firm), and dealing with his six year old daughter. I thought to myself this author has hit his stride. Unfortunately about mid-way events slow,... okay.... but then the conclusion .... Unsatisfying is an understatement and all the more disappointing after this book's start. This isn't a bad book - it just isn't the first one I'd pick up off the stack of "Books to read". The frustration to this reader was the excellent beginning paired with the less than so-so ending.

ONE outstanding reason to try a new collection;.......2007-04-30
Tanya Huff has a Terizon short in this book!!!
I love Terizon, Tanya Huff's Arabian-esque thief. This short does not disappoint! Terizon is once again blackmailed by her morals, and the Thieves' Council Three, into a job that no thief should be forced to undertake. Chasing an anti-government conspiracy into the city graveyard, will ghosts spook our brave thief?
Terizon, as all Tanya Huff characters/stories, is smart, funny and completely readable.
Go out of your way to find these hidden Tanya Huff jewels~ They are worth it!
enjoyable suspense thriller anthology .......2007-02-07
The premise of this enjoyable anthology is that covert groups working behind the scenes influence and even cause major events to happen. The fourteen tales run the gamut from suspense thriller to science fiction and even fantasy as the contributors develop secret societies that also range from total controlling to stand-by chronicler/watcher. The entries are interesting though the short story format does not allow for major background development especially of the clandestine societies (this reviewer would not mind several expanded into novellas). Still these are exciting tales whether they have the Freemasons pulling strings, the Scoria changing their existence, the Dancer in Toronto or elves warring in London. Suspense readers especially conspiracy fans especially will appreciate this fine compilation of new stories of covert factions working behind the scenes.

As landscape architect Meg St. John struggles with difficulties on a career-making project, she is befriended by Jack Torres. Unbeknownst to Meg, Jack is a border patrol agent working undercover to break up a smuggling gang within Meg's company -- a situation that soon puts them both in grave danger.
Customer Reviews:
The best LI Suspense title I've read so far..........2006-06-13
I've read several LI Suspense novels, but this is the first I've posted a review on because I think it's worth recommending. The others I never finished. I hate it when I get bored with a story, but it happens. Fortunately, this one doesn't put you to sleep. In fact, I enjoyed it very much. The La Migra and all of the Spanish sayings and Mexican culture are familiar to me as an Arizona resident. I think the author did a bang-up job making me feel part of the setting enough where I could escape in my mind to the world she wrote about. The thugs were creepy and dangerous enough to keep me wondering how bad those bad guys really were. The coolest thing is I didn't figure it out right away. She had me surprised with the conclusion, and I like that. I also loved how she showed the conflict people have who live in border states in regards to helping illegals versus reporting them. The compassion in most Americans wants to help, yet their presence here is illegal and trafficking of illegals is a dangerous business. An entire truckload of illegals were literally strewn all over the highway after a chase a few years back. They were stacked on top of each other in the back of a pickup. Very sad. I highly recommend this story as it's relevant to today's issues and well-written. The only thing I didn't care for was the lack of physical contact between the hero and heroine. It was more suspense than actual romance, IMHO.
Fast paced & entertaining.......2006-02-12
Meg St John is a landscape designer in Fort Worth, Texas. Although she has a masters degree in landscape architecture, her employer felt she was too inexperienced to bring into a management position until she spends at least one year in the field directly supervising projects. Meg doesn't mind too much. She has learned the business from the ground up and is well liked and respected by her crew, primarily made up of Hispanic laborers from Mexico.
Near the end of her year in the field, Meg is given an assignment that has a humanly impossible deadline. Restoring a historic turn of the century estate to its former grandeur in time for the wedding of a board member's daughter. Sam, her supervisor, brings in Jack Torres to "kill two birds with one stone." Jack is there to assist her with her summer project and at the same time to be trained to take Meg's place when she is promoted to management.
What Meg doesn't know is that Jack is an undercover border patrol agent, investigating a smuggling ring with suspected connections to her employer. Jack's partner Rico was killed a year earlier when they were patrolling the border. Jack suspects that the same people running the smuggling ring he is currently investigating were involved.
Meg and Jack are drawn to each other, despite their very different backgrounds. Meg is close to her family and has been a believer for many years. She is optimistic, spunky, and has a heart to care for those she loves. Jack doesn't even know who his father is or where his mother is. Because of Jack's job he has learned to be a loner and share very little of himself with others. Rico, his partner, had shared Christ with him but died shortly after Jack accepted Christ, so he has had little chance to grow in his new faith. Meg's persistence finally gets Jack to attend her Spanish/English church, where he begins to find answers to his questions and learn that God truly has a plan for him.
But the more Jack comes to care for Meg, the more he believes that he is not the man for her. Life as the wife of an undercover border patrol agent would take her away from her family, job and everyone that she loves. It would also put her in danger, and he would do anything to keep her safe.
This was a quick read and a very enjoyable story. I'm hoping that there will be a book somewhere down the line with Meg's roommate, Bernadette (Benny), as the main character. The bits of her background revealed in this book are crying out for a story of their own.
A sweet tale of finding hope and redemption in unlikely places.......2006-02-11
Courtesy of Love Romances
Jack Torres' partner on Border Patrol has recently been killed. This tragedy causes Jack to lose all faith and has turned him into a man whose only goal is vengeance. Now Jack's mission has brought him to Ft. Worth, Texas, to go deep undercover and try to find the men running trade in illegal immigration across the border from Mexico. He never expects that his mission will lead him to the one person who can help him find his trust in God once more.
Meg St. John is a landscape designer who doesn't like the INS because they are always causing problems for her crew. She is too kind and innocent to realize what is happening right under her nose. Meeting Jack has put her in danger and affected her more than she'd like. Someone knows Jack's secret and will stop at nothing to prevent him from fulfilling his mission. Will his new found faith in his Savior be enough to save him and Meg? What of the slowly blossoming relationship between Jack and Meg? Will she still care for him when she knows the truth about his identity?
Under Cover of Darkness by Elizabeth White is a sweet tale of finding hope and redemption in unlikely places. Meg's faith in God is an inherent part of her being and shows itself in every single aspect of her life. It makes her the strong, happy woman she is and provides her with everything she needs. Jack's arrival in her life shakes things up a bit for her, but she helps him to discover what is most important in life. Without this aspect of the story, it would have been very different, and probably not as heart warming.
The idea of basing a story on the unfortunate practice of running what amounts to nothing more than slave labor through illegal immigration is an intriguing one. This subject matter provides the suspense that runs through the story. Readers are kept guessing as to who exactly the enemies are, and how much they know about Jack's mission. This reviewer thought she had the villain pegged, only to find out in the end she couldn't have been more wrong. The necessity of Jack keeping his cover provides plenty of tension between him and Meg, as she tries to come to terms with who she thinks he is. Jack is torn over his attraction to Meg. He knows what happened to his late partner's family and does not want to put someone else through that agony.
Under Cover of Darkness is sure to appeal to readers who love a sweet story of love and have their own strong faith in God. One will come to understand, if they don't already realize, that all anyone has to do is trust in God and He will bring them through the strongest of tribulations. Faith is all that is required for people to find what they need most.
