Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Twin Peaks of High School romance comics.......2006-05-06

"School Rumble" starts like a standard High School romance comic. Tenma loves Karasuma. Harima loves Tenma. Eri loves Harima. Hijinks ensue. But...then it gets weird.

Karasuma is anything but a normal human being. Almost completely expressionless, he dresses like a Kappa (a mythical Japanese water imp) and seems to posses supernatural powers. Harima is a master fighter, but has a hidden secret that he protects violently. Nothing is what it seems.

Like most Japanese comics, "School Rumble" takes a while to get into the main story. This first issue is quite a bit of set up, and doesn't have all the elements that the series will grow into. The author, Kobayashi Jin, had the basic plot for the series but hadn't quite hit the tone yet. This early volume is still very, very funny, and had me laughing out loud while reading it.

4 out of 5 stars not a must-read, but..........2006-04-07

I just finished reading this one. I've read a lot of the scanlations before, though, and had thought that the series is good enough that I ought to at least buy the first volume of it, so that the author does get some well-deserved cash, sort-of... But after reading the del Rey translation, I feel all fired-up and enthusiastic about School Rumble again, and I certainly do intend to order the next one as soon as it's available. School Rumble has it's own unique sort of "zany"-ness, and it's just plain fun! Of course the plot is not unique, but the way the story is told, and takes a number of unexpected turns, well... Any one who's truly interested in manga will be denying themselves a good thing if they don't at least take a good look-thru of School Rumble...

4 out of 5 stars God, this reminds me of MY high school days........2006-04-01

I never heard of School Rumble until I passed by a discount comic section at a book store that was going out of business. Reading the name of it, I assumed it was similar to Rival Schools. Then I read the back of the book, and it sounded like anything but that. They claim that School Rumble is a story about how high school really is: over-the-top comedy. While the kids at Columbine may have otherwise to say about that, the book sounded interesting, dealing with a love triangle between two complete opposites, and I picked it up along with a few other books. Upon reading the first two stories in the book, I was confused. This is one messed-up book. I'm almost willing to say that it's more confusing than FLCL, but nothing's more confusing than reading those things. School Rumble, while random 80% of the time, actually has a plot, and does a good job of not relying on random acts of comedy for laughs like other books do. The characters, while some are total dimwits, are too great to not fall in love with. School Rumble isn't perfect though. This is Jin Kobayashi's (any relation to the great What's Michael? creator Makoto Kobayashi?) first book, and it shows. School Rumble suffers from over-explaining either from Kobayashi's part, or Del Rey's part. I haven't read other Del Rey books, so I can't tell who it is, but this wouldn't be the best series to jump into for the first-time Japanese comic reader.

School Rumble tells the comedic story of two high school students. The first being Tenma Tsukamoto, a second-year student who is absolutely in love with a boy, Karasuma Ouji, who's about to transfer to a different school already (it's the beginning of the school year). She tries to get the courage to tell him how she feels, but can't. Tenma writes a freakin' SCROLL confessing her love for him, and finally gets the guts to deliver it to him...but forgets to sign it, or mention who she is. All that work for nothin'...or was it? Karasuma gets permission from his parents to stay at that school for one more year. But, there's someone who has the hots for Tenma- Kenji Harima. This guy is a total bad-ass. He rides a motorcycle, sports black clothing, always wears sunglasses, and doesn't care about school one bit. And yet he's a sucker for Tenma, doing anything in his power to get her to pay attention to him. Sadly, she's too fixed on Karasuma to notice him. The weird thing is, Karasuma is a pretty boring guy. In the entire book, he never really does anything. He's average, doesn't seem to have any interests, and doesn't talk much aside from "thanks" or when he's greeting people. Kenji's the much better choice if you ask me. Or anyone for that matter probably. The book covers Tenma coming up with new ways to get Karasuma to notice her, and Kenji doing the same for Tenma, both of which get their plans backfired more often than not. Add in some supporting characters that both help the situation, and make it worse, and you've got chaos everywhere.

While Tenma is a cute character, she gets annoying fairly often. She's just so stupid when it comes to anything not related to Karasuma, that we often tell ourselves, "ok, we get it- she's in love. How about something new?". She never once, in the entire book, has anything interesting or non-Karasuma-related to talk about. Heck, one story has her going through the woods where a known rapist lurks, and risks going there for Karasuma. Is there anyone this stupid? Even Mihoshi from the Tenchi series had some common sense. What's funny is that her younger sister, Yakumo, is more mature than Tenma will probably ever be. She gets good grades, is in sports, takes care of a homeless cat, and is more or less the mother figure in Tenma's life. Speaking of parents, the Tsukamoto sisters don't seem to have any, or mention them. Not that it's required to know everything about a family in the first book, but you really wonder how they pull through, both still being in high school and neither having a job. Tenma's annoyance, luckily, is countered by Kenji's awesomeness. It took me a few chapters to really like this guy, but he's one of the cooler "bad boys" I've seen in recent years. Just the image of a tough-guy doing things like shooting arrows with love notes attached to them, mouthing words to a girl in order to let her know that she forgot to put her name on her test, dressing up as a police man to fight a rapist, and more is hilarious. And it's not like he's only doing this when no one is watching- Kenji is constantly like this. Sure, he's pretty much a guy version of Tenma, but he at least describes his thoughts more clearly, and is a riot when doing so. One other minor problem I had was that this volume introduces too many characters. Every other chapter or so, there'll be a quick profile on a character, and I found myself flipping back to them to see if they were introduced or not already. 2/3 of Tenma's friends look the same aside from the hair, and aside from Kenji, all of the guys look identical. I couldn't even tell Karasuma was himself until Tenma exclaimed so. That's how basic he looks, and is.

The art direction isn't anything special. The characters all look average, and the fact that this takes place at school most of the time doesn't help character designs. The most diversity you'll get in School Rumble is when Kenji's laying the smack down on someone in his way, and the illustration takes up both pages. Fortunately, the translation is excellent for the most part. Honorifics are used, which pleases most fans, though I couldn't care either way. Actually, when I first read "nee-san", I did a double take, wondering if it was a typo. Everything being translated except those? Weird. I almost forgot that "nee-san" was a title. There's a little index of terms that weren't translated in the beginning of the book, letting you know that honorifics were kept. And even better, the last few pages of the book are dedicated to explaining some things that were changed during translation, or things that would confuse most western readers. One that comes to mind immediately is how the kanji for arrow and the kanji for loss differ ever so slightly, and explain how someone confuses the two for each other since they're half-British, half-Japanese (assuming they came from the UK recently). Another is how "kappa" means both rain gear, and the well-known water sprite (Final Fantasy VI fans will know this immediately). Pretty much, if anything in this book confuses you (aside from how stupid Tenma is), the glossary will explain it for you. I wish more books did this.

Not to sound sexist, but Rumble School is aimed more for female readers, dealing with high school romance. But anyone who goes into anything without a set mind should be able to get something out of this. While the little notes in panels explaining what's going on will annoy some people, like me, you'll get used to them eventually. I'm sure things will pick up in the next few books, as Kobayashi gets more used to what's going on, and matures as an author and artist. I'll definitely check out the next chapter. Kenji demands so.

5 out of 5 stars Vol. 1 -- School & Romance Comedy.......2006-03-12

On the surface, "School Rumble" may seem like just another manga title dealing with high school life, or in this case, high school crushes. However, for me, manga-ka Jin Kobayashi-sensei has taken a different approach which results in some really good humor.

The manga has two main characters because it has two related stories it follows. The first deals with Tsukamoto Tenma (name displayed Japanese style with the family-name first). She's a 2nd-year high school student who's in love with fellow 2nd-year student Karasuma Ouji (name displayed Japanese style). So her story deals with her attempts to confess her love to Karasuma-kun and her attempts to get closer to him. Of course, things are never that simple, as I'm sure most of us rescall from our own high school days. ^_^;

The second story deals with Harima Kenji (name Japanese style), who's a serious punk and delinquent. However, this tough, mean-looking guy has a weakness -- he's fallen in love with fellow 2nd-year student Tsukamoto Tenma-chan. He too has great difficulty in expressing his feelings for Tenma-chan, but is a lot like her includinge doing different things to attempt to get closer to her.

There are a couple of special chapters at the end of volume 1 where Tenma's younger sister Yakumo is the star. Those are a fun side-track to the main story.

So, what sets this apart? For me, having the story follow Tenma and Kenji starts it. With Kenji in love with Tenma and she in love with Ouji-kun, we have an odd, but realistic unrequited love-triangle. Tenma is unaware that Kenji loves her and Ouji is unaware that Tenma loves him. Plus, it is just funny watching a Japanese hood having this really good heart inside as he tries to find a way to get Tenma-chan's attention and thus her heart.

Further, what made this more than just humorous were the unexpected things that would happen during the course of a chapter. I was reading this in the waiting room of a Doctor's office and at times had to really contain myself from just laughing my self silly. Kobayashi-sensei has Tenma-chan and Kenji-kun go to the extreme at times, but because those extremes weren't expected, it made it funnier for me.

I have to give some props to translator & English adaptor William Flanagan. There were a lot of Japanese puns in this, and I know that's difficult to deal with. However, he makes good use of Del Rey's "Translator Notes" section at the end of the manga to explain those cultural puns and how he worked the translations. So I appreaciate that a lot. Plus there are a lot of notes in this volume (a great thing) and some of William's notes are written from a 1st-person perspective which is a nice touch.

Being a Del Rey title, full use of honorifics are used in the title, which for this fan is always a great thing.

Bottom line: Very funny, nicely drawn, and just a lot of fun to read. I'm not sure why it was rated age 16+ because there is almost no fanservice and not much violence, but don't let that rating stop you from purchasing this.

4 out of 5 stars Welcome to High School... where Love is a Battle!.......2006-03-11

It is here, in the tradition of countless romantic comedies before them, that Tsukamoto Tenma and Harima Kenji wage a series of flamboyant and way over the top Special Operations to secure the affections of their secret crushes. Unfortunately, and typically, their crushes have no idea they are loved from not-so-far away (say, a just a seat over).

Tenma, is head over heels for the quiet cool of Karasuma-san, while Kenji moons over Tenma who is, of course, oblivious. All this leads to massive hijinks, mislaid/unsigned love letters, bullet-time arrow slinging, a rousing game of Old Maid, and a delinquent standing on a plank wearing peacock feathers.

Confused? Just go with it, my friends...

Also included are a few stories concerning Tenma's younger sister Yakumo, her various suitors (plus one Thunder Child), and a black cat.

The cheese is so thick, you'd think you were in Wisconsin... but don't let that bother you. School Rumble is a fun little comedic romance with crisp art and pacing. Sure it's a little stale situation/plot-wise, but it's still an enjoyable read.

My son likes this book quite a bit. It's pretty informative and the illustrations are good. He knew most of the information already but the illustrations and the couple of new bits of information held his interest.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-09-06

This book gives a great description that EVERYONE can understand about rain, thunder and lightning. We have tried in so many different ways to teach our daughter about this phenomena and when we read the book she realized that we were telling the truth!

5 out of 5 stars One of our boys' top picks over years.......2000-07-22

My two boys, now aged 3 and almost 5, have asked for this constantly over a period of two years. They put it in the top five the top of their favorite books list and we have a LOT of outstanding books. My older boy has wowed several adults with his lectures on how lightening and thunder work. I highly recommend the book/cassette combination. My husband and I also enjoy listening to it after many, many hearings. It is entertaining, soothing, interesting, and educational.

This is such a cute book. Bright and colorful pictures to look at, with a story that isn't too repetitive. Readers will not mind reading time and again to children

5 out of 5 stars Rumble in the Jungle! Rocks!!.......2007-02-21

This book is beautifully illustrated. The vibrant colors invited my students to be actively engaged while we were reading it together. The rhyme scheme of the book made my students laugh and learn at the same time. Humor is always a good way to learn. I would reccomend this book to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Fun for parents and kids.......2007-01-29

This book has been a favorite in our home since we got it over 8 years ago. The pictures are beautiful and fun. The rhymes are great. It is one of the few books that I do not tire of reading over and over and over again to the kiddos.

Only draw-back is that it is permanately stuck in my head. Can't go to the zoo without finding myself saying the rhymes. Oh, who am I kidding, that's not a draw-back...it is kinda fun! hee hee

5 out of 5 stars A must for any home.......2007-01-09

This book has been loved by all of my children, every one of my children old enough to talk have this book memorized.

5 out of 5 stars My 3 1/2 month old's 1st favorite!.......2006-04-27

If you can believe it, my 3 1/2 month old absolutely LOVES this book. I figured she would like the bright illustrations, and boy was I right! Each time I turn the page, I am rewarded with a squeal of delight and her pumping her little legs with excitement. Reading it once is usually not enough for her. She begins to fuss when I close the book and put it down. As soon as I open it again, she's quiet and still. Turn the first page and, yep, you guessed it. I am thrilled she has her first favorite book-and one I love to read to her over and over. I am glad that it is not a five word book, like some books for children. The rhyming is great, too.

In all his years of detecting, the unflappable Nero Wolfe has never encountered an investigation as damnably messy as this one. For what began as a clean case of larceny quickly sank into a quagmire of blackmail and broken promises, international scandal and cold-blooded murder.

Now Wolfe and his assistant, Archie Goodwin must bridge eras and oceans to find the link between a Wild West lynching and a respected British peer. Only then can they save Wolfe's beautiful young client -- and a hotly disputed stake of a cool million dollars.

          5 out of 5 stars Great stuff.......2006-06-12

Not having read the later stuff, I came to The Rubber Band only having read the first two books and seen the television series. I loved every minute. As pointed out, Stout is as funny as they come and the standard 30's detective story is typified by Archie's dialogue and the plot line. I'll take it as a given that the later books are better but this was still one of the best of the genre. Read this just for the fun of it.

3 out of 5 stars Take the Pledge of the Rubber Band.......2004-10-08

Rubber Coleman got his nickname by always seeming to bounce back after being knocked down in a fight. [Why did this remind me of Bill Clinton??]

Rex Stout bounced back from The League of Frightened Gentlemen with this one - the first of a few of his which jumped off Manhattan Island and recounted a tall tale of the old West. The League scared some of his early readers, I think: it was too ethereal and high-concept.

The Rubber Band shoots from the hip, by sharp contrast. Since Rex had traveled the whole United States by this time, and had spent considerable time in the West, his background should at least lend credence to the accuracy of this story.

However, like some of the reviews below assert, its actual credibility is really thin. I won't say more, since the book is enjoyable despite its flaws, but don't expect Fer de Lance, and...

          ...you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Nero Wolfe is always a good read.......2004-09-10

This is one of his first. I've read them all, several times each. Even tho this is not his best, Rex Stout still writes far better than most writers today. His books are very funny and the plots entertaining. Closest I've come to finding his successor is Deadly Diamonds, by Pamela Troutman.

          3 out of 5 stars Unlikely Wolfe.......1999-08-03

The third Wolfe, in similar melodramatic vein to The Red Box. Adventure story riddled with improbable coincidences. Check out Some Buried Caesar to see how much better the characters were just a couple of years later.

          4 out of 5 stars No. 2.......1998-12-24

An early Wolfe, very strong plot and fun read. If not quite up to the next 10 or so efforts it is smoother than Fer-de-Lance and Stout begins to humanize Wolfe's character. I think Inspector Cramer makes his first appearance, too.

5 out of 5 stars Original and dynamite .......2005-02-06

I now own a lot of resistance training books of various sorts - using dumb-bells, or the thera-band. This book is unique, the only one I found using large rubber bands (I didn't even know such things existed). I had hesitated to buy this book because of the reviewers who said the rubber bands were harsh in thier hands. When I got the book and tried the exercises I found there was absolutely no discomfort from using the bands without gloves, that was a relief. In addition, I LOVE the exercises, they somehow get at muscles in a different way than other methods. The exercises are well explained and the photographs make it easy to see exactly how to do each one. This book is among my favorites. I did not want to use the order form for new bands at the back of the book because I was afraid prices might have gone up or something since the book was published, so I did a web search on SPRI Rubber Band and found a site called LeighCrews.com, or DynaLife (it's connected somehow) where you can buy rubber bands of different widths for more or less resistance. (Hint: if you buy 20 instead of 1, the price per unit goes down drastically.) Overall, this is a great book and a great method for getting in shape and staying in shape.

5 out of 5 stars the best exercise book I've seen.......2004-01-29

Simple, easy to follow, this book outlines some great at-home workouts. I was especially impressed with the "chair" exercises, important for me at this moment since I have a broken foot.

I not only would recommend it to all, I will buy many copies and give them as gifts to friends I know need exercise that is easy and fun to do.

3 out of 5 stars Nice package; Nice workout; But Rough Bands.......2002-06-05

I got this book to extend my rubber resistance training. It's the only book on the topic I found at Amazon at the time. I was interested in the book but when it came and I saw the 2 small blue rubber bands attached, I was happy that it was an inclusive package. You didn't have to go out to buy the exercise equipment now that you had the book. I tried out much of the exercises and they do feel good. However, the rubber band feels harsh in my hand after a while and I have to do the exercises with my exercise gloves so I don't burn or chafe...

5 out of 5 stars sensible, useful book for beginners.......2000-02-10

Great book. The illustrations are clear and easy to see, and they make sense for a beginner. It stresses the importance of stretching, warmup, and aerobics, but its focus is on strength. I recommend thin gloves for using the rubber bands.

          Book Description

Maximize your strength, speed, and power through the use of resistance bands and tubing. As a complete workout on their own or a supplement to free weights and machines, strength bands are the ultimate tool for customizing workouts and isolating muscles. And the portable bands and tubing make the perfect travel workout.

Strength Band Training shows how to use resistive bands and tubing in 106 exercises addressing every major muscle group. These exercises have been used by strength professionals and many top athletes because the bands and tubing allow you to add resistance in multiple directions—something free weights and machines can't do. As a result, your resistance routine can simulate sport demands, strengthening core and supporting muscles or targeting specific rehabilitation needs.

Easy to adjust, bands and tubing are designed to provide resistance for users at any level of strength and ability. Add Strength Band Training to your conditioning program for the most complete and versatile workouts possible.

4 out of 5 stars Alternate Exercise Program.......2005-08-16

This book is well laid-out, informative to the nth degree. it has aided my health regime and alternative exercise program greatly. I would recommend it to both beginners and weight trainers of long standing.

2 out of 5 stars good idea, poor execution.......2005-05-02

I bought this book hoping it would serve as a one-stop resource for dozens of strength band exercise ideas. That is, afterall, what this book attempts to be. However, I quickly found that this book falls far short of that mark.

          On the positive side:
          1) lots of exercises
          2) generally well-organized by body part

          On the negative side:

          1) Their picture of "proper" athletic posture is seriously flawed. The guy's head is jutted forward, his abdominals aren't contracted, and his shoulders are rounded, among other things.

          2) Photos are limited to 2 shots per exercise - the 2nd shot usually shows a variation of the first. While I was glad they showed the variations, this book would have been far clearer and more useful if they'd included at least enough pictures to show each exercise's 'start' and 'finish' positions.

          3) I have to agree with the reviewer from Portland Oregon - the models in the exercise photos look bored to tears most of the time. I'm not advocating cheesy grins, but since these types of exercises are usually more effective if one (the exerciser) focuses on the specific muscles you're using, it'd be nice if this book showed models who at least look like they're actually doing the exercises - not just assuming a certain position and sleeping with eyes open until told to do something else.

          4) As another reviewer mentioned, very few (if any) of the exercise pics show how one might attach the strength band to doors, table legs, or other attachment points the typical "at home" exerciser is likely to have available. In most cases, it matters significantly how high you attach your band, the angle of resistance you create, etc.

In summary, I will be returning this book. If the negatives I listed above are important to you, a far better book selection for you to consider would be "Therapeutic Exercises Using Resistive Bands" by Caroline Corning Creager. Although that book's title specifies "therapeutic" exercises, what you'll find inside is actually much broader in scope. It includes 275 exercises (pictures depict 'start' & 'end' positions :) ) plus a whole lot more.

5 out of 5 stars A great resource for the clinic library.......2005-04-03

This book is a great adjunct to any clinical library. It has creative and thoughtful activities for theraband activity that may benefit your patient population. The pictures are easily understandable and easy to reproduce. The authors did a great job putting this book out to fill a void in resistance band training and rehabilitation.

5 out of 5 stars More than one hundred physical exercises .......2005-02-04

Strength Band Training is co-authored by sports and orthopedic physical therapist Phillip Page (Manager of Clinical education and research for Thera-Band Products) and licensed physical therapist Todd Ellenbecker (Clinic Director at the Physiotherapy Associates Scottsdale Sport Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona, and who draws upon his 18 years of professional experience as a sports clinical specialist and an orthopedic clinical specialist) and offer health and enthusiasts more than one hundred physical exercises employing resistive bands and tubing. Resistance bands and tubing allows fitness training in minimal time, at very little cost, and can be practiced in virtually any setting, on the road or at home. Individual chapters cover "Strength Training with Elastic Resistance"; "Shoulders and Arms"; "Chest and Upper Back"; Abs and Lower Back"; Hips and Thighs"; Lower Legs and Ankles"; "Combination and Circuit Training"; Power, Agility, and Speed Exercises" "Stretching Exercises"; Functional Training Programs"; and "Training on the Road". Enhanced with a bibliography for further reading, Strength Band Training is highly recommended reading, especially for fitness enthusiasts, professional athletes, fitness trainers and professionals, physical therapists, and non-specialist general readers seeking an inexpensive, versatile, and mobile training regime for their own personal health and physical well-being.

5 out of 5 stars Great Practical Tips.......2005-01-28

Elastic Resistance therapy has long been a tool for a therapist in rehabilitation without a solid knowledge base to support its use. Page and Ellenbecker have done an outstanding job at providing not only a synthesis of research in this area but they have also provided great practical tips. It is a great balance between research synthesis and practical application. I highly recommend this resource if you utilize elastic resistance in your therapy.

          Book Description

Out of all of Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe mysteries, Rubber Band stands out as one of the most intricate. The normally unflappable detective is brought on to investigate what appears to be a clean case of larceny, but soon it turns into a quagmire of blackmail and broken promises. Crossing eras and oceans, Wolfe and his trusty assistant Archie Goodwin must find the link between a lynching and a respected British peer. At stake is the life of Wolfe's beautiful young client and a million dollars.

3 out of 5 stars Framing the question.......2005-08-20

The book dates from 1936 and Archie Goodwin's speech remains perky, snappy to the modern reader. A sum of money is missing. An officer of the corporation was holding the money for what seems to be the purpose of bribery. It is removed from his desk. The head of the concern calls upon Nero Wolfe and Archie, seeking a solution to the mystery. The loss occurred between three and five thirty on a specific day. Five people could have entered Mr. Muir's office, Mr. Perry, the man who brought the case to Nero Wolfe, Clara Fox, a cable secretary, an office boy, another vice-president, Muir's stenographer. Clara Fox, the cable clerk, is the likely suspect. She had worked for the firm for three years.

The Rubber Band refers to a group of people formed years ago in Silver City, Nevada. Both collections of people, the Rubber Band and the Seaboard Co., have Clara Fox among them. Nero Wolfe determines that he will represent Clara Fox.

Since the situation is dangerous, Clara Fox is persuaded to stay at the Wolfe place. She is compelled to wear Archie's silk pajamas to bed. It seemed that she was being set up to take a fall in the case and Wolfe wanted to know why. When she is about to be arrested for larceny, Wolfe tells the Seaboard Co. that if the matter is not quashed he will go after them for false arrest.

In the Rubber Band affair a debt is the cause of pursuing Lord Clivers. Amusingly Wolfe says to him that debt is the envious past clutching the throat of the present. In classic fashion Nero Wolfe unwinds the complicated mystery in the presence of the police, the culprit, and interested parties. Great!

It can be read to children over and over again and readers will find themselves looking at everyday things in the kitchen differently and explore new ways of giving directions. Fascinating book!

My (now adult) children still have fond memories of this book, and I'm so excited to be able to buy even a used one. I've read it at least a thousand times to my children, grandchildren and foster children through the years. Now that they're adults they still remember the book and want their own copies.

Mike Thaler did NOT illustrate this book. Since his illustrations are so good, Mike Thaler books are rarely very good unless he drew it. It's still a pretty decent book, though. So I gave it three stars. But if you want a REALLY good book by Mike Thaler, buy 'Never Tickle a Turtle', 'Soup With Quackers' or 'Funny Bones'.

5 out of 5 stars How Far Will a Rubber Band Stretch?.......2000-04-18

This book presents the imagination of a child in a insightful manner. It allows one to stretch the imagination as to what one small object can do. I had the book as a child 20 years ago and remember reading it over and over again because it allowed me to think of new possibilities for common things rather than being confined to the stuctured world that we most often think of. I would definitely recommend this book for children and those willing who have the imagination of a child.

4 out of 5 stars Omnibus edition of 5 unrelated cases.......2003-02-03

This omnibus edition of THE RUBBER BAND, IN THE BEST OF FAMILIES, and THREE DOORS TO DEATH is titled FIVE OF A KIND because THREE DOORS TO DEATH is itself a collection of 3 short stories: "Man Alive" (1947), "Omit Flowers" (1948), and "Door to Death" (1949).

The selection of titles is an odd assortment. For more detailed discussion of the individual works herein, see reviews of the 3 separate books; no changes were made to include them here. They have few points in common, not even being 3 back-to-back books in publication order. While they're no worse here than taken separately, this omnibus edition provides no added value.

THE RUBBER BAND (1936) was the third Wolfe book. "The rubber band" was a group of wild youngsters 50 years prior to the opening of the story, back in Silver City, when they saved a young English expatriate from hanging. He promised them a percentage of his family fortune whenever he came into it. Now some of the survivors - including grown children - of the band have tracked down George Rowley: the Marquis of Clivers, on a diplomatic mission to the U.S. But they don't have the document proving the debt, and one of the surviving old men who know Clivers by sight is soon gunned down in the street. In common with other early Wolfe stories, THE RUBBER BAND is much livelier than some later Wolfe stories, although Wolfe himself doesn't stir out of the house for this case. There *is* a loose connection with playing cards, however: the dart game Wolfe has taken up for "exercise" recently involves trying to hit poker hands rather than bull's-eyes.

IN THE BEST OF FAMILIES (1950) was the 17th Wolfe book, and the third and final confrontation with Wolfe's nemesis, Arnold Zeck. The story would more logically be grouped with the other two Zeck stories, and in fact, this was done years after the publication of FIVE OF A KIND with the omnibus TRIPLE ZECK. IN THE BEST OF FAMILIES is noteworthy because Wolfe fled the brownstone as a matter of survival, cutting off communication even with Archie to take his own mysterious course of action in a final showdown with Zeck. Marko Vukcic, Wolfe's best friend, is the only person in Wolfe's confidence - a sore point with Archie. While Wolfe acted mainly for personal reasons in the case, he did earn a fee.

THREE DOORS TO DEATH was the 16th Wolfe book, immediately preceding IN THE BEST OF FAMILIES, but the 3 stories within it don't fit so neatly into that time slot. Two of the three cases are unusual in that Wolfe acted for personal reasons rather than for a fee.

"Man Alive" (1947) predates AND BE A VILLAIN, the first Zeck story. Cynthia Nieder, Wolfe's young client, is a model whose ambition is to apply her creative talent as a fashion designer to her half of Daumery & Nieder, which she inherited upon her uncle's spectacular suicide (he jumped naked into a geyser). The other partner, Daumery, has also recently died, in a more prosaic boating accident. Her question, however, isn't *how* either of them died, but *whether* her uncle died - she believes she saw him attend one of the firm's shows recently.

"Omit Flowers" is a case taken on as a favor to Marko; his former mentor has been accused of murder. (Marko doesn't respect him professionally anymore, however; Pompa now works for a fast-food chain.)

"Door to Death" bears no relation to "A Window for Death" from THREE FOR THE CHAIR. Wolfe's personal motive in this case is to defend Andy Krasicki, a first-class orchid man, and that purely because Wolfe needs a stand-in for Theodore, who's away indefinitely for a family emergency. Andy's fiancee was found dead among the orchids after a fumigation, and *nobody* could accidentally have overlooked the DOOR TO DEATH notices posted.
