Customer Reviews:
TOP FAVE!.......2006-08-06
This book is by far one of my favorite romances ever. Such an unusual story with very strong characters. The scenes of passion are well thought out with great emotional tension. LOVED this one!
Unique beginning. The hero is strong, but big hearted. I like the heroine too, but she got a bit annoying toward the end........2006-06-29
There are 117 reviews already, so here are some basic points:
I liked the way the story started. I can honestly say I've never read a book where the heroine sold herself into mistress-hood in a "house of illrepute." The characters in the auction scene are well written. You can feel Kelsey's shyness.
I liked Derek's character. He was dominant, but not a jerk. He took what he wanted, but did so slowly and respectfully. He is also very protective of his lady, insisting that everyone treat her with respect. As the story progresses, you watch him fall in love. He wants to be with Kelsey as much as possible. He takes her with him everywhere he goes. This was a nice switch from the typical romance story where the man denies his feelings and avoids the woman until the very end.
Kelsey's character is very believable, except towards the end. I was glad to see that she was smart and resourceful enough to earn money and support herself when Derek unknowingly left her alone and starving. The part I didn't like was the way she kept turning Derek down when he asked her to marry him. Oh please... what woman would say "No" to marriage with the man she loves because she is worried about the reaction of society? I couldn't buy that, and I was annoyed at how her refusal hurt Derek.
Overall, I really enjoyed the story. There were points where too many characters made the story "crowded", but I like the Malory family so I didn't mind. The love scenes are great. Derek is a tender- hearted but strong hero. The book is definitely worthwhile.
I won't be popular for saying this but...this was a bit boring...........2006-01-21
This is the second book by JL that I read this past year. I read many of her other books years ago, the moved away from her as I got bored and tried again in late 05' to early 06' to see if she was more interesting now. I also read "A Loving Scoundrel" (not bad) and then "Say You Love Me" (fair). Neither book was bad they simply weren't....great.
I'll just say in this book - the story was plausible and the characters believable, I just didn't feel any connection to the main hero and heroine Derek and Kelsey. I know a lot of Lindsay fans won't like any negative comments about their favorite author but, I'm coming from a general stand point of someone who does try very hard to read all the authors out there and like all the stories. I love "love stories" and want them all to be winners. But...I am honest when some stories don't work. It' only fair.
The plot itself was fine, the action and developments not unusual it's just...Derek wasn't all that interesting and frankly, neither was Kelsey. He was Mr. Nice guy doing all the right things and with all the right connections and she was of course beautiful, intelligent and from a good family too. From there...the plot was very basic - girl sells herself to help her family, she pretends to be someone she's not, great looking rich guy with title buys her to save her, makes her his mistress, they learn to like and love one another, he wants to marry her, she refuses to avoid scandals to both families, her aunt finds her once the truth is know and from there all the details, misconceptions and issues are brought to life. Especially other family secrets long hidden along the way. There were moments when I thought things might get interesting such as Kelsey slapping Derek the first time he got frisky with her as she thought it was his cousin that bought her and not him, then when Kelsey was left alone at his cottage for days without food, water or provisions and she had to fend for herself or when Kelsey finally told cousin Reggie about the whole situation and the truth finally came out but...nothing went much farther than the basics.
Many side characters were interesting in this book - the ENTIRE Malory family - especially the uncles. Even with the evil villain Ashford brought into the story, everything was predictable - Ashford would find Kelsey, make her pay for going with Derek instead of him at the auction and a serious brawl would ensue.
Nothing was awful or boring or terrible in this story - it just stayed a bit light and perky for me. Give me MORE in a historical romance - passion, intensity, desire, EMOTIONS. I imagine those of you who are already JL fans will continue to be fans with this book. Those who are not fans will find this story just ok, not at all memorable. Those like me who read a ton of romance books, know there are much better authors to be found out there. I feel that JL writes so many love stories over the years that either she or the writing is getting very bland. After all these years...her writing should have taken her to higher levels but, has not. Perhaps that's what the editors and publishers want?
I tried to give her another chance but, I'm bored again. I'll move on and work with other authors that give me that rush of excitement and joy I feel when I open a great book, stay up all night to finish it and then smile when I close the last page knowing I read an incredible story. I don't get that in JL books sorry to say. Wish I could give glowing reviews but, I can't. So, she gets three stars for a decent read but, no more.
Good weekend reading.......2005-12-11
The book starts off a little redundent, but after the story slowly unfolds, it was hard to put down. Kelsey is the perfect heroine. She's charming, witty, sweet, and innocent. Derek's character on the other hand is not as well developed. His feelings for Kelsey is not well expressed. I found the fact that he had to wait until the last chapter of the book to say that he loves her is ridiculous. The story of their romamce is not well developed in this book. Other than that, it's a good way to spend a relaxing and dateless weekend.
Not the best but worth the read.......2005-09-09
I love the Malory series one of my fave romance series to date. This book doesn't really do it justice. I find Derek a tad shallow and lacking much of any depth. However Kelsey is by far a wonderful heroine. An overall ok book but again worth the read and a couple laughs in true Malory style.

Customer Reviews:
Intriguing plot and ingenious MO.......2007-07-25
In a twisted cult ritual on the banks of the Black Bayou outside New Orleans, teen Adrianna Small learns that she is to become the sacrificial bride to an evil polygamist cult leader's son as his rite of passage. All her instincts cause her to fight back in a deadly quest for her safety, and she eventually emerges from the swamp alone, frightened, and determined to escape the rough life her mother exposed her to. Thirteen years later, she has once again reinvented herself, this time as Britta Berger, the editor of an erotic magazine, and is in receipt of graphic photos of a serial killers latest conquest. When she turns them into the police, she and Jean Paul Dubois, the lead detective are immediately smitten with each other, though they both plan to steer clear for their own reasons. As the killer closes in and makes Britta his confidante, it is apparent that the killings as well as the killer's interest in Britta are tied to her past. More victims are found, and soon it is apparent that a trap must be set to catch the culprit once and for all. The suspects are piling up, many with plenty to hide, but are any of them killers?
Herron's post-Katrina bayou thriller will have the reader enthralled from the opening paragraph. She has, created an ingenious MO for her serial killer (and pretty graphic at times), as well as a conflicted hero and tortured heroine. The chemistry between the leads is scorching. I did feel a little shortchanged on the identity of the culprit - I hate when authors create tons of red herrings and suspects only to toss in a surprise character with little page-time. Other than that, my only gripe is the end came too quickly.
Compelling read...........2007-06-28
A vicious killer is terrorizing New Orleans as Mardi Gras approaches. Britta Berger is haunted by her past, a past that appears connected to the ritualistic murders. Detective Jean-Paul Dubois is determined to stop the killings. Always focused on his job, Jean-Paul is conflicted over his feelings for Britta. Will Britta and Jean-Paul be able to look beyond their pasts to the simmering attraction between them? With a wide cast of potential suspects, Jean-Paul must find this madman before all is lost.
Rita Herron takes readers on a wild ride, full of numerous twists and turns. Surprisingly, the identity of the killer isn't easily deduced as Ms. Herron does an excellent job at maintaining a high level of suspense throughout the tale. SAY YOU LOVE ME has a dark edge to it that keeps escalating the tension level until the dramatic conclusion is reached.
Character development is key to the success of SAY YOU LOVE ME. Britta has a hard shell but Ms. Herron allows the reader to see through the cracks to the soft, caring woman inside. Jean-Paul is all Alpha male, determined to be the selfless hero and yet embarrassed by the recognition for his deeds at the same time. The cast of secondary characters provides multiple possibilities for the unknown killer, and readers will enjoy sifting through the hints and innuendos, guessing at which façade hides the heart of a killer.
SAY YOU LOVE ME is a compelling, albeit almost eerie, read. Rita Herron writes a powerful romance while teasing the reader with glimpses of some myths and legends surrounding the bayou. Readers should be forewarned that there are some very disturbing scenes and images, as Rita Herron explores the seamy side of the bayou. Take a chance and curl up with SAY YOU LOVE ME... it's sure to make a lasting impression.

Ugh.......2007-06-19
This book crosses way over the line from Romance into...I don't even know what to call it...how about skanky. I liked the main male character and sometimes the main female, but the depravity of everything else in the book finally had me just putting the book down. And based on the descriptions in this book, I never want to go to New Orleans...surely it isn't as depraved as it is described in this book....at least not on the whole. Nothing romantic or charming about it...just dark and dirty. Definitely do not recommend.
Secrets uncovered in New Orleans and the Black Bayou.......2007-06-14
Britta Berger, columnist for New Orleans' popular erotic magazine hears the secrets and fantasies of the city's populace. Beneath her public mask, Britta has dark secrets of her own, especially of one past terrifying night. Britta receives an anonymous note, "I know your secrets. And you know mine..." with details from a possible murder included, she contacts Detective Jean-Paul Dubois. As the details of ritualistic murders unfold, Jean-Paul realizes that Britta might be the key to solving the string of serial killings that begin just as Mardi Gras approaches. Can Britta and Jean-Paul overcome the dark secrets of their past in this race against time? Most importantly, can they trust one another enough to reveal those secrets before it is too late?
Rita Herron writes the landscape of her novels brilliantly. New Orleans and the Black Bayou are dark, breathing entities that infuse the novel and the characters. The landscape itself is a character. Herron captures the dark underside of the South that hides and lurks in the landscape and in the soul. Rita Herron has a style and a way of writing suspense that keeps the clues and possibilities open. Even if the reader knows the villain --- we hear his voice --- which one of these twisted characters has gone way over the edge? It could be any of them. The suspense encourages a fast-paced excited read while the landscape and the romance encourages the reader to savor every word. The romance of the novel builds as the hero and heroine fight their own personal demons in the hunt. The reader feels the heroine's struggle with the perfect amount of psychological realism poetically portrayed to feel her depth. Together with the hero, can two wounded souls heal the darkness that emerges from the interior and physical landscapes that surround them?
Rita Herron writes about dark, twisted people and their secrets. On the flipside, she writes about the subtle light, the emerging courage of her characters, and a love born from the secret depths of the heart and soul.
exhilarating serial killer romantic suspense .......2007-06-11
In New Orleans, Naked Desires erotic publications columnist Britta Berger knows how fortunate she is to be alive. Thirteen years ago, a deadly pervert almost killed her. Though wary, she feels safe in the Big Easy until now. A ritual serial killer using the same modus operandi of the psychopath she escaped from has begun a murder spree that frightens the locals especially Britta.
With Mardi Gras coming soon, Detective Jean-Paul Dubois is obsessed with finding the serial killer haunting the city. He soon concludes that the maniac is working his way towards Britta, the one who got away. Jean-Paul vows to keep Britta safe, but hides from her that she already owns his Cajun heart.
This exhilarating serial killer romantic suspense is enhanced by the changing perspectives that include the lead couple and the psychopath so that the audience reads a strong thriller. The maniac is so insane that he kills others as he slowly targets his victim Britta who he believes deserves his vengeance. This is a fine tense psychological police procedural thriller with an incredibly discerning insight into the irrational mind of the insane killer

Pretty good.......2001-03-17
Say you love me is the story of Christian and Jordan. Christian feels like Jordan puts more time until his work instead of with her, so she decides to leave for awhile and he goes after her. They had been trying but being unlucky to have a baby. When Christian finally gets pregnant, she has a tough choice to make.
Talk about two stories in one!!.......2000-11-17
I absolutely loved this story. I love it when a man drops everything to be with his woman. Okay, so it took Jordan a while to figure it out, but he did eventually! I love how Jordon and Christian met and fall in love. I liked the fact that the story did not focus on the past but on the present, but gave us just enough of the couple's history for us to have a good understanding of why the couple isn't doing so well in the present! I loved all the characters in this story. Alex, Malcolm, Rosa, and Noah were great. Alex and Malcolm's story was the little extra that made this book, in my eyes, the bomb! The development of each story was great. And the ending was the best and very touching. I cried!! I loved it and I hope you like it to because it teaches us to forgive each other, put our pride aside, living our lives to the fullest, to always communicate with our loved ones, and to never ever put anything before the ones we love! Always remember, love conquers all!! Nice work Byrd!
Words of Beauty.......2000-08-31
Once you open up "Say You Love Me", you will not be able to put it down. I finished the book in 24 hours. With each movement of my eyes, unfolded more beauty in Adrianne's writings. I've already ordered "Loves Deception". I can hardly wait to read it. You have a fan for life. Among my favorites are "I Promise" and "Defenseless".
Enjoyed The Finale'.......2000-03-14
If you like novels that deal with the ups and downs of marriage, this is one to read. Thanks Ms Byrd for bringing the sequel that includes Christian, Jordan, Alex and Malcolm. The story has both the seriousness and the intimacy which I truly like in a story. The book is a very easy read, very enjoyable and heartwarming. Some of my other favorite books by this author: I Promise, Forget Me Not and Defenseless.
Excellent Writting.......2000-02-17
I thought the book was extraordinarily written. It makes you feel as though you have a close relationship with all the characters. It kept me on my toes from the beginning to the end. Although it had a sad part to it, the overall book was excellent.

Book Description
Reunited at last with his long-lost wife, Libertus returns to Glevum. But his new-found happiness is rudely interrupted by the news that a visiting Roman ambassador has been murdered in the temple of the Imperial cult. Events take a bizarre and chilling turn when the body disappears, and a superstitious terror grips the town when unearthly wails are heard coming from the temple, and bloodstains begin to appear as if from nowhere.
Customer Reviews:
Another Excellent Offering in the Libertus Mysteries.......2007-02-13
Rosemary Rowe is the pseudonym of Rosemary Aitken, a highly qualified academic, who has written more than half a dozen bestselling textbooks on English Language and communication. She has written fiction for many years under her married name.
The murdered body of a visiting ambassador from Rome brings preparations for the Emperor's birthday to an abrupt halt and yet again Libertus is called in to help in the investigations. The case becomes even more mysterious when the body disappears and then unearthly wails and mysterious bloodstains start to appear from nowhere.
The townspeople, already riddled with their own superstitions are gripped with terror and Libertus finds himself in extreme danger when he becomes the target of an angry mob, accusing him of angering the gods and demanding his death in an attempt to appease them. Nothing is as it appears and Libertus begins to uncover more unsettling events and yet more deaths before the truth can finally be revealed.
Libertus flounders.......2003-10-06
Rowe's latest Libertus offering - `The Legatus Mystery'- proves the weakest to date. I'm not sure why but the entire effort is somewhat muddied, probably because Rowe allows Libertus to lose the normally cool-headed thought process and end up supernaturally confused and fleeing for his life from an misguided Glevum mob who believe that he's brought the wrath of the Gods down on them. All of which throws us out of kilter and turns him nearly into an emotional wreck. Very un-Libertus-like.
This fifth installment has our sleuth returning from London with his `wife' Gwellia, to be ordered to uncover the amazing case of the vanishing corpse from the inner sanctum of the temple as found by its sub-sevir, Meritus. Several others are in the frame, includng the Pontifex, Scribonius, Optimus, a lisping slave named somewhat unkindly by Libertus and Junio as Lithputh (though it does serve its own misleading purpose eventually), Hirsus and Trinculus. However, the plot takes more a case of discovering who the original body was - presumably an unknown missing legate, judging by the recovered ring - rather than concluding there actually was a murder and who the suspects were - and therein lies the key to the entire mystery.
So, we actually get to see Libertus laying a mosaic, tentatively drag the usual adulterous Roman matron in to the script, have some further insights as to Libertus' new and changing relationships with both Gwellia and Junio, profess our usual irritation with Marcus who is becoming excellent at jumping to ridiculous conclusions whilst being prickly about insinuations of his stupidity by his client and stomp around a poorly portrayed temple before ucocvering the true murder and figuring out whodunnit.
What Rowe is extremely good at it sending the reader down a completely blind alley. When the deouement reveals the culprit(s) you instantly see where the obvious clues were, but she has ingeniously hidden them in plain sight - always the mark of a good murder mystery author. However, as I stated at the very first, this is the weakest to date and I confess I put it aside several times to read other novels before finally finishing. I assume it's merely a blip as every Roman sleuth has an off day, and that the next installment will be back to the promise offered in the first four.
