5 out of 5 stars Wonderful story!.......2005-11-22

This book is one of those you may find difficult to put down. It is a sweet story and I enjoyed it so much I have losned it to all my friends.

4 out of 5 stars A lovely tearjerker of a book.......2005-08-18

I finished this book in one afternoon. The time flew by and I kept turning the pages eager to see what happened next. I love this type of story.I have always loved to see elderly people in books and movies turn back the clock and share the memories of the passionate love affairs of their youth. Besides the eloquent writing, the book also had good underlying messages.

5 out of 5 stars A sweet story.......2004-12-28

The love stories described in this book were wonderful! I thoroughly enjoyed hearing Sarah's story and how she became
reunited with the man that she loved, through a song she wrote just for him. I loved how she used her story and song to
minister to Beth, who is struggling in her own marriage.

The story reminded me of the return of the prodigal son. Sarah ran off to Nashville to chase a dream, leaving the man that
she loved. Only, she gets entangled into such a negative lifestyle. Broken, she returns to her parents, who welcome her
back with open arms. And eventually, she is reunited with her loved one with open arms. And the same with Beth, with her
husband.

I loved the Red Gloves theme in this book as well, and how Kingsbury used each letter of "The Red Gloves" for each of the 12 Days of Christmas that Sarah uses to tell her love story. And the Red Glove ideas for ministering to the elderly were great, too.

4 out of 5 stars Short and sweet.......2004-12-14

This is a very quick, but sentimental read. About an elderly woman who has one last gift to give in her life-a miracle. She just has to find out who to give it to. The story is heart warming and, though short, you get a real sense of the emotions felt by the characters, especially Beth and Sarah. It is a great Christmastime read, and worth recommending to friends, especially those who need a pick-me-up. As all of Kingsbury's books in the Red Gloves series, the author places a special pair of red gloves for us to find in the book, as well as "Red Glove" project ideas for us to do in our own lives. Very commendable. I would recommend this as a great short read for you and your family this Christmas season.

5 out of 5 stars A warm, meaningful Chistmas Story.......2004-12-04

Karen Kingsbury has found a formula for success before --- that's why she has over a million and a half books in print --- and she has definitely found it again in her Red Gloves series, of which the newest title is SARAH'S SONG. The red gloves, she explains on her website (www.karenkingsbury.com), symbolize red because "red is the color of Christ's love at Christmastime, a season of giving.

The first books in the Red Gloves series were also alliterative: MAGGIE'S MIRACLE and GIDEON'S GIFT, making SARAH'S SONG seem somewhat sensible. (Oops, I got carried away...) Eighty-six-year-old Sarah Lindeman begins her annual Christmas ritual of placing twelve handmade paper ornaments on a small plastic tree, and hopes that as she works her way through her personal "twelve days of Christmas" (the twelve days before December 25, for Sarah), that she will be able to reach out, through her song and her story, to someone in need.

At first Sarah believes that Beth Baldwin, the young married nurse on her floor, will not be the person she reaches. But as Sarah's ornament days progress and she finds herself in the thick of old and painful memories, Beth finds herself in the midst of domestic chaos and marital trauma. The beautiful and meaningful song that Sarah herself wrote and sings on each day of her ritual winds its way into Beth's heart and mind until she finds herself asking Sarah for counsel.

Sarah eagerly shares the story of her paper decorations, each of which has a name ("Excitement," "Rebellion") representing an action or period in Sarah's story of finding love. A naturally talented singer, Sarah had longed as a young woman to "make it" in Nashville. But when she leaves her tiny hometown for that city, she finds that the road to stardom is paved with roadblocks.

And roadblocks are what Sarah's song is all about. Beth listens towards the end of the twelve days as Sarah tells a hard tale about believing that she had lost everything --- and therefore turning her life and story over to God. '''...finally one Sunday I took the situation to God.' Beth's eyes were wide; she looked like she wouldn't have moved from her chair for anything in the world. 'And?' Sarah smiled, slow and full. 'He gave me my song.'"

Beth, torn about her marriage, eagerly awaits the next installment of Sarah's story and song, but before Sarah is finished, a crisis occurs that means she may not be able to do so. Will she release "the secret of love" to Beth? And what role do the red gloves play in this story? The answers are all there --- and so is a warm, meaningful Christmas story that has little of the frippery and ornamentation of most commercial fiction published at this time of year.

Book Description

Nearly three decades ago, Paula D'Arcy began to write letters to her unborn child--letters in which she chronicled her emotions, hopes and dreams. A few years later, Paula's daughter and husband were killed in a tragic automobile accident?and the diary to Sarah became a journal that today brings tremendous healing, peace, and comfort to those immersed in their own grief.
This new edition includes a foreword from Gerald Sittser, author of A Grace Disguised. As well, it updates the original edition with two new afterwords: one from the author, the second from the author's second daughter, whom Paula D'Arcy was carrying in her womb at the time of the accident that killed her first child and husband.

This was such a great help for me when I was going through the grieving process. I connected with the author's spirituality in finally finding hapiness after grieving the tradgedy she suffered. I am quite a fan of many of her books. She seemed a warm person when I had seen her speak at a local book discussion.

My son (and his daycare class) LOVE this book, especially with the CD. (It is kind of catchy.) Highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Follow the Moon Book and CD.......2006-04-02

This is a wonderful story- so many children i have shared it with have asked to hear it again and again. I have found this book to be a lovely way to metaphor more difficult times and choices in ones adult life. such as keeping your focus on the true light (Jesus/God) and not being distracted. I have recommended it to many. The CD is beautiful- altho the singer's voice is a little strange at the beginning you will find yourself thinking no one else could have done it justice at the end. enjoy and share it with many.

5 out of 5 stars Kids love this story when I read it to them!.......2001-01-23

I found this book at the Natural History Museum (Smithsonian) in Washington, D.C. I first noticed the hadsome boy on the cover and then decided to see what the story was about. It is an excellent story about a kid who cares about animals and nature. It is a cute story of the boy protecting a baby turtle from harm. He is a good protector of this turtle until it finds safety by "following the moon". I read this story to the children in my YMCA school program and they loved every moment. It definately kept their attention.

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful illustration!.......2000-01-11

I'm just VERY impressed by the illustration. Incredible! Story line depicts faithfulness and freindship

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful story for all ages.......1999-07-31

This book was purchased for my class science library. My students instantly fell in love with it and it was one of the year's favorites. I have shared it with colleagues and gotten the same reaction. It's simply lovely!

    • Heal the hearts of those affected by abortion or suicide
    • Provide guidance to those dealing with adoption
    • Increase gratitude for children and family bonds
    • Magnify insight into life’s purposes and opportunities

The author draws upon 20 years of pioneering research, clinical study, interviews with hundreds of people, and years of writing and speaking about pre-birth experiences. You will feel of their love, along with their yearning to join their chosen families on earth and fulfill their missions here.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Fascinating, Comforting.......2007-07-24

I think Sarah Hinze has produced a top quality book with "Songs of the Morning Stars". She combines her thoughts on the topic with tons of real stories also related to the topic (you can never have too many of them!)This book will make you think about where you came from. I found it interesting as well as comforting. It's one of it's kind because there are so many accounts today of Near Death Experiences but so little of Pre-Birth Experiences. The table of contents reads:
    Meet the Morning Starts
    Before Birth, What?
    Children are Eternal Souls
    And Some are Cast Away
    The Gift of Souls
Twelve 'Truths' about humans, God and the Purpose of Life

5 out of 5 stars Second Time Around.......2006-01-28

I was given a signed copy (by Sarah Weeks) and cassette tape when my boys were young (they are 15 & 17 now). My boys & I always had it in our car for road trips and knew all of the words to every song. I no longer have the cassette and am going to buy the CD for the book, as I am pregnant now with a little girl and can't wait to share the songs with her!

    4 out of 5 stars neat book.......2004-11-08

This is a unique book and cd combination. Each page features an animal and a song written from the point of view of that animal. Some of the animals featured are a dinosaur, a panda and a turtle.

Most of the songs are soft and slow. This would make a great bedtime cd and book.

Young children who are animal lovers will enjoy this book and CD. It will be neat for them to try and think the way their favorite animal thinks.

My mother bought Crocodile Smile for my son when he was one. Heloves it and is always asking for "the blue tape," but I'mthe one who can't stop humming it. It is the most interesting children's music that we own (both music and lyrics). I'm buying it for gifts for others. END

The songs are fun for the kids, however they are poinantly meaningful for the adults. The artists voice is very soothing and I use it every night to put my 3yo son to bed. I love this book and tape... It is one of my house holds favorites!

Food writer Carolyn gets to challenge her taste-testing skills once again-this time, in Barcelona. Her first feast is for the eyes-at a modern art museum where her friend Roberta is the resident scholar. There, she catches a performance art piece about death, planted a little too firmly in reality. One of the actors is not acting-she's dead...as well as a dead-ringer for Roberta. And now, Carolyn is in the middle of a new investigation into a very unsavory crime.

I had fun with this book--it paid off and I like the characters. Good story and kept me reading.

4 out of 5 stars Not the best in the series.......2004-02-23

I did not enjoy the Perils of Paella as much as the previous Carolyn Blue books. I thought the missing Jason created a void. I also had a hard time keeping all the Spanish names straight at first. The inspector's perspective was a welcome change but I kept hoping Jason would show up. Interaction between Carolyn, Jason and the inspector would have been interesting. I recommend this delightful series and hope the next installment has Jason featured more. I find the travel descriptions as well as the historical facts very entertaining. Hopefully Carolyn and the inspector's paths will cross somewhere in a future book.

5 out of 5 stars Murder in Barcelona.......2004-02-15

Carolyn and Jason Blue are off to Barcelona. She arrives earlier to spend some time with her friend Roberta Hecht (Robbie). Robbie is a resident Miro scholar currently at a modern art museum there.

When Carolyn arrives, the security guard and receptionist won't let her in to the exhibit with her suitcase to wait for her friend. Finally she is able to leave her suitcase at the front desk, pay the exorbitant entrance fee and begin to tour the Tapas Triage exhibit. This was performance art. Each partitioned space contained a hospital bed. Most contained a patient (art student). There were creatures that came into the exhibit. They were representing Life and Death. The Angel of Life and Joy brought tapas. An Englishman tourist determined that the next performer to "die" would be the one that didn't get the tapas. When Carolyn goes to the last patient, she discovers that she resembles her friend Robbie. She thought she was playing a joke on her. Then she realizes that this woman is not Robbie and worse, she is dead.

Inspector Ildefons Pujol I Serra ("Inspector Pujol") is called into head up the investigation. Immediately he suspects Carolyn or Robbie because they are Americans.

Then Robbie discovers that her stepson, Henri Samuel Fauree (Sammie) has gone missing from his American school. Then her husband Hugh tells her that his passport and some money are missing. Robbie contact the consul and finds that Sammie arrived in Barcelona a few days ago. They begin searching for him.

Robbie and Carolyn get into many interesting and dangerous situations in this book. There are many suspects in the death at the museum and they hope to help Inspector Pujol discover the real killer before they are arrested.

I like Carolyn a lot. She is a delightful character and I find the books in this series to be a light and enjoyable read. I must say that at first I had a lot of trouble with the foreign names in this book. Once I stuck with it, I was able to keep everyone straight. I liked the setting of Barcelona but some of the places that Carolyn and/or Robbie went are not places I would want to see.

          I highly recommend this book!

3 out of 5 stars not one of the better installments but still enjoyable.......2004-01-09

This is the fourth Carolyn Blue culinary mystery. This time, Carolyn is sunny Barcelona hoping to sample more delicious Catalan food (Carolyn's been to Barcelona before), as well as enjoy the historic sights of the magnificent city, but finding herself entangled in yet another murder investigation instead. Unfortunately for me, I didn't find this particualr installment to be as enjoyable as the previous one, "Chocolate Quake."

When Carolyn's scientist husband, Jason, is invited to give a few lectures in Salamanca and Barcelona, Carolyn naturally decides to tag along. This will give her a chance to sample the excellent Catalan fare to be had in Barcelona, and write a few articles about the food and history of the city. And when Carolyn learns that her good friend, Roberta Hecht is in Barcelona, having accepted a 3 month stint at the Espirit de Gaudi i Miro, Carolyn decides to go ahead to Barcelona in order to spend some time with her friend before Jason joins her. The last thing that Carolyn expected when she turns up at the museum feeling extremely jet-lagged and rumpled, is to make the unsettling discovery that there is a dead body in the performance art piece being performed at the museum. And not just any dead body, but that of a young woman who bears an uncanny resemblance to her friend, Roberta. Is someone after Roberta? But why would anyone want to murder Roberta? Carolyn soon learns, however, that in the small and stifling world of the Espirit de Gaudi i Miro, where absurd jealousies and pettiness seems part of the course, everyone seems to believe that Roberta is guilty of the crime. Knowing full well that Roberta is incapable of murdering anyone, Carolyn is determined to help her friend prove her innocence even if it means getting entangled in a murder investigation once again...

While on the whole "The Perils of Paella" was not a bad read, it was not one of Nancy Fairbanks better efforts either. Unlike the previous books in this series, this novel was really quite short on any interesting historical tit-bits, although I rather enjoyed her descriptions of the Gaudi architecture to be seen throughout the city. And the book also seemed to lack that slightly lighthearted and humorous touch that characterized previous installments. Poor Carolyn didn't seem to have all that much fun in Barcelona at all -- but perhaps a lack of real sleep and only frequenting absolute dives might have had something to do with this. Or could it have been the effect of Carolyn's demanding and high maintenance friend, Roberta? I'll admit that Roberta was just got on my nerves, and I really wanted Carolyn to grow a backbone and tell Roberta off more often! Alas this didn't happen frequently enough for me. And aside from Carolyn, the only other main character that was interesting and engaging was the Spanish police inspector in charge of the case, Inspector Pujol. Inspector Pujol's sardonic narratives alone made this book an enjoyable read, and I found myself wishing fervently that the entire novel had been written from Pujol's point of view. So that even though the mystery subplot was so-so and the clues were scarce (although there was a healthy number of suspects -- too bad Nancy Fairbanks didn't do enough with them), I will say that this was an entertaining read because of Carolyn's and Pujol's engaging and entertaining narratives.

5 out of 5 stars Fast and funny who-done-it.......2004-01-08

Ever since her children have grown up, Carolyn Blue is doing things that she wants to do. She is a syndicated food columnist, published writer and jets around the world, accompanying her husband to science conferences. Of course she always finds time to solve murder investigations along the way.

Carolyn is currently in Barcelona visiting her friend Roberta Hecht, who is working in the research project at the El Esperit de Gaudi i Miro museum. When Carolyn goes to the museum she makes it a point to see the interactive exhibit "Tapas Triage" but is startled to find a dead woman who looks like her friend. It turns out that the woman was the mistress of the owner of the museum. In the xenophobic chauvinistic eyes of Inspector Pojol, who doesn't have a high opinion of American women, Roberta is the only suspect. Carolyn feels obligated to prove her friend's innocence without implicating Roberta's stepson who thinks he might have killed the victim.

THE PERILS OF PAELLA is obviously a title twist of "The Perils of Pauline" as the heroine goes from one dangerous adventure into another one. Nancy Fairbanks has some mouth watering descriptions of Catalonian repasts so don't read this culinary mystery on an empty stomach something this reviewer learned first hand. However, my spouse rejected my placing culpability on Ms. Fairbanks for a large dessert I devoured. There are enough suspects to keep the storyline interesting without overwhelming the audience with trivia. This fast and funny
