At last, USA Today bestselling author Lynn Kurland tells the story of Patrick MacLeod-the first MacLeod to discover the secret of time travel through the Scottish forest next to the family keep...
Customer Reviews:
Okay.......2007-03-01
This was okay. I've read better time travel novels. But when you've got nothing else to do, this will kill time and will make the time passable.
One of Kurland's Best.......2006-12-15
This is the story of Patrick MacLeod, who was the first of the MacLeod's to discover the time traveling portals that has spawned several books based on their clan's travels. Patrick lives in present day but lives in an ancestoral castle. Patrick was married once, but his wife Lisa was pregnant by another man and when her lover abandoned her, she killed herself. Lisa's father Gilbert believes Patrick murdered her because Patrick never told them the details of Lisa's death in the attempt to save them pain. Patrick has shielded his heart since then and can't believe it when he feels a connection with the American he sees on Culloden field. They seem to share the time lapse experience of seeing the real Culloden battle but Patrick runs her off with his rudeness. He decides to track her down and apologize because he can't shake the feeling they are somehow connected.
Madelyn Phillips is an out of work attorney who was dumped six weeks before her wedding. Her ex fiance Bentley has gotten her fired, and ruined her finances. Madelyn decides to go on their honeymoon trip to Scotland by herself since it was prepaid and she has dreamed of going to Scotland all her life. When Madelyn arrives at the Bed and Breakfast in Scotland run by Robby MacLeod it is to find Bentley has arrived before her and stolen the reservation. Robby is offended by the arrogant Bentley and offers Madelyn another room free of charge. Determined to have Madelyn under his thumb, Bentley steals her suitcase, then has her credit card cancelled and her rental car taken away. When Robby helps her with transportation, Madelyn goes to Culloden field and is stunned to find herself in the middle of a real battle, when her mind clears she is back in present time and she sees a gorgeous Scotsman (Patrick) standing in the middle of the field. Madelyn approaches him determined that he is her soulmate but his rudeness changes her mind. When Patrick tracks Madelyn down and finds out what Bentley has done he offers his services as a tour guide. Patrick finds himself drawn to Madelyn like no other woman and starts fantasizing about a future with her. Madelyn hates being a charity case, but she finds herself drawn to Patrick. She fantasizes about him being her Scottish Laird hero but knows real life will soon step in and she must find a job and pay off her student loans. When Bentley continues to pursue them, Madelyn attempts to run away and finds herself transported back in time. She is captured by the enemies of the MacLeods, the Fergussons. Patrick knows he must go back in time and rescue Madeline and wishes he would have pledged his love beforehand. These two must face several obstacles, the Fergussons, Gilbert, Bentley and both families in order to find happiness. This is an interesting story with ghosts, history and intrigue. If you're looking for a lot of sex scenes, you will be disappointed. Lynn Kurland is not much for the sexual details found in most romances, she leaves more to the imagination. She does however, take great pains to develop the characters and their relationship to where you don't miss the physicalness of the relationship. Great job Miss Kurland. I would love to see a story about Madelyn's sister Sunny.
My favorite MacLeod story..........2006-10-21
This is Patrick MacLeod's story. Patrick MacLeod being Jamie's brother (from Dance Through Time) and also born in medieval times, of course. He was hardened by an unfaithful wife, long before she died and made him a young widower. He's not ready to trust his heart to anyone, least of all a Yank! Madelyn was... well... she was experiencing, as she put it, a vacation-in-the-toilet.
But somehow they keep getting throw together. Patrick undertakes the mission of rescuing Madelyn from her vindictive ex-fiance, which she's more than willing to get him do. But echoes of destiny keep stirring whenever their together. And Madelyn doesn't quite know what to think of Patrick's combination of ruthlessness and laid-back nonchallance... of his passionate kisses and quiet reserve. Then destiny sweeps them back several centuries.
I like the way Lynn weaves echos of a past that hasn't happened yet with the present. It's a good time-travel story, with a few ghosts thrown in a secondary characters, although they don't affect the plot much at all. But I love it for the emotion you get to experience as Patrick and Madelyn fall in love.
Absolutely spellbinding!.......2006-07-23
Patrick MacLeod is a man haunted by a tragic past, that of the death of his first wife, and an ex-father-in-law who is convinced that his daughter was murdered. Madelyn Phillips is a woman trying to escape an ambitious but cowardly opportunist who used to be her fiancé. Her former fiancé follows her to Scotland and proceeds to make her life miserable, convinced that if he took everything away from Madelyn, she would come back to him.
Patrick and Madelyn first meet on the fields of Culloden and something magical happens. Their attraction to each other seems timeless, as if they've known each other before and have loved before. Despite their reservations, Patrick and Madelyn are thrown together because of Madelyn's predicament. Patrick repeatedly rescues her from the clutches of her former fiancé but finds himself losing his heart to her. But there are secrets in Patrick's life that Madelyn must learn first before anything can happen between them.
This was such a great book to read! I absolutely loved it! Lynn Kurland's talent with words is extraordinary. She weaves an enchanting story that lures you in to the world of her fictional characters until time fades and naught matters but the magical world she's built around you. Basically you're hooked from start to finish.
Oh, OK.......2006-02-28
Patric's story was a bit draggy, compared to Jamie's and Alex's this one took to long to get going, and much to long before we time traveled. I'm not saying it isn't a good story but didn't contain the same humor as the other two.
Would still recommend it however.

In an unusual mix of fiction and science--no, it's not science fiction--8-year-old author Omri Glaser traces the hydrologic cycle that starts with a tear. The falling tear helps form a puddle, which evaporates to become a cloud, which makes the rain fall, which helps the garden grow, which produces an onion, which causes more tears! Color-soaked pages hold simple, sparse text in easy-to-read bold print; the story should be lingered over and used as a starting point for discussions about earth science, nature, and life cycles. The illustrations, created by the artist team of Byron Glaser and Sandra Higashi, are digitally produced: two-page spreads of solid color and minimal artwork alternate with more elaborate spreads depicting broad stretches of sky, ponds, and gardens. Clouds are labeled with their correct categorizations (cumulus, nimbostratus, cirrus, etc.), and a very loose diagram of photosynthesis, again with proper terminology (carbon dioxide, soil, oxygen, sunshine) is a good introduction to this phenomenon, without bogging down in age-inappropriate specifics. The youthful age of the author can serve as an inspiration to would-be writers and illustrators. (Ages 3 to 7) --Emilie Coulter

Round the Garden.......2000-08-01
This book is a delight for readers of all ages. It's hard to believe that a 9-year-old can have such insight into the way the world works. Omri is a literary genius and I hope to read more from him in the near future. The illustrations are great, too!
This book is pleasing - aesthetically and intellectually!.......2000-06-25
I feel this book is fabulous in the way it traces the journey of a water drop throughout its cyclical life. Being a Naturalist whose task it is to educate young people about the water cycle, this book takes such a complex thing and makes it seem simple - which it is! How wonderful it is to say (and see) this book was written by a child for other children.
Book Description
Far to the north along the Pacific coast of Canada lies an area where abundant rainfall nourishes everything from bright green grasses and colorful wildflowers to ancient, towering cedar, spruce, and sitka trees. This rainforest is the perfect habitat for salmon and a wide variety of birds, insects, and animals, most notably a unique type of black bear called the spirit bear, which is sometimes clothed in creamy white fur and has become legendary among the First Nation people who live in the region. Noted naturalist Dorothy Hinshaw Patent describes the elusive spirit bear and its home, which is in danger of being destroyed by loggers and settlers as they clear-cut the ancient forests for lumber. Every part of the delicate ecosystem is threatened. But steps are now being taken to set aside a protected spirit bear sanctuarya living museum where people could come and see the spirit bear's realm. The beautiful, detailed watercolors by Deborah Milton will transport readers to this magnificent yet vanishing region.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting and beautiful book.......2007-01-13
This beautifully illustrated book is interesting and informative. I had purchased it for my 6 year old, who enjoyed looking at it, but prefers a fictional story to a non-fictional account. I believe it will be considered a treasure in a few years. I would recommend this book if you are interested in rainforests, the far north, or spirit bear, or if you just want a lovely book.

Book Description
Back in Las Vegas after a holiday trip to the big apple, feline detective Midnight Louie witnesses death on the Nile when the battling Egyptian barges outside the Oasis hotel bring a dead body to the surface. The soggy victim is well known to Louie's redheaded, high-heeled human companion, Temple Barr: her two best beaux are loosely related to the drowned man, and both have reasons to want him dead. Perhaps Temple can finally choose between handsome hotline counselor Matt Devine and the mysterious magician, Ma Kinsella--by finding out which of them is a killer. And then there are the new girls in town: an inscrutable lady magician named Shangri-La, who may play a bigger role in this scenario than anyone might think; and her winsome Siamese familiar, who may solve Louie's problems by giving him the key to her heart--or the key to solving the mystery.
Customer Reviews:
Love the series.......2003-08-18
Once again Carole Nelson Douglas has written another wonderful continuation for the Midnight Louie series. I have loved this series from the first time I read Catnap and It gets better with each book. I'm sure we all feel for Mister Matt Devine now that Temple Barr is back together with the "Mystifying Max". and poor Louie!!! He has some luck with the ladies of the feline purrsuasion. All I have to say is, Carole Nelson Douglas, Keep up the AWESOME work.
Everything but the kitchen sink.......2000-03-06
I've read all books in the series (which I'm normally fond of), but this one was just a little too overloaded with characters, plots, and angst. I didn't really care about the too out-there Shangri-la villianess or her cat, and I was annoyed with the heroine Temple (who actually seemed to be more in the background). I think Ms. Douglas does a much better job juggling a complicated storyline in the next book, Cat in an Indigo Mood.
Life is too short to waste it on a book like this........1999-04-13
I simply did not understand the story. I had to force myself to continue to read and when I was finally finished - I could hardly believe it. I felt cheated and betrayed. I could hardly understand what had happened and could not figure out the ending. Was the mystery solved? Who was the killer? I could only guess. So I visited this site to read other people's review and was stunned to find to find that the average rate was 5 stars! They must be loyal to the author or be crazy about anything that has to do with cats. Or I must be from Mars. I love books and I love mysteries - but this is the worst mystery I have ever read. Perhaps the author should consider another genre of writing. I feel bad giving a bad review but want to warn others not to read this book.
One of the best series ever!.......1999-03-13
I've read all of the first nine books, except for the first and they are absolutley incredible!. I just ordered the first one and I'm getting ready to order the tenth one INDIGO MOOD. The books are fast paced and very exciting, I read 8 of the books in just two weeks, I couldn't put them down! Cat on a Hycanith Hunt was one of my favorites in the series. If you're looking for a good read, these are definitly it!
Midnight Louie is back-fresh and charming as usual.......1998-06-13
Midnight Louie is upset because he suddenly has stiff competition for the affections of his human pet, Las Vegas publicist Temple Barr. To Louie's dismay, Temple has resumed her romantic relationship with master magician Max Kinsella, who lives in a James Bond-like world. Louie has no intention of sharing his "doll with anyone"; but Temple does not notice his displeasure.
Accompanied by his offspring, Midnight Louise, Louie returns to his former home, the Oasis Hotel, for a bit of rest and relaxation. However, the feline discovers the body of the odious Effinger, whose corpse is wrapped like a mummy.Effinger is the heavy-handed stepfather of Matt Devine, a former priest and questionable third wheel in the Barr-Kinsella romance. Only a few days ago, Effinger beat up Temple as a warning to his stepson to stay out of his life. However the death of the mean spirited person does not end the danger to Louie and his associates, especially Temple and her two male companions. It is only the opening gambit.
CAT ON A HYACINTH HUNT is the ninth entry in the Midnight Louie cat series and surprisingly the book retains the fresh and exciting perspective of its forerunners. The mystery remains first rate while the romantic triangle (or is that rectangle with Louie being the other corner) has become more complex and interesting. The brilliantly talented Carole Nelson Douglas has set in motion story line twists leading the series in a new direction that is sure to surprise yet please Louie's biggest fans.
