I love riding on my Polaris. It is the perfect means of transportation from my summer home in Maine to the winter home in Vermont and even back to the estate in Connecticut. This book helps me keep my baby tip-top. With my modifications I have been able to reach speeds in excess of 190 mph. Well maybe not 190 mph per se. Regardless, the babes love it. I've got them drinkin water like it's goin out of style, if you know what I mean.

Sixty years later, prominent antiquities dealer Alex Benedict is determined to find the truth about Polaris-no matter how far he must travel across the stars, no matter the risk."

Less filling.......2007-07-09
Polaris follows the storyline previously established in McDevitt's A Talent for War, featuring Alex Benedict, an antiquities dealer and his assistant, Chase Kolpath. Polaris was an expeditionary spaceflight occurring some 40 or so years prior to the plot of this book. The Polaris contained an illuminated group of clientele who were taking part in the spaceflight to view a very rare interstellar event and they disappeared. The mysterious vanishment was never solved and many theories have cropped up in the years following.
At the outset of this novel it is the anniversary of the Polaris journey and there is to be a display and auction of Polaris artifacts. However, someone or something seems determined to destroy anything related to the expedition.
The story is told from the point of view of Alex' attractive and intelligent assistant, Chase. The author's style is very conversational and matter of fact. Chase's character is somewhat sarcastic and the internal and external dialogue is anything if not breezy and even humorous at times. Alex's character seems to be the true protagonist of the story, but since the story is not written from his point of view, we only get descriptions of his actions and words. This is a little disappointing because I felt that Alex was the most interesting character.
The book has its moments, with the story behind the Polaris revealing some intriguing plot twists, but it is not enough to overcome an essentially weak narrative. Much of the time is spent with the main characters going from place to place to talk to various people about the Polaris and what they knew, while nefarious and enigmatic characters engage in trying to waylay them. The technology was fairly standard sci fi fare, with nothing very creative.
The ending was derivative of any mystery/thriller, and was ultimately satisfying, yet calorie free. I think that McDevitt has something here with these characters, but this book could have used some work.
McDevitt is Solid Again.......2007-07-09
A Jack McDevitt novel is my sci-fi equivalent of comfort food: nothing too exotic or challenging, just a clean, well-executed story that I know I'm going to enjoy. And "Polaris" is just what I ordered.
The story centers around Alex Benedict and Chase Kolpath, two antiquities dealers / investigators / adventurers whom McDevitt introduced in "A Talent for War." Unlike "Talent," the story is told from Chase's point of view. She is a strong, likable character in the [...]-kicking female space-pilot vein (is there any other kind?). Alex is an antiquities expert, the smooth-talking man with the money. In the course of business, they acquire some artifacts from the Polaris, a ship whose crew vanished mysteriously, Bermuda Triangle style, over 70 years before. They soon discover that someone else is after the artifacts, and they aren't afraid to use deadly force to get them. The two set off to find their assailant, and become drawn into the tangled mystery of the Polaris' disappearance.
The book is basically a mystery set in a space-faring future. There is not as much action as in other McDevitt books I've read. Except for dodging assassination attempts, Chase and Alex spend most of their time looking through archives and interviewing people. I did enjoy the mystery, however, and the eventual resolution was clever. With about 100 pages to go, it became fairly obvious *what* had happened on the Polaris, but *how* it occurred wasn't clear until the end.
McDevitt is a master of fleshing out his worlds with a wealth of cultural detail. There are countless passing references to books, actors, historical events, brand names, and so on - not in a heavy-handed "This Is the Future!" way, but in a natural, conversational context. It makes the reader feel at home in a world millenia in the future, and lends realism and credibility to the story.
Is "Polaris" Nebula caliber? No. Does it sear itself into your memory? No. But it is a good, solid, enjoyable read.
One of his best!.......2007-06-27
Jack McDevitt seems to be a hit or miss writer. Eternity Road was not a very good one, but Polaris is a great book. An all around great whodunnit space mystery!
Great sci-fi mystery!.......2007-03-04
I greatly enjoyed this novel. I read somewhere that Jack McDevitt is the next Isaac Asimov - that may be going too far, but he's the only author I've seen get close to Asimov's ability to utilize heavy science fiction, engage the reader, keep the action moving, and create a totally intriguing mystery. This book definitely made me want to read some others by McDevitt.
As far as the book itself goes, I do highly recommend it to any sci-fi fans out there. If you're not into sci-fi, but are curious, I'd suggest you grab this book. I will say the premise kept me guessing for the most part, but I had pretty much figured it out by the time McDevitt clued his main characters in on what had happened. The twists at the end were not so surprising as I think they were intended to be.
I would definitely recommend this to any sci-fi fan, it has a great plot, awesome characters, very solid science, and an intriguing universe set up in it.
I Am In Love With Chase!.......2007-01-27
Chase is the coolest woman! She is strong, intelligent and rates right up there with Priscilla and the main character of Jack's Infinity Beach as far as strong female characters. This is quite an enjoyable book. Jack has an easy-going style which enables one to glide through his books. This is every bit as good as Talent For War.

Part biography, part document of spiritual wisdom, Forest of Visions is a fascinating story that satisfies on many levels. Author Alex Polari de Alverga spent years as a political prisoner during military rule in Brazil. Here he recounts his spiritual transformation after release under the tutelage of Padrinho Sebastião Mota de Mela, one of the founders of the Santo Daime religion. Forest of Visions is also a study of the inner workings of the Santo Daime utopian community of 500 in the heart of the Amazonian rainforest. The Santo Daime is a Christian-indigenous syncretic religion that centers around the drinking of a sacramental psychedelic tea called Ayahuasca as a shortcut to spiritual revelation and growth. After years of study, the Brazilian government decided that Ayahuasca positively benefited society and church members, and declared it legal. Approximately 50 Santo Daime churches now exist around the world, including in the U.S., Japan, and Holland, with various legal statures. The forward by Stephen Larsen, author of The Shaman's Doorway, and the preface by Jonathan Goldman provide an informative transition from our world to the realm of this mysterious and unique Amazonian cult. --P. Randall Cohan
Book Description
The story of Santo Daime--a new religion that blends elements of Christianity with older Amazonian indigenous spiritual practices--and the ecologically sound and spiritually centered utopian community it has inspired
• A true story of a classical spiritual encounter, as well as an intimate account of the genesis of an important religious tradition that continues to grow worldwide
• Edited and Introduced by Stephen Larsen, author of The Shaman's Doorway
Alex Polari de Alverga spent years as a political prisoner during the rule of the military junta in Brazil, enduring torture, brutality, and deprivation. On his release from captivity and in search of something to restore his spiritual connection to life, he had a transformative encounter with one of the two revered founders of Santo Daime, Padrinho Sebastiao Mota de Mela. Santo Daime--an Amazonian religion, born out of jungle entheogens, mediumship, and healing, that is a potent and unique synthesis of Christianity and indigenous practices--provided Alverga with an alternative to his disillusionment with modern society. His quest for spiritual initiation eventually led him deep into the heart of the rainforest to Mapia, one of the spiritual centers of Santo Daime, where he became a teacher and leader of the Daime community.
Forest of Visions is a story of a classic spiritual encounter comparable to the Tibetan Saint Milarepa's search for his teacher Marpa. It is also an intimate account of the genesis of an important religious tradition that from modest beginnings in Brazil has now spread throughout the world and continues to grow. It provides an inside look at the spiritually centered village of Mapia, a model for communities in the 21st century.

Insightful.......2007-05-09
Alex Polari has a very special capacity of writing and bringing to life this beautifull story of such an important person, Padrinho Sebastiao.
This book gives an indepth view of the padrinho's life and of the Santo Daime doctrine.
Very inspiring
disappointing.......2000-05-04
I really wanted to find out about the Santo Daime movement, and while this book has a lot of information, there is just way too much of the very mental ramblings of the author. While in many books this is a good thing, here it is a real distraction.
The only worthwhile book on Santo Daime in English.......1999-07-19
There is much on the internet about Santo Daime, almost none of which accurately portrays the church or the religious and spiritual significance of the Daime. This book, however, is a deep discussion of the church, the doctrine and the Daime which offers a clear picture from a man who has traveled far on the spiritual path of the Santo Daime. Interested people, please read this book before reading anything else.

How does one translate "Trite"?.......2007-08-30
If you pick the book up in the bookstore (as I did) and read the first few pages, you might think that this book holds the promise of a good piece of literary fiction. If you take it home and read it, you're bound to feel cheated out of time that you could have spent reading something of merit. There are passages that made me think the novel would ultimately redeem itself. In reality, I should have stopped when the main character goes to her sister's school where she teaches, and nobody knows she's absent. I have news for you--if a teacher were absent, she would not be able to cover up a daily absence by asking a colleague to cover for her. The novel only gets worse after that: The dialogue comes straight out of a bad television script; the third person narrator breaks in with endless questions that reminded me of a Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew style of creating suspense. The ending is just moronic.
Maybe the writer will find herself, but she certainly lost me on this effort. Boo. Boo. Shame on FSG for publishing this. Boo. Boo.
An amazing book.......2005-03-05
I had been searching for quite a while for a good book to read, and came across this. I had remembered a few praiseworthy reviews, so I picked it up.
Could not put it down if my life depended on it. I'm recommending it to just about everyone I know.
Huge Picture of Author on Hardcover Edition!.......2004-03-19
What is up with the huge picture of herself on the back of the hardcover edition? Most authors have a one inch by one inch photo. I wonder if this huge photo was her idea...or someone was trying to sell the book on her looks? If it was her idea, that says alot about the author.
P.S. I agree with the comment about the book contract. There are way better K-A authors out there. Mostly men.
Readable with Perseverance.......2003-11-28
Suggest checking the NY Times book archives for a fair review. This is a first attempt for the author, and should be accepted and appreciated for the 50th percentile effort that it is. There are really two Korean-American stories here, one of depression and one a detective mystery, and they don't fit together very well. Speaking to the first, the reader has to decide roughly 70-80 pages in, when the novelty of the author's descriptions is starting to wear thin and become boring, whether to proceed. Kim is no Phillip Roth. I did continue, on hope that ethnic/cultural insights might make up for it. Can't say I felt sufficiently rewarded. As for the second, the mystery, it's not well constructed or particularly plausibly handled, i.e., it's more implanted than integrated with the first. To make matters worse, the last page of the book, the ultimate act of the mystery, makes no sense whatsoever relative to everything that's come before. In fact, I would call having the main character turn and solidarize with her parents, in spite of their long-term heinous social behavior toward other Koreans, an act of gross moral cowardice on the author's part (me-generation stuff?). A truly insightful and heroic effort would have had the daughter facing and living with, or being torn apart by, the ambiguity of these two poles. As it is, I wonder, had the daughter been Jewish and her parents pulled acted against other Jews in collaboration with the Nazi authorities, whether the JewishBooks and other reviewers here on amazon would have written so glowingly of this book.
There's a character in the book, a mostly absent gay roommate named Caleb, who's a throwaway, i.e., without useful purpose to the story. Ironically enough, however, he's the one given the two best lines by the author (284,286): "I'm so bored with blasphemy," and "You can only drive yourself crazy if you have no distance from the world." Not earth shattering insights either, but ones the author might do well to contemplate, especially if she wants to become more than a teller of morally empty depressed women's tales.
ambitious... but doesn't pull it off.......2003-06-12
I really wanted to like this book, as I am a Korean-American who aspires to write. But I completely agree with the reviewer of "Some promise, but ultimately boring..." The plot is sloppy and repetitive--I don't need to be told multiple times about how many times Suzy moved in her life. And I realize the author is trying to show how Suzy is damaged from all the pain she's gone through in her life, but her impulsive actions just make her seem pretentious. And when the "mystery" was revealed, I thought it was borderline silly! The aspects of Korean-American immigrant life were insightful, but to the point that I left like I was reading a textbook--a little too educational. Maybe to a non-Korean, these descriptions might seem interesting--but I felt the author was trying too hard to be tourguide of Korean immigrant life in the US.
Incidentally, I know this writer is talented because I read an angaging, non-fiction account of her trip to North Korea in the NY Times. This leads me to believe that she just needs to work out some of her first author glitches. I'd be willing to give her a second chance.

Book Description
Dominique is a simultaneous interpreter, professionally bound to confidentiality. When she overhears at a pharmaceutical conference that a researcher is under pressure to postpone a revolutionary HIV treatment, she is thrown into a devastating predicament. She cannot disclose the information, but withholding it could hamper the recovery prospects of a close friend dying of AIDS. Unaware of the researcher's identity, she falls in love with him, a charming and handsome Italian doctor facing his own moral dilemma. Her story takes a dramatic turn and races to an unexpected conclusion. The Interpreter combines a memorable voice, a gift for narrative, and a powerful love story in an atmosphere of international intrigue.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating subject!.......2006-04-09
I've never thought much about interpreters before but was captivated by the subject in this book. I have no way of knowing whether it was an accurate account of the career but it certainly was believable. The characters were fully evolved, loveable, fallible and richly depicted. The powerful love stories were wrenching and deftly interwoven with dry medical conferences, HIV research, and the job requirements of interpreters. Don't miss this gem of a book!
A classic love story lacking substance.......2005-05-12
I was first drawn to this book after hearing about the movie of the same name. However, I must admit that I found the movie, despite its satisfactory reviews, to much better than the book.
The Interpreter takes place with the polyglot interpreter, Dominique Green, overhearing a conversation after hours in her booth about a new medical discovery. This discovery, if legitimate, would revolutionize the medical world in terms of a cure for AIDS. After hearing this, Dominique is plagued by feelings of ambivalence: should she stay quiet and respect the code of confidentiality all interpreters are bound to, or should she spill what she's just heard and save the millions suffering in the world from AIDS (including her close friend, Mischa)?
However, the above situation is really not addressed until the end of the book, and the Interpreter (the book) is more or less a full-blown love story rather than the high-powered-suspense thriller that the recent movie portrays.
I found the prose that Ms. Glass utilized in the Interpreter to be very moving. Its elegance and grandeur literally pushed itself of the page and into my eyes-so much so that I found myself re-reading many passages because they were so pleasing in terms of literature. At the same time, however, I found some phrases to be so inundated with words that it made reading over them a chore, and I found myself realizing that first-time authors feel that they need to impress readers with verbosity.
The book itself was far too long; I feel that many of the situations were too dragged out, and littered with long strings of empty passages bulleted ridden with big words in the form of sentences.
In the end, the Interpreter, while making a great debut novel, was lacking something. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it definitely left me with many questions (questions I will not address, as they are spoilers).
If you like love stories, then go for this one.
If you like suspense thrillers, then don't go for this one, because it is just a love story that uses as its second story.
made an excellent movie!.......2005-04-21
enjoyed the book immensely, and very happy to see it's been made into a movie --(sean penn/nicole kidman). restores my faith in Hollywood...seems that in this case, credit has been given where credit is deserved!
Interesting, a pretty easy read.......2005-01-31
I picked up this book because I am a professional interpreter of 8 years and was curious about how the title character was portrayed. I thought the descriptive passages about both interpreting and medical research (which I've also worked in) were pretty accurate and provided good insights for anyone who is interested in these fields. I agree with other reviewers that the love story was not really the point for me. The novel is somewhat slow-paced, don't expect John Grisham-type suspense.
AWESOME!!!.......2004-10-06
Moving! Magical! Fascinating!
Ms. Glass has won the reader!!
A MUST BUY and must read for those who savor the English Language. A story that keeps you on the edge of your bed...and characters that make you wish the book would never end...
I can't wait her next novel.
THIS ONE IS PURE ENJOYMENT!

Set in the reign of Marcus Aurelius and inspired by the Antonine ambassadorial mission to China, it has all the elements of hero and antagonist, encounters with spies, assassins and pirates, incredible feats of bravery and survival, an exotic environment, and what else, love stories. The emperor sends the senator Lucius Curtius Rufus - in desperate need of money - on a trade mission to China and forces him to take as interpreter the Parthian noble Arsaces, whom fate has brought as a slave to the imperial court and who has a clandestine mission from Marcus Aurelius to the Chinese emperor. Accompanied by a cohort of soldiers, they set off to an uncertain fate, and after many adventures and much loss of life indeed arrive in China and to further troubles.
The story is told from the hereafter by its various characters, which gives it a nice structure, and slowly escalates to its climax and the eventual fate of the protagonists. Despite the "fantasy," it has a lot of realistic elements. Since the author, like so many others in today's bottom-line publishing climate, obviously could not find a publisher other than one of the new self-publishing companies, the lack of an editor is apparent.
Nonetheless, it kept my interest going and I thought it a good read.
