Emily Graham knows what it's like to have enemies. The pretty New York attorney--a millionaire due to a lucky stock market break--has been sued by her greedy ex-husband and stalked by a man who thinks she helped his mother's murderer escape punishment. But when she buys her great-great-grandmother's childhood home in the sleepy resort town of Spring Lake, Emily thinks her new life will be saner, even though five other young women, including Emily's ancestor Madeline Shapley, have disappeared from Spring Lake under creepy circumstances over the past century.

No sooner has Emily moved in than she starts receiving frightening, anonymous messages. Worse, when she breaks ground for a backyard pool, the backhoe brings up the body of Martha Lawrence, who vanished four years ago, and whose dead hand clutches the finger bone of Madeline Shapley, identified by her sapphire ring. Both women disappeared on September 7, 105 years apart. When the cops and Emily realize that a similar parallel exists between two other missing women and that the anniversary of yet another girl's disappearance is fast approaching, they quickly surmise that a sixth murder will be attempted in just a week. But by whom? Is today's serial killer a copycat of the Spring Lake murderer of the 1890s--or a reincarnation? Fueled by fear, anger, and scary little notes from the killer, Emily's actively researching the murders, but even she doesn't realize how many suspects there are: the retired college president, who's being blackmailed, and his perpetually angry wife; the town's bankrupt restaurateur with a weakness for pretty blondes; the middle-aged detective with his finger right on the pulse of the crimes. Even Emily's friend Eric, the software CEO who made her rich, and Nick, her new coworker, seem to show up at suspiciously convenient times.

Mary Higgins Clark's cast of characters may be overly large; in going for quantity she skimps on the characterization, and all of them, including Emily, are as wooden as Al Gore. But characterization isn't what's made this 24-book author a bestseller-list regular. The cleverly complex plot gallops along at a great clip, the little background details are au courant, and the identities of both murderers come as an enjoyable surprise. On the Street Where You Live just may be Clark's best in years. --Barrie Trinkle

Mary Higgins Clark, America's #1 bestselling author of suspense, always excels in exploring the quirks and twists of the human psyche, and in this new thriller she takes a journey into the uncharted territory of the criminal mind. Anxious to relocate after an acrimonious divorce, Emily Graham decides to buy her great-grandmother's childhood home -- an old Victorian house in the New Jersey seaside resort town of Spring Lake. The family had sold the house in 1892, after one of Emily's great-aunts, then still a young girl, disappeared. Now, more than a century later, as the house is being renovated and the backyard excavated for a pool, the body is found. But as one mystery is solved another begins, for next to those skeletal remains lies another body -- that of eighteen-year-old Martha Lawrence, who disappeared from her Spring Lake home only nine years ago. It soon becomes apparent that by trying to reclaim some part of her family's past, Emily has stumbled upon secrets that will threaten a devious and seductive killer. She will soon learn that he has chosen her as his next victim.

5 out of 5 stars "Reflections Of A Girlhood?".......2007-09-01

This is the first Mary Higgins Clark novel I have read, but it won't be the last. This is a very worthy page turner, with many secrets, subplots, richly described characters, & numerous murder suspects. There is a realistic, & highly detailed quality to the authors writing that is very refreshing. Feisty defense attorney Emily Graham's new home in Spring Lake, New Jersey was once owned by her family one hundred years earlier. Soon after moving in a dead body of a girl who had gone missing four years earlier is found in her back yard while she was having a pool put in. The body is found with the finger of an even earlier murder victim complete with a Sapphire ring. As if that was not ominous enough, she also finds that she is being stalked again. Could it be some one from her past, or a new menace? The dead start to pile up, as Emily is hell bent on solving the link between the present murders with those committed a century earlier. Some of the locals even think a reincarnated serial killer is on the prowl? The most fascinating aspect of this novel is that the author takes us DEEP into the mind of the killer, without revealing his/her identity. The overarching question that slowly grows to a crescendo is who is this obsessed psychopath? Is it Will Stafford, the real estate agent, Gary White, her greedy ex-husband, Eric bailey, the timid but shrewd owner of a dot-com company whose stock helped Emily amass a fortune? could it be Ned Koehler, a man convicted of stalking Emily when she lived in Albany, or Bob Frieze, the cranky restaurant owner prone to unexplainable blackouts when he can't remember anything? Perhaps, it is Nick Todd, the defense attorney fed up with getting guilty clients off? Maybe, it is a woman? Could it be the elderly & supremely bitter Rachel lashing out at young girls for her husbands indescretions decades earlier, or a jealous secretary of an eccentric College professor? I won't tell you the shocking ending, read it for yourself. You won't be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars A wonderful story, but a bit confusing.......2007-08-01

This book is a great read for the beach as long as you have a pad and pencil with you to keep track of the characters. Other than that small problem it was a wonderful story and it will hold few surprises if you are a fan of Ms. Clark. Again, there is a single, career oriented female who must take on a series of baffling events. Her life is threatened and there are plenty of suspects. The characters were poorly developed and there were many loose ends. Overall, it wasn't a terrible read, but I didn't think it was up to Ms.Clarks writing abilities.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Job by Mary Higgins Clark.......2007-06-26

Mary Higgins Clark is one of my favorite mystery writers. This is one of the best that she has written in a long time. It has great characters, a plot that makes for a real page turner and is a mystery that was not predictable.

5 out of 5 stars Mary Higgins Clark On the Street Where You Live.......2007-05-15

Mary Higgins Clark is a wonderful mystery writer. You will not be disappointed with this book or any other of her many mystery novels. She keeps you in suspense right to the end. When you think you have it figured out, you don't.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent mystery.......2007-04-14

This murder mystery has everything you need for a good suspenseful story. You have intelligent successful young women, a beautiful romantic setting and a mis-guided psychopath.

A hundred years ago, in a small tourist town on the shore, three young women disappeared without a trace. Now it's happening again. As they find each woman, they also find a clue to the disappearances a century ago.

Book Description

From the architectural landmarks of Cathedral Hill to the tranquil charm of Lake Phalen, St. Paul possesses a long, colorful history that its residents celebrate with an almost cultish fervor. Each neighborhood offers a glimpse into the city’s roots and every street tells a story. Combining rigorous research with a feisty wit, Donald L. Empson has written an entertaining history of St. Paul’s place names. Here people throughout the city can discover the often-quirky origins of every place name—from A Street to Zimmerman Place. Who knew that Payne Avenue was named after Rice W. Payne, whose property was confiscated after he fought in the Civil War as a Confederate major? Or that Lexington Parkway was named after the first battle of the Revolutionary War because the developer’s wife felt the neighboring streets sounded too British? With more than one thousand entries and over one hundred photographs, The Street Where You Live is the most complete inventory of public spaces in St. Paul in existence. At long last this new edition—the first update since 1975—has been revised and expanded to include neighborhoods, parks, lakes, streams, islands, bridges, cemeteries, caves, and other landmarks, as well as streets and avenues. Learn the perfect trivial tidbit for cocktail parties, find destinations for Sunday drives, and get to know the city from pavement to park—in The Street Where You Live, St. Paul’s secrets are revealed. Donald L. Empson is a local historian based in Stillwater, Minnesota. Don Boxmeyer wrote for the St. Paul Dispatch and St. Paul Pioneer Press for more than three and a half decades. He is the author of A Knack for Knowing Things: Stories from St. Paul Neighborhoods and Beyond.

5 out of 5 stars Great Local History.......2007-01-10

I've enjoyed this book because it's given me a lot of interesting history regarding the area where I live. St Paul is an interesting place to live with a lot of history and this book does a great job describing it. I recommend the book.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-10-21

As I lived in St. Paul for over 20 years, I found the book very interesting and informative. I first read about familar streets and then found myself reading the book front to back. The pictures also really helped bring the story of each street to life. Every city should do all it can to promote it's history; the street names and stories behind them is a great place to start.

3 out of 5 stars lots of common sense.......2004-03-15

After reading about this book in a Better Homes & Gardens article, I immediately ordered it from the Empowerment Institute, paying (I'm sad to say) 20 bucks plus shipping. I thought it might provide some innovative ideas on how communities can deal with crime, juvenile problems, and general quality of life issues. And it does have an interesting tip or two.

However, most of the information is just basic common sense. Pick up litter, call the police if you see drug dealers, plant a community garden - those are some of the earth-shattering ideas contained within. And they're not even discussed in depth.

If you live in a neighborhood that's basically problem-free and you're just looking for some nice neighborly activities, this book is for you. But if your community is struggling with more serious issues, don't waste your time. Do a seach for "community development" and choose one of those books instead.

The Depression's winter gloom has crept into the summerhouse of the Hancock Shaker Village in Massachusetts. The dead body of a woman "of dubious reputation" -- a lost soul befriended by many of the brothers and sisters -- sits at a table in an evening gown, snow swirling around her frozen ankles, her lifeless arms stretched out before her. A frantic call goes out to Kentucky, begging Eldress Rose Callahan to brave the February cold and come East, where her keen eye and peerless deductive powers are needed to help lift a terrible weight from the bereft and dwindling community of Believers. But Sister Rose's arrival is greeted with local suspicion and spreading terror when murder once again scars the gentle village. And as the fury of winter further isolates the small village from its suspicious neighbors, Sister rose and her dear friend Gennie Malone must race to unmask a killer who may be mad enough to keep killing throughout this frigid season of dying.

5 out of 5 stars An intriguingly fresh mystery.......2001-02-01

At the height of their ascendancy, the Shakers were a large religious sect with communities all over the country. The Shakers were not only celibate, but also insulated themselves from the rest of society. As time moved on, the members died and no new converts joined the movement. By the Great Depression, the membership was so small, the sect hired outsiders to farm the land and manage the stores.

Eldress Rose Callahan receives a request to travel from her home, the North Homage Shaker Village, Kentucky to Hancock Shaker Village, Massachusetts to investigate a homicide. Once Rose, accompanied by her friend Gennie Moline, arrive, they immediately feel the taint of evil. Strange happenings and outbursts from people who have not signed the Convent provide the detecting duo with a plethora of suspects. When another murder occurs, Rose increases her search only to place herself and Gennie in danger.

Deborah Woodworth does a fantastic job of explaining the Shaker religious and philosophical beliefs, and their efforts to survive the dwindling population during the 1930s. The only remnant of this once powerful movement is their hand carved furniture. Within that backdrop interwoven into the plot lies a mystery with many suspects having motives and opportunities. This leaves the reader wondering just who the killer is and that answer occurs when the heroine provides it. The who-done-it of KILLING GIFTS is well orchestrated as with the previous books in this strong historical mystery series, but the gift in this tale and its predecessors is the warm detailed glimpse of a fascinating bygone culture.

1 out of 5 stars Slow Paced Murder Plot.......2006-06-04

I didn't get into this story at all. First time reading this author's work and also my last time! I felt very detached from the beginning as the murder plot took no surprising twists & turns, no gasps, no red herrings. April Woo, the Chinese detective, seems too distracted from her real case, that is, to solve who murdered her boss and also a second murder.

She keeps worrying why she could not defend herself & almost became a murder victim herself. She seems to go on a merry go round with her investigations with no sense of emotion attached to her case. There were times when I skipped paragraphs that seem too irrelevant to me.

The stereotype on Chinese families is carried to the extreme here! I just want to give this author a whack on the head!!! Oh, come on, I've seen Chinese families in action, they speak much softer than most races and they are civil minded. Skinny Dragon, April Woo's mother, is a terrible caricature of the Chinese. I dread to think of what readers will go away thinking of the Chinese if you keep reading her series.

5 out of 5 stars April Woo is again fantastic........2004-01-18

The latest April Woo mystery (2003). This one is one of the best ones yet. Sanchez is soon to be Captain and Woo will soon sit for her Lt. Test. This story will test the bounds of the rules when April starts to investigate some things on her own.

Lt. Bernardino is mysteriously killed at the end of his retirement party. At the same time April is attacked by the killer. The killer almost succeeds in killing April but in the end is interrupted and just damages her neck and voice. This of course sends "Skinny Dragon Mother" into hysterics and makes her cook up some of those scary smelly recipes to help with the Yin and Yang.

As usual Glass has made fantastic characters that draw you into the story and want to help figure out who did it. I love how she infuses the story with April's culture but also takes into account the feelings of people. You are able to see how in real life situations you have to follow up on all of the leads.

Another winner from Glass. I can hardly wait for the next one.

                4 out of 5 stars Murder Mystery.......2003-11-18

A killing Gift is a mystery. It had a lot of twist and turns to it. A lieutenant after 38 years on the police force was murdered. What was good about the book was I never knew who killed this man. So if you are into intrigue it's interesting. Sometimes I didn't like the story because I couldn't figure out who was the killer. I didn't like Lieutenant Bernandino's son Bill. He acted like a complete idiot. When the killers were finally caught, the motive for the killing was so off balance, I'm still confused on why they killed him.

5 out of 5 stars April Woo almost dies going after her mentor's killer.......2003-11-04

April Woo, NYPD detective, and her fiancé, NYPD Lieutenant Mike Sanchez, were attending the retirement party for Lieutenant Alfredo Bernardino. He had been April's boss and mentor.

When Bernardino left the party without his retirement gifts, April rushed after him to take them to him. What she found was him dead. She took off her shoes and rushed out in the dark to find the killer and was almost killed herself.

Jack Devereaux and his dog helped save April. She fears he may be in danger if the killer thinks he was seen.

Mike is assigned the case. April begins investigating when she is supposed to be recuperating. Finally Mike tries to let her help.

The killer used martial arts skills. April had not been able to attempt using hers. He had taken her by surprise and was very powerful.

Then a second victim is struck down in the same place in a similar fashion. Birdie Bassett had inherited her husband's fortune against his children's wishes. They didn't like Birdie and had planned to fight the will.

Bernardino's wife had died a month ago, shortly after winning the lottery. Could there be a connection?

Some of Bernardino's money is missing so they investigate his children, DA Bill Bernardino and FBI agent Kathy Bernardino. They also look into his known friends and contacts.

I like April Woo. She is a fun character with a mother that is a hoot. She is warm and caring but also a cop.

The setting of New York is always an enjoyable setting. These crimes are very believable in this setting.

The friction between Mike and April adds to the story and helps us get to know them as a couple, not just individuals.

This was a new series to me and I am happy I have gotten to know April Woo. I look forward to reading the next book. I highly recommend this book.

                2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2003-08-08

April Woo plans a retirement party for her former boss. Unfortunately, he ended up getting murdered on his way home from the party. Her former boss had suddenly come into some big money. Other wealthy people die. April investigates, links up the murders and solves the crimes to everyone satisfaction.

The strength of the April Woo series has always been the compelling cast of characters Leslie Glass employs. April Woo, a smart police detective who becomes meek and subservient in the presence of her Chinese mother, Skinny Dragon. April's mother has to be one the most terrifying mothers on the planet and their scenes together are always funny. Mike Sanchez, the Mexican detective and partner to April in more ways than one. Past April Woo books have been rife with culture clashes with a comedic turn. They have been highly enjoyable books. There is something missing in this one. Besides the primary cast, I felt no connection to any of the characters. The story felt disjointed and chaotic. At the end, I was just glad the book was over.

5 out of 5 stars You had better hope Jennifer never wishes you were dead.........2004-09-04

When on honeymoon in 1928, Tom and Kate List are in a motor car accident that leaves Kate with a broken hip. Not knowing she was already pregnant, she receives a turn-of-the-century x-ray during treatment. Nine months later, her daughter Jennifer is born.

Jennifer is different from all the other children, in an indefinable way. The only person who does not feel any discomfort in her presence is her own mother. Even Tom has an aversion to his daughter.

`The Killing Gift' is a story of Jennifer's achingly lonely life, alone as she grew up and alone as a young college woman and even alone after her eventual marriage. Starting with an incident of a broken vase when she was but a child, strange things happen around Jennifer when she is upset or cornered.

Her only friend is Ellen Compton, a beauty who is so self centered she has no room to fear what Jennifer is; and her husband Dr. William Gilbert is a kind and quiet man who does not notice much around him. Even in the presence of the only two people who have ever tolerated her, Jennifer is alone.

The book skips around from Jennifer's past to her present, when maniac killer Amos Roberts is found dead in the Gilbert's apartment. Assigned to the case is Captain David Stavitsky, a homicide cop obsessed with a case folder of criminals who escaped prosecution. Amos Roberts was one of his obsessions, until now.

Stavitsky digs into the death of Roberts with tenacity, uncovering Jennifer's past and trying to solve the mystery around the woman.

Absolutely perfect read for lovers of detective novels or horror novels, very fast and compelling storyline with enough shivers in it to leave a satisfying, tingling taste in your mouth. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly complex and thought provoking.......2003-04-12

When I picked this up, I thought it would just be a horror book. The story of Dr. Jennifer List Gilbert, a very ordinary and lonely woman whose extraordinary and unwanted "gift" repulses all the other people in her life. It begins with a sociopathic intruder to the Gilbert home dying an inexplicable and painful death during a home invasion robbery. The story of the police officer trying to get to the bottom of the mysterious death is interwoven with the strange and sad life story of Dr. Gilbert. Scary, suspenseful, tragic - I've read this book so many times I've worn out my copy and need a new one! Definitely recommend.

This is a story about a woman who is a recluse. Attacked by an armed man, the main character kills him by wishing him dead. The homicide detective who investigates the crime becomes enthralled with this woman and her killing gift. Excellent suspense story, more suspense than horror. It's a Putnam Award Novel. definitely worth a look.
