4 out of 5 stars A great read.......2007-08-19

Laura suffered a accident five years prior and as a result, she now has a form of brain damage called aphasia. She can live a pretty normal life, just has a hard time counting and saying 3 word syllables. She comes to work for Isaiah,a veterinarian and a real sweeet guy who has no interest of a relationship for a couple of years yet. As they spend time together, they start falling in love with each other slowly but each deny it. Overall the story was great and there is an underlying mystery that is easy to see who the assailant is (why I gave it a 4), but it was a sweet story. The love scenes were great and I loved that she took the time to develop their relationship and it wasnt at all forced. The only real downside is that it dragged on at times and that Laura sometimes seemed a little too nice. This was my first Coutier family read and I felt lost at times, like I should know some of the other characters, so I recommend that you do not start with this one. I am going back and start the stories at the beginning.

4 out of 5 stars Not Catherine's best...but still very good,.......2006-11-05

I am a Catherine Anderson fan, and I just recently started reading Catherine Anderson's contemporary romances (I love historical romances, never really was into modern romances, but Catherine's great writing "Keegan's lady", "Annie's Song", "Summer breeze", encouraged me to check out her contemporary love stories).

I must say that while I like this book, it is definitely not Catherine's best. The premise of the story is unique, and the storyline had so much promise, but the book was very slow the first 200+ pages. And there was so much concentration of vet work. I mean sure, healing animals is important, but the way Isaiah's work was portrayed, it was blown out of proportion.

This book could have been shortened by at least a hundred pages. And the fact that it takes Isaiah so long to realize that he loves Laura (it happens somewhere at 300+ pages), sort of paralyzed the storyline. Had the story been shortened by at least a hundred pages, and had the romance started earlier, at least somewhere before 300+ pages, this would have been a great story.

Nonetheless this is a good and enjoyable read, the last hundred pages are wonderful, and five star worthy.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite book of 2005.......2006-09-05

Last year I polled all my reading friends in November and had them email me the name of their favorite book for the year and their comments. I printed them all out and sent them with my Christmas cards to all my avid reader friends. They all loved the idea. When it came time to choose mine, I picked this one. I read it once and then a couple of months later read it again. I don't read weighty books, I read for light entertainment and so I don't ask a lot of a book. There have been some real disappointments even with my relaxed standards! And there have been some that I have really enjoyed, but this one stood out over all that I had gone through in 2005, probably close to 300 books.

I have enjoyed all of Ms. Anderson's books, some more than others, but all were worth the read, and this brothers series has been totally enjoyable. I am sure that critics are right that there are probably MORE obstacles than are presented, but this is fiction and I know that not every heroine in real life is drop dead gorgeous and not every dream man is perfect like these guys, I know I am not reading about real life and enjoy the fantasy. Why can't this also be a world where handicapped is not as hard as in real life? I think the idea of addressing it and giving people an opportunity to think about it spreads a little more compassion and understanding than we have right now. Every time I write a review after reading the nay sayers who have written before me I just want to point out its fiction!!! Perhaps these people who find these books wanting ought to begin shopping in higher literary planes and leave the simple stuff to us more simple readers???

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Illustrations.......2007-06-27

This is a gorgeous book, with John Denver's lyrics, and beautiful summery illustrations. My daughter has the paperback version and we love it so much that we have been buying the hardcover version as a new baby gift. The book features a brown-skinned little girl - hard to find - and a brown-skinned daddy - even harder to find - swinging, floating on a boat, and playing a guitar! This is a terrific publisher who deserves our support for their commitment to quality children's literature.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully done!.......2007-06-26

This John Denver song, turned into a book illustrated by Christopher Canyon is wonderful. Absolutely beautiful illustrations. One you can sing/read over and over. Very well done. Can't wait for "Grandma's Feather Bed". Dolphin Lullaby and Take Me Home Country Roads are both worth purchasing also. My kindergarten class loves it as well as my children at home.

Christopher Canyon was at our school in London, OH, and he showed how he illustrated the book. It is a great book and with the CD it is wonderful. Especially if you like John Denver

5 out of 5 stars I fell in love with John Denver's music all over again!.......2007-01-26

John Denver's sweet, endearing lyrics just wash over you. And coupled with Christopher Canyon's awesome illustrations make this a very worthwhile purchase. Every kid I've read/sung it to absolutely adores it. Because it can be sung, it is easily memorized. With that comes word recognition as almost all the kids begin knowing which word is which on a few of the pages. WONDERFUL! This book makes you want to appreciate nature and family and helps you remember that the very best things in life really are free.

5 out of 5 stars Sunshine on my shoulder makes me happy............2006-11-10

I love this book. The lyrics by john Denver are wonderful as are the illustrations by Christopher Canyon, and together they have created an awesome book. If you need to buy a gift for the child in your life, Sunshine on My Shoulders is perfect. The CD and musical score at the back of the book gives one the opportunity to experience the book through music as well as through literature.
Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars My Favorite Toot & Puddle.......2006-09-13

My 4 year old daughter and I are big fans of pigs, especially Toot and Puddle. In this story, Toot is depressed, and Puddle and Tulip try everything to make him feel better. It is a very sweet and endearing story of friendship.

5 out of 5 stars A Story of Friendship.......2005-10-08

Toot is moping in Woodcock Pocket. Puddle his friend want to help his friend smile. He tries repeatedly to help his friend. He never gives up until his friend smiles.

Puddle explains to Tulip, we can't be happy all the time. This is good for children to learn at a young age. It could prevent some major problems in the child's life later.

5 out of 5 stars A perfect story about friendship for all ages.......2003-05-06

I was looking for a gift for my god daughter and my best friend recommended the Toot and Puddle series. She already had the first book and raved about it to me. Not only did I purchase this book for one smart little girl who loves Toot and Puddle, but I purchased two more books from the series for my baby on the way. What I absolutely loved about this book is the extent of friendship between these two adorable pigs, one that reminds me of the deep and loving relationship i share with my best friend.I was so impressed with Holly Hobbie's portrayal of this beautiful relationship, as well as her amazing illustrations that I would recommend this particular book and the rest of the series to children of all ages as well as the adult population, for the joy I got out of it is inexplicable. I can happily say that my best friend and I not only share a love for Toot and Puddle, but that our babies will grow up appreciating its beauty and story about friendship too.

5 out of 5 stars Uplifting - a Beautiful Book.......2000-05-16

This was the first Toot and Puddle we ever saw, and it's still our favorite. The message(s) is (are) important - and all too rare in children's books - that we aren't all cheerful and happy all the time, and that's OK, that we all need the steady faith and support of dear friends, that STORMY weather isn't necessarily "bad" weather and can be renewing. We adore Toot and Puddle and Holly Hobbie's art, which I would happily display in my living room if I could find some prints from the world of Toot and Puddle.

2 out of 5 stars lacks the rhythm of the first "Toot and Puddle".......1999-12-31

Though the illustrations are typically charming (don't miss the pigs' turtlenecks), this book lacks the read-aloud timing and rhythm of the first Toot and Puddle book. My daughter loves predictability, but it is hard to guess what will be happening on the next page. Also the inclusion of a third major character (Tulip the parrot) precludes the back-and-forth rhythm that graced the first book.

This book is AMAZAING!
I am always amazed by the creativity of people especially during life's challenges. This book is by far the best use of creativity I have ever seen. By reading this book with a loved one, it will give you a gift to cherish forever. I hope that this book is translated into many languages and that it is read by husbands, daughters, sons, grandchildren, friends and nurses throughout the world.

5 out of 5 stars Not Only For One's Parents.......2005-05-10

Let me second the enthusiasm for Burdick's delightful book, which indeed will bring back some haunting images from even the most caved-in mind. It is not, however, solely geared for family members and I would encourage all to buy a copy of this book, you do not need to have a mother or father with Alzheimer's, it is perfect for reading along with any friends of yours, even younger people, who are troubled by memory challenges in the Alzheimer's range. For example, I took this book with me on my visit to the local elderhostel near my home, offering to share it with anyone who would like to read a good book, and once we were snuggled up on a park bench overlooking a pool swimming with koi, the "two lap" approach found me reading aloud to a white male stranger who might have been in his early 80s, a dignified man whose clothes were impeccable, if somewhat out of style, and obviously he had memory problems as he could not tell me his name. We sat down and began to pore through the book, with its lovely illustrations--not childlike, just very clear and nostalgic. After a few pages he told me that he had been in the Normandy Invasion! There are other suggestions in the book, tips on how to say things in ways which don't threaten the memory-challenged adult, and to my astonishment the man was telling me about a friend of his who had drowned in the surf on Omaha Beach, and he (my new friend) had climbed to safety on the back of his dead buddy. When we got to the part about his favorite song, he began to sing, "My Buddy," a song which I did not know but he sang it so loudly that others in the park turned their heads and a few chimed in.

Some residents said that this man had not spoken aloud in years, and one said this was the first time anyone even knew that my new friend was an American. He spoke so little that, based on his name, many had thought he was a Frenchman marooned in this country by dementia. That day we truly felt "the sunshine on our faces." Even though it was not (strictly speaking) a good memory, it was still a precious one.

5 out of 5 stars This book helped my father........2005-05-09

My father is in a nursing home with an Alzheimers related illness. It has been a long time since he talked about his life, rather than present time, moment-to-moment experiences. When he and I held the two-lap book and I read with him he began to brighten up and remember things, especially the drive in the country page. He remembered loving bringing his family on country drives and even mentioned places we used to go. We had one of the sweetest visits that we have had in years. Thank you for this book!

I am talking to the nursing home about having several copies to read to the other patients.

5 out of 5 stars A gift for caregivers and loved ones.......2005-04-21

Lydia Burdick has given caregivers and family members a true gift by showing them a way to interact with their loved ones who may be slipping into dementia. This book is simple and lovely and evokes happy memories that can bring about conversations with those we love. The illustrations are bright and colorful and the text is simple and direct. And it's big enough so it fits on two laps at once! This is a true work of the heart.

5 out of 5 stars Sunshine in My Soul.......2006-03-30

When Brazilian race car driver Ayrton Senna died in a racing accident in May of 1994, author Linda Archibald wasn't even vaguely aware of who Senna was. But living in the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil, at the time of his parting, she could not help observing the marvelous way the Brazilian people turned their mourning of their national hero's death into a celebration of his life.

It was in "The magic of that one Brazilian day" that Linda Archibald underwent a life-changing experience. She realised that she had ben plodding through life too cautiously, too deliberately, and that in doing so she had missed much of the joy that she might have seized.

In Sunshine in My Soul, Sister Archibald describes the change of heart that has enabled her to enjoy a brighter, richer existence, and she tells how to find light, joy, and happiness in everyday life.

When her husband, Elder Dallas N. Archibald, drowned while fishing on a river in Chile in 1998, Linda's joyful outlook was put to a stern test. But she found that even the hardest blows of life can be turned into spiritually enriching experiences. She testifies that the Lord truly intends for us to have joy and rejoicing in every aspect of mortality.

Beautifully written, almost lyrical in its language, Sunshine in My Soul will provide encouragement and hope for all readers, regardless of the circumstances of their lives.

I highly recommend this book to everyone, especially young teenagers who are getting ready to be adults. It is a light true picture of reality. This is a real education. This man, Jimmie Davis, surely knew how to cut hair when he tended a barber shop one day for a barber. He put a bowl on top of the customer's head and cut all around the bowl. Now that's nearly 100 years ago. This man will be one who has lived in 3 centuries. Get it!

          4 out of 5 stars I slept but I wasn't bored.......2006-08-16

Okay, some of the elements of this book are a little silly -- like the dead squirrel poem -- but again, I'm trying to get into the Nero Wolfe fan mind, and this book pushed me just a wee bit closer. I find Wolfe just plain irritating, but the star of the show for me continues to be Archie, who really does underestimate himself. Well, this was book 3 for me; on to book 4.

4 out of 5 stars Let's stop by the brownstone and see what's new..........2006-02-21

When Otis Jarrell came to see famed detective Nero Wolfe he did not realize that his cause was hopeless. He wanted Wolfe to investigate a domestic matter, the fact that Jarrell's problem was his daughter-in-law rather than his wife did not impress Wolfe. When Jarrell suggested that Archie move into his penthouse undercover though Wolfe decided to accept the case because he and Archie were annoyed with each other. The ten thousand dollar retainer didn't hurt either.

Needless to say shortly after Archie took up his post in the Jarrell household things began to get complicated, first a break-in and theft, then a murder leading Nero to disrupt his routine, call in all the troops, join forces with a FEMALE colleague and leaving Fritz to guard the brownstone's door for the night. In the end of course, Wolfe triumphs.

This is one of the later entries into the series. The situations have all occured before, the banter between the detectives has become a bit worn, life at the brownstone has been examined many times in the past and the action in this one is a bit slow. Even with all of this a visit to the Wolfe establishment is not to be missed. This is a must for fans of the series and not a bad place to start for anyone new even if it is not one of the best.

2 out of 5 stars Why Did She Write It?.......2004-10-31

Stout creates a female character here who writes a poem. She is moved to write it because she has killed a squirrel and is mourning its loss. Her turn of phrase is "If Death Ever Slept..."

This supposes, of course, that death never sleeps. The conceptual buzz much informs this book. As detective fiction goes, it is leisurely and ruminative, so I give it only the two stars you see. However, I enjoyed its characterizations of the relationships in "the family." Archie's insecurities and professional jealousy are never better described than they are here, and the other extended family members are given a good airing.

But why did she write it? If it was because she felt bad about the squirrel and wants to share, she almost succeeds. There is too little satisfaction at the conclusion of this one; its tone of futility and moral loss rival the way the reader feels at the end of "Fer-de-Lance."

2 out of 5 stars Hurry Up And Kill Somebody Already!.......2004-09-09

Author Rex Stout presents a delightful central concept showcasing one of mystery fiction's most unlikely yet enduring partnerships, that of rotund master detective Nero Wolfe and his smartalecky sidekick Archie Goodwin, who does all the legwork and narrating. Magnificent Manhattan ambiance and clever offhand dialogue abound, as does an appreciation for the finer things, like orchids, shad roe with creole sauce, and a second bottle of beer.

"If Death Ever Slept" showcases these strengths, but as a murder mystery, it's neither plausible nor interesting. Wolfe is hired by a wealthy Manhattanite (vaguely described as a "capitalist" in "Who's Who") to investigate his daughter-in-law, whom he suspects of stealing business secrets. Archie poses as the man's new secretary, and finds himself "in a hive of predators and parasites" with the former including at least one person armed with a .38 and no compunction against using it.

This should be good stuff, fine company for a rainy night, but the characters never gel into anything interesting, just stereotypes. You don't feel anything for them or their situations, not even when one of them is murdered. The pace is sloggy. "If Death Ever Slept" is an luxurious ambiance bath, and those that treasure Goodwin's funny lines and wry observational humor are well-served (About being caught in his room with his shoes off: "Conferring in bare feet with a man who is properly shod may not put you at a disadvantage, but it seems to.") Alas, it never engages the reader as a story.

I had problems with the way Wolfe and Goodwin took the law into their own hands, tampering with a crime scene and then parsing over legalities while people died. Normally when the cops show up all out of sorts at Wolfe's brownstone stoop, you are supposed to relish the moment the fat man puts them in their place, but this time the pair meddles with a police investigation that's on the right track while Nero and Archie haven't a clue.

Also, Archie's practiced patter wears thin after a while. He's got a great set of wisecracks, but nothing in this story seems to bother him, so why should we care? We already have a setpiece scenario, with all the stock characters in their stock situations, so any bit of empathy we can get from our humble narrator will help. But the most he offers is that the client's daughter does a mean rumba.

Nero Wolfe books are usually good to great, and this at least is at times pretty funny. But it's far from Stout's best. If you read this and nothing else, give Stout another chance. And if you are looking for your first Nero Wolfe, there's at least a couple dozen better bets than this.

          4 out of 5 stars A Good Starter.......2003-02-04

Having watched the TV series this was the first book i got my hands on and was not disappointed.

It's a quick read and holds all the elements, including more of Fritz's amazing cooking (I've craved omelettes with strawberries for weeks now!) Nero and Archies playful/teasing relationship, and a host of glamorous suspects.

A great introduction, not the best, not the worst, slipping you right into the obsession that is Nero Wolfe. With the yellow shirt's, glasses of milk, and poor Inspector Cramer about to eat his hat - again!

I found myself afterwards, wishing i had been a friend of one of the suspects, sidling my way into Wolfe's office, playing an undercover role with Archie. I'm going to have to read it again, till i get my next fix at the bookstore.

          Book Description

The legendary Nero Wolfe is hired by a despicable millionaire named Otis Jarrell who is trying to prove that his daughter-in-law is an information-leaking, double-crossing snake. In spite of Wolfe’s reluctance, his assistant Archie brashly agrees to perform as Jarrell’s personal secretary — under an assumed identity — to gather information about the possible misdeeds of said daughter-in-law. Everything turns serious when one of the detectives' associates is found shot dead — and the evidence points to Jarrell’s own missing revolver.

Michael Prichard once again does a wonderful job bringing this story to life. His emotional portrayals of Archie's semi-conscious human frailty is extremely appealing.
