Tananarive Due is intrigued by how unfolding timelines and alternate destinies impinge on people's lives. "How frightening it is," she writes, "when fate is at liberty to take over what will has begun." As in her absorbing first novel, The Between, My Soul to Keep is about what happens when the domestic joy of a middle-class African American family (in this story, he's a jazz scholar, she's a reporter, and they have a 5-year-old daughter) is shattered by supernatural forces and memories of events long past. The story is deeply involving because of the characters' appeal, and suspenseful because the loving husband (who turns out to be a 500-year-old immortal) is so alien, he's utterly unpredictable. The passages recalling the husband's experiences as a slave in the American South in the 1800s are especially gripping. It's a melodramatic approach to dark fantasy, but it works well.

Book Description

When Jessica marries David, he is everything she wants in a family man: brilliant, attentive, ever youthful. Yet she still feels something about him is just out of reach. Soon, as people close to Jessica begin to meet violent, mysterious deaths, David makes an unimaginable confession: More than 400 years ago, he and other members of an Ethiopian sect traded their humanity so they would never die, a secret he must protect at any cost. Now, his immortal brethren have decided David must return and leave his family in Miami. Instead, David vows to invoke a forbidden ritual to keep Jessica and his daughter with him forever.

Harrowing, engrossing and skillfully rendered, My Soul to Keep traps Jessica between the desperation of immortals who want to rob her of her life and a husband who wants to rob her of her soul. With deft plotting and an unforgettable climax, this tour de force reminiscent of early Anne Rice will win Due a new legion of fans.

5 out of 5 stars Smart, Sexy and Scary.......2007-09-18

"My Soul to Keep" is an engaging read by Tananarive Due. Jessica has married the perfect man. David is a brilliant Jazz scholar, author of several books, handsome, sexy and a wonderful father...but unbeknownst to Jessica, David is also an immortal being with a dark past and possibly even darker present.

The dialogue is strong and even though the premise is way out there, Due's storytelling ability is such that suspension of disbelief is not a problem. Incidentally, this story is a surprisingly accurate symbol for what happens in long term relationships; at some point we all experience(in the immortal words of Billy Joel) the Stranger that kicks us right between the eyes...that time when we see something in our partner that is so foreign that it seems that we never knew them at all. Jessica begins to suspect that there is a hidden secret in her beloved David and Due's descriptions of Jessica's personal denials and pendulum like emotions concerning her husband are brilliant. Most of us that have been married for some time have experienced that and the author manages to harness that natural feeling of anxiety and uses it in "My Soul to Keep". Whether Ms. Due has done this intentionally or not (I suspect she has though) doesn't really matter.

"My Soul to Keep" could fit into a half dozen genre's and whether you like horror, science fiction, romance or action/adventure you will enjoy "My Soul to Keep".

4 out of 5 stars Intense Read, Not My Usual Style.......2007-03-05

I don't normally read books like this one. It is a horror/suspense/vampire type book that I would normally pass up in the library or bookstore.

One of the members in our bookclub, Lakeisha Jones, suggested this selection to the Each One Teach One Book Club when it was her turn to host, and I decided to give it a try. I will say that Tananarive Due is an excellent writer that brings her story across with flair and style. Even though I am not used to reading subjects like this, the way she did it, by giving an African twist to the usual Vampire story, did catch my attention.

If I enjoyed vampire or horror stories, it may have gotten a 5 star review from me, but since this is just not my cup of tea, I had to give it a 4 star review because of the wonderful writing ability of the author.

5 out of 5 stars When is the movie coming out?!.......2007-02-16

My Soul to Keep is THE best book I have in quite some time. I only regret that I didn't pick it up sooner. I just finished reading it and definitely has all the elements of a great story, be it fiction, romance, or supernatural. Due is a truly talented author. My Soul to Keep will make you laugh and cry. I truly appreciate the depth of characters in this novel. I look forward to starting The Living Blood which is a follow to this novel. I'm sure I won't be disappointed and neither will you if choose to read My Soul to Keep. You won't be able to put it down! I get up very early in the morning for work, but when I tried to sleep, I had to get back out of bed to read just a few more pages!

5 out of 5 stars This is..........2007-01-18

the best book I've ever read in my life, with the exception of its sequel, "The Living Blood". And if you haven't read the sequel, do yourself a favor and get it right away.

The 2 books were recommended to me and sista Due did not disappoint at all. She is an awesome writer.

I loved the character Dawit/David. He challenged me on a few levels throughout the book, yet I loved him just the same.

I can't wait to see the movie!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Elegant writer, reads like silk and honey.......2006-12-29

This is one of the smoothest books I have ever read, especially in the realm of what gets called "horror." I looked into the author because I saw she had been nominated for a Bram Stoker Award (which are usually really good). I wasn't disappointed. There's enough on the book flaps and reviews to tell you what the book is about, so I won't repeat it all here. Suffice it to say this is a compelling, interesting and not-very-cliched book. Author has a voice unlike anyone I have ever read.

Start with a leisurely summer in a mountain valley in eastern Tennessee, where gnarled apple trees in the misty morning evoke thoughts of gnomes in sinister fairy tales, and where spirited horses beckon for long trail rides. Throw in a bunch of friendly country dwellers who host enthusiastic barn dances and hint darkly about stills hidden in the woods. Then imagine all of this as experienced through the eyes of a nervous New York City photographer, a divorced woman with her small boy. Sex with a handsome cousin and ample photographic opportunities seem to promise a restful summer for this woman, but when her son starts to hang out with an "imaginary" playmate, things go sour quickly. It's another ghost story from Judith Hawkes--not as brilliantly nuanced and tightly wound as Julian's House, yet just as richly descriptive, and satisfying in a lazy sort of way.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars AN ALTERNATIVE TO SOMINEX.......2003-02-06

Judith Hawkes' "My Soul to Keep" could have been a good ghost story, but she's made it so long and contrived that it just didn't work for this reader.
Hawkes has a way in setting atmospheric scenes, but she doesn't go anywhere with them. Heroine (?) Nan alternates between being a shrewish wife, a doting but inattentive mother, and a nymphomaniac with her stud cousin Sky. Enter typical "woodsy" people like doomed Lucy; the psychic Flutie; the redneck moonshiner Jerry; the kindly bookstore owner, Cooper, and then worse of all, Nan's estranged husband Gabe. Seems like something terrible happened to Nan and her playmate Tucker back in 1968, that she just can't remember. Twenty years later, she returns to the family home in Tennessee and finds that the ghost of little Tucker has intentions on her eight year old son, Stephen.
While the ghost story itself is intriguing, the payoff is a real disappointment. And what's even more frustrating--what happens to Nan and Stephen? Do they stay in Tennessee? Does she continue her relationship with hunky Sky? What does Gabe do? Why is what happened in 1968 such a washout?
Not recommended unless you need something besides a sleeping pill to sleep.

4 out of 5 stars entertaining, but not her best.......2001-09-03

I found this novel to be entertaining and creepy, but not as beautifully and subtly written as Julian's House and The Heart Of A Witch. Still, it's suspenseful and compelling, and a good, solid read.

5 out of 5 stars Sleepless nights here.......2001-05-25

my favorite of her wonderful books - the characters are sympathetic and the suspense is honestly creepy

4 out of 5 stars A Suspense Story That Seems Real.......2000-12-18

Fashion photographer Nan Lucas inherits a farm in rural Tennessee from her grandmother. Nan decides to spend the summer at the farm with her eight-year-old son Stephen. A lazy holiday will provide a needed break from the fast pace of New York and the pain of her crumbling marriage. The only trouble is that the visit revives long dormant memories of a terrible drowning accident twenty years ago. Hawkes has written a suspense story that seems real and the characters are interesting.

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable but not great.......1997-08-04

If you like ghost stories and romance on the side, this is a book to read. I agree with the previous reviewers, this is not in the same league as her first novel "Julian's House" ....not even close. Although I was hoping it would be of the same caliber as her first novel, I was greatly disappointed. In of itself, it is a book with a few eerie moments, but more superficial

Although this book is recommended for young children and has an elementary feel to the illustrations, it places too much emphasis on death for elementary school children. I was particularly uncomfortable with the almost preachy way it tells us that we should be grateful to be alive. The book contains facts that may be better suited for older children, but it is written in simple language meant for young children.

An entrepreneur with nothing more than a dream teams up with an actor just out of prison and a has-been scriptwriter. Is their effort truly inspired or doomed from the start? A true star, Brent had arrived, but a downward spiral ended in a terrible accident and six long years behind bars. Then God finds Brent in prison, and on release he sets himself up with a small business and volunteers with a local theatre group. Celia had thought the inner and outer scars left by the accident were far beyond forgiveness. How could she ever find it in her to absolve Brent simply because he asks? A Christian businessman is challenged with a new venture, but how can he make a film when he doesn't even know where to begin? Thus begins an odyssey bringing some very unlikely people together to do something bigger than any of them could have imagined on their own.

4 out of 5 stars entertaining film war .......2007-09-08

Oscar winner Brent Stark assumes his career is over due to his drug addiction and subsequent arrest and conviction. However, instead of feeling sorry for himself, he turns to God. Upon his release, Nashville business mogul Bobby Dupree hires him to direct a Daniel Boone biography on a shoestring that turns the frontiersman back into the legend by ignoring any of his faults or misdeeds.

Personal assistant Shari Khan will do anything to reach Hollywood's top echelon. When she learns of Brent's film, she persuades her major company to produce a totally different version that makes Boone into a monster who mistreated Native Americans and abandoned his family for lengthy elbow room escapes.

This High Noon film war between an international Hollywood giant and a regional Tennessee gnat is very entertaining even with stereotyping both sides of the conflict. Hollywood is selfish while pretending to support moderate values to sell tickets; Tennessee is altruistic while supporting Christian values while believing the message will sell tickets. Davis Bunn fans even liberal democrats will root for Brent, who has found the ultimate miracles when he turned to the Lord for salvation.

4 out of 5 stars True Story of Bikers, Drugs, Sheriff's and Women That Reads Like Fiction.......2006-09-22

A unique trip into the anatomy of the toughest of the bikers combined with an exciting, real life drama of undercover work on the edge of disaster.

Through his connections in both law enforcment and the biker culture, Detroit has captured a true story that reads like fiction. Mix together one compromised biker willing to trade his fellow bikers for a get out of jail free card, a beautiful undercover deputy sheriff willing to ride with the bikers and law enforcement constrained by the rules of the game and you have one hell of a story.

The writing style has the tight feel of a screenplay where more emotional content will be added on the sound stage. The absense of emotion does however add to both the reality and the stark terror of a very dangerous undercover operation running on the edge of disaster.

The result of the operation was spectacular with dozens of felony arrests and numerous convictions.

              Highly recommended.

It is sad that for whatever reason, perhaps the desire of some involved to continue living, that this story has not made it to the screen.

I gave this book 4 1/2 stars even though it was a pretty good book because the author and the author explains this in the forward that he has put in dialogue to keep the interest of the reader and you have to notice this in sections of the book because you know there is no way even through interveiws that he could these accounts so it makes you go How Does he figure that or know and this in turn makes you wonder how much is made up dialogue. But this is a good book so give it a read

It feels pointless to write about a book that is out of print. However, this book made me wish for more by the same (pseudonymous) author. I became very interested in the Hell's Angels, and thought a lot about the man who acted as an informant. In my experience, this was a book that really stays with you.

Usually, a police procedural compromises some facet of storytelling. Character development must be sacrificed to pacing and plotting, or forensic detail must be displaced by rapid-fire action sequences. But Sergeant Joe Dartelli is a captivating personality enmeshed in a balanced, suspenseful, and intelligently scripted serial murder mystery.

What makes this mystery so different is that many of its secrets are held within Dartelli's mind. From the opening pages, Joe is haunted by a supposed suicide case, the mysterious "Ice Man," who he suspects could be linked to his old mentor. Afraid of the truth, Joe struggles to explain away a new suicide while we watch the facts unfold within him. As an added treat, Ridley Pearson displays remarkable computer savvy as Dartelli's old flame, Ginny, hacks her way through to some of the most crucial parts of the puzzle. The author is not afraid to linger on small details--a woman's earrings or the temperature of a corpse--but he rarely overindulges in such description. Rather, he has written an excellent piece of fiction that happens to be a police thriller. Pearson, author of such previous works as No Witnesses, has produced a minor suspense masterpiece in Chain of Evidence. --Patrick O'Kelley

5 out of 5 stars Another great find.......2006-02-24

Ridley Pearson has done it again. I began reading his books with the Lou Boldt series and then progressed to all of his others. I just could not put them down and often finish one in a night...much to my chagrin the next morning!!! Try him..you will love him!!!

5 out of 5 stars Good Book, gladly recommended........2005-04-22

I didn't like the prologue of this book. When I had first started reading it reminded me of a Jerry Springer show. So I dropped it to read something more interesting.
Two months later, when I was consumed by boredom, almost to the brink of insanity. I picked the book up.
The first part is, eh... kind of boring. The the investigation and the methods involved are real enough. His relationships are questionable and tad obscure; with his mentor, with his 'girlfriend'.
The main character isn't very dyanmic, but he has a very underplayed sentimentalism that will have 'the readers' sympathize with him.
The minor characters aren't very dynamic either, with the exception of his mentor walter Zeller, who might just be insane.
The book is comprised of mainly rising action, which is interesting, because after you get past all of the methodical investigating, relationships down played tension. It's just action, suprises, blood and glancing bullets all the way. The climax of this book is one of the best ever written and for just the climax alone I will rate the abook a five.
              I highly recommend this Book.

              1 out of 5 stars I hope it was a joke.......2001-06-08

I have not read any other books by Ridley Pearson and perhaps I should. I am hoping that this book is not an example of his finest work. Perhaps it just slipped through or maybe it was published as a joke!

This is not to say don't read it. If you are looking for a way to while away the hours I would say reading Chain of Evidence scores above an evening of watching sitcoms on TV.

I'm sorry, but the characters were made of cardboard. Devices are thrown into the plot just to make it work. Dart, the main character just doesn't seem to have the motivation to do what he does. His relationship with his mentor and possible adversary is hollow. I have to admit that I started marking the book in the margins when things bothered me!

Here is one tiny example. One of the women in his life, Angie, also works for the Hartford Police (as he does). She is divorced with kids. The kids never appear in the book, as they don't have to. But instead of using a plausible excuse for them being absent (and giving Dart and Angie a chance to, ahem, get it on) she ditches them (with the neighbor, it's not really clear). Wouldn't it be more likely that she shares joint custody with her ex and they are spending the time with him? And don't ask me about the non kid friendly loft she lives in.

It's little things like this that make the whole story not ring true. It feels like the author either didn't take time to think things through or perhaps this was the treatment for a screenplay. I could see it made into a movie where Hollywood could gloss over the little details that have to be spelled out in a novel for it to work.

Also, the stereotyping of minorities borders on being offensive.

This is just my opinion. Please do read the novel for entertainment. I guess my expectations are just too high. Who do I read and enjoy? How about Elmore Leonard and Ed McBain?

Now I'm going to see if I can find another Ridley Pearson novel and give it a chance!

              2 out of 5 stars Forensic follies.......2001-02-20

Ridley Pearson comes up with some of the more original serial murder plots - in Chain of Evidence, a legendary forensic scientist turns rogue - or does he? - against those he thinks are helping criminals like his wife's murderer.

Hero cop Joe Dartelli has everything a fiction hero needs - weirdly abusive childhood, the choice of beautiful and brilliant co-worker or beautiful and brilliant ex, ... and an annoying range of physical reactions. In just a couple of pages early on, he:

feels a worming sense of worry twist his gut, feels the constant din of his internal voice nagging, feels his words catch in his throat, his mind reels, the worry burns inside him again, he felt the need to spill his guts, his voice becomes too tight to answer... I kept hoping for someone to put him out of his misery.

The circumstances of the original cover-up aren't that clear, the computer hacking at the end is ludicrously fanciful, and seemingly every location in the book is

described as too dangerous for whites to go after dark, far more so than any book set in NY or LA. In between all this murk, there are also flashes of Mr Pearson's talent as a snappy crime writer. Still, you might want to skip this one, and read Beyond Recognition instead.

              1 out of 5 stars Dissappointing.......2000-06-17

What can I say ? Extremely predictable and unrealistic.

Inspector Hal Challis has been summoned to Mawson's Bluff, his childhood home in the Australian Outback, where his father is dying. Sergeant Ellen Destry is left to head an investigation into a ring of pedophiles that has descended on the peaceful Mornington Peninsula, a resort community near Melbourne. A little girl has been abducted from the fairgrounds at the annual Waterloo Show; it takes her mother twenty-four hours to report her missing. By then, hope is slim that the police will find the child before it is too late.

Challis' sister's difficult husband disappeared from the Bluff four years ago; since then Meg has received nuisance mail that she assumes comes from him. While Challis is in town, an extra buried body is discovered when a new grave is dug in the local graveyard. A black plastic bag containing the corpse of Meg's husband is found on top of a coffin that was interred four years earlier.

With two very different crimes to solve, Challis and Destry have their work cut out for them.

Garry Disher is the author of more than forty books for children and adults. Two of his mysteries have won the German Crime Fiction Critics Prize. He lives near Melbourne in Australia.
