Book Description
A delightful picture book loosely based upon the Charles Dickens story The Magic Fishbone.
When Molly's fairy godmother tells her that she will find a magic fishbone that will grant her but one wish, all her brothers and sisters want to know what Molly will wish for. There are many things Molly would like, and so many ways in which a wish would come in handy, but she decides to wait until she knows exactly what she wants.
Enchanting, old-fashioned illustrations depict a wondrous nineteenth-century London alive with elegantly clad cats, pigs, goats, birds, and other two- and four-legged creatures in Barbara McClintock's delightful reminder that patience and practicality are rewarded.

Beautiful Book!.......2006-11-20
This is a beautiful book with the most amazing illustrations you will find anywhere! My daughter is almost 3 and wants to hear this story over and over, and I love to read it to her.
VERY highly recommended!!
DELIGHTFUL WITH A MORAL WORTH REMEMBERING.......2001-10-10
Warm period watercolors bring to life this classic tale borrowed from Charles Dickens's story "The Magic Fish-Bone."
When Molly went to buy fish for dinner, she happened upon an old woman who told her that she would find a bone in her portion of dinner fish. The woman identified herself as Molly's Fairy Godmother, told her the bone would provide her with one magic wish, and then disappeared. Molly thought her imagination might be working over time, and went home.
Yet, that evening, sure enough, there was a bone left on Molly's plate. She kept the bone and contemplated everything for which she might wish but nothing seemed quite right.
What she really wants is eventually revealed, and with it a lesson in patience and rectitude for young readers.
The illustrations are delightful, and the moral worth remembering.

Tom Perrotta's first novel, The Wishbones, is all about that much-maligned class of 30-ish men who still live at home with their parents, guys who make furtive love to their girlfriends--if they have them at all--in the basement rec room or the back seat of a car. But Dave Raymond, the protagonist of The Wishbones, doesn't waste his time on Star Trek reruns or computer games; he spends his weekends playing in a wedding band called The Wishbones, using the rapidly receding dream of rock stardom as an excuse to put off growing up. The sudden death of a fellow musician sends Dave into something of a tailspin, however, and in a moment of weakness, he proposes to his longtime girlfriend, Julie. The engagement has hardly been announced when Dave meets Gretchen, a bridesmaid at one of the weddings at which The Wishbones play, and before long he's having serious doubts about his own marital plans.
Everybody knows someone like Dave, but a real-life puer aeternus is rarely as entertaining as Perrotta's fictional one. Perrotta wisely surrounds his sad-sack protagonist with an array of entertaining supporting characters, from a joint-smoking priest to one of Dave's band-mates whose life work is a musical based on Kennedy's assassination. By the time The Wishbones winds down to its well-deserved end, readers will be wishing for a second novel from Tom Perrotta soon.
Book Description
Everything was going pretty well for Dave Raymond, a thirty-one-year-old wedding musician. He still lived with his parents (but came and went as he pleased)--and though his job wasn't exactly the big time, it paid okay and gave him plenty of free time to hang out with the other Wishbones, downing beers and quizzing each other on rock and roll trivia. Yeah, life wasn't perfect, but it wasn't bad at all.
Then he had to blow it all by proposing to his girlfriend...

Customer Reviews:
Quick and entertaining read.......2007-08-08
I had formerly read Little Children...this book is somewhat different. It was a very quick and entertaining, and had very memorable and interesting characters, but it didn't delve as deep as the former. It almost read like a dramatic comedy, quick and to the point. A good summer beach or pool read.
Hilarious!.......2006-02-07
I howled reading this painfully accurate story of a wedding-band musician trying to maintain his rock and roll dreams when he's entering the age of Relaxed Fit. I give it a 9 only because I found the ending disappointing, but I have to say the description of the JFK assassination musical is worth the price of the book alone.
Just One More Song.......2005-12-31
Continuing with his uncanny ability to create likeable, "real" characters who find themselves in somewhat "unreal" (but totally beleiveable)circumstances, Tom Perrotta has crafted what may be the finest "coming of age" novel since "Catcher In The Rye". Ostensibly about a protagonist who is unceremoniously dragged into adulthood, this novel will ring true to anyone who has realized that John Lennon was right - "Life is what happens when you're busy making other plans". Main character Dave Raymond struggles less with circumstance than he does with choices, and along the way, readers are treated to a plethora of friends and family who are immediately recognizable, often flawed, and ultimately HUMAN. Love and sex, marriage and divorce, parenthood and prozac, death and disc jockeys, New Jersey and neo-Nazis - all add to the soundtrack which permeates their lives as they cautiously approach the future totally unprepared for what it might bring. Perrotta underscores this uncertainty with a swift, pointed plea at the story's end which ultimately serves to leave readers with a both true appreciation of the various characters' stuggles and a realization that they have just experienced something truly special.
In a time when originality in popular culture has been all but obliterated by formulaic mediocrity, Tom Perrotta is a national treasure. For the uninitiated, "The Wishbones" proves to be a shining example of his importance.
Nice Coming-of-Age Tale (With a Touch of Zepellin).......2005-12-30
Perotta is certainly a fine writer, as demonstrated by his self-assured first novel. This tale concerns a thirtysomething guy (Dave) who's a bit of a loser--he's dropped out of college, lives with his parents, still does the occasional pot, and can't commit to his longstanding girlfriend who's obviously several leagues too good for him. One of his faults that we can love him for, however, is his passion for classic rock music, since the story is centered on his participation in a wedding band "The Wishbones".
He has a last fling with loserdom by proposing to the girl who's been waiting for him to do so for fifteen years, and then cheating on her. He hasn't learned much about love in his adulthood so far, unable to understand that happiness comes from staying true to one partner, even though there are many intelligent, interesting, and attractive women in the world with whom sex would be exciting. A reasonable adult, for the most part, discovers this in his twenties and proposes to the one who'll take him and with whom he feels most comfortable.
Dave would've continued to cheat on his fiance, up till his marriage and almost certainly afterward as well, but his illicit girlfriend can't be happy in this charade and dumps him. She's a few years younger than he, but she has already grasped the abovementioned pearl of adulthood and doesn't want to waste time with someone who still is derailed by each new, intelligent, and alluring female.
By good fortune Dave may or may not deserve, he is never discovered in his treachery and gets to marry his steady girl. The real skill Perotta applies to this story is his ability to write in a way that makes us understand and like Dave, even as we are annoyed with his lingering immaturity. The many references to Led Zepellin, guitar playing, and rock 'n roll are wonderful, and the various characters in the Wishbones add variety and many laughes to Dave's last hurrah acting like a teenager.
I really enjoyed reading this novel, and those who enjoyed his most recent "Little People" will likely enjoy Tom Perotta's "The Wishbones" as there are several similar themes in both stories.
Themes are replayed between novels, but it is still a great read.......2005-12-15
After enjoying Perotta's Little Children, I sought out his earlier works. Reading The Wishbones, I was struck by how both novels share the theme of having an affair while you are in a rut with your partner or spouse. The tension in both books is centered on whether the long-term relationship should be broken up for the excitement of the fling. The difference, however, is that I was struck by the true love connection between the philanders in The Wishbones, while I thought the Little Children adulterers were just bored, not soulmates in any way.
The Wishbones is a great read for anyone post-college who is wondering about the direction their life is taking, or who has friends who seem aimless since they've turned 25 or so. When do you have to grow up and get a real purpose in life? There's a lot of recognizable material in this book, and it rings very true. Highly recommended to any fan of good fiction.

Book Description
They are fashioned out of materials as varied as themselves wishbones, apples, clay, bread, ivory, palm leaves, and sealskin. They come from the tropics and the tundra, the desert and the mountains, from times of war and times of peace. What they wear tells us of their homes. Their faces are calm, fierce, beautiful, wistful, ugly, inscrutable. Dolls have been cherished throughout time by children all around the world children who have carried them, dressed them, and whispered secrets to them. With haunting photographs and a text that speaks poignantly of the time when children must leave their dolls behind, this book captures the uncanny and enduring comfort of dolls. Michelle Markel wrote this book out of a deep affection for dolls and for folk art. She was given the idea for her book by "a little green and purple doll, an alebrije, in a glass case at a Mexican folk art exhibit." She believes that dolls have the power to lead children into worlds not their own.

A multicultural celebration of the art of dollmaking.......2001-11-11
I was really impressed by "Cornhusk, Silk, and Wishbones: A Book of Dolls from Around the World," by Michelle Markel. The author discusses many different types of dolls. Each entry includes a short but informative article and a full-color, richly detailed photograph.
I won't mention all the dolls depicted, but here are some highlights: bread dolls from Ecuador, a 19th century corn husk doll from the United States, a 19th century French Jumeau doll with an elegant outfit and glass eyes, Russian Matryoshkas (nesting dolls), ornately clothed Thai Ramakien dolls, a Mexican nativity set, and much more. A true visual feast.
A Doll Book for Everyone.......2000-10-22
A delightful book on an intriguing subject. Michelle Markel introduces the reader to dolls and doll crafting in an easy understandable manner. This book is interesing to both adults and children alike. Complimented by outstanding photographs and descriptions, this beautiful book should be on every doll lovers shelf!

As in all Wishbone tales this story has us looking at a famous book and dealing with another story. In the case of the mystery tales we have a mystery in another mystery. This makes for a doubly mysterious book. It was funny and kind of scary. It as a surprise at the end as all mysteries are. I liked the book and thing everyone should read the whole series.

Great book ... Great plot!.......1999-03-25
This is such a good book and mainly because I couldn't find the treasure before the end of the novel. This took place in the Gulf of Mexico. I liked how the author described the setting. It's so cool when Wishbone talked to himself. 5th grader - Nick Gormican

Mysterious.......2000-05-14
This book is great. You have to pay close attention to solve this mystery. Try it!
Book Description
The hardcore hip-hop debut novel from a natural born storyteller.
"I had all this s-racing through my head. I figured that if the pigs was asking about Dex then they had to know he was rolling with somebody which meant they was going to be looking for me too..."
Blinking Red Light is a story of temptation and betrayal, where sex looks easy but the stakes are way higher than the players could have known.
When Dexter and a longtime friend come across a sweet hook up, it's a deal neither can refuse: they are paid large sums of money to sleep with women with no strings attached... part of a blackmail ring that quickly backfires. Soon the two are caught in a predicament with lethal consequences. Twists and turns come flying at them full speed from the rugged streets of North Philly to the eerie back roads of North Carolina.
Blinking Red Light is fast-paced and intriguing, from its opening line to the shocking conclusion-----a thrilling ride about the madness that ensues when easy money comes a man's way.

How dare you folks compare this man's work to Donald Goines.......2007-03-10
This book is garbage. I wish I could have given it a half of a star. I am so glad I only paid $1 for this book from a used book sale. I read the other reviews and I'm sure no one over 25 would give this book more than one star. People, do yourself a favor and read Eric J Dickey, E. Lynn Harris,Walter Mosley, Mary Monroe, just to name a few real authors! If you are looking for an exciting street novel, read Iceberg Slims books. His and D. Goines books can be found on amazon or holloway house publishing co. website.
AIIGHT!!!!!!.......2007-02-28
I HAD THIS BOOK SITTING ON A SHELF FOR ALMOST A YEAR BEFORE I DECIDED TO PICK IT UP AND FINISH IT. I HAD LET ONE OF MY FRIENDS READ IT FIRST AND SHE SAID IT WAS HORRIBLE, SO THAT WAS MY DELAY IN READING THE BOOK. BUT AFTER I PICKED IT UP, I REALLY BEGAN TO EJOY THE BOOK. THERE WAS SOME VERY BORING PARTS BUT OVERALL I BELIEVE IT WAS AN EXCELLENT READ. (I MOST LIKELY WOULD NEVER READ IT AGAIN)
I Challenge You... .......2007-01-18
to figure out the ending to this book. It's subtley written, yet major! Read it and see what I mean.
BRL is a street novel that tells the story of two friends making what appears to be easy money in the beginning. However, it doesn't take long before all hell breaks loose in their world and the book takes off on an unpredictable course of murder, deception, and betrayal that concludes in a mind blowing way. But the question is...are you smart enough to catch it?
MMF debuted himself well with this one.
good,but..........2006-04-07
ok, this was a good book. it was interesting and well written and it kept me on the edge of my seat. there was always something that happended that you were waiting to find out. it had a lot of action. but the ending! nothing happened to dex's triflin azz and herb didnt get his either, not like i wanted him to. and plus, dude, ( i called him dude because they never mentioned his name) was kind of weak, he didnt handgle stuff like he should have. if something had happened to dex and herb it would have been perfect. but other than that it was a really good book. i would recommend it, it had funny parts adn it really gets you into it. get this book! mmf did a good job on this one
Green Light on Blinking Red Light.......2005-11-17
This was a great street novel with a story that will amaze you.
This reminded me of an up to date Donald Goines type tale.
Mister Mann Frisby did an excellent job.
Product Description
At age 27, Dexter and his cousin, the storyteller with a peculiar name (that is never revealed), are not looking for a job nor have they ever been employed. Their latest scheme plunges them into a summer of disasters and the perfect hustle: being paid to have sex with women as a part of a blackmail ring. It is easy money with no strings attached until they find Tony, their Italian employer, dead. The tragedy sets off a series of events in which the men are either running from a situation or creating one. From the rugged streets of Philadelphia to the country roads of Durham, North Carolina, Dexter and his cousin are caught up in an underworld of sex, betrayal, and big money. When the phone has a blinking red light, there is sure to be trouble, and each incident is more lethal, ridiculous, and dangerous than the last. Frisby is a great storyteller with a rugged Donald Goines street appeal. This originally self-published novel is full of humor, suspense, romance, and high drama.
