Book Description

From the critically acclaimed, best-selling author of Holler if You Hear Me, a fresh reassessment of the remarkable life, art, struggles, and death of an American icon.

Twenty years after his murder at the hands of his own father, Marvin Gaye continues to define the hopes and shattered dreams of the Motown generation. A performer whose career spanned the history of rhythm and blues, from doo-wop to the sultriest of soul music, Gaye's artistry magnified the contradictions that defined America's coming of age in the tumultuous 1970s. In his most searching and ambitious work to date, acclaimed critic Michael Eric Dyson illuminates both Marvin Gaye's stellar achievements and stunning personal decline--and offers an unparalleled assessment of the cultural and political legacy of R&B on American culture.

Through interviews with those close to Gaye--from his musical beginnings in a black church in Washington, D.C., to his days as a "ladies' man" in Motown's stable of young singers, from the artistic heights of the landmark album What's Going On? to his struggles with addiction and domestic violence--Dyson draws an indelible portrait of the tensions that shaped contemporary urban America: economic adversity, the drug industry, racism, and the long legacy of hardship.

Published to coincide with the twentieth anniversary of Gaye's death in 1984, and infused with the soulful prose that has become Michael Eric Dyson's trademark, Mercy, Mercy Me is at once a celebration of an American icon whose work continues to inspire, and a revelatory and incisive look at how a lost generation's moods, music, and moral vision continue to resonate today.

1 out of 5 stars Worse than a root canal.......2005-05-16

I thought the Publishers Weekly review was pretty accurate. This book read like a textbook. Maybe that is because Dyson is a college humanities professor. I could only get half way through before as Popeye said That's all I can stands, I can stands no more. Now I understand why I was able to purchase this book for 84 cents.

5 out of 5 stars Congrats to Prof. Michael Dyson.......2005-01-25

Michael Dyson is such a great author and activist. He really knows the ups and downs of Marvin Gaye's life. Oh that's such a blessing I think every Marvin Gaye fan should get this just b/c they wanna learn more 'bout this man. 2 me he's one of my idols I grew up 'cuz he's such an inspiration. This book tells it all from his days of sex, drugs, violence, threats between his dad, how he got involved in the resurrection of life and death and the coming side of R. Kelly's admirer of Gaye. You see Marvin never say "Give up on what u got". No he saids "Take it lightly and slowly when u dead and gone". That's why we need to check ourselves everyday to the fullest until we live this normal or martyred life. I haven't bought the book yet but I'll may go it ASAP once it's still here. This is such an interesting story from the man who did the lifetimes of Tupac Shakur, black women, black people, the culture of our nation and black music and now. Definitely recommend along w/ Mase's memoir and Miles' memoir.

3 out of 5 stars For the musicologist or sociologist, but not the rest of us.......2005-01-21

Dyson has written a fascinating analysis of the life and career of the late Marvin Gaye, a book that will appeal even to readers who don't know Gaye's music all that well. That having been said, this is a weighty tome, which touches on the religious, cultural and social influences of the black community and how they shaped the singer.

For example, in examining the effect of childhood abuse on Gaye, Dyson traces the problem of domestic violence in the black family to slavery. While this is an interesting discussion, it sways quite a bit from the book's star. Some readers will find these diversions tedious.

Because Gaye's relationship with Motown founder Berry Gordy is discussed at length, anyone who has studied the studio and its music will find something of interest here. References to the black church and family will ensure this book's place in programs of African-American study. Finally, the last chapter is in large part about present-day soul star R. Kelly. Dyson's discussion of how both men merged concepts of spirituality and sexuality within their music is interesting. In short, this book is a real find for a musicologist or sociologist, but it's not a biography "for the rest of us."

2 out of 5 stars Disappointment.......2004-10-22

The reason I didn't care for this book may partially be my fault--I did not realize it was an essay instead of a biography. But the rest of the reason is on this author--this book was pretty much fact-based, reasons for songs were thrown out sporadically, Tammy Terrell's name was all over the place but the beatings were danced around (and one speaker even plugged her own book--why is that even in there?) and the author went on a history lesson through Motown with other artists. The organization was terrible, there was no set subject pattern, and it was a dry read. I ended up just skimming the book after page 20.
And as big a fan as I am of R. Kelly, I did NOT want to read about HIM in a book with Marvin Gaye on the cover. It's like the author forgot who he was writing about through half the book; he starts talking about the Supremes, Gordy, R. Kelly, James Brown; stick to the man on the cover!

4 out of 5 stars The Man and His Music: A Critical Analysis.......2004-08-09

Michael Eric Dyson is known for his critical analysis of such public African American figures as Martin Luther King and Tupac Shakur. He has also delighted his fans with an ode to black women in Why I Love Black Women. In this body of work, Mercy Mercy Me, he explores the arts loves and demons of Marvin Gaye, one of the greatest singers of all time. This however, is not a biography in the traditional sense of how biographies are usually constructed. While accounts of Gaye's life from birth to death are chronicled, this writing is more of an analysis of the life of a man who essentially plotted his own death. When Gaye's father pulled the trigger in April 1984, twenty years ago, ironically the gun was the one he gave his father for protection.

Marvin Gaye was a genius, born to a fanatically religious father who ruled his home and family as a dictator. He was cruel, issuing beatings for the smallest infraction to both his wife and children. While the others buckled under the heat, Marvin, the most talented, rebelled and received the lion's share of punishment. He both loved and reviled his father, who was sexually deviated, yet proclaimed to be holier than thou. Marvin was a victim of his total upbringing, a loving, beaten down-trodden mother who coddled him and a sadistic father, who withheld his love. We learn of the psychological and emotional background of his Pentecostal father, Rev. Marvin P. Gaye and of what really went on behind the scenes.

Marvin loved women; he married Berry Gordy's sister, Anna, but it was a troubled marriage complicated by their age differences and her inability to have children. Yet, a son was produced--- that was Marvin's child-- sanctioned by the Gordys who had their own code of conduct for living that did not adhere to society's acceptable rules. In Gaye, we see a tortured soul as we learn how religion, sex and race intersected and became as one in his music and his life. There were women and more women. There was Tammy Terrell and depending on whom you talk to they were lovers or they were brother and sister. Also, there was a second wife, Janice.

The album that brought Marvin Gaye into mainstream American, What's Going On, was at first rejected by Berry Gordy as too radical but it was not to be denied. With the war in Viet Nam, the civil rights and free love movements, this album spoke volumes about the world in which we lived and that Marvin embraced. His music was his life and his life was music. Through careful text, Dyson takes us through a journey of how each album came to be. Here My Dear, Trouble Man, Let's Get it On were works of labor from a genius who was in a constant state of emotional turmoil

If you are looking for a straight biography of Gaye and his life from birth to death, this is not the text. There are several biographies on the market and Dyson highly recommends a few. At times the writing was dense with scholarly criticism and clinical terminology. However, it is offset by revealing commentaries such as an excellent chapter on the comparison and contrast of Marvin Gaye and R. Kelley which this reviewer found fascinating. The similarities are surprising and alarming and quite revealing when looking into the black family and community. Additionally, critical review of African Americans' attitudes on slavery and how black women are viewed in the black community is forthright, stunning and at times shameful. This manuscript will be long remembered and studied as a tool for looking into the life of a man who was an enigma even to himself. As always, Dyson delivers in his own style.

This without a doubt is the best researched book on life in appplachia for a fiction book. On top of that it is very good reading material. It's one of those books that tells a story that might just as well have been true. Top notch.

Book Description

Illona Haus announces her arrival as a bold voice in suspense with a gritty, edge-of-your-seat thriller. One woman's quest to bring a vicious killer to justice is about to lead her through the dark corners of obsession -- and test her capacity for mercy.

It's more than revenge.

Ravaged by guilt, Detective Kay Delaney is reeling from an attack that resulted in her partner's death. Her only consolation is that serial killer Bernard Eales, who shot her partner, sits in Maryland's State Penitentiary awaiting what's expected to be a sure conviction. But when the prosecution's star witness turns up dead -- and the body bears the same gruesome marks found on Eales's victims -- Kay wonders whether the right man is about to stand trial.

It's the fight of her life.

Partnered with her former lover, Danny Finnerty, Kay must confront the man who haunts her dreams -- even if it means proving him innocent of three shocking crimes. As the body count rises, Kay embarks on a dark journey that will test her shattered courage, pit her against an unseen evil, and challenge her to unlock a killer's chilling obsession...before it's too late.

5 out of 5 stars Blue Mercy.......2007-10-05

Illona Haus has captured my attention and gained a fan with her first book Blue Mercy. I couldn't put this book down. It was gripping and so well thought out. The attention to detail and character development was perfect. I first ordered this book through inter-library loan. After reading it I bought a copy for myself and several copies for friends.I immediately ordered her second book Blue Valor and anxiously awaited her third release Blue Justice. Each book was better than the preceding ones and I've bought many copies of each.
Though these books have graphic violence they seem all too real to turn you away. Anyone who likes psychological thrillers will love these books.
I'd read anything written by Illona Haus.

5 out of 5 stars Blue Mercy is a Masterpiece!.......2006-09-19

In Illona Haus' debut novel Blue Mercy, she pits her protagonist, Kay Delaney, against serial killer Bernard Eales, who had gunned down her partner and savagely beat her the year before. Although Eales is awaiting trial and all the evidence points to his guilt, a shadow is thrown over the case when a new murder spawns some serious questions.

Paired with her ex-lover Finn, Kay investigates the murder of their star witness against Eales, and is shocked to find similarities between Eales' past victims and the fresh case. Could they have made a mistake? Could Bernard Eales possibly be innocent? Or is there a darker explanation? These are the questions you'll find yourself asking while reading Haus' breakneck-paced plot.

As a fellow Canadian author, I must bow to Illona Haus' firm grasp of forensics, pathology and crime scene investigation, as well as her expertly carved character development and pacing. Kay Delaney comes across as feisty, smart but jaded, while her partner Finn has enough uncertainty to keep him real, and not just another hotshot cop character.

What I liked most about Blue Mercy was that there were enough twists and turns to keep me satisfied and questioning my own predictions. For an avid mystery reader and a mystery writer, this is hard to come by. Too many plots are predictable and tame compared to Haus' Blue Mercy. She has added a potpourri of fascinating characters to a steaming cauldron of murder, resulting in a book that is appetizing and fresh.

Kudos, Illona! Fantastic, frenetic fun! Can't wait to read the next one.

5 out of 5 stars Wow........2006-09-14

I can't believe this is a debut novel. It was amazing.

I guessed who done it the minute the author introduced him but I simply had to keep reading. I was totally enthralled and captivated by Kay and Finn and how the story unfolded.

This book is totally worth your time - the author put a ton of research into this book and wrote a thrilling novel. Can't wait to read the second one!

4 out of 5 stars homicide history.......2006-06-25

Kay Delaney is a homicide detective in Baltimore - trying to survive the guilt of losing her partner to a violent criminal - despite barely surviving it herself. When her boss gives her the case of the death of a witness to the crimes of Kay's incarcerated attacker, Kay is given the opportunity to get back in the swing of things. When it appears that the wrong man is in jail, Kay, despite her misgivings and personal feelings, searches for information to find the real killer. A good storyline, gripping suspense. I have to admit that the sequel, BLUE VALOR, didn't manage to hold my attention as well and only read half of the book.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best police procedurals in 2005........2006-02-06

If you're a fan of gritty realism in your cop stories, you will love Blue Mercy by Illona Haus. This debut novel is stunning in its depth and the sense of being there it invokes. Illona drove along with the Baltimore PD during several night patrols and the details show in this taut, exciting story about Detective Kay Delaney who has to find the truth behind her partner's death and the death of a witness who was supposed to help them convict his killer. The truth is much more than she ever imagined and it will take her to a very dark place before the end. This is one of the best books I have read in a long time. And I hope it's the first in a long series. Kay Delaney is a hero worth investing in. A novel that is not to be missed.

5 out of 5 stars A Journey Worth Taking!.......2001-01-15

This book made me laugh (I loved the author's "mental notes") and it made me cry (little Christian's teeth marks)! It opened my eyes to realize that God's grace and mercy are gifts worth sharing with all of my friends and acquaintances, and gifts not to be taken for granted. This book shows how God is with us in every rise and every fall in our lives, and how He is beside us even when we don't realize it. Thank you Sheila for a great book! (please note: I read it straight through...I just couldn't put it down!)

5 out of 5 stars Deeply touched........2000-05-04

My wife recommended that I read this book, stating that she thought every one should. I was hesitant at first, but after laughing and then crying my way through it, I believe she's right. Everyone should. I was deeply touched and reminded again of the importance of all the relationships around me, not just the one's that make me feel good. Of the need to look below the surface to find the true person. Thanks to God for using Eleanor and Sheila to remind me of what is really important in life - others.

After a renowned scholar is bludgeoned to death among the scholarly stacks, an ambitious TV reporter links the case to the heist of a Spanish painting from a Miami museum and a killing in Mexico City. Annabel suspects that buried in the Library are secrets some people will do anything to keep silent–the secret of a rich man’s ambition, a researcher’s disappearance, and a mysterious diary of Christopher Columbus’s journey written five hundred years ago. . . .

              3 out of 5 stars Good concept.......2005-06-07

Murder at the Library of Congress by Margaret Truman is one of the Capital Crimes novel series. Annabel Lee, an ex-lawyer and a new art gallery owner, is invited to do an article over the long-lost Las Casas diaries in a magazine. Annabel, deciding to do the article, goes to the Library of Congress where she meets with Consuela, head of the Hispanic and Portuguese division, to find all the materials she needs to write the article. In between researching, she meets and interviews Michele Paul, a rude historian who has been trying to find the Las Casas diaries for years. His murder later that night puts a bump in Annabel Lee's plan to interview him some more and creates a whole new oppurtunity to investigate Paul's murder.

Truman's mystery novel is not one of mystery, as the plot shows indirectly who the murderer is and why this person murdered Michele Paul. Although not surprising, it is a let down at the end of the book when you find out that the person you were expecting murdered Michele Paul, really did murder him. Another thing that was destroyed in this book was word play. Whenever Truman used a popular saying that virtually everybody knows, she added either after or before the character said it "As the saying goes." Although not important, it makes the story a little less real and choppier as well. One good thing, however, is that the characters Truman used may not be like regular people, but are interesting and they keep you reading to see what happens to them in the end. The concept of the whole story is thrilling as well.

Truman made some mistakes that were costly to the book's storyline and appeal, but that was fixed with interesting and complex characters. As a whole the book was good, but not one to be remembered as a classic.

              2 out of 5 stars A Bit Silly.......2005-02-22

This book is an Annabel Smith murder mystery. Annabel, a curator of a museum of pre-Columbian art, has for some reason been asked to write a feature article about Christopher Columbus for a special issue of "Civilization," the magazine of the Library of Congress. When she shows up at the Hispanic section of the library to start her 2 months of research for the article, she meets a cast of characters, some nice, and some not-so-nice. Meanwhile, a second-rate painting of Columbus is stolen from an art museum in Miami. Is there a connection from the heist to the Library? There must be, or else this story would be dead in the water. Clues like a fellow researcher at the Library turning up dead draw Annabel into the investigation.

This is the kind of mystery in which the author lets us know the whereabouts and thoughts of everyone, including the bad guys, as we go along. She tells us up front 80%-90% of who is involved in the suspicious activities, so the real suspense is in waiting to see if Annabel will solve the mystery before it's too late, and in seeing how the pieces of the plot-line are finally all tied together. Though the story is told coherently, the details are far from realistic. It's hard to picture librarians and researchers with the personalities that Truman describes. Yes, academics can be a motley bunch of interesting people, but I've never met any who act like this. Truman has the Library intern working on a long-term project of cataloging 15 Cuban newspapers, hardly the work of an intern. The researchers, Annabel included, go about their work like journalists rather than academics, for instance, starting their projects with interviews with other researchers, in which they hope to catch a great quote. A big deal is made of some computer disks which Annabel discovers, and spends all night reading on her computer screen-whereas any experienced computer user, especially a former lawyer, would immediately hit "Print" upon finding such material, or at the very least, make a copy to the hard drive (which Annabel's laptop apparently didn't have, back in 1997 when the story is set). Overall, I found the plot weak and predictable, the dialogue inane, and the plausibility very low. Nevertheless, the story at least hangs together and can keep one's interest for a short while.

3 out of 5 stars The library is the star..........2005-01-05

One of the best parts about a Margaret Truman mystery is the insight into the Washington DC institutions that are featured in her books. Murder in the Library of Congress is no exception, and we get a fascinating look inside this venerable but widely overlooked treasure.

Former lawyer and current art gallery owner, Annabel Reed-Smith, takes a two month sabbatical from her gallery to write an article that will appear in the Library of Congress magazine, Civilization. The article will be about Columbus' friend and colleague, Bartolome' Las Casas. Reed-Smith plans to spend two months in the Library of Congress doing research for this article. Many experts believe that Las Casas kept diaries and even a treasure map from the three voyages he made with Columbus. But many people searching for these diaries have met with tragic fates. Almost as soon as Annabel arrives at the library, she discovers the body of the number one Las Casas expert in the world. Unfortunately, he's been murdered. Also, 8 years prior to this, another Las Casas expert (who also worked at the library) vanished without a trace. Annabel quickly becomes immersed in trying to solve these mysteries.

While the premise of the plot is plausible, how Annabel seems to always be at the center of things is not. She is consulted by the police, asked to examine possible clues, and kept up to date on the investigation. This is the Washington DC Metro Police, not Mayberry RFD. Also, Annabel's perfect life is just a little too nauseating.

Still, the star of this book is the Library of Congress. She gives both a thumbnail sketch of its history, as well as procedures of operation today. After reading Murder in the Library of Congress, I'll definitely put it on my list of places to visit during my next trip to Washington.

4 out of 5 stars Great Mystery, Deep respect for Libraries.......2004-09-11

Murder at the Library of Congress, by Margaret Truman (November 1, 1999)

Margaret Truman continues her series of excellent murder mysteries set in well known venues in our nation's capitol.

A pre-eminent researcher on Columbus is murdered in the Library of Congress. As the plot unfolds, the number of suspects multiplies--it seems everyone wanted him dead! We learn about the black market in antiquities, and related tax scams. Drug money, violence, and multiple murders all make an appearance, as does comic relief, in the form of one of the most inept art thieves ever created--makes Inspector Cluseau look suave in comparison.

As usual, her settings are perfectly blended with her characters and plot. It is great to see a mystery writer showing deep respect for books, libraries, and the librarians who make sure the books are in the libraries (among many other tasks--if you've ever wondered what librarians do, you'll learn through this book).

The only problem was with the technology. For some reason, everyone thought it was perfectly normal for it to take hours on end to copy three computer disks--I had to check the copyright to be sure I wasn't imposing modern standards, but no, its 1999--ever since DOS it only takes a few minutes to copy five floppies. Obviously, there was something else going on, but none of the characters raised the remotest hint of suspicion. In fact, the "good guy" heroine also had to stay up all night to copy just small sections of these very same disks. Even in the good old DOS days, there was a copy disk command which would have accomplished this function in seconds, not hours!

To her credit, Truman does give us an explanation, and it ends up being the key to unlock the solution to the crime(s), but the reader knew it long before anyone in the book. I found this totally frustrating for the entire last quarter of the book.

4 out of 5 stars Easy to read.......2004-06-30

I listened to part of this mystery on the second of two audio cassettes. The first cassette was defective and had been discarded by the library. So, I read the first half. The hardbound version is really nicely printed, with big print and big margins. This was my first experience with Ms. Truman. Guess what. I didn't even know she was Harry's daughter!

Truman did a good job of joining the Columbus-Las Casas angle with the mystery story. Some of the library people didn't really seem to have much character, like Sue and Consuela. Walter Munsch, one of the bad guys, was a gas. Tell me: Are you going to walk around a Mexican brothel with a couple of thousand $ cash in your pocket? Munsch did. No wonder his life span was short. How did he even live that long?

I had a hard time empathizing with Dolores, who fell in love with Michelle Paul and then murdered him. If Paul was such a jerk, and everyone else thought so, how could she have loved him? Well, I guess it didn't last, the love, that is.

Does David Driscoll get off scot free, then? It's not really clear.

Anyway, Margaret Truman is definitely worth trying out. I have another one I'm going to start soon. Probably take only a day or two to finish it, because she's easy reading. Diximus.
