Book Description
When news came that there was trouble back in Texas . . . Holt McKettrick left a mail-order bride and his family on the spot!
And he never looked back. He just prayed he'd be in time to save the man who had raised him as a son and keep his best friend from the gallows. He knew he'd encounter rustlers, scoundrels and thieves. But he'd never expected to find a woman like Lorelei Fellows.
Setting fire to her wedding dress in the town square probably wasn't the best way to stand her ground.
But Lorelei had had enough. She was sick of men and their schemes. All she wanted was to stake her claim on her own little piece of Texas. And with Holt McKettrick as a neighbor, things were beginning to look up. The man was a straight shooter with a strong will, a steady aim and a hungry heart.

I know it's a trilogy...but there is a 4th book about an out of wedlock child! Such a good story! If you love cowboys, romance, family and the old west...you'll love it as much as I did.
McKettrick's Choice.......2007-07-15
Great plot and I enjoyed the book . I am loaning it to my 91 year old mother to read.
McKettricks Choice.......2007-07-05
Very ggod book liked all of the characters. She is one of my favorite authors. I have read all in the series and have been very happy with them all.
Miller is a Great storyteller.......2007-06-20
I have just finished all 3 of the books in this newest trilogy of Miller's. She continues to write spellbinding books!! All thru this set, I could see, hear & smell the ppl, places & surroundings. I doubt that I will ever get to Arizona in person, but thru her books, I can go there anytime & really feel as tho I've been there!! I am a big fan of Miller's & have been for years-- She still has that magickal touch!! Plus, those McKettrick men are real men--sexy gentlemen!! Whew!!
WONDERFUL ENDING to a WONDERFUL SERIES..............2007-06-20
THIS WAS A WONDERFUL BOOK. The story was sweet, interesting and laugh out loud funny. Miller hit one out of the park with this one! I found it interesting that Holt seemed to have sub-story lines throughout this serious but HE actually was one of the first McKettrick men we meet and the only brother that has had a pretty consistant storyline and presence in all 4 books. SO, it was fitting this series ended with him. A few reviewers complained that Holt's personality was not well represented here, that he was normally very soft hearted with the women. That is not actually true if you remember he was the one that tormented and harrassed poor Emmeline in the first book. So, I thought he was pretty consistant throughout the series. I also thought it was nice that she had Rafe in this one. It was a full circle moment. The seris began with these two brothers as enemies and ended with them together.... I'm sad I've read them all now.

4th Book in the Liam Rhenford/Faniulh Series.......2002-07-04
In this book, Liam leaves the town of Southwark to investigate crimes on the court circuit in an official capacity as one of the Duke's Quaestors. His first town involves two capital crimes: A brother and his wife charged with conjuring a demon to kill his brother and a wizard found dead in his bed with a hideous smile stretched across his face. Liam is able to solve the crimes and the court travels to the next city. But, as they travel, Liam begins to feel that all is not right in the court. His fellow Quaestor, in particular, is acting suspiciously. Before Liam knows it, he is accused and convicted of summoning a demon to kill the Duke's Aedile! How Liam solves the mystery and saves himself is an action pacted adventure that you won't want to miss!
Once again, Daniel Hood has used superb characterization and wonderfully evocative language to bring his fantasy world to life. The characters are very three-dimensional and are normal people with strengths and weaknesses. This book stands alone (and Hood does a splendid job at giving new readers a quick synopsis of previous adventures when necessary), but will reward dedicated fans with more fascinating glimpses into Liam Rhenford's cloudy past. Take the time to find and buy this book - you will love it!
it was great.......2001-06-11
I love the Liam rhenford series. liam is a queator which is like a police detective and solves a case adn gets arrested and thrown into the dungeon, but saves the world from an evil demon. yay. i hope more buy his books so that manuscript on Hood's shelf doesn't get really dusty.
Hood does for Fantasy what Asimov did for SF.......1999-07-25
A legitimate puzzler whodunnit in a fantasy realm? At first glance, preposterous. It would be too difficult to avoid cheating. Which is what they said of mysteries in Science Fiction before Asimov showed how it could be done. Daniel Hood has pulled off the equivalent feat with his novels of Liam Rhenford, crafting fully satisfying mysteries in a detailed and vivid Fantasy realm. I should confess--I first discovered these stories when the publisher sent me a copy of Beggar's Banquet for review (not understanding that I do not do SF&F reviews). I was first intrigued, then hooked, then wowed. I spent my own money on the other two novels in print, will buy the fourth (actually the 2nd) if it becomes available again, and will snap up those that follow.
Expanding the world of Hood.......1999-06-15
Daniel Hood again succeeds in creating a world which is as fascinating as it is accessible. Hood's talent lies in making fantasy meet reality - his characters are accessable, his settings imaginative, his tales spellbinding but never beyond the grasp of reality. It is easy to imagine oneself inside the story, riding alongside Liam and his hilariously humorless "sidekick," Fanuilh.
Most importantly, each successive novel builds on the previous and encourages frequent re-reads, but doesn't necessitate the new reader to buy the set. Pick one up. You'll soon want them all!
Have Dragon, Will Travel.......1998-03-11
Dan Hood has created a wonderful cast of characters that resurface anew in this fourth book of the series. Liam Rhenford and his dragon familiar are "on the road" for a bright new change of pace, and the action and intrigue make for a compelling read. I missed the banter between Liam and his friend Coeccious, but enjoyed the expansion of characters and settings within the wonderfully intersting fantasy world created by Dan Hood. High Recommended.

Book Description
A country Eden blooms with murder
Swevenings village is pretty as a picture, but its secrets are ugly; and its gentry dread the publication of Sir Harold Lacklander's memoirs. When one of them is murdered, Inspector Roderick Alleyn's investigation takes him through petty vendettas, an ex-commander's blend of whiskey and archery, and cocktails on the lawn with a femme fatale. But the motive he's angling for lies even deeper than the trout stream beneath the rustic bridge...
Customer Reviews:
Dissapointed.......2005-08-28
I blame the person who wrote a review for: Artists in crime, for my intense dissapointment. Marsh's work was compared favorably to A. Christie in that review. How sadly not true for me. I enjoy Christie but Marsh's silly phrases and characters, incomprehensible words even by the aid of a dictionary (tarradiddle, shooting stool), gushing old fashioned emotionality and naivity, do not appeal to me. I've read two books by Marsh. I hurried through the end of both to get rid of the "oh so boring" characters not because I was so excited over who the killer was. A dissapointing ending to say the least. "A do not read" is my opinion.
Classic example of the cozy mystery.......2005-08-23
Swevenings is a post card pretty little English village. The cottages are, with two known exceptions, tidy. The villagers are happy and like things just the way they are. Lord and Lady Lacklander are respected and admired. Then, suddenly after the death of the old lord things get messy. It turns out that Swevenings may look like heaven but is actually hiding a very painful and ugly secret, one that the old lord wanted exposed and one that costs his best friend his life.
You have the sensible nurse, the village drunk, the not crazy at all eccentric, the grande dame, the cloying young lovers and of course the bleached blonde outsider. Into this mix comes our handsome detective. He's not a flashy genius or a talented amateur. He's a cop, albeit one with a distinguished family background. His humor is gentle, his habits are unremarkable. He just keeps plugging away until he solves this case becuase it's his job and becuase the crime offends his sense of decency.
Scales of Justice is classic example of the cozy msystery and it pretty much unrolls the way you'd expect it to. By the end of the book things have been set right and life in Swevenings goes back to the bland sweetness of before. It's a pleasant way to spend a few hours.
Of Fish, Cats--And Murder.......2005-02-03
Swevenings is an isolated and insular English district where nothing unpleasant ever seems to happen--until the celebrated Lord Lacklander, on his death bed, passes his memoirs into the hands of Col. Cartarette. And when Col. Cartarette is found unexpectedly murdered on the banks of the Chyne River, Inspector Roderick Alleyn of Scotland Yard must determine whether foul play arises from an unknown explosive in Lacklander's memoirs or from a less obvious but no less lethal source.
As is often the case with Marsh, the beauty of the SCALES OF JUSTICE lies not so much in the unfolding plot as it does in the characters and their setting, and Swevenings and the Chyne Valley offers her tremendous scope, ranging from the formidable Lady Lacklander to the eccentrically cat-happy Mr. Danberry-Phinn to the alcoholic archer Commander Syce. Among her most interesting creations here is Nurse Kettle, a commonsense if excessively arch woman whose pleasing personality actually tempts Alleyn's sidekick Fox to reconsider his bachelor state!
Marsh often writes in such a way as to allow the reader to anticipate the killer, but such is not the case with SCALES OF JUSTICE, and many will find the means of the crime ingenious and the solution startling, with both a legendary fish locally known as "The Old 'Un" and the wandering feline Thomasina Twitchett providing unexpected clues along the way. A thoroughly enjoyable outing from start to finish.
GFT, Amazon Reviewer
Good, but Marsh has done better.......2000-06-21
I really enjoy Marsh's mysteries, and this one was no exception, in that there was a clever plot with a really devious method of committing murder. However, the characters in this book were not as compelling to me as ones from previous books (_When in Rome_, _Death in a White Tie_, etc.). Still, a very enjoyable read, and a great way to pass the time.
Classic English mystery.......1997-11-28
English countryside, aristocratic detective, quirky characters, humor -- what more does one want. This was the first Inspector Alleyn I've read and the best so far.

Book Description
"In recent years, there have been an increasing number of good books for big people on the subject of plus-size fashions, health, and self-esteem at any size, and how to survive as a larger person in our fatphobic culture. But not until now has anyone documented so well the legal and ethical factors that place drastic limitations on the lives of so many of our citizens every day - as well as some of the remedies."----William J. Fabrey, Director, Council on Size & Weight Discrimination
Weight is a hot topic. It arouses fear, disgust, and discrimination. This long-neglected area of legal concern affects the rights of a growing number of Americans on a daily basis.
What rights do fat people have? Are parents open to legal attack if their child is fat? Can employers discriminate? Should disability laws apply to fat people? Sondra Solovay documents cases of illegal hiring practices, workplace bias, harassment, unfair treatment, medical malpractice, and denial of public access resulting from weight-related prejudice. Telling the fascinating human stories behind precedent-setting cases and international headlines, she concludes with hopeful profiles of everyday people successfully fighting weight-based discrimination.
A landmark piece of research, TIPPING THE SCALES OF JUSTICE meets an urgent need for a text for libraries and college and graduate courses. It also provides a vital tool of legal scholarship regarding this important civil rights issue. Solovay argues that fighting weight-based discrimination is not just a concern for the courts or a problem for fat people, but a necessary goal of any just society.

Scales Tipped.......2006-08-01
This book is very helpful and has been cited by numerous authors.Great book!
Simultaneously heartbreaking, infuriating, & hope-provoking.......2005-06-21
The quiet, measured, dignified prose style of the author, a sort of removed reportage, makes the horrors of discrimination in education, health-care, social life, employment, the world of entertainment, and so forth all the more starkly ugly, cruel, dangerous, and damaging. The damage, however, is not confined to those fat people who are so viciously discriminated against. It extends to almost everyone who is infected with fear and hatred of fat, everyone who would rather be blind or deaf or lose a limb than be fat, everyone who succombs to the blandishments of a greedy, fear-mongering, prejudice-supporing bariatric industry. In other words, we're all in this together and we've all got to get out of it together. And the legal considerations Solovay brings to our attention, the suggestions she makes about extending legal coverages against discrimination already in place, and the compassion she displays for victims make this book one of the important beginnings for recovery from anti-fat hysteria. Thank you for this book.
Another left-wing political rant from Berkeley.......2002-06-28
Sondra Solovay is a lawyer, author, lesbian, feminist, Berkeley-resident and obese person. Tipping the Scales of Justice is Sondra's activist war-cry describing how disenfranchised obese individuals are in American society. Sondra's personal politics come out in this book as she complains that "fat" people deserve to be accommodated for in every way imaginable. Sondra loves statistics and this book is full of them. Sondra shows that thin women make more money than fat women. Thin women are selected for jury duty more often than fat women, (so what? does anybody actually like jury duty?) She even goes so far as to label obesity descriminiation as the civil-rights issue of the century. This book attempts to deal with sensitive issues of teasing and hurt feelings but comes off as a long political rant about how everyone should cater to her because she's overweight. There are better books about the subject, such as those written for the clinical psychology field regarding female body image.
Comprehensive, but Thin on Authority.......2000-11-11
In perhaps the first and only authoritative book on fat prejudice, attorney Sondra Solovay paints a disturbing picture of widespread mistreatment of the obese and urges extension of current law to remedy these problems. Proclaiming "fat discrimination" as the civil rights issue of the millennium, she calls for increased legal protection, detailing a litany of abuse afflicted on fat people by peers, teachers, employers, and even judges. She disputes the prevailing notion that fat people's size is their own fault, saying scientific evidence shows that obesity is not within the individual's control. Because body size may be immutable and not reflective of a person's abilities, she argues that anti-discrimination law should apply. She touts progress against fat discrimination, including laws passed in Michigan and California that specifically prohibit discrimination on the basis of weight in employment and housing.
The author recommends applying disability laws to the obese, a controversial stance which puts her at odds with other so-called fat-rights advocates who resist using the disabled label. After examining several cases involving the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, she concludes that the courts' treatment of larger-sized people under these laws too often is inconsistent, confused, and tainted by fat prejudice. She proposes a clearer, more logical way of categorizing and analyzing these cases, and reiterates how de-stigmatizing obesity helps correct pervasive misperceptions of fat people's abilities.
The book's strength lies in its focus on education and reform and the human face put on the problem of fat prejudice. However, even the author's extensive use of footnotes can't compensate for the dearth of legal materials involving weight discrimination. The appendices list organizations devoted to fat-rights advocacy, recommended readings, samples of anti-discrimination laws and excerpts from the ADA. But the paucity of published opinions reflects the reason why the book is a "tool of legal scholarship" as opposed to a "handbook" -- the still novel issue remains largely confined to academia and talks shows, not the actual practice of law. In our progressively heavier society, fat people may be closer to tipping the scales as the majority, but one wonders whether protection against fat prejudice will ever become the prevailing legal norm.
Spectacular ! Revolutionary! Excellent!.......2000-02-22
Tipping The Scales of Justice is a very well written examination of the legal and personal issues surrounding weight based discrimination. Ms. Solovay touches on all the relevant issues with clarity and insight, born out of a devotion to Justice and the desire to make this issue understood to all who read about it. She is a passionate activist and a marvelous writer. Without a doubt this book will stand the test of time as a solidly researched, superbly written book. Congratulations, Ms. Solovay!

Cecrle also teaches you the difference between forgiveness and reconciliation-forgiveness is not forgetting, it is not about the painful emotions going away, and it is not conditional on an apology from the offender. In the final chapters, Cecrle discusses repentance, trustworthiness, whether or not we are a product of our environment, and how to change our thoughts, words, and actions. Just as it takes two to create a conflict, all parties involved must also be willing to take steps toward a peaceful resolution. Book Description
Recent revisionist history has questioned the degree of social change attibutable to the French Revolution. In Balancing the Scales of Justice, Anthony Crubaugh tests this claim by examining the effects of revolutionary changes in local justice on the inhabitants of one region in rural France.
Crubaugh illuminates two poorly understood institutions in eighteenth-century France: seigneurial justice and the revolutionary justice of the peace. He finds that justice was typically slow and expensive in the lords' courts, thus making it difficult for rural inhabitants to benefit from official channels of justice. By contrast, revolutionary reforms gave people the opportunity to submit quarrels to trusted and elected justices of the peace who adjudicated disputes quickly and inexpensively.
By juxtaposing seigneurial justice in the ancien régime with the institution of the justice of the peace after 1789, Crubaugh highlights how revolutionary changes in the system of dispute resolution profoundly affected members of rural French society and their relations with the French state. Over time rural dwellers came to accept the primacy of the state in resolving disputes, and the state thereby partially achieved its long-standing goal of penetrating rural areas.
