Book Description

Emma sees naked people (not necessarily a bad thing!)

Emma Hutch's upscale Manhattan clients call her the "Good Witch." Her uncanny telepathic abilities enable her to plant images into unsuspecting minds, which has made her New York's most successful professional matchmaker. After all, what bachelor, confirmed or otherwise, could deny his true destiny when the woman he can't seem to stop thinking about suddenly appears right in front of him? Now an all-too-perfect blonde socialite needs Emma's help to snare the most eligible single man in the city -- all in a day's work for the Good Witch.

Except William Dearborn -- visual artist, software genius, total hunk, and dedicated hedonist -- is not so easily snared. And he's becoming a little too interested in the desperate matchmaking sorceress who's been following him all around town incognito. Emma doesn't have to be psychic to know what's going on in his mind. William's having very wicked thoughts indeed about the Good Witch . . . and Emma likes it! But she's got to resist his special brand of magic . . . or else her witchy career is going up in flames.

3 out of 5 stars A witty, light-hearted read.......2007-04-17

I bought this book on an impulse - it looked like a fun, amusing and light-hearted read. And I wasn't wrong, as I was smiling with nearly every page.

Emma is very likeable for a witch, and one can easily empathize with her as she struggles to strike a balance in her life - using her power scrupulously to make a living, doing something about her non-existent love life and helping those near and dear. I love her relationship and interaction with her best friend, Victor. Her love interest, William, however, isn't as well-developed a character as Emma, hence he isn't very interesting and I can't feel for him.

There are too many side-plots which distract the story - the man in the park, the embezzlement and the villain, and Emma's countless rescue of the hapless Hoff and Susan, which by far irritates me the most. There should have been more focus on Emma and William.

All in all, a light, entertaining read.

3 out of 5 stars Hexy.......2006-11-01

Valerie Frankel's heroine Emma Hutch is surprisingly believable and utterly captivating - a good witch with orange eyes and a rare gift- but becomes increasingly unbelievable because she is SO utterly gorgeous and a super-sexual dynamo. The story itself got campier and more over the top silly with the half-baked corporate embezzlement storyline, lashings of real life celebrities thrown in the mix (in unflattering ways). Not to mention happy endings for everyone. New York came across well in all its goofy denizened, luminous glory and the supporting characters are fun. I just got bored with Emma's romance with boring William Dearborne. And this was a short book!

5 out of 5 stars I was laughing out loud in the library.......2006-04-29

Emma Hutch thinks of herself as a good witch. She helps women find true love--or at least to get a date with the man of their current dreams--by placing a psych picture of the woman in the man's mind. The man assumes he's having sexy thoughts and--voila, a date. As clients go, Daphne Wittfield is no prize, but she's attractive, motivated, and she'll pay Emma's price. Which is handy since Emma is about to lose her much-loved New York apartment. Daphne wants a date with a sexy software billionaire and Emma intends to oblige. No matter how attractive she finds William Dearborn.

Emma's psychic power complicates her life in a number of ways but one of the worst is how it affects her sexually. Every man she dates ends up running--and the latest date finally helps her figure out why when he admits to seeing erotic visions of--William Dearborn. There's a chance for another match, but not before Emma finds herself in trouble with a dangerous accountant.

Author Valerie Frankel combines a touch of magic, chick-lit circles of friends, and a deft touch of humor to create an engaging story. I was reading this book at a library--and embarassed myself by laughing out loud twice. Librarians may not be as tough on noise as they once were, but I still wasn't a favorite. Emma makes a great heroine with her combination of self-doubt, fear, and weird self-confidence all wrapped into one package. William Dearborn isn't on the stage much, but Frankel makes the most of what time she gives him. The story, though, is really about Emma and her friends.

One weakness in the story--the subplot about corporate embezzlement never quite came together. Still, HEX AND THE SINGLE GIRL is a lot of fun, well written, and definitely an enjoyable read.

5 out of 5 stars Wicked!.......2006-04-21

This is my first Valerie Frankel book. If Hex is any indication of what I can expect from her backlist, I've got some books to buy. The characters were complex, and the plot was more complicated than most novels in this genre, which I, for one, appreciated. Emma, the main character, and Liam, the hero, had some red hot sex scenes (also appreciated). Overall, an enjoyable, laugh riot with surprises all along the way. Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Witchy woman.......2006-04-20

For some reason most of Valerie Frankel's books have such a great plot and characters, yet I get a little bit bored while reading it. I did think this was a cute story and I liked most of the characters, yet there was so much going on at once that it was hard to follow. It was enjoyable since I like to read paranormal chick lit like Shanna Swendson's books (something to look at if you liked this book).

London detective Thomas Pitt is investigating the murder of a junior diplomat by a notorious Egyptian woman and her lover, a senior Cabinet minister involved in negotiating the conflict between Egypt's cotton growers and England's textile industry. Lovat, the diplomat, once served in Egypt, and to unravel the mystery of his death, Pitt travels to Alexandria, where he finds that the beautiful Ayesha Zakhari is not who she appears to be--and that Lovat's murder may be tied to an old crime which, if exposed, could set the Middle East aflame. While Pitt is in Egypt, his wife, Charlotte, occupies herself with a more mundane matter--the disappearance of a valet whose sister is a friend of the Pitt's housemaid. It's not long before the reader realizes the connection between the two crimes; meanwhile, Perry layers this smoothly plotted mystery with a fascinating history of Egypt in the days of the British Empire and the religious and economic tensions whose repercussions still resonate more than a century later. Perry, the author of two Victorian-era series (the other stars investigator William Monk), does her usual fine job of bringing the colorful time period alive, helped along by the details of domestic life provided by her protagonists' wives, interesting and accomplished women who have lately played all but equal roles in solving their husbands' cases. --Jane Adams

    Book Description

In the first gray of a mid-September morning, Thomas Pitt, mainstay of Her Majesty's Special Branch, is summoned to Connaught Square mansion where the body of a junior diplomat lies huddled in a wheelbarrow. Nearby stands the tenant of the house, the beautiful and notorious Egyptian woman Ayesha Zakhari, who falls under the shadow of suspicion. Pitt's orders, emanating from Prime Minister Gladstone himself, are to protect-at all costs-the good name of the third person in the garden: senior cabinet minister Saville Ryerson. This distinguished public servant, whispered to be Ayesha's lover, insists that she is as innocent as he is himself. Could it be true?

In the dead man's less-than-stellar reputation, Pitt finds hope. But in ancient Alexandria, where the victim was once an army officer, hope grows dim. For there, Pitt receives intimations of deadly entanglements stretching from Egyptian cotton fields to Manchester cotton mills, from the noxious London slum known as Seven Dials to the madhouse called Bedlam.

Meanwhile, in a packed courtroom at the Old Bailey, time is ticking away for Ayesha and Saville. With Pitt and his clients racing against the hangman, the trial reaches its pulse-pumping climax.

Millions of readers who love New York Times bestselling author Anne Perry and her novels cherish the magical passport she provides into the age of Victoria at its brilliant zenith. It was an unforgettable time when rich and powerful Englishmen contrived to make themselves even richer and more powerful. When Englishwomen were the glittering ornaments of an opulent society, rolling over cobblestones in their costly carriages, entertaining the chosen few in their elegant drawing rooms. Thoughts of the poor, rotting in London slums and in British dominions east and west of Suez, seldom troubled this prideful aristocracy. But a shocking murder was soon to remind them of their ever-present vulnerability.

In the first gray of a mid-September morning, Thomas Pitt, mainstay of Her Majesty's Special Branch, is summoned to Connaught Square mansion where the body of a junior diplomat lies huddled in a wheelbarrow. 5 out of 5 stars A delightful mystery........2007-03-13

Classic murder mysteries rely heavily for both their effectiveness and their appeal on a "slight of hands," and one of the tricks is a set of characters in whom one can become interested enough to relate to them in some way. Another is to create an ambiance that arrests the attention and keeps it. Anne Perry has a great knack for creating both memorable characters and an interesting stage on which they play out their roles in the story.

Her Seven Dials is an amazing recreation of Victorian England in the earlier days of the queen's reign. The era is young yet, and the political turmoil that will set the stage for World War I and the social changes it brings is just beginning. Some of the older characters can remember the Napoleon wars. Thomas and Charlotte Pitt are paradigms of lower middle class life in the period, with their fate in the hands of Thomas's mentor in the Secret Service, Victor Narroway, and their maid servant and her beau, Samuel Tellman, in theirs. The interactions among all of the characters gives as much a feeling for the period as does the mention of hansom cabs, harnesses, and horse manure in the streets. Even the yellow skies and the chocking, smog filled London streets is classic for the era.

Perry's characters are charming and detailed, each a work of art in them selves. The maidservant is spunky, savvy and sensitive, used to the school of hard knocks, and her friend Tellman is gruff, masculine in an "old fashioned" sort of way, and smarts under the unfairness of social inequality and the period's newly arising sense of social empowerment. The stiff, formal society in which Charlotte Pitt grew up and still has family is faced with an erosion of their privileges and with a growing sense that they are on the threshold of major change. They are like dinosaurs waiting for the asteroid to strike them.

All of this sets the background for a puzzling murder of a man who should not really have been where he was at all and certainly not dead. The central characters push forward in an attempt to make sense of the confusing, almost irrational facts. It is this irrationality that is part of the slight of hands. Eventually Pitt must go to Egypt to unravel the mystery by back tracking the murdered man and his alleged murderess.

The venue in Egypt is Alexandria, a city to which I have been about three or four times. The descriptions of Victorian Alexandria might still easily pass for today, although the city today is more Western than Cairo and much more so than Thebes. The description of the rug suq was definitely memorable. The quarrel that leads to a small riot in the book reminded me of the minor violence that occurred among men there and in Cairo in the few days before Sadat was assassinated. Like the brewing sense of political unrest in the book, here too, everyone felt the tension in the air; everyone knew that something was afoot, but no one knew what was about to happen. It was a very tense time, and so was Pitt's Egypt.

I can not for the life of me understand the author's description of malaquia, an Egyptian soup--which I refer to as "frog-pond"--made for special occasions, as "delicious." I found it slimy and green. The latter I could handle, the former I couldn't. The mention of the sound of what seemed like crickets to Pitt, also brings back memories. Actually the sound is not crickets but a similar one made by small frogs in the canals and on the banks of the Nile. It's very restful. All in all, Pitt's trip to Egypt was as memorable for me as for him.

    A delightful mystery.

    5 out of 5 stars Surprise Ending!.......2006-04-14

Very descriptive and historically accurate. You'll love her vivid pictures of Alexandria. Egypt comes alive. I'm a harsh critic but this work bowled me over.

    5 out of 5 stars Great mystery.......2005-09-11

Anne Perry doesn't disappoint in this recorded book. Read well, and easily one for the bookshelf.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, well-crafted story of murder in Victorian London.......2005-06-12

Thomas Pitt and his wife Charlotte have been at the center of many mysteries, many of which take them into the heart of the underworld of Victorian London. Nothing is ever as it seems on the surface, however, and it takes the married couple more than wits in order to solve a crime. The mystery which surrounds that in Seven Dials is no exception.

This time, it's a case of diplomacy, as a seemingly open-and shut-case occurs. Apparently, an Egyptian woman shot her lover in her back yard and then put it in a wheelbarrow in order to get rid of it. But it becomes increasingly clear to Pitt that Ayesha Zakhari, supposed mistress of a member of the Cabinet, is not the perpetrator of the crime, after all. For one, there is no blood on her white evening gown, and she was not strong enough to put the dead man into the wheelbarrow by herself. It soon comes out that cabinet member Saville Ryerson was at the scene of the crime not long after it occurred. Soon it becomes clear that the murder is linked to the riots that have been taking place at Manchester- where, incidentally, Ryerson is from.

Victor Narraway sends Thomas Pitt to Alexandria to find out more about Miss Zakhari- and he learns a number of interesting things about the relationship between the woman and the deceased man. Narraway, however, has a much deeper reason for sending Pitt away- the case is becomeing much more serious than anyone had suspected.

Unrelated is the case of Martin Garvie, manservant to a Mr. Garrick. When Martin goes missing, his sister Tilda enlists Gracie's help to find him. It soon becomes clear to Charlotte Pitt that this is no simple case of a dismissed valet; his master Mr. Garrick has also vanished mysteriously, apparently taking Martin with him. None of the other servants know where either man has gone, and no one really wants to talk about it, either. In addition, it seems that Mr. Garrick was a drunk who relied heavily upon his young valet for support. Charlotte and Gracie turn to Charlotte's great-aunt Vespasia Cumming-Gould, a well-known and liked aging socialite, who uses her circle of influence to investigate Mr. Garrick's father. This is an excellent mystery with lots of twists and turns, that had me guessing until the very end.

        Book Description

Reclusive tycoon, Sir Oswald Coote, and his melancholy wife, Lady Maria, have come upon the ideal plan to spice up their quiet lives. They'll host a lavish weekend party at Chimneys, their isolated estate, and invite only "bright young things". But the festive mood is clouded by doom. A practical joke involving seven clocks and a sleeping guest has ended in accidental death-and cause for alarm. For the guests may not be all that they appear. And as whispers of a strange club called Seven Dials echo through the halls of Chimneys, all hands will be pointing to murder....AUTHORBIO: Agatha Christie is the world's best-known mystery writer. Her books have sold over a billion copies in the English language and another billion in 44 foreign languages. She is the most widely published author of all time in any language, outsold only by the Bible and Shakespeare. Her writing career spanned more than half a century, during which she wrote 80 novels and short story collections, as well as 14 plays, one of which, The Mousetrap, is the longest-running play in history. Two of the characters she created, the brilliant little Belgian Hercule Poirot and the irrepressible and relentless Miss Marple, went on to become world-famous detectives. Both have been widely dramatized in feature films and made-for-TV movies. Agatha Christie also wrote romantic novels under the pseudonym Mary Westmacott. As well, she wrote four non-fiction books including an autobiography and an entertaining account of the many expeditions she shared with her archaeologist husband, Sir Max Mallowan. Agatha Christie died in 1976.

        Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars One of her older books and a bit dated now.......2007-02-04

Agatha is Agatha but this is a weak effort from today's perspective. It has the feeling of a gone by age of fops, lie abouts with good hearts, dashing young aristocrats with no money, etc. and so on. Suspect Brits would find it better--doesn't translate as well overseas.

4 out of 5 stars A Nice Enough Addition to the Previous Secret of Chimneys.......2005-07-09

The Seven Dials Mystery takes a few characters from the thriller/comedy Secret of Chimneys and finishes up their romantic storylines, as it were. The mystery itself is a bit silly and a bit fun. It takes Agatha Christie's usual secret society silliness and tweaks it a little while she, for a change, pooks fun at the genre of which she has been such a part in the twenties. The action bounces between three country homes and a club in London so that it never veers too far from territory the author is comfortable in. The character are, therefore, a little more stock than usual but she does get a chance to give Bundle (Lady Eileen Brent) a chance to shine that the character never quite got in the previous book. A slight, nice slice of summer reading.

5 out of 5 stars The Secret of Chimneys Part 2.......2004-01-27

THE SEVEN DIALS MYSTERY is set 4 years after THE SECRET OF CHIMNEYS (1929&1925) and also takes place in that 'Stately Home' Chimneys.

Lord Caterham has taken his family, including oldest daughter 'Bundle' AKA Lady Eileen, abroad in search of peace and quiet after all the excitement that had occured in THE SECRET OF CHIMNEYS. He has leased Chimneys to Sir Oswald and Lady Coote who have decided to have one last weekend party before their lease ended. The house is filled with 'bright young things' but one of the party, Gerry Wade has been a difficult guest in that he was consistently late to breakfast. That was bad enough but then he was found dead one morning.

After the Cootes moved out and the Caterhams returned, Bundle found herself bored with country life and decided to return to London. On the way she ran into (literally)a young man, his dying words to her "Seven Dials...tell....Jimmy Thesiger" set Bundle and her friends on the trail of a mystery.

Bundle and Bill Eversleigh (also in THE SECRET OF CHIMNEYS) are reunited as they try to solve the murders and the secret of the Seven Dials. False identities, red herrings and secret societies abound until Bundle and Bill, with the aid of Superintendent Battle resolve the mysteries.

This, like THE SECRET OF CHIMNEYS, is Agatha Christie a la P. G Wodehouse. Far from the serious mystery that Christie is famous for, this is a comedy with mystery overtones. If you like Wodehouse you'll like this book, but if you are looking for a serious puzzler look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars A TIMELESS MYSTERY VERY WELL READ.......2003-08-04

Arguably the most famous mystery writer in the world and, most likely, the most beloved, Agatha Christie's English language books have sold over a billion copies. Her total sales in numerous foreign languages also reach that enviable number.

Also an accomplished playwright, Ms. Christie's iconic drama "The Mousetrap" is one of the longest running plays in the history of the theatre. Her imagination knew no bounds nor did her energies.

Time has not diminished the unique quality of her work as is evident in "The Seven Dials Mystery" expertly read by Jenny Funnell.

With this story rather than Miss Marple or the eccentric Hercule Poirot our heroine is Lady Eileen "Bundle" Brent. An intended practical joke on Gerry Wade turned out not to be funny at all but murder. "Bundle" and her cohort Jimmy Thesiger are put to the test in trying to discover the meaning of seven clocks found at the murder scene. Their detective work leads them to a nightclub, the Seven Dials Club, which is a cover for a secret society.

What is "Bundle" to do now?

          Book Description

Lady Pearl Moreston would first sacrifice her virtue and live life as a chambermaid before she'd acquiesce to her stepmother's demands and wed overbred Lord Bellowsworth! In fact, posing as a maid is precisely what Pearl does to escape her fate -- a deception that could prove disastrous for the impetuous bluestocking. Luckily, Luke St. Clair comes to her rescue. Now here is a man worth losing one's innocence to: strong, dashing, daring, worldly...and nary a drop of noble blood in him!

Luke is intrigued by this minx who seems unusually knowing for her tender years...and whose intoxicating beauty makes him light-headed in her presence. But Luke is not the adventurer the winsome Pearl believes him to be. And though her soft, succulent lips are begging to be kissed, Luke is honor-bound to never reveal to her his true identity. Yet how long can passion's flames be restrained before two delightful deceivers are forced to drop their masks and surrender to the sweet, sensual fire?

3 out of 5 stars An easy way to pass weekend.......2005-08-18

I probably would not remember the characters from this book next week, but as a way to pass a weekend, this book will do. It has a plot that's easy to follow, but I really don't see what the next book could be about. There were no real second characters developing in this book. I love reading books with connected plots and I usually know which book is from which series, but I don't think I will be looking for the next one of this series specifically. I guess, if I see it, I will get it.

My advice, if there are other books on your bookshelf waiting to be read, read them first. Save this one for a lay-over at the airport or something.

4 out of 5 stars Good lighter read!.......2004-10-29

Every once in awhile I am in the mood for a lighter read - not so much intensity and drama. This book was one of those. The characters were easy to connect with and you felt the love between Luke and Pearl - which is very important for me a hopeless romantic!!Will be interesting to see how the other books in the series hold up?

4 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL, but only one in series worth reading.......2004-08-18

This book was a quick read, since the characters and plot were so nicely written. Pearl and Luke are two people who are perfect for each other and yet, due to stations in life, can never be together. I found Pearl so endearing and her passion about helping others is so contagious. Luke is someone who has suffered and yet risen to help others suffering. Both were easy to love and made this book a keeper. Unfortunately, the following books of the series drag endlessly and are not worth the time. So only read this book if you can restrain yourself from wondering what happens to Luke's best friend. I will save you the effort: think same exact plot but with no twists and undeveloped characters.

5 out of 5 stars This is a wonderful story.......2001-11-16

Ms Hiatt has written a wonderfully original story that will hold your attention. I read about 4 books a week so the ones like this keep coming back to memory. Luke and Pearl play off each other wonderfully. These two people obivously belong together. I like the way Pearl almost literally drags Luke to his hertige.

4 out of 5 stars Likable twist on the Robin Hood premise........2001-07-29

Lady Pearl Moreston is sick of her stepmother pressuring her to marrying before her 21st birthday. When she overhears that lady plotting a trap to enforce a betrothal, she decides on a radical plan: escape by becoming a servant.... This social reformer also wants a perspective on the life of a commoner. Pearl and her abigail work in the kitchens at a society party. When she is in danger of being recognized, she flees the scene in the company of Luke St. Clair. Luke is an intriguing person. His lodgings, though in the dangerous Seven Dials, are elegantly furnished. He is the Saint of Seven Dials, robbing the rich and giving much of the proceeds to the poor. They both have surprises in store, as Pearl investigates Luke's mysterious past and finds the astonishing truth....

Death in the Devil's Acre: When a dr. is found brutally murdered in the lurid section of London aptly named Devil's Acre, even its most hardened residents are stunned. But shock soon turns to horror when Inspector Pitt discovers three more bodies with the same gruesome calling card; a stab wound in the back and a rather inexpertly executed mutilation. As Pitt and his wife Charlotte race against time to find the killer, a trecherous mystery unfolds. And no one, not the lowest brand of ruffian or the most established aristocrat, will come out unscathed. The Hyde Park Headsman: Not since the bloody deeds of Jack the Ripper have Londoners felt such terror as that aroused by the gruesome beheadings in Hyde Park. And if newly promoted Police Superintendent Thomas Pitt does not quickly apperehend the perpetrator, he is likely to lose his own head, professionally speaking. Yet even with the help of Charlotte Pitt's subtle investigation, the sinister violence continues unchecked. And in a shocking turn of events that nearly convinces the pair of sleuths that they have met their match, the case proves to be Pitt's toughest ever.Seven Dials: Thomas Pitt, mainstay of Her Majesty's Special Branch, is summoned to Connaught Square mansion where the body of a jr. diplomat lies huddled in a wheelbarrow. Nearby stands the tenant of the house, the beautiful and notorious Egyptian woman Ayeasha Zakhari, who falls under the shadow of suspicion. Pitt's orders are to protect-at all costs-the good name of the third person in the garden; sr. cabinet minister Saville Ryerson. This distinguised public servant, whispered to be Ayesha's lover, insists that she is as innocent as Pitt himself is. Pitt's journey to uncover the truth takes him from the Egyptian cotton fields to the insidious London slum called Seven Dials, to a packed London courtroom where shocking secrets will at last be revealed.
