Book Description

Is oral reading important? "Absolutely," assert Michael Opitz and Timothy Rasinski, "so important that we must put it into perspective and use it in the most effective and efficient ways possible." Opitz and Rasinski have written this book to help teachers do just that. Their aim is to show where oral reading fits in the reading program and share twenty-five of the best strategies for helping children learn to read aloud.

Good-bye Round Robin is the first book of its kind, offering teachers a new alternative to traditional round robin reading - an outmoded practice that more often prohibits rather than facilitates the ability to read. The book is completely research based, demonstrating how to use oral reading to help students develop comprehension, share information, and discover effective reading strategies.

All of the activities are categorized and easy to locate. For each technique, the authors provide a grade level, description, teaching procedures, suggested children's literature, classroom scenarios, and additional ideas for extending the activity. A separate chapter on oral reading as a tool for assessment provides specific strategies and guidelines teachers can use along with many reproducible forms. There are also separate chapters on teaching struggling readers and working with parents.

According to the authors, silent reading should remain the mainstay of an effective reading program, but there are times when oral reading is also important. Children need both types of reading experiences to ensure that comprehension occurs. Following the strategies outlined in this book, preservice and inservice elementary teachers can be certain they are truly helping children meet this goal.

5 out of 5 stars Round Robin Review by Dr. Kimberly Tyson.......2006-11-02

I love this book because it offers easy-to-implement fluency strategies. A teacher I work with calls it her "Fluency Bible" and keeps it next to the guided reading area in the classroom. I give this book away to every school that I work with and every workshop I conduct on Reading Fluency! Easy to read - practical - strategy & research-based - it's the best!

This is a must have for each and every teacher out there. No student should be allowed to graduate and become certified in teaching without reading and responding to this book.

3 out of 5 stars There's a strategy to fit your teaching style!.......2000-05-11

Good-bye Round Robin contains 25 oral reading strategies that stay away from traditional round-robin reading. Included in each strategy description are sections where teachers explain how they use/manage that strategy, extentions on the strategy are provided, and book/poem titles are suggested. Many chapters include easy reference check lists that tell which strategies can be used to assess which skills, as well as record keeping check lists created specifically for that strategy....a real time saver. Having over 17 years teaching experience, it was reassuring to know that I stumbled upon some of the explained strategies in my career (and they're good). The book also gave me new strategies (and variations on old ones) that I can use in my middle school classroom. I recommend this book to starting teachers who are looking to add to their "tool belt" of skills, and to veteran teachers who are seeking effective, meaningful oral reading strategies.

5 out of 5 stars Great strategies for teaching children how to read!.......2000-03-30

Harris and Hodges (1995) define round-robin reading as "the outmoded practice of calling on students to read orally one after another." Allington (1984) goes on to note "...oral reading is a form of assessment or practice but often without a clearly developed, or delivered, instructional focus." Oral reading is important and the authors of this book share how to use oral reading in the most effective and efficient ways possible. This book provides effective oral reading strategies that teachers can use to best teach all children to read. The research-based information is well-organized and easy to read. For every oral reading strategy presented, the skills that each strategy helps children develop is given. In addition, for each oral reading strategy teaching suggestions, title suggestions, extensions, tips, and connections are listed. The "Involving Parents" chapter reviews ways that oral reading can be used at home and the "Guiding Assessment" chapter is devoted to oral reading as a tool for assessment and within that chapter one can find specific strategies and many reproducible forms. This book is a wonderful resource for teachers, tutors, and parents.

Book Description

Round Robin reunites readers with the Elm Creek Quilters in this poignant and heartwarming follow-up to The Quilter's Apprentice, Jennifer Chiaverini's acclaimed debut novel.

The Elm Creek Quilters have begun a round robin ... a quilt created by sewing concentric patchwork to a central block as it is passed around a circle of friends. Led by Sarah McClure, who came to Waterford, Pennsylvania, with her husband, Matt, a few years ago, the project is to be their gift to their beloved fellow quilter Sylvia Compson. But like the most delicate cross-stitch, their lives are held together by the most tenuous threads of happiness ... and they can unravel.

As each woman confronts a personal crisis, a painful truth, or a life-changing choice, the quilt serves as a symbol of the complex and enduring bonds between mothers and daughters, sisters and friends. In weaving together the harmonious, disparate pieces of their crazy-quilt lives, the Elm Creek Quilters come to realize that friendship is one of the most precious gifts we can give each other, and that love can strengthen understanding, lead to new beginnings, and illuminate our lives.

5 out of 5 stars I can relate........2006-07-10

Elm Creek Quilts novels have me hooked. I can't wait to start the next one each time to find out what is happening in the lives of the women in the story. I feel like I know each one of them and the details of guilds and stitch groups are so true to life. I can see my own life in the stories. It has renewed my enthusiasm for quilting again and to make sure I document each one. The history of the quilts and quiltmakers is the interesting part. How fun to hear about each quilter's life as they worked on the round robin quilt.

4 out of 5 stars A quilt as a reflection of light - Very like Amy Tan.......2006-05-22

I started reading Chiaverini's books with her Runaway Quilt book which I enjoyed immensely - this one was almost as good, but seemed quite different. It is about a group of women and their family, it is about everyday life, and how we deal with it. It is fascinating to read the complications which they go through, and they are not always sympathetic characters.

This is all based around their desire to make a round robin quilt to hang in the entrance hall of Elm Creek Manor for the summer camp quilters to see on their arrival. They decide to make it as a surprise for Sylvia, the owner of Elm Creek Manor and the quilting camp owner. She has a team of quilters who help her, and these are their stories, Judy, Sarah, Summer, and friends. They have to deal with teenage angst, their future, their past and resolution is not always easy.

It reminded me very much of Amy Tan's Joy Luck club - a story abotu women and their families and the problems they have, especially between generations and aspirations with the mother and daugther stories very often being revealed but not to each other.

The unfortunate thing, and the reason I did not give this a five, was I felt the outcome of the novel was just too pat. It seemed everything was resolved, not by the women and their efforts, but by Sylvia. It was not satisfying to me. All to soon and too suddenly their was a conclusion. In fact it made me think this had been written for film rather than book. It played out nicely for visual effect, and an easy conclusion.

Anyway, it was well worth reading and I will continue with the series but I much preferred the Runaway Quilt to this.

3 out of 5 stars Round Robin.......2005-09-23

I felt that this book lacked some of the charm that her other books had. Maybe that is because it had some really deep issues in it which brought up sad memories for me. It made me cry in the end. I have since read 2 other books in this series and I am not disappointed. Jennifer's writing is always real and my rating is strickly personal.

3 out of 5 stars Like the Art... Don't Get the Message - a review of "Round Robin".......2006-02-10

We've read a lot of Jack Kent (he was on my entering- kindergartener's summer reading list) and we like his work; but I have to say that for the first time I just didn't get it. I mean the artwork was cute and all, but I'm just not sure what the 'point' of the story is. [Ahhh, so many years in college wasted-LOL]

Here, afterall, is a little robin who eats himself into roundness. When the other birds fly south for the winter, he can't. Instead he hops south (with quite a few bumps involved). If this wasn't enough of a problem, his constant need to stop and eat slows him so much that winter overruns him. Caught in snow, he is almost caught by a fox; thus going from eating to being eaten. (Is this the message? Be slow and be gone?)

Well, when getting away from the fox, Round Robin discovers that he can fly. Apparently he has lost so much weight from exercising (hopping south) and not being able to find food in the snow that he's lightened up. [Is this the moral?]

So he arrives south and what does he do? He eats himself back to roundness. Then, of course, it is time to fly north again. Oh well... hop, hop.

Three Stars. I don't get it, but my children do like Round Robin.

4 out of 5 stars Round Robin a story of Tolerance.......2000-09-15

I was given this book by a collegue whose son recieved it through a book order at school. I reconized the author Jack Kent as being very good, and I was not disappointed when I read through the book myself. My Kindergarten students loved it. Round Robin was different than the other birds but completely accepted. No one laughed at him for being overweight, they just accepted him and waited for him to join them. The children liked the rhythm of the words and the humor involved with Round Robin's plight. This was a book they wanted me to read time and time again and I would dearly love a copy of my own.

Jonny Maxwell is a rapist, a murderer, and a thief who cuts a bloody swath across the Midwest after a breakout from Leavenworth. But he's also an ex- operative for Dominance Rain, an ultra-secret special ops team spawned by the CIA and the Defense Department. Pursuing him are Minnesota state and local cops, the Fugitive Investigative Strike Team, a supercharged cadre of U.S. marshals, and Dale Miller, his Rain teammate and formerly his best friend, who's been assigned to bring him in. Jonny's smart, tough, and ruthless, and Marcus Wynne's debut thriller, while short on narrative coherence, nuance, and character development, is long on weaponry, explosives, and testosterone. It's your basic chase movie dressed up as a thriller, and while the outcome is never in doubt, there are enough eviscerated bodies and exploding booby traps to keep the action moving until the last paragraph. Wynne throws in a little subplot involving a romance between a trash-talking Minneapolis lady detective and the taciturn hero trailing the man who taught him his tradecraft, but it hardly matters to the lovers or the reader. --Jane Adams

            5 out of 5 stars Raw-tough and hypnotic.......2006-03-16

The author having been a special operative gives you the authenticity you sense:"Been there, done that" The book is not based on some objective fantasy fabrication, but almost a "how to" manual that special ops people employ as a standard reflex mode of behavior.

            5 out of 5 stars A real page turner.......2005-09-13

No Other Option is the first novel I've read by Marcus Wynne. Bottom line: I will have no other option but to seek out more of his work. This was a great book. Wynne grabs you in the first few pages and does not let go. Wynne provides a solid cast of characters which provide good depth to the storyline. The story moves forward with pace - full of suspense, plot twists and virtually non-stop action as circumstances pit former friends and colleagues against each other in a battle of wits, determination and physical endurance. Admittedly, the chief antagonist is a ruthless, remorseless killer. Thus the story is not for the feint of heart. That said, this was a tough book to put down.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing What You Can Stumble Upon.......2004-10-16

I was at the airport and was getting ready to board my four hour flight when it occurred to me, I forgot to bring something to read. I hurried over to the news stand and did not have enough time to browse and picked up "No Other Option."

This book took me by complete surprised from the outset. It is packed with so much action and suspense, I had a hard time getting off the plane as I was about to finish. Jonny Maxwell is a hero gone bad and Dale Miller, his former partner, has been called upon by federal law enforcement to help find him.

With the help of an attractive cop in Minneapolis, Dale decides to ditch the federal boys and go looking for Maxwell himself.

Wynne is probably the best kept secret among fictional suspense writers out there. If you like lots of action and do not get turned off by explicit language and excessive violence, I'd strongly recommend this book.

            5 out of 5 stars Awesome book.......2004-09-19

This is the greatest book I've ever read. It goes more in depth into the mind of a special agent than any other book I've ever read. This is the perfect choice for the person who loves a suspense/ action thriller. I recommend that everyone reads this. You won't be able to put it down.

            4 out of 5 stars Action.......2004-05-04

A very good thriller that will keep you turning the pages and looking for the next work by this author.

              5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book.......2006-05-16

This book really encouraged me and strengthened my christian walk. It does a wonderful job of using everyday situations in life and demonstrating by example of how to walk in victory. I have already purchased copies for some other people who have started reading and are happy for the gift. The author does a great job of using scripture references and life experiences to direct the reader in how to praise the Lord in all type situations. Some of the life experiences chronicled in the publication are touching and 'real'. The book even serves as a 'how to' manual for those desiring to understand biblical praise and worship. My favorite chapter is 'A Yet Praise' where the reader is challenged to give God praise no matter how bleak or dismal life can be. I am encouraging some of my pastor friends to even use the book in bible class settings as well as for personal growth and development.
