Liked the Movie? Love the Book........2007-01-17
Yet another example of how a movie will have a tough go of giving a book true representation. Winston Groom is masterful at creating our sympathetic protagonist and you feel for him at every step of the way. But, the best part, and maybe the most important part, of the book is that you can't help but be right inside Gump's head. You're not just reading Gump, you begin to feel Gump when you turn each and every page. You're living Gump.
Do yourself a favor and try to forget the movie before you start reading this. But know that if you don't, Tom Hanks at least did Gump justice and having him in mind while you read isn't such a bad thing.
Interesting book but far from the movie .......2006-11-10
I guess when they say adapted it just means that they picked up the name "Forrest Gump". The movie character and the book character have probably only one thing in common , Forrest Gump is dumb guy but very lucky. This novel is very interesting in a different sort of way, gets really gross and very unbelievable sometimes but I guess thats ok.
Overall the quality of the book pages is good and worth being part of your collection.
Not the Forrest We Know! .......2006-11-08
I am one of those people who cry everytime Jenny dies in the movie.. but the book on the other hand is nothing of the sort! When my aunt encouraged me to read the book that it was 'lol' funny... I gave it a shot but really didn't believe it could be so. But this isn't the Forrest we have all come to love and know... this is a completely different Forrest.. a funny, awesome Forrest. If your expecting the movie you won't get what you want.. but if your looking for something great that is a great mood-picker-uper get this!
Forrest Gump. A Great book........2006-08-06
this book is one of the best. Winston Groom has one of the best imagination i have ever known. I saw the movie first...but i realized that my passion for the adventures of Forrest Gump was never ending, so i needed to buy the book. if i could, it would get 10 stars
the only book ive ever read that isnt as good as the movie.......2006-05-04
Dont get me wrong, this is a good book. But the movie was great. Maybe its cause I saw the movie first, but the movie seemed to capture the essence of Forrest Gump with a realistic plot and a few crazy and unbelievable circumstances, while the book was filled with crazy impossible situations that just made me laugh instead of getting to know the charecters.
I would recomend this book to anyone, but hopefully before you see the movie so that you can take a different look at it and learn about Forrest Gump that way instead of letting him take on the persona of Tom Hanks.

Really good recipes...and good quotes from one of my favorite characters, Forrest Gump
Bubba Gump Rules!.......2003-03-01
I bought this book for my Dad after we had a terrific experience at the Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. restaurant in Charleston, SC. My Dad is very ill and on oxygen, but the trip to the restaurant really perked him up. He loved the dish he had there, and the chef was kind enough to come out of the kitchen and tell Dad how to cook it! Although the book doesn't have that specific recipe, it has dozens of others just as good.
How to please a teenager!.......2001-09-27
We found this book at our local library and our teenage son immediately "locked on" to it. He loves Bubba Gump as well as the recipes in this book. He has taken such an interest in it that he has learned to cook from it. His favorite recipi is "Bubba's Beer-Batter Shrimp." He prepares it in a fondue pot and our entire family reaps the benifits. My husband and I prefer the "Shrimp and Feta Vermicelli." It adds a little adventure to cooking with shrimp. The variety of recipes in the book make it a "sure thing" for shrimp lovers.

The Movie Was Better.......2007-06-15
Groom seems to have no understanding of someone like Forrest. He just writes him like he's trying to make him sound stupid.
Plus, the narration done by an oaf is a lot better in a film than in a book... because you have to read him constantly.
It just looks like Groom used him as an excuse to be lazy in his writing.
The only good thing I got out of it is that I can relate to the black lady in the beginning a whole lot more.
This is the BOOK, not the Movie/DVD !!!!.......2006-05-31
I'm not sure how so many reviewers managed to mix up the two . . . anyway, the nature and tone of the book are vastly different (and in my mind, much more entertaining) than that of the movie. Winston Groom's "Gump" is filled with side-splitting ironic humor, as well as an healthy skepticism of the various powers that be that the protagonist encounters. My guess is that people who saw the movie first will be disappointed by the lack of sentimentality in the book - but if you are one of the handfull of people remaining on the planet who have not seen the movie, PLEASE read the book first - it's hilarious and life-affirming, without falling into the maudlin trappings that (at least in my mind) diminished the movie.
The history of USA, from origins to about 1990.......2006-05-07
Forrest Gump, as movie (and probably as novel) are excellent, dense, powerful works presenting the sometimes very self-critical history of the USA. This is made as an allegory, where a few individual characters attempt to give easily identifiable bodies for millions of Americans.
Forrest Gump, as character, "represents" the American people through history, in its most typical way, e.g. having the opinion of the majority of voters, in an allegory fashion. Jenny represents a significant alternate opinion, shared by an important minority of American people.
To give a very few examples: origins are briefly sketched (behind the name of Forrest we are supposed to think of Amerigo Vespucci, the house of Forrest Gump's mother is an image for the New land receiving immigrants, the young Forrest is initially walking with the help of leg braces - England - than is forced to grow independant); ... much later we see progress develop gradually, with contributions from other countries; Vietnam-war outcome for USA is shown to Pres. Johnson in a crude way, with relatively minor damages; ... at the end AIDS appear, Eastern, communist countries fail (Joe's house destroyed), people is shown to have become shareholder, some computer enterprizes successfully appear (Apple), and future opens (re. child of "all" America, Forrest Gump's and Jenny's child).
In addition, great samples of representative American landscapes and music are provided.
The feather flying at the beginning and at the end of the movie, at the beginning touching Forrest Gump and at the end passing to his son, is obviously meant to represent American spirit.

could some please review the BOOK??.......2005-02-27
I understand many of you loved the movie. However, this listing should have posted reviews of the BOOK!!!! Would someone please post a review of the BOOK to let us know if it's worthwhile, or just like the movie. Thanks.
One word to describe this book...WOW!.......2003-05-13
I had to read a book for my highschool for a grade and i chose Forrest Gump. My friends have read it and said it was great but that it was very different then the movie. I loved it. The first day i started it i read 67 pages and then the next day i read the rest of it through out the day. I oddly couldn't put the book down. I think everyone should read it. It was hysterical, interesting, and imaginative. I ain't to smart and i related with this character a thousand times. I am so glad i chose this book as the last book to read for the year. I will read it again. I hope whomever read this book also laughs and learns a few lessons about life!

Product Description
Unabridged audiobook on eight compact discs. Forrest Gump is the publishing phenomenon that surged to #1 on the New York Times best-seller list and stayed there for weeks. Satirical and hilarious, this book also inspired the motion picture that won six Academy Awards® and became one of the highest-grossing films of all time. Slow-witted, warm-hearted Forrest Gump is America's most lovable folk hero. From his college days as a star running back for the University of Alabama, Forrest's remarkable adventures carry him through three decades of American life. Vietnam war hero, world-class ping-pong player, and astronaut, Forrest crosses paths with some of the most famous -- and infamous -- people of the 20th century. He compares battle scars with Lyndon Johnson, saves Chairman Mao from drowning, and carries a naked Raquel Welch down Rodeo Drive. If you've only seen the movie, you're in for a treat when you hear the original bawdy, madcap adventures of Forrest. Narrator Mark Hammer came to the Recorded Books studio with a long and distinguished career in the theater. He was a drama professor at Catholic University, and is a beloved acting coach at New York's Stella Adler Studio. He has appeared in major regional theaters, Broadway productions, and on television and radio. Listeners and audio critics agree that the characters and regional dialects they hear in Mark Hammer's narrations are astounding. AudioFile touts this narrator as "one of the finest interpreters of our day."

Audio Performance by Mark Hammer is Hilarious.......2005-07-30
I read this book once before, at its release in 1986, when it was just a low-profile "quirky" book. The subsequent smash-hit "warm and fuzzy" movie version superceded my recollections of it. Now over ten years later I re-visited "Gump" via Mark Hammer's audio rendition and found it as rich and satisfying as authentic, down-home southern cooking -- not the bland version some try to foist off as southern food. For the most part Groom succeeds at being weird and wonderful, but the "do you want to buy a watch?" scene, and Forrest's movie screen test fell very flat, and the ending, while avoiding predictability, didn't resonate for me. But I laughed (hard) aloud several times at Hammer's narrative, so all's forgiven.

Good Grief.
Chocolate? From Alabama?
Next thing you know we'll get a Star Wars chocolate book.
Should've stuck to possum and poke salad. What? You say they don't eat that stuff there anymore? MacDonalds. That's why Alabama tops out in obesity.
Hey, what about moonshine and roadkill? As long as it sells books. Or maybe a movie this time.
A valuable little cookbook!.......2001-10-28
This is a great dessert cookbook for chocolate lovers. There is a nice range of recipes from basic cookies and bars to elaborate cakes. The recipes are clearly written and can create impressive results for bakers of all levels.
The pictures really inspire the reader to pick up a mixer and try the recipes. It is also fun for fans of Forrest Gump to read the little side bars.
This is a great compact cookbook that has a lot to offer!
I LOVE this book!.......2001-08-25
I have countless cookbooks and recipes (especially for desserts), but this one is by far one of my favorites. I have tried many recipes from this book, and almost every single one is amazing. The first time I made "Forrest's Four Chip Fudge," my friends and family could not get over how good it tasted. They couldn't stop telling me that my fudge was the best they'd ever had. Not only are the recipes great, but there are so many helpful hints for working with chocolate that even a beginner could master the techniques in no time! Plus, I think it's adorable the way it is written from Forrest's view point, as he always talks about how great his mama was.
Forrest Gump : My Favorite Chocolate Recipes : Mama's Fudge,.......2000-02-14
I found this recipe book to be wonderful. I have tried several recipes and they turned out fabulous and a good one I can recommend right off the top of my head is the hot fudge sauce. This is so simple and absolutely wonderful -- the best hot fudge ever! Try it, you'll like it. :-)
Recipes that do not work........1999-04-17
I tried only one recipe in this book, the cake on the front cover. It did not turn out at all. I think that the instructions for the filling layer in the middle are completely wrong in the book. I tried to make it twice, and I am a very good cook. So I ended up throwing the whole entire cake in the garbage, I was so frustrated.

Forrest's Philosophy.......2002-01-23
After watching and reading all the adventures in the satirical and probing book and movie, I think Forrest deserved a few beers here and put his advice column mojo working here. Some of them actually make sense and might give a family youngin some good adages for life.
Wow! What a book........2000-03-12
For anyone whose looking for a dramedy book, here it is. Even if you've seen the movie the book will still make you laugh. I strongly recommend this book for anyone who is not reading as much as they would like to and want to start on a great book.

Book Description
Detective Inspector Tom Thorne now knows that three murdered young women were a killer's mistakes -- and that Alison was his triumph. And unless Thorne can enter the mind of a brilliant madman -- a frighteningly elusive fiend who enjoys toying with the police as much as he savors his sick obsession -- Alison Willetts will not be the last victim consigned forever to a hideous waking hell.
Already an international bestseller, Mark Billingham's Sleepyhead is a chilling masterwork of crime fiction -- a boldly original experiment in terror that will beget dark dreams and sleepless nights.
Customer Reviews:
London noir ........2007-10-08
This was published in 2001 and in the intervening years Mark Billingham has written several other novels .most featuring the protagonist of this book ,London policeman Detective Inspector Tom Thorne .They have established him as a potent force on the British crime writing scene being for the most part in the noir tradition ,violent and morbid at times with no pat resolutions ,but shot through with a vein of humour ,atemming no doubt from the writer's years of experience on the stand-up comedy circuit .
When a number of young women turn up dead of strokes in London it is at first assumed to be a series of accidental deaths but astute pathological work reveals the strokes have been deliberately induced .A woman named Alison Willetts survives such an attack and it is believed to be the perpetrator's first mistake .Au contraire-the man leaves a taunting note on Thorne's car acknowledging that he was trying to induce a stroke related coma ,and not to kill .So Alllison is his first "success".As she lies in a coma we are given her thoughts in a series of italicised passages that pepper the narrative .While some reviews have expressed unhappiness at this device ,for me it works well giving us an glimpse of the crime from the angle of a victim who still has thoughts and feelings but whose physical state renders her unable to communicate with any erewal facility or ease .We are also given passages from the viewpoint of the killer
Thorne begins to fixate on a Doctor at the local hospital as the killer -one Jeremy Bishop .He has the requiste medical knowledge ,access to drugs and has also been a long time friend of thje Doctor in charge of Allison's case , Anne Coburn with whom Thorne begins a relationship ,thus giving a personal reason for Thorne's animosity .Thorne is attacked by the killer ,initially removed from the case and hounded by his colleagues who are peruaded he is barking up the wrong tree .He works the case unofficially with the aid of his keen and astute assistant Dave Holland
and before the case is wrapped there is another murder .
This is a political book too-Mr Billingham is clearly not greatly enamoured of UK health service policies and he inserts his views largely im Allison's monologues
Thorne is good central figure although it could be said I am prejudiced as I share his love for the darker side of country music -Hank ,Johnny Cash and Merle .He has managed to avoid becoming coarsened by the horrors of daily life as a homicide detective and has a mordaunt with that is bracing .While I am sure Mr Billingham would not appreciate the comparison I was reminded of the classic golden Age novel Trent's Last Case while reading the book -the detective assembles all the facts ,puts them together and get it wrong !
The ending is dark and bitter sweet but I liked it feeling that it did sum up the greyness and ambiguity that exist in our society.
Well paced ,plotted and written this is a substantial slice of modern British noir writing telling us as hank Williams once did "I'll never get out of this world alive"
Dark gritty thriller..........2006-08-15
An excellent thriller...dark, sinister and compelling.
The plot was gripping and written in a style that made it an easy read. Very impressive!
Claustrophobic and memorable.......2005-05-03
I did this kind of backwards. I read "Lazy Bones" first and so I knew who got spared and who didn't make it from the first to the third book in this series. It didn't hurt the suspense or the story, though. This one is good enough to stand on its own. And what a concept! We have here a criminal (lunatic?) who doesn't want to kill people. His or her idea is to deliberately induce a stroke to a victim so that they are still completely cognitive but unable to move more than an eyelash. Absolutely paralyzed and still fully intelligent with complete knowledge of the crime, but unable to communicate. And young girls are killed whilst this fiend practices the fine art of paralyzing without killing. It is a dreadful concept and gives me the absolute willies. We have the usual marginal Detective Inspector (Tom Thorne), his colleagues, and "incident room" badinage, but I do wish that we could sometimes have a detective who is actually functional in his or her personal life. Ian Rankin ruined things for us with Rebus and nobody will ever write the somewhat redeemable detective better so I wish everyone would quit trying. Having said that, this is a good and creepy read and the ending is a little weak, but also a bit of a relief. Or is it? Just the concept of an intentionally induced stroke will follow you around for a while afterward.
3.5 stars - Good+.......2005-04-09
Billingham has created some very interesting characters; Thorne, a relentless investigator who empathizes with the victims but is certainly not supercop; Dr. Anne Cobert, Alison's doctor who becomes Thorne's lover; and Alison herself. The dialogue is quite good as is the level of suspense-not over the top but done well in the right places. I already have Billingham's next two books and am looking forward to reading them.
Very dark, but very good..........2004-09-10
Based on the recommendation of a friend, I picked up Sleepyhead by Mark Billingham from the library. It's a real dark crime "who dun it" with twists that keep you reading to the end.
Detective Inspector Tom Thorne gets involved with a number of murders that are seemingly random until they find a "failed" attempt. The victim who survived is completely paralyzed due to a stroke, and Thorne figures out that she was actually the "success" of the killer. It turns out that the killer is really trying to "liberate" women from their bodies, leaving the only thing he values... their minds. He deliberately induces a stroke by physical manipulation of certain blood vessels, nerves and muscles. Thorne thinks he knows who is doing the killing, but his evidence against him keeps coming up short. The mental games between Thorne and his suspect grow more intense until Thorne is ready to admit defeat. But the story comes to a dramatic end with a final confrontation with a number of lives on the line.
As I mentioned above, the story is very dark. Not only is the subject matter intense (a killer wanting to turn his victims into vegetables, not corpses), but Thorne is a damaged individual with a lot of personal and emotional baggage. The author is English, so there are a number of slang phrases that American readers will have to think about in order to follow the conversation. And even though you think you know who the killer is, you just know there's going to be a twist somewhere.
Well written, and very different.... I look forward to his future work.

Timeless songs to be enjoyed for years.......2007-05-04
It has been well over a decade since my family bought this collection from Tower Records and I STILL listen to it from time to time. I even find myself humming the tunes as an adult. The songs are well chosen and performed. Nancy Cassidy's voice is just right for these "lullabies." There is nothing offensive or objectionable, everything is pleasant, catchy and soothing. Even the accompanying songbook is a pleasure to look at. It always made me feel better as a child and I am sure it will do the same for your children. Highly recommended!
Frightening.......2001-10-19
I found this book to be extremely rude towards midgets. I just was not impressed at all. This book really ticked me off in the way it treated midgets.
I love this one!.......2000-05-11
I bought this book and cassette for my now 11 year old son when he was just a baby. His younger sister, now 7, has enjoyed it for many years as well. I have bought this as a gift for many new parents. I love the collection of songs on this tape! From the classics like "Angels Watching Over Me" to Loggins and Messina's "Watching The River Run" to Bob Marley's "Three Little Birds". Come on - how much better can a "children's" cassette get! I'll be enjoying this one forever!
Best Toddler Bedtime Tape Ever!!!!.......1998-10-30
The songs on this tape are fantastic! They're arranged wonderfully, calming, and pleasant to listen to. Our kids loved it so much they accidently erased one side trying to play it. (It doesn't have the tabs on top broken off to prevent this. Do it yourself right away!)
The tape includes songs not typical to children's tapes, including some great american folk songs. This will greatly enhance your music collection.

It is a hot summer day, and
Bear's eyes are droopy.
But . . .
BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
pesky bugs are buzzing
here and there and everywhere.
What is a sleepy little bear to do?
He could try a growl.
GRRRRRR!
He could try a roar.
ROAR!
He could try swimming
and climbing and hiding
and running . . .
oh, dear!
It's a hot summer day, and
now Bear really needs a rest. Help!

Perfect for the Budding Reader but a Great Picture Book Too.......2006-08-09
Poor Bear just wants to sleep but nature isn't cooperating. All of the little creatures of the forest aren't ready to let him rest.
This sends Bear on a fun adventure to catch some winks. Bear soon finds himself even more annoyed by bees, frogs and bugs.
He swims. He climbs. He tries to hide. Bear just can't get away.
And then. Oh no! Bear takes a stumble. Then a tumble.
As he tries to escape them, he ends up finding the perfect place to take a snooze. Surrounded by the beauty of nature, he finally finds himself at peace with his surroundings and enjoys the beauty of the night sky -- bugs and all.
Sleepyhead Bear is geared to the Baby-Preschool reading level and is fun for both parents and children. The words encourage readers to make fun bug sounds as they read and the rhyming is perfect for budding readers without being too complicated.
The colorful illustrations also make this a great picture book for younger children who aren't quite ready to take on the task of reading. The text is large enough for them to follow along and understand the story by following the illustrations.

A favorite for years!.......2004-06-22
This book was one of my sons favorites when he was a tot (he's now 15). And my young daughter (now 2) loves it just as much as he did then. Adorable pictures depict animals in various bedtime routines; bathtime, storytime, a cup of cocoa and kiddies being tucked in by their mommies and daddies. Around the age of 2, most children aren't patient enough to pay attention to a whole story (no matter how brief), but for whatever reason - this captures her attention and holds on. She even wants to read it a second time herself, pointing the mommy and daddy and repeating "don't spill cocoa!". We've finally worn our 15 year old copy out and I'm so glad I've found it on amazon for a replacement! My only wish is that it was a board book!

Don't let the bedbugs bite!
This irresistible rhyming read-aloud story-acted out by a cast of one-of-a-kind bugs-is the perfect countdown-to-bedtime book. Donald Saaf's quirky style is sure to get a giggle, while Elizabeth Provost's rhythmic text makes it easy for children to count along as all ten sleepy bugs drift off to sleep.
Customer Reviews:
A precious story for precious little ones.......2005-08-31
Elizabeth Provost's delightful bedtime story is filled with sweetness and fun. It is a lovely "read aloud" and a lively "read again" (and again). Donald Saaf's darling illustrations highlight Ms. Provost's lyrical story. This book will delight young and old.
Who knew a sweet potatoe weevil could be so cute?.......2005-08-30
This is surely one of the cutest picture books to come out this year. Ten one-of-a-kind bugs count down to bedtime. "Ten little sleepyheads talking to their toys. One falls asleep in the middle of the noise." As you might guess, another sleepy bug falls asleep on each page. What you might not guess is the sweetly gentle ending, "Is he asleep? No? Well, here we go again!" offering another read-through to the child who doesn't fall asleep the first time. The inside cover pictures the comic sleepyhead bugs and the actual insects the artist used for inspiration, like a sweet potato weevil, a bush katydid, and the Southern green stink bug, all certain to garner a sleepy smile or two.

Mother/Preschool Teacher.......2005-07-05
This book is a must! It is a very simple yet very educational book for preschoolers. You can read the bed time story and along the way ask them to pick out their body parts that are mentioned in the story. I actually read this book to my 1 year old and he loves it. He loves to look at the wonderful pictures. Great bed time ritual!!
