Classic.......2007-05-11
Now that I've read everything by O'Connor (including works that were part of her thesis for her degree in writing) I am still amazed and inspired by her work. I'm not from the south or Catholic and I was not alive during the eras of which she wrote, but her writing transcends region and time. My favorites remain A Good Man is Hard to Find, Everything That Rises Must Converge, and Revelation, but I love all her stories, although I find the novels a bit more challenging - I think short story was her finest form. Her ability to mix desperation and violence with comedy is amazing, and often when I read her I think: "I shouldn't be laughing at that." I often wonder what additional work she would have produced if she had not died so young. Highly recommended.
Great literature in great binding.......2007-01-16
I am thoroughly enjoying this authoritative collection of O'Connor's writings. The writing speaks for itself as truly great and unique. This particular book is very classy and well put together; an excellent choice for someone with a significant interest in O'Connor.
Amazing Grace.......2006-01-21
How sweet the sound that saved this wreched human race. O'Connor writes of God's love and redemption of humanity. She uses exaggeration to make her point. Her characters are so very silly, obtuse, bigoted, loathsome they become cartoons, yet there is a deep integrity to their shallowness. She's not making fun of them, but giving them the justice of a pitiless description. Indeed they do not seem judged, but naked -- the fruits of their stupid, misguided ideas and actions on display. And these children of God do shocking things to others and themselves. And yet . . ..
And yet God allows them to live and learn, or not learn if that is their inclination. He gives them this freedom. He loves them. How can this be? How?
I love O'Connor for her art, her convictions, her courage, and her love. She is so very true and honest.
In addition to her novels and a thorough selection of short stories, there is a chronology of her life and a selection of her letters which are rewarding reading. The book itself is a wonderful object. The pages are of fine paper. The binding is such that you can lay it open on a table without breaking its back, and the pages will not move unless a breeze or you do so.

Oh yes! I adore her, and so do my mum and dad. They talk about her all of the time, and so I grew up with the prose ringing in my ears. I am so pleased to be reading her now.

The complaints about the poor organization of the collection can be overcome by simply reading it from front to back. Surely it is that good.
My foray into the works of Flannery O'Connor, a southern, gothic author of darkly humorous novels and short stories came via a recommendation in Harold Bloom's, "What to Read and Why." As it turned ot, I had read one of her short stories, "A Good Man is Hard to Find," in a collection somewhere and had been surprised and shocked, by the turn of events and ending of the story, so much so, that I remembered it instantly, even though it has to have been thirty years since I read it. I enjoyed everything, short stories, novellas, and even her letters. She writes about southern Christ-haunted people, most backward, all damned, but many redeemed. Bloom says that according to her, we are all damned but one should put that aside and simply enjoy her beautiful, grotesque, and wonderful comedic stories. Her protagonist is often a woman, forced to take on a role and duties she didn't sign up for but resignedly and with no illusions playing and discharging both out of a sense of morality or necessity; those women are usually the most superior beings in her stories.
Many of her insights stick with me months afterwards. For example, O'Connor says in one of her letters, "...Hazel's integrity lies in his not being able to do so. Does one's integrity ever lie in what he is not able to do? I think that usually it does, for free will does not mean one will, but many wills conflicting in one man. Freedom cannot be conceived simply. It is a mystery and one which a novel, even a comic novel, can only be asked to deepen." That brought tears to my eyes -- perhaps because it is so beautifully put.

Wise Blood is a comedy with a fierce, Old Testament soul. Flannery O'Connor has no truck with such newfangled notions as psychology. Driven by forces outside their control, her characters are as one-dimensional--and mysterious--as figures on a frieze. Hazel Motes, for instance, has the temperament of a martyr, even though he spends most of the book trying to get God to go away. As a child he's convinced that "the way to avoid Jesus was to avoid sin." When that doesn't work, and when he returns from Korea determined "to be converted to nothing instead of evil," he still can't go anywhere without being mistaken for a preacher. (Not that the hat and shiny glare-blue suit help.) No matter what Hazel does, Jesus moves "from tree to tree in the back of his mind, a wild ragged figure motioning him to turn around and come off into the dark..."
Adrift after four years in the service, Hazel takes a train to the city of Taulkinham, buys himself a "rat-colored car," and sets about preaching on street corners for the Church Without Christ, "where the blind don't see and the lame don't walk and what's dead stays that way." Along the way he meets Enoch Emery, who's only 18 years old but already works for the city, as well the blind preacher Asa Hawks and his illegitimate daughter, Sabbath Lily. (Her letter to an advice column: "Dear Mary, I am a bastard and a bastard shall not enter the kingdom of heaven as we all know, but I have this personality that makes boys follow me. Do you think I should neck or not?") Subsequent events involve a desiccated, centuries-old dwarf--Gonga the Giant Jungle Monarch--and Hazel's nemesis, Hoover Shoats, who starts the rival Church of Christ Without Christ. If you think these events don't end happily, you might be right.
Wise Blood is a savage satire of America's secular, commercial culture, as well as the humanism it holds so dear ("Dear Sabbath," Mary Brittle writes back, "Light necking is acceptable, but I think your real problem is one of adjustment to the modern world. Perhaps you ought to re-examine your religious values to see if they meet your needs in Life.") But the book's ultimate purpose is Religious, with a capital R--no metaphors, no allusions, just the thing itself in all its fierce glory. When Hazel whispers "I'm not clean," for instance, O'Connor thinks he is perfectly right. For readers unaccustomed to holding low comedy and high seriousness in their heads at the same time, all this can come as something of a shock. Who else could offer an allegory about free will, redemption, and original sin right alongside the more elemental pleasure of witnessing Enoch Emery dress up in a gorilla suit? Nobody else, that's who. And that's OK. More than one Flannery O'Connor in this world might show us more truth than we could bear. --Mary Park

Anyone Who Had a Heart.......2007-09-15
This novel combines startling images and an inscrutable Old Testament sensibility with funny scenes that will make you laugh out loud. It is the novel that helped cement Flannery O'Connor's literary reputation. She's a writer who will be part of the canon in a hundred years -- people will still be reading and discussing her. "Wise Blood" is the story of Hazel Motes, a man determine to strip Christ out of his life and out of the world, but, who, paradoxically, is also obsessed with Him. A walk through a haunted yet still good world filled with men who are made into monkeys, workaday street preachers, broke down autos, this is a kaleidoscope of sense, doubts, guilt, and humor: a must read tour de force.
Wiser to Not Read This Novel.......2007-08-28
I read a lot of books and am fond of many Southern authors, including the late Ms. O'Connor. I really enjoyed her wonderfully titled "A Hard Man is a Good Find" (Note: A fine birthday gift for my grumbling gorilla of a wife; inscription: "I told you so!") and I like the author's ability to make the grotesque humorous.
Unfortunately, this novel is a complete failure with very little to laugh about. It's a pretty meaningless story with virtually no plot: nutty war veteran returns to empty home town, goes to another town, preaches nonsense, acts like the nutjob he is, meets some other worthless characters, does nutty things in an effort to find redemption (an idiot's path, mind you), etc. This supposedly funny novel with a point (often my very favorite genre) fails to elicit more than a single laugh (the scene with the Gonga the Gorilla was pretty darn funny--pointless, but funny) and the point about redemptive suffering (if that was even the point) struck this reader as ridiculously rendered.
All the characters are lunatics and there's absolutely nothing driving this book to conclusion, other than the turn of the page. This novel has been highly recommended by people who tend to be trustworthy. Unfortunately, I put it on the short list of books I've actually finished that I wish I'd never started. Not her best effort and one of the worst novels I've ever read. HHD>.
Grotesque Comedy.......2007-08-20
Flannery O'Connor's Wise Blood has sometimes been described as dark comedy, sometimes simply as satire. Whichever description I eventually decide suits it best, this grotesque 1952 first novel is so disturbing that its characters and their fates will stay with me for a long time.
Haze Motes, recently released from the army after suffering a wound in Korea, returns to his home state of Tennessee where he finds himself, much to his irritation, taken for a preacher by many of the strangers whom he meets. This is an easy mistake to make since Motes has recently exchanged his uniform for the type of suit and hat commonly worn by preachers of the time and the fact that he carries himself like, and has many of the mannerisms and attitudes of, his grandfather, a onetime country preacher himself. But Motes is angered by the very idea of being mistaken for a preacher because he is repelled by the whole concept of Christianity.
After encountering a street preacher, and being disgusted by what he saw and heard, Hazel Motes founds his Church Without Christ, a church based on realism, one in which the blind do not see, the deaf do not hear, the lame do not walk, and the dead remain dead. Not too surprisingly, Haze's message attracts to him the kind of people who either become obsessed with his message or want to turn the Church Without Christ into a vehicle to put easy money into their pockets. There are Enoch Emery, an 18-year old so lonely in the big city that he sees the new church and its preacher as essential to his survival, Sabbath Lily a 15-year old abandoned by her charlatan preacher father, Asa Hawkes, and who sets out to seduce Motes, Hoover Shoates who hires his own false prophet and starts a rival church, and the landlady who decides to marry Motes in order to share his monthly government check.
Flannery O'Connor's writing seldom, if ever, provides the reader with anything like a "happy ending" and Wise Blood, her first novel, is no exception. It is filled with characters who focus exclusively on self-gratification and who are not the least concerned about what they have to say or do in order to get what they want from those who have it. Even the minor characters, in particular the police, are not to be trusted as Motes so painfully discovers near the end of the book. But along the way, O'Connor provides memorable scenes that reflect her sense of humor and irony. I won't soon forget the images of the small, newspaper-wrapped mummy being rapidly carried through the rainy streets after being stolen from a museum nor the man in the gorilla suit who terrified the couple in the woods with whom he only wanted to shake hands.
Someone Else's Nightmare.......2007-05-09
This review is for the Farrar, Straus and Giroux paperback edition, 1967. WISE BLOOD, first published in 1952, was Flannery O'Connor's debut novel.
The story opens with Hazel Motes, recently discharged from the Army, on the train to the fictional town of Taulkinham, Tennessee, where he's "...going to do some things I never have done before." Haze is not from Taulkinham, apparently has never been there. "But you might as well go one place as another," he says to a talkative passenger, and then adds without provocation, "I reckon you think you been redeemed."
Haze has a problem with redemption. He is haunted by the "ragged figure" of Christ "who moves from tree to tree in the back of his mind." On the street corners of Taulkinham, he preaches the Church of Christ without Christ, but attracts no followers other than Enoch Emery, an unlikely apostle and Onnie Jay Holy, a con man who usurps Haze's idea. Haze can't even convert himself. Instead, he relents to his compulsive interest in Asa Hawks, a competitive preacher who claims to have blinded himself, and Asa's fifteen year old daughter.
The author considers her work a comic novel about a person whose belief in Christ is a matter of life and death. I found it a dark story about confused characters from someone else's nightmare.
Where Shall Wisdom be Found?.......2006-12-16
"Wise Blood" could more aptly be called "Stupid Minds." Both titles are tendentious, but the latter is more accurate. Ms. O'Connor depicts a pair of Southern troglodytes in the grip of religious mania. We are meant to regard their fanaticism as a form of primal wisdom; in fact, it is merely ludicrous or pathetic. Those who deem this judgment parochial should ask themselves whether Ms. O'Connor, an Orthodox Roman Catholic, was any less so.
Faulkner plumbed the humanity beneath the grotesque. Ms. O'Connor is more interested in the God-driven grotesqueness that warps humanity; she sees it as higher knowledge. Her prose in this early effort is merely workmanlike, and time has made what was strange or shocking in her vision seem familiar. If blood wisdom were truly wisdom, a suicide bomber would be wise.

Ran Out of Steam.......2007-06-15
It took me about two weeks to read the last quarter of this book. Despite other reviews descriptions I didn't find a funny line in the book. A better description would be light reading. It is full of wacky characters but they never do anything which would provoke a laugh. Plus the scifi premise at the heart of the puzzle was outlandish but not interesting. This book is the latest of several books I have read recently that believes that creating a bizzare cast and leaving it at that without any comic development counts as mission accomplished. The story was wrapped up by the end but it left me saying "Huh?" because I wasn't sure where the denouement came from.

Once you start reading this book you will be compelled to finish it. The story and the characters are really interesting.
I would have to agree with one of the other reviewers that the use of "dialects" in the writing is somewhat distracting. But overall I would say that this book is a fun and interesting read.

This book is so full of fabulous patterns that you really won't know which one to knit first. Five or six of them are sized for infants, but almost all of them can be made for two- or three-year-olds up to ten-year-olds. I've made a number of patterns from this book and have loved all the end products (as have their wearers).
Some of my favorites: Hero, a Rowan Denim roll-neck with a big white star on the chest; Lucky, a soft moss stitch cardigan for babies; Harry, a cool mock turtleneck with ribbed sleaves; and Daisy, a cardigan with huge flowers all over it. There are also two bags, a hat, two blankets, a pillow, and two scarves.
All of the patterns are pretty simple (beginning to intermediate knitters), but have a special something that makes them fun to make and to wear. I know I'll be knitting from this book for years.
Beautiful basics.......2002-12-17
I love this book. Although I haven't knitted a sweater from this book yet, I am definitely going to. I love knitting sweaters with interesting textures and I am not a big fan of lots of color changes, so this is the book for me. There are lots of elegant, contemporary patterns for kids in here.
Never go out of Style Patterns.......2002-10-04
I just received this book and am already in the midst of making on sweater and have plans to make many more, using all types of yarn to create different effects. The patterns are straight forward and even for the beginner it will draw you in and inspire you to create. The pictures are clear and full page. Many patterns from babies up to 10 year olds. Instructions are quite clear. You can even adapt the patterns for teen if you like. There isn't enough time in the day to make all the sweaters and accessories. This is one of those books when you find you have knitters block that you can pick up and be inspired all over again. LOVED IT, LOVED IT, LOVED IT.
An excellent book!.......2001-10-30
I love this book. The designs are practical and contemporary. The book is well presented and attractive. I have spent hours with this book in one hand and yarn shade cards in the other - planning my next projects! There are very few designs I would not like to knit given limitless time and money. I have had difficulty obtaining some of the recommended yarns (in Australia) but have successfully substituted. The instructions are very easy to follow and are not difficult. There are diagrams showing the dimensions of the garment pieces, which I find invaluable when knitting for my 3 year old daughter who still has a chest measurement of a one year old but is much taller!
Classic Knits for Young AND Bigger Kids!!!.......2001-10-17
The first thing I really loved about this book is that the patterns go up to age 10, a definite plus. Secondly, the models are absolutely beautiful, from all ethnic backgrounds, something you don't see everyday. And thirdly, the patterns are spectaular, especially Crumpet, Muffin, Jolly, Imp, Chill, and Daisy. You will find plenty of inspiration in this book.

This is a unique, intriguing narrative about an amazing Budgie and an astute caregiver, enhanced by clever, humorous dialogue of pertinent insight into their fascinating, relevant experiences. I was mesmerized by the content and data of this significant volume of Fun 'N Facts! An excellent addition to any personal collection of important as well as entertaining books!

Great book for kids under 5.......2000-03-31
This book allows children to use their imagination as they trace the mazes with their finger, which is great since there are no pencil or crayons necessary. The text is in a rhythym format which makes it more exciting for younger readers. There are also hidden pictures throughout the individual maze pages.

Good for little Maze-aholics.......2000-07-05
My 4 year old loves mazes. This book, although pretty short, was colorful and fun. It is bright and just busy enough for her. A ton of cute, little white mice are getting ready for a brithday party (another 4 yr old favorite theme). The down side is there are only 13 mazes to work on and they go rather quick. They are not the kind you do with a pencil, you do them with your finger.

I loved the book .It was a lot of fun and I enjoyed doing all the mazes.I am 6 years old. It is the best beginners maze book for me.I liked it because there was a lolly bag to find in each maze as well as doing the mazes.I also liked the rhymes to go with each maze
