Don't Tell Anyone by Peg Kehret
Dutton's Children's Books - New York

Imagine yourself in the position of being responsible of frequent, pleasant, and disappointing situations. Imagine how hard it is to stick up for your community, nature, and even criminals. Megan Perk, lived life like any ordinary kid, until she discovered a variety of cats that needed her help.
This was where everything went wrong. After her discovery of the cats, Megan wanted to obviously help them, so every morning; she would visit them and feed them cat food. The only thing that Megan didn't know was that the field was soon going to be bulldozed and would be constructed into an apartment area, and she didn't want the cats to be bulldozed either. This was also the field that Megan witnessed a car crash that gradually turned into a hit and run murder trial making it even more difficult and insecure for her to visit. Knowing about the murder trial and sticking up also made Megan more courageous and responsible.
When the construction workers started working on the field, Megan started complaining to stop the bulldozing and help the cats although she knew not the talk to strangers. Unfortunately, the person that she was talking to was pretending to be the boss of the company, known as Brice Colby, and pretending to help the cats in which Megan didn't know. This person was faking to be the boss because he didn't want the others to know about saving the cats, to make Megan disappointed and more stressed. A few days later when Megan was casually feeding the cats, she discovered a threatening note saying, "If you want the cats to live, then don't tell anyone." This note left Megan with another situation and concern.
When Megan encountered the fake Brice again at a balloon festival, she talked about the note to him, this filled him with anger because he wrote the note. His punishment was unpredictable to Megan that kept me on the edge of my seat Horror filled my mind and pity for the little girl. Megan returned safe, and learned never to talk to anyone she didn't know. The cats were given shots and adopted into nice, warm, healthy homes. As usual, most stories end happy, which I like, but I didn't like how Peg Kehret did not conclude what happened to Shane (the fake Brice) what happened to the person in the car accident, and the criminal who hit the car.
Don't Tell Anyone is a very fascinating book that you cannot put down. It is a simple book to read, and if you admire mysteries, then this is the perfect book for you. Fifth to seventh graders should have no problem reading this; and lastly, you'll love it!

I really liked this book.If you haven't read this book I think you should. If you have don't you think it's a good book? It's about a gil named Megan. She is trying to save some kittens. Her mom tells her not to go back into the field ever again, but she does it anyway. How does she save them now?I don't like the part when the man takes her in the hot airballon and doesn't bring her back.I enjoyed the part when shr saves the cats.

A Review by Cory

This book was fun and easy to read, almost at every time there was something important happening....You can't really lose attention to this book or you get lost fast...but its not like you would lose interest anyways.
In this book there is really nothing that I hate. I can't really talk bad about it. To a person who likes to actually read I personally think that you would not find anything wrong with this book. It has conflicts, dialogue, action, it has everything. So the least thing I can say is ENJOY.
This truly is one of very many good books!.

Domestic life, in Frederick Busch's 17 elegant stories, is like a cracked windshield: one tiny ping of gravel can, in time, fissure the whole thing. In "Machias," a man remembers the exact moment his marriage ruptured; he and his urbane wife were listening to an old curmudgeon, and each came away with an utterly different understanding of the tale, and the man. "I think it possible, as I look back when I dare, that our conversation in the shabby, lantern-lit dining room of the old man's house in Machias was the largest moment of my life. It went on. It is going on." Busch's characters can't help but spill their secrets, and they're pretty grumpy about it. In the ironically titled "The Talking Cure," a young boy works for a veterinarian who happens to be having an affair with his mother. The boy concludes, simply, "It's a story I try not to tell."

Don't Tell Anyone closes with "A Handbook for Spies." This long novella follows the life of a young, and then not-so-young, man whose parents escaped the Nazis in 1930s Paris. He is a professor in love with a married woman (a girl, really) who becomes a repository for his angst. With its dead-on campus milieu, its guilt-ridden sex, its inescapable ghosts of the past, it closely recalls Busch's 1997 masterpiece, Girls. And here, too, Busch comes as near as he ever does to delivering a manifesto on love: "Truly, he thought on one of his icy drives, Kafka is the patron saint of families. He had impressed a woman in graduate school with this observation. She had dated him, and it was not impossible, he thought, that Franz Kafka, snug as a bug in a bed, was the reason. To love, Kafka taught, was to be suspicious of what you must pay for the love." There exists no finer summing-up of Busch's own writing. --Claire Dederer

Book Description

Not since Raymond Carver has the soul of the American family been plumbed as eloquently or as poignantly. The hungers of love and the fear of time drive the men and women, sons and daughters in these stories to speak. Frederick Busch renders precisely the need to connect and shows us the ways--funny, tender, and heartbreaking--in which connections, in spite of love, often fail. In "Heads" a mother is haunted by her own past when her daughter faces an accusation that could send her to jail. In "Malvasia" a daughter gives her bereaved father the courage to go on living. A father suffers over his inability to save his grown son from heartbreak in "Passengers." "The Joy of Cooking" is a brilliant portrait of a failed marriage. Called a "first-rate American storyteller" and "master craftsman" by the New York Times Book Review, Busch brings us into the achingly familiar lives of people caught between the need to tell a story and the fear of speaking out.

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece of Modern Short Stories.......2001-10-17

In this book, Frederick Busch once again shows an incredible mastery of the short story as a vehicle to convey the deepest and most intimate personal feelings, even through the ephemeral nature of a short story as opposed to a novel. Yet, Busch has a talent shown by only a few present day short story writers. His ability to convey human feeling and emotion with the most elegant constructions is clearly demonstrated with this collection.

The intensity with which Busch presents his emotionality is enhanced by his incredibly insightful portrayal of the processes of the human mind. His stories are so rich with the deepest of our hidden thoughts that they become almost palpable. In these stories, Busch portrays highly intelligent people working with personal intimacies that are highly personal, yet so universal at the same time.

Particularly attractive is his "novella" in the book, "Handbook For Spies." Not only is the story captivatingly well written, but it is a virtual social commentary beyond the basics of the plot he lays out. In addition, his implication seems to be, that in one way or another, we are all 'spies' in some sense or another, or at least we act like them. In an editorial moment, his comment that Philip Roth is "careless about his character's lives ... he's frivolous about them..." portrays an unusually striking ability for Busch to develop his characters in a more mature emotional manner than he feels that Roth does.

Any person who enjoys the short story genre will not be disappointed by this book by Busch. For those with a high level of sensitivity toward human introspection, this book is a true revelation.

5 out of 5 stars "A Genius for Storytelling".......2001-07-28

[Note: This review was originally published October 15, 2000, in the Seattle Times ...

For a volume thick with stories, "Don't Tell Anyone" is a quietly ironic title. The characters talk -- to friends or strangers, to themselves, even to ghosts -- trying to make sense of things and relieve their isolation. Like the protagonist in the opening story, "Heads," the characters throughout Frederick Busch's 20th book of fiction are filled with "half-remembered words, tatters of statement, halves of stories, the litter of alibis, confessions, supplications, and demand."

Talking sometimes closes more doors than it opens, or taps into buried rages that erupt in threats of violence. As if improved expression could solve the problem, characters correct their own and each other's phrasing. But language has a life of its own, confusing and concealing even when a speaker is being careful or terribly honest, and what one tells oneself can be the most treacherous story of all. The title urges silence for strong reasons. Yet secrets cut the characters off from people they love, as well as from themselves.

Busch's world is problematic, but his stories awaken deep joy in the reader. In the gorgeous, heart-rending story "Malvasia," a woman brings all sorts of comforts to her recently widowed father, who wants nothing except to believe that when night falls his wife will greet him in the room they used to share. In "Timberline," the narrator's flashback to a dangerous hike with his father won't let the reader go, and this memory is only one dimension of his gripping present crisis. Some of an old man's haunting, half-realized wisdom in "Machias" comes from once having held together a broken telephone wire in a blizzard, so that a doctor could be called to help birth a baby. In the old man's recollection, the message passed through his veins.

Most of the stories are about the things that happen to everyone -- a love lost, a child in trouble, a parent understood -- but that never come with directions or guiding principles attached. The rules and regulations of bureaucracies, on the other hand, are plentiful.

In "The Baby in the Box," the legislature controls the police department budget, so the hapless and terrified night dispatcher at the station, Ivanhoe Krisp, is the only person available when a midnight caller says a newborn was left in a dumpster. Our hero has to ride a poorly maintained, not-at-all-trusty SUV through the darkness to the rescue, and his wrenching question at the end ("Who ý would throw a person away?") won't be answered by any bureaucrat.

Nor, apparently, by any God. The book's title could be a mischievous deity's instructions to the universe: Don't tell anyone what things mean. Don't even tell people who they are. Is Krisp a hero like the great Scots warrior Ivanhoe, or just a flaky snack for the hungry night? When the narrator in "Timberline" has an amazing conversation with a stranger, has his life changed, or hasn't it? "Nobody tells him which."

Sometimes knowledge arrives, although in bizarre forms. In "Bob's Your Uncle" a psychotic young man ("wily and odd-looking, very large and a little arrested-sounding, and coated with the grime of the world") drops in on long-ago friends of his parents and won't leave. His misery and menace become a coded message to the host about himself.

Busch's understanding and compassion are generous and energetic. So is his fascination with how life goes wrong and how irrationally, impossibly, we keep trying to make things right. Each of his very different characters speaks in a unique yet natural voice. His plots move like good horses with expert riders -- a touch here, a subtle shift of weight there -- through dauntingly broken terrain. His phrasing is often brilliant; his syntax does effortless heavy lifting; his humor is a constant, unexpected grace and delight.

"Don't Tell Anyone" is a hugely satisfying book, and its author (this isn't news, but do tell everyone) is a genius of a storyteller.

5 out of 5 stars Another First Rate Book by Busch!.......2000-10-03

This collection of sixteen short stories and a novella is yet another first-rate effort by Frederick Busch. His characters have the kind of humanity that make them seem deeply real, with lives so flawlessly imagined that you can be swept away by them. Even if the short stories weren't so good (and believe me, they are excellent), it would be worth reading this book just for the novella "A Handbook for Spies." The longer format allows Busch to delve more thoroughly into his subject matter and characters, thus expanding the protagonist Willie's life in a way not possible in a short story. We are treated to Willie's loves, his fears, his peculiar relationship with his Holocaust survivor parents and their peculiar relationship, and what it all means to a man who escaped service in the Vietnam War.

Busch writes the kind of dialogue you might wish you encountered in your own conversations: sharp, witty, wise, intriguing. His language is impeccable, with descriptions so memorable I sometimes stopped reading in admiration, to savor the words. Busch can be as funny as he can be melancholy, and every last story in this book has tremendous emotional range.

5 out of 5 stars Phillip Margolin---author.......2006-11-04

I just discovered this author a few months back. His books are interesting and fast paced. You won't be able to put his books down until the end!

2 out of 5 stars Gone, But Not Forgotten By Phillip Margolin.......2006-07-17

Most sadistic and upsetting book I have ever read in so many years, 25 +. Never passed 40 pages. Pure evil towards human beings. I bought it new (2 stories, CostCo, any kid can pick it up and buy it, both bestselling, both the same scheme and disgusting, I checked the contents and some samples) and then threw it into the garbage (no recycling, someone might pick it up and read it), because my conscience does not allow me to pass it on to any sane person I know of or even sell it at a garage sale feeling OK. It's just fine in the garbage. Never before threw a book away, they were always treasured. But may this one rest in peace (I doubt it, with the contents). What happened to ratings to protect innocent and sane children, teenagers, and normal adults? If I knew my teenager would read a book like that, I'd be off to find a GOOD counselor and get that author into jail. Why do we have strict ratings with movies and magazines, but my 14 year old teenager has access to a junk book like this? Parents, we really need to watch out for these things. Our family is open and free-minded, so it is even more a shock. I will NEVER buy a book by Phillip Margolin again for myself or my family. Personally, it seems he is in real trouble and needs help. I'm a very involved reader ever since I could read, from Solchenizyn over Agathe Christie to Jon Krakauer (and everything in between). Never seen something bad like this. Be careful and know there are many books out there that will enrich your minds and lives Everyday lifeid difficult enough already, we don't need more (hopefully fictional) events to ruin them. Enjoy your summer and cheers!

4 out of 5 stars Not a dull moment.......2006-07-05

4 out of 5 stars Good read.......2006-06-17

If you've watched Lifetime, you've seen this plot a hundred times (it would seem). It's an easy read - something light for the summer. You should enjoy it - just don't expect too much.

3 out of 5 stars Why The Black Rose?.......2006-06-09

Margolin was the first criminal defense attorney to use the 'battered woman's syndrome' as a defense in court. The defense lawyer in this novel is Elizabeth (Betsy) Tannenbaum, last name of the last book I reviewed prior to this one. Betsy professionally represented a battered woman who was forced to kill an abusive husband. The judge told her, "I hope you can put this behind you and get on with your life."

There are many kinds of abuse besides getting physically hurt. Emotional abuse is just as damaging in the long run; the wounds are not visible but lie just beneath the skin, near the surface. After the victim has endured as much as she can take and has no other alternative except to fall into the parass of physical violent retaliation for her pain and suffering. "He hurt you. Men are like that" so they can live out their fantasies. Other men discard you (like yesterday's newspaper).

A black rose, a note which proclaimed, "Gone, But Not Forgotten": a conundrum not ever to be figured out. Where'd Vicky go and why? Some women are better gone and forgotten. Divorce is always a painful process. For most of us, once is enough, but I have known some who went through five or six divorces. One man bragged, "All they got from me was their name back" until the last one who was able to take (with the Court's help) almost everything he loved and legally owned. He was left an empty shell.

When one has been hurt in the process, she will find some way to be "not ever forgotten." No abuse is ever forgotten, either, even if the victim represses the worst parts. He will someday suffer greater agony than he dispensed.

Margolin has written HEARTSTONE, PROOF POSITIVE and TIES THAT BIND.

3 out of 5 stars Someone Get This Guy An Editor.......2005-06-19

This book is a nostalgic look at Riverview Amusement Park in Illinois. For those who have been there, the photos are a great journey down memory lane. The photos alone are worth the price of the book. The text, however, really needs some help (which accounts for penalizing the book 2 stars). There are way too many sentences beginning, "Do you remember..." The text is often unorganized jumping back and forth from one idea to another. Even the punctuation is abysmal in spots. For example, does anyone over the age of 12 use numerous question marks or exclaimation points at the end of sentences? The author tries to be clever in the book narrative as if one is going from ride to ride in the park. However, this become tedious very fast (and leads to all of the "Do you remember.." sentences). The book closes with the author reviewing other amusement parks (but showing only roller coasters--the author's favorite ride). It would have been nice to see photos of some of the other rides he mentions in this section's narrative. Other areas, that could have been looked at in more depth, were barely touched upon. For example, no newspaper clippings were included for the various injuries and deaths that occurred at Riverview. Very little information on the sideshow is present. Almost no information is presented on why the park actually closed--especially since billboards advertising the 1968 season were up and a license was purchased for the following year. Where is the editor--that is clearly needed? This is a book of great photos by a fan of Riverview. If you are expecting anything more than a photo album, you might be disappointed.

      5 out of 5 stars happy memories.......2001-04-10

Did not know this book existed until I was in Chicago about two years ago and drove by the former location of Riverview. I found myself with tears in my eyes because it was gone. My parents went there as children as did I. My cousin told me about the book and when we got to his house, ran to the computer to order from Amazon. Was totally enthralled by the publication and would recommend it to everyone who ever enjoyed the summertime at Riverview! Included were things I remembered as well as some I had forgotten. As the title indicated Riverview may be gone but will never be forgotten by those who were lucky enough to have experienced it.

5 out of 5 stars You can experience Riverview, even if you've never been!.......1999-07-18

Three generations of my family went to Riverview, myself being the last. I went as a small child, but could only remember bits and pieces. This book truly fills in all of the gaps. It gives a very specific look at all the areas of Riverview Park and what it was to many Chicagoans. It takes you on the rides, offers pictures of tickets, season passes and other Riverview related items. It also shows the sad and heartbreaking demolishment of Riverview Park. In closing, the book summarizes a few of the great roller coasters in the U.S. as well as some of the "traditional" amusement parks that are still in operation. For those people that are really interested in what Riverview Park was, this book will make you feel as if you were a part of the Riverview Park Era, even if you were too young to remember . . .

5 out of 5 stars Really enjoyed this book!.......1998-09-16

My Mom & Dad always talked about Riverview Park, but now with this book & its wonderful pictures, I can enjoy their memories too!

5 out of 5 stars Brings back great memories!.......1998-06-04

Riverview was in the hearts & minds of Chicagoans, but now we can see pictures & relive the fun we had there as kids. The text is informative and the pictures are great. Every Chicagoan should have a copy for their libraries.

3 out of 5 stars Gone But Not Forgotten.......2006-11-10

This is local history. The writer is not accomplished. The book is precious in that it preserves the stories of people and a way of life - Canadians in the prairie provinces, chiefly in the 1930s - which are past. Whole communities, each of them centered on grain elevators, are gone. There is almost no way these people and these places could be visited save through the efforts the writer made to produce this volume.

5 out of 5 stars A wistful and warmly written contribution .......2005-01-03

Gone But Not Forgotten is the true story of the history and modern disappearance of a daily facet of prairie agriculture and daily life. The simple wooden grain elevator functioned not only as a practical tool, but as a symbol of prosperity and stability for over a century. Black-and-white photographs illustrate the story of the grain elevator's widespread use, innovations to make it more effective, and its decline as agribusiness changed the way food is grown . A wistful and warmly written contribution to agarian memory and heritage, accurately commemorating the role of a once indispensible tool for small farmers.

        5 out of 5 stars A Heart Touching Book.......1999-11-03

The book was wonderful from start to finish . ..The love was real and heart touching and made you feel a part of the plot.. . If you liked this book, or want to read one that goes straight to your heart, read Stolen Moments by Barbara Jeanne Fisher. . .It is a beautiful story of unrequited love. . .for certain the love story of the nineties. I intended to give the book a quick read, but I got so caught up in the story that I couldn't put the book down. From the very beginning, I was fully caught up in the heart-wrenching account of Julie Hunter's battle with lupus and her growing love for Don Lipton. This love, in the face of Julie's impending death, makes for a story that covers the range of human emotions. The touches of humor are great, too, they add some nice contrast and lighten things a bit when emotions are running high. I've never read a book more deserving of being published. It has rare depth. Julie's story will remind your readers that life and love are precious and not to be taken for granted. It has had an impact on me, and for that I'm grateful. Stolen Moments is written with so much sensitivity that it made me want to cry. It is a spellbinder. What terrific writing. Barbara does have an exceptional gift!

5 out of 5 stars AN EXCELLENT BOOK TO BE SURE........1999-09-20

I SELDOM PICK A BOOK UP THAT I CAN NOT PUT DOWN,BUT THIS ONE WAS LIKE THAT.. .I WANTED TO KNOW WHAT EACH CHARACTER WAS DOING NEXT!

A BOOK SIMILAR TO THIS THAT READERS WILL LOVE IS STOLEN MOMENTS BY BARBARA JEANNE FISHER. ..IT IS A BEAUTIUFL LOVE STORY THAT TOUCHES THE DEPTH OF ONE'S HEART, WITH EVERY POSSIBLE LOVE KNOWN TO HUMANS IN IT. ..IT IS ONE THAT YOU WILL WANT TO READ OVER AND OVER, AND EVERYONE REGARDLESS OF AGE CAN IDENTIFY WITH.

        BOTH GREAT BOOKS.

5 out of 5 stars Potential for more........1999-07-16

Spencer Cook, the main character in this book, seems typical of any human searching for truth and meaning in life. He makes subtle but significant changes that allow him to be more fulfilled and satisfied with his life. I personally loved seeing the change that came about from true life experiences. There is potential for more of everything out in the world. The author allows the reader to feel like change and satisfaction is out there for everyone. In this engaging and simple story there is so much to find out about oneself.

5 out of 5 stars Fiction for Anyone.......1999-03-24

I don't get why people are referring to this as "mormon" literature. Because it mentions a bishop and a mission in passing? Maybe they know something I don't. The fact is that this is an inspiring, well written book for anyone at all, regardless of your faith.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent story filled with love, life and philosophy........1999-03-19

This book was wonderful and refreshing to read. Unlike the majority of Mormon Fiction, this story is believable. The charaters are well developed and realistic. The story is written so that it entertains and teaches at the same time. I love the philosophical questions that the main charater Specher has. They are questions that any young person asks and attempts to find answers to. This book is perfect for those lazy Thursdays when you are in a thinking mood and need something to indentify with.
