Book Description
Earthy, magical, and utterly charming, this tale of family life in turn-of-the-century Mexico became a best-selling phenomenon with its winning blend of poignant romance and bittersweet wit. The classic love story takes place on the De la Garza ranch, as the tyrannical owner, Mama Elena, chops onions at the kitchen table in her final days of pregnancy. While still in her mother's womb, her daughter to be weeps so violently she causes an early labor, and little Tita slips out amid the spices and fixings for noodle soup. This early encounter with food soon becomes a way of life, and Tita grows up to be a master chef. She shares special points of her favorite preparations with listeners throughout the story.
The Spanish language edition of the best-selling Like Water For Chocolate is a remarkable success in its own right. Now, in this mass market edition, thousands of new readers will be able to partake in the sumptuous, romantic, and hilarious tale of Tita, the terrific cook with an extra special something in her sauce.
From the Paperback edition.

The best story I've ever read!.......2006-08-01
I bought this book for my goddaughter who is a senior in high school and taking Spanish 4. But I have a copy myself and it is the best story I have ever read. The story has influenced my life, which is unusual for a novel. It is heart-warming, romantic, and inspiring for a decent gourmet chef like me. You'll love this story.
Como agua para chocolate.......2005-07-27
A look at the inner workings of a Mexican family through recipes, magic and sex. A charming read. Highly recommended.
a feast of the 5 senses, come to life.......2004-06-13
besides the excellent recipes wholly printed in the book version, here is my review of the movie, which is not as detailed nor able to be prolonged but is true to the book (unlike other movie versions of books in which some stuff is changed):
after you watch this movie, you will either want to eat, cook (preferably one of the mentioned recipes), make love or all three! i saw the version dubbed in spanish, and also read 3 selected chapters from the book, for spanish class. it's a work of art and genius, and it must be watched all the way through without stopping. the characters are excellently portrayed, and it combines love, feminism, drama, sensuality, lust, hope, passion, and humour, topped with cultural tradition and folklore. i don't know which one is better, the book or the movie. all of the 5 senses are provoked on a deep and perhaps even primal level, especially taste and smell, feverishly yearning for a sum greater than their overall parts (gestalt) - which brings up the sixth sense, intuition.
A Mexican Cinderella Story.......2003-04-30
Imaginatively told, romantic and sensual - this is a Latin-style fairy tale for adults only. Tita, our heroine, has a life of work & misery, caused by her mother who is cruel beyond reason to her and has brainwashed her since birth into believing that the youngest daughter must remain a spinster and take care of her mother for ever. Fortunately Tita is blessed with magical cooking skills that allow her to attract lovers and cast many types of spells over the people that consume her dishes, amazing events occur all around her. Tita is not the only talented member of the family either, her sisters are notable personalities as well.
I recommend this as a light & funny escape from reality.

taps many scenses.......2004-11-03
the first time I saw one of Laura's books we were in Phoenix
exhibiting my husbands sculpture show. The weather was hot the sun almost always lite the intense blue sky. Bruce first read the book and highly recommended it to me because of the similarities of ethnic origins.
To read Like Water for Chocolate is like taking a emotional course on life. Laura's story telling made it's way through my eyes and landed in my heart. Her descriptions of her emotions and the linking to food and it's preparation was superb. You will find that you prepare and enloy food in a way you never did before. If you want to be in someone else's shoes and heart for the length of this book then I highly recommend it. I savored every page of the last chapter, knowing that the end
was near, I could not bear to finish it. I have tried to explain my feeling through my sculpture, I can only hope that I can
achieve as well as Laura Esquirel does.
I always have one of her books on the go. Instead of reading from start to finish I now read a chapter here and there as an emothional treat. It's not where you end up, it's how you get there. thankyou Laura Esquirel for that.

Book Description
Vampires.
They hunt in every major city, hidden by the crowds, shielded by disbelief. They are Killers, and their prey is human.
Not all vampires are Killers. The Guardians of the Night sacrifice the superior physical and psychic strength that comes with feeding on humans to protect them. But the Guardians walk a thin line, for even a single kill could leave them helplessly addicted to murder.
When detective-turned-P.I. Carolyn Mathers was left at the altar, she never once thought her fiancé had been turned into a vampire. Two years later, Gray reappears, bringing murder, mystery, and an unbelievable tale of Guardians, blood-thirsty Killers, and his own transformation with him.
And he's been accused of murder.
A first-rate P.I., Carolyn is determined to help. Gray won’t allow what he is now to taint her -- but Carolyn vows to never let him go again.
But will helping Gray mean becoming a creature of the night?

Let's Make It 4.5--Much Better Than I Expected !.......2007-05-26
When oh when am I gonna get the "don't judge a book by it's cover" thing down? I had purchased this book months ago and read a lot of really bad stuff since its purchase--but I was so put off by the cheesy looking cover I just let this great book gather dust. Finally, at the end of my new stack, I started reading and this is the first in what appears to be another darn good series. Because it's vampire-paranormnal there's some of the expected mythos, but there are enough fresh twists to keep the plot moving and the characters engaging. Another strong female, but missing some of the usual arrogance, which makes her not so predictable. Next one in the series is already on my to-be-purchased list--we might call this level of novel a "hot buttered popcorn" book. Make the treat and enjoy the book--not quite good enough to be a "keeper" so the salt and butter are OK on the pages.
Watchers In The Night.......2007-05-16
I loved the book and plot. I just read the book for the second time and enjoyed it again. Needless to say, I can hardly wait to read Secret's In The Shadow's and her third book in this series when it comes out in August. Thank you Jenna.
Okay, but enough potential to get next book..from librabry.......2007-04-24
This start to a supposed series was okay, far from superb writing. She has a ways to go to catch up to JR Ward, Laurell K Hamilton, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Keri Arthur etc.. There was so much detail at describing what was happening that at times that I found myself skipping over many parts with the words blah, blah blah in my head. Let me describe to you how I open a box of tissue... I take the box in my left hand, because I am right handed, then with my right hand I grasp the plastic wrap and pull with my entire god given strength. Then with my right thumb & forefinger I grasp the perforated opening.. Okay by now you should be saying blah, blah, blah. The good vampire vs. bad vampire bit isn't new, and at least in book one, the whole Guardian guild doesn't sound to impressive. And Gray, the hero, really needs a shot of testosterone. He was very close to being a girly man. The secondary male characters, Jules & Drake hold more promise to being the alpha kick a** Guardians that I think the Guardians were intended to be. I can even envision Eli, the founder of the guardians having his own place in the series if the author can step it up a couple of notches. I am glad I picked this book up at the library. I'll also go through my library for the 2nd book to see if there is improvement in the series
blah.......2007-04-10
I made it through about 3/4 of this novel and then skimmed the ending and closed the book, permanently. It was boring. The characters had no dimension. The plot lukewarm. Overall, very disappointing. I didn't even like the old fiance' left me at the alter scenario and has returned. The hero was a wus. Gosh, I can go on and on. The only character with character was Jules and he was a secondary character in the story.
Great New Vampire Series.......2007-01-15
I hated to put this book down because I couldn't wait to see what would happen next. It was a very suspenseful book and I was certainly surprised when the villains were revealed.
The author has created an interesting new vampire world that is more realistic and fleshed out than many others. The characters are well developed and appealing, especially the fiesty heroine Carolyn and the sexy hero Gray.
I particularly enjoyed the flashes of humor in the book, often added by the intriguing cast of secondary characters. I hope we find out more about some of these, especially the powerful vampires Drake and Jules, in later books.

The Night Watcher.......2004-07-06
The book is not up to the high standard set by Lutz's earlier novels.
An Edgar nominated work.......2004-03-03
The wealthy are dying in Manhattan. A serial arsonist is setting their bodies on fire and watching as they burn to death. On the trail of the killer are NYPD Detectives Ben Stack and Rica Lopez. The killer is aware of their presence and calls them to alert them to the killing and to prevent the fire from spreading any further. They desperately must seek the identity of the killer and discover what the victims have in common, if anything.
John Lutz is a veteran mystery writer with many previous books published. He has previously won the Edgar for a short story in 1987. The experience is quite evident in both the pacing and the rhythm of the story. Events move seamlessly and inexorably to the conclusion which is both clever and surprising. Ben and Rica, the main protagonists, are engaging. Other characters are well portrayed but lack the emotional depth of these two. The story is rapidly paced. It is a very impressive work and well worthy of the Edgar nomination.
Disappointing.......2003-12-27
As an avid fan of serial killer tales, I have read some very poor efforts at suspense. While this book is not absolutely dreadful, it was a bit of a disappointment.
The character of Ben Stack is a cliche among suspense novels: hardened, tough, and estranged from his wife. Detective Rica Lopez does display some creative insights as a character but was left underdeveloped throughout the book. Also, Lutz describes her office behavior as, well, slutty.
The adversary the NYPD cops are tracking down, is the Torcher. A mad, pyromaniac who delights in tying people up and setting them ablaze. Right from the start, it's apparent this killer is following some sort of agenda, but due to the constant backstories and time-changing, it becomes a complicated mess. The one red herring is drawn out relentlessly by the author. While the ending was a suprise and did provide an exlamatory,"No Way!" that wasn't enough to rescue the rest of the book from mere mediocrity.
Torcher Scorcher.......2003-03-25
Well written Edgar nominated (Best Original Paperback) "Night Watcher" is brisk, yet moody; well paced and quirky. This is not your standard serial killer outing.
Ben Stack, legendary homicide detective and his assistant Rita Lopez are assigned a grisly case. A man while bound has been torched in his own New York high-rise apartment. The crime took place in the kitchen and apparent safeguards have been taken to keep the fire from spreading. The victim was a bachelor with no apparent enemies and well fixed financially. There are virtually no clues. Another almost identical killing takes place. The tension racks up not only for the police, but also for the fire department who fear that if these fires get out of control, it could be a catastrophe. It is impossible to effectively fight a fire over the 10th story level. The net widens to take in more suspects, but the killer seems invincible. The climax is a nail-biter; their main suspect could also be the next victim on the list.
Mr. Lutz tells his story in a crafty manner with effective flashbacks, foreshadowing and glimpses into the killer's thought processes. The characterizations are sharp, though Lt. Ben is a little wooden. Assistant Rita never misses a trick to force her way into Ben's affections. No retiring flower here!
Contrary to previous reviews, I believe the story is well told and in a convincing manner. The information on high-rise fires is not only interesting, but also instructive. There are bits of humor in the interactions of the various characters, slyly placed and well presented. There are a few loose ends (how did the killer gain entry?), but they are minor. "Night Watcher" is well worth your time.
-sweetmolly-Amazon Reviewer
ho-hum, another serial killer.......2003-01-19
John Lutz has wom the Edgar and Shamus awards, so I'm assuming he's written much better stuff than this, a routine tale of a serial killer who burns people alive. The interplay between the investigating officers was not realistic at all, and the parade of suspects muddies the waters to no good effect. The officers also seemed to have a surprising lack of insight into the workings of the criminal mind, an unforgiveable sin in these days of psychological profiling. The serial killer is a sympathetic character, but we get little insight into his background and motivations.
