Book Description
National best seller and Today show Book Club selection, Broken for You is the story of two women in self-imposed exile whose lives are transformed when their paths intersect. Stephanie Kallos's debut novel is a work of infinite charm, wit and heart. It is also a glorious homage to the beauty of broken things. When we meet septuagenarian Margaret Hughes, she is living alone in a mansion in Seattle with only a massive collection of valuable antiques for company. Enter Wanda Schultz, a young woman with a broken heart who has come west to search for her wayward boyfriend. Both women are guarding dark secrets and have spent many years building up protective armor against the outside world. As their tentative friendship evolves, the armor begins to fall away and Margaret opens her house to the younger woman. This launches a series of unanticipated events, leading Margaret to discover a way to redeem her cursed past, and Wanda to learn the true purpose of her cross-country journey. Both funny and heartbreaking, Broken for You is a testament to the saving graces of surrogate families and shows how far the tiniest repair jobs can go in righting the world's wrongs.

Senseless in Seattle.......2007-09-16
The best thing about this novel is its setting - Seattle, city of residence of the author. The worst is everything else. The story itself, about an elderly woman recluse named Margaret who lives alone in a mansion with valuable ill-gotten goods until she is diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, is utterly senseless. After her diagnosis, Margaret chooses to take in a boarder whose temperament and personality suit her mission, which relates to the relics she has watched over for so long. Once the whole "broken" reference becomes is revealed, there isn't much else to it. If, once all of the main characters have appeared, the reader conjures up the sappiest ending possible for each of them, they will have a pretty good idea of the plot. Why, the reader might ask, must the valuable, intact items be "broken" as opposed to say something slightly logical like: donated to an appropriate charity, museum or cause. And if certain plot critical items had been broken, the inevitable (page 341) could not have occurred. Most of the characters stink. And although the only real villain in the story is the father of a main character, the actions of three of the other males don't exactly warm the heart: one deserts his child; one waits ridiculously long for a love interest to "come around," and another does the unspeakable, then tops it off by finding himself a trophy wife. A female character pines ridiculously long after her (fatherly?) love interest: an older, unattractive drunkard. Margaret herself makes some pretty unlikely life choices, which can only be explained by attributing them to the effects of the tumor on her brain. And that only covers the living. Besides the nonsensical plot and the overwhelmingly mediocre, spineless, sorry, sad sacks characters, there are several pages containing overly graphic descriptions of intimate behavior that just don't suit the tone of the book. For a fabulous novel with a Holocaust-related theme, try The Book Thief by Markus Zusak.
More Moving Than Most.......2007-09-13
What a great book! The reader grasps early on that breakage (or our collective obsession to avoid it) will be a multi-layered metaphor throughout the book. Kallos' deft character development and their respective tragedies drew me in as though meeting new friends with familiar pain. Thoroughly quirky and cumulatively predictable, the story builds as brokenness and suffering is given great worth - something hard to grasp when you're the one who is hurting, but it's one of humanity's greatest truisms. This book closely compares to John Irving's many delights by demonstrating that our oddities and tragedies prove to be the real substance and perverse joy of being alive.
and now a warning.......2007-09-06
If you like good fiction maybe you should wait for the author's next book. This book begins promisingly but becomes increasingly absurd. Tiresome by the middle, irritating by the end, very hard to finish(club pick). It is well-written and VERY ambitious but the book's real relationships (father/daughter, owner/objects, jilted lovers, guilt/retribution for a few)are mainly resolved so poorly that I would warn serious readers off this one.
The author's Big Themes keep piling up. Many bad fiction cliches including insta-friends, saintly boyfriends, ghosts.
Could have been great.......2007-08-10
This book had the potential to be a wonderful book, with engaging characters, and conflicts that most people could relate to. What spoiled it for me was the generous use of profanity and filthy language. The attitude the author and the characters have toward the "marital embrace" has nothing to do with marriage at all. She treats sexuality with a very offensive courseness. Minus the gutter language and a barn yard approach to intimacy, I might have liked this book.
Made Whole by being Broken.......2007-07-17
This is by far one of the most favorite books I have ever read. The weaving of the characters and their brokenness into healing and redemption is amazing. I highly recommend it. I read a borrowed copy and then had to go buy one so I could own it!
Book Description
Mental illness is often much more subtle than we imagine . . . and much more prevalent. This book is a deeply personal, yet practical, book for Christians who are clinically depressed or have been diagnosed with a mental illness.

Excellent Resource on Depression & Mental Illness.......2007-06-02
This book is vitally important to our understanding of the mechanics of depression and mental illness. After reading a plethora of books on the subject over the years, this is the ONE book that I am excited to recommend, and I highly recommend it.
"Broken Minds" is both practical, sensitive, compassionate, and very biblically sound. In fact, it should be required reading for every pastor, elder, ministry leader, counselor, or person who is wrestling with the effects of depression, PTSD, OCD, SAD, bipolar, panic disorder, and so much more. Having suffered clinical depression more than once in my life, I'm amazed at the volume of wisdom contained here. It's like five books in one. I believe God will use this book to to broaden the church's understanding, dispel the stigmas, and to literally save people's lives.
"...blessed is the church that has access to pastoral staff who understand both theology and the dynamics of major mental illness. The care of souls requires balance and discernment."
Amen to that. Many years ago I threw away my antidepressants, to prove to a Christian counselor and friends that God had healed my depression. I did okay for awhile but wasn't sleeping. Years later, unexplainable depression cloaked my mind again. Not only was I suffering from severe sleep deprivation by that time, I felt like a failure to need pills because of the stigma attached to them. Lo and behold, God began to show me that my brain is just different. My neurotransmitters get out of whack. Light and sleep deprivation will do me in. You'd think it wouldn't be rocket science to figure that out, but even the professionals were saying that my root causes of depression were unforgiveness or "anger turned inward." I was chastised by one person for "choosing depression" as a coping mechanism and response to life in general. That only served to push me further down the dark abyss.
Needless to say, it was frustating to spend over ten years processing a boatload of misinformation and bad counsel. Folks just didn't know better. But now they can!
I thank God for the Bloems. Their book is a lighthouse of spiritual truth and information that we've needed for too long. I plan to re-read it, and keep a ready-copy for reference. Let me shout it to the housetops: There IS hope because somebody finally understands!
Steve and Robyn helped to save my life. .......2007-03-13
Praise God for what He is doing through Steve and Robyn Bloem! Sadly, many lives have been lost to depression, but the Bloems have taken a strong stand on the front lines trying to keep more people from giving up on life. It's sad that the insidious belief, that one can merely "snap out of it," has pervaded even the walls of the Church. This book is especially helpful for those who know someone dealing with mental illness.
Refreshing Candor.......2005-12-17
Bloem and Bloem write a telling personal and biblical narrative for those dealing with depression. This is a rare book from a conservative Christian perspective. Many authors from a secular perspective have shared about their own battle with depression (William Styron, Lewis Wolpert) or bi-polar disorder (Kay Redfield Jamison), but few evangelicals have done so. Fortunately the stigma of depression is fading as Christians of today realize what Christians of the past have known--there are many causes of depression (for a powerful look at "famous" Christians who struggled with emotional issues, see "Genius, Grief, and Grace").
For an honest, open, biblical, theologically-sound, and helpful conservative Christian approach to hope for healing, "Broken Minds" should be tops on your list.
Reviewer: Bob Kellemen, Ph.D., is the author of "Soul Physicians," "Spiritual Friends," and "Beyond the Suffering: Embracing the Legacy of African American Soul Care and Spiritual Direction."

Poor Biblical standpoints.......2001-11-01
If you are a Christian searching for a book on physical abuse that offers Biblical advice, do NOT use this book. I was VERY upset by just the first few pages of this book. Paterson takes verses of the Bible, those regarding the husband's leadership of the household, and says they are wrong. For a man to to claim to have Biblical knowledge and call himself a Christian, I get very upset at his conclusion that the Bible is wrong. His view of male leadership is that they must make their wives obey their every whim which he believes leads to the cause of physical abuse. Perhaps Paterson should reread the Bible, and read MORE verses than the 2 or 3 he provided, so he can realize that male leadership meant SPIRITUAL leadership. The husband is called to be the servant-leader...one who serves his family and yet leads them spiritually and provides for them. How on earth does that lead to abuse??? Whereas some of the advice he gives is good, I take his words with a grain of salt. I do not appreciate his devaluing of the Bible, one he claims he lives for. Perhaps if he actually studied the Bible he might have a better case for himself and perhaps would provide more accurate and TRUE knowledge to the reader. And maybe he would also realize that abuse is the choicee of the abuser...the abuser is NOT a zombie so perhaps the author could do us all a favor and stop blaming a verse or two in the Bible on abuse. If he has problems with that, then he really needs to get right with God before he presumes to know what a verse means. And maybe it would do him well to actually study the Bible before writing about it. This is NOT a good book due it it's VERY bad interpretation of the Bible.

If It's Broken, You Can Fix It.......2000-06-24
Excellent book for the OD professional and the manager alike. In his usual very effective style, Dr. Jones' "lessons" are very readable, practical, and understandable, with just the right mix of humor, metaphors and stories. His use of actual experiences serve to effectively demonstrate the "real-life" usefulness and value of the techniques he describes. Every organization experiences dysfunction, to one degree or another, and can, therefore, benefit from the guidance Dr. Jones provides in this book.
Workplace dysfunction: more common than you realise!.......2000-04-03
During my long working career I have partcipated in numerous courses, got advice from the best consultants and read lots of complicated theories. This is the first book that gives clear and practical advice to identify and solve the problems of an dysfunctional organization. I recommend Jones's book warmly to everyone who is interested in improving the quality of the activity of his organization.
Lightbulb ON!.......2000-03-29
I believe that any reader will easily recognize the corporate situations that the author describes - it's the stuff we live with every day at work. The "aha!" comes along with the author's insightful discussions of HOW and WHY these situations come to exist, and why they are so very frustrating. But the best part is the practical "here's what you can do about it" discussions. This book shows you how you can have some impact, how these situations can be addressed constructively.
Great Resource for Government and Private Sector Managers.......2000-03-28
Thanks to Tom Jones for providing an invaluable resource for today's Managers -- both in Government and Private organizations -- for advice on addressing today's workplace problems.
We are not alone!.......2000-03-26
Those of us who are not CEO's or even at management level will find this book useful. It helped me recognize the signs of dysfunction in our organization, as well as identify methods to affect change or influence work behavior from a lower-level employee's perspective. I especially like the personality profiling information, which gives an explanation and a tolerance for the ways my fellow workers perform their work and react to pressure in the workplace. We don't all have to be the same to function as a cohesive and productive unit. Our strengths, weaknesses, and uniqueness can be useful when combined to make powerful teams and successful changes. I recommend this book as a helpful tool for any level of employee.

Book Description
If I had known...what giving birth was to cost me,
would I have dared to fall pregnant?
Yes, yes. A thousand times, yes.
Accalaimed novelist Susan Johnson found, at age thirty-five, that her arms began to feel "empty." Soon her desire to have a baby became overwhelming. She had no inkling then what motherhood would cost her -- or give her. But as she went on to experience pregnancy and birth, and their impact on her marriage, her health, and her heart, she recorded it all in a black-and-red notebook. Here, Susan Johnson takes that raw, potentially wrenching material and creates an inspirational work of autobiography.
In a hauntingly lovely account, Johnson portrays a woman transformed by motherhood, and a writer forever changed by a widening chasm of experience. Simple acts such as getting her newborn to breastfeed prove unexpectedly difficult. The husband she adores becomes a sparring partner, their newly purchased home a disaster, her time to write nonexistent. Then, just when she believes she may be getting her life together, she becomes pregnant again.
Soon ecstasy jostles against bewilderment, rage, and despair when she develops a rare complication of childbirth. Facing major surgery, Susan calls herself "a one-woman catastrophe, a small ruined country." She is also going to bed at night planning what she will write in the morning, burning to get words on paper.
The mesmerizing narrative she created is A Better Woman, a chronicle of love and courage, by turns poetic and searingly graphic. It should be required reading for every woman hungry to give birth -- and every mother yearning to have her deepest feeling heard.

Not inspirational .......2007-04-30
This author had a tough time with motherhood, especially post partum, there is NO doubt about that. I myself had some issues with my tearing and would have been horrified if I had read this book first. But, just reading this for inspiriation alone, I found myself very bored by it. I guess I just didn't like her writing style. She drones on and on and on. I found Anne Lamont's Operating Instructions a much more engaging memoir about motherhood.
A well written book.......2006-11-16
It is interesting to read Susan write about the two pregnancies she had and the resultant complication. It is also amazing to see how she entwines her life experiences in writing and draws something back into her life, a power which she gains from the understanding, knowledge of life through the writing.
At one end if you get to know things like controlled crying technique for bablies, happy vomiters - Just as I wonder why the 'morning sickness' was never mentioned - she had to deal with many other serious problems in life like managing her career, finances.
In a very simple style, she brings home many realisations in family realtions.
Book Description
Everyone knows him as Ralph Cifaretto on the HBO hit show The Sopranos. But before Tony, Carmela, Silvio, and Dr. Melfi took Sunday-night television by storm, Joe Pantoliano was one of America's busiest actors, giving unforgettable performances in such films as Memento, The Matrix, The Fugitive, and Risky Business. Now, the street-smart kid who grew up in Sinatra's hometown shares the stage with the eccentric and colorful wise guys from his family and neighborhood.
Fade in on the projects of Hoboken, New Jersey, during the fifties and sixties. That's little Joey, running numbers with his chain-smoking mother, Mary, so they can keep a roof over their heads. When he wasn't busy staying one step ahead of the bill collectors, he was learning the ropes from "Cousin" Florie: his "stepfather" and a wise guy whose connections to the Genovese family couldn't keep him out of jail for drug trafficking. Then there was Joey's real father, "Monk," a factory worker with a weakness for gambling at the track who was later reborn as a hearse chauffeur for the local funeral parlor.
With a winning blend of humor, charm, and pure showmanship, Pantoliano tells it like it was. From a connected Jersey street kid to a successful Hollywood actor who would, ironically, re-create his wise-guy boyhood in role after role, Who's Sorry Now is an irresistibly entertaining treat for anyone interested in this true-life "Soprano" and a real stand-up guy.

Right on the money..........2004-11-13
I'm a little late weighing in here, I just bought the book earlier this year and just now got around to reading it. Anyway, as an Italian American with an extended family that "got off the boat" in Hoboken, NJ, and as someone who ran some of the same streets that Joey once did, I can totally identify with the way Joe Pantoliano grew up and with the cast of "characters" that comprised his family, friends and neighbors. The book was extremely entertaining and written in a way that had me laughing out loud more than once. It's admirable that Joey expresses no bitterness or self-pity -- I think this is partially because people of his generation, in that place and time, just accepted the fact that family was the way it was, you didn't sit around feeling sorry for yourself, you just dealt and made a life for yourself! Also, in spite of the dysfunctionality, there was love there for Joey and I guess he chose to focus on that, whether it's just a trait he's been blessed with or if a little therapy helped him get there, it's still admirable and wonderful that he is able to see that & rejoice in it. I can understand how someone not from this subculture would see his mother and some of the other people in the book as complete monsters or animals but remember their shortcomings didn't come from an intention to be cruel, it came from the difficulties they faced as largely uneducated immigrants or children of immigrants starting with nothing in a new land. They were people who were weak and maybe more corrupt than most but not totally evil. If they knew better they would do better, so to speak. It's also nice to see the real, un-glamorized version of what it means to be a wise guy -- no mansions, Mercedes or limos for these connected guys. All in all, I enjoyed the book and read it practically in one sitting, the way the plot flowed was a little bit uneven and the writing style was a bit weak in spots which is why I give it a four instead of a five. But the story itself and the way Joe's viewpoint really came through, make it a good read for anyone who is fan of his work.
family life.......2003-07-30
The best part about this book is the author's unique voice. It's creative and to the point. The way he describes things carries the book.
The story itself is an interesting one, but it's more about his dysfunctional parents and their marriage than about the author. His mother is quite a trip. He had a rough time growing up but goofy as some of them were, his extended Italian family was a strong source of support and I think that's why he didn't drown in his parents' craziness.
This story is not about the mafia, although some people in it apparently have some bad connections. It's about a boy growing up in a close-knit, somewhat goofy family in 1960s New Jersey. And there's a lot of great insight into the family members and their peculiarities that makes it well worth the read.
A true Paisan'.......2002-12-17
I feel like I grew up with Joey Pants. His family is my family! I picked up this book because he played in one of my all time favorite movies, "Goonies," and I new his face, but not his name. He's just one of those kind of actors. I don't mind saying that I hate him in the Sopranos, 'cause who doesn't? But after reading this book, even I am proud of what he made of himself. And it has restored my faith in my own abilities. I now must write a book about my verbally abusive Italian-American man-hating mother. Although his family had problems, you still get the sense that in the end they all sit around toasting to love and family like the last scene in Moonstruck! It's a quick read and you'll love it!
Making it a love story.......2002-12-13
My brother got me this as a birthday gift - not something I would have bought myself. I figured it was one of those books where someone is cashing in on their current fame. It wasn't - it is an inner glimpse at a totally disfunctional family that I couldn't put down. Joey Pants was always one of those actors you love to hate - after reading this I can see where he got his inspiration - his nutsy Mommy (I have to admit I get a little uneasy reading about a guy in his 50's who still refers to his mother as Mommy). From this I have great admiration for Joey now - it is amazing what he overcame - the very things that would have caused most people to give up and accept their existance - inspired him to seek a better life. Anyone wishing to see the day-to-day live of a Goomba growing up in Jersey should grab this - a great read!
We are Joey ... sorry we bought the hype.......2002-10-30
I was lured by the bait of his Ralphie persona, the Imus interview and a good excerpt on Amazon, but the life of an insecure little fat kid is not charming. Mommy was a gangster's daughter who browbeat her poor husband and was ready to cheat anyone including her young son. Some of the "Cousin" Florie stories were ok, like hijacking the Seagram's truck from the Hoboken ferry, but a book? Fuggedaboutit!

This book was hysterical I couldn't put it down. Frank D'Amico is a comic genius who is an equally talented writer. Don't be like me and read this book on a airplane, you will laugh so hard everyone around you will think you are crazy. Frank stories paint vivid pictures. I could almost see the scene his father made in the Chinese restaurant and it brought tears to my eyes. If you are looking for some true, comical tales that will make you laugh and bring a smile to your face read this book. Even if you don't want that, read it anyway!
Unique, Obsurd and Outrageously Funny!.......2004-09-22
Written from the heart, Stand Up Guy takes you for a ride through a spectrum of emotions, finding humor in places that very few would imagine. Frank's unique style of writing pulls you in as you take a glimpse into his uproarious life. It's hilariously funny how this outrageous, deceptive character always teeters on the threshold of morality.

Compelling read- you won't want to put it down!!.......2006-08-09
I don't usually read books from this genre but a friend recommended it to me so I decided to check it out. So glad I did! It's first and foremost a well-written tale of loyalty and the friendship between two men as we follow their lives from childhood onward. The story is set against a backdrop of organized crime and gritty neighborhoods. It deftly weaves humor and violence with emotional highs and lows resulting in a compelling book that you won't want to put down!!

"A Stand Up Guy" is FABULOUS!.......2006-01-25
Though not usually a fan of this genre, I read this book on a recommendation and could not put it down. Brilliantly penned in the first person, "A Stand Up Guy" offers a perspective seldom seen in the blight of glamorized organized crime epics that pollute the cinematic landscape. Instead, this poignant tale of a mobster called upon to kill his best friend is both tragic and enlightening... with the perfect balance of humor to break the expertly crafted tension. I can't wait to read the next offering from these two gifted authors.

THIS BOOK CRIES OUT," ONE MORE TIME ",TO PESCI AND DI NIRO. I LOVED THIS BOOK AND READ IT IN ONE SESSION. ALTHOUGH IT'S FICTION , ITS GRAPHIC CHARACTERIZATIONS RING TRUE.
