Book Description

A wildly funny, irreverent tale of murder, mayhem, and the mob.

When up-and-coming chef Tommy Pagana settles for a less than glamorous stint at his uncle's restaurant in Manhattan's Little Italy, he unwittingly finds himself a partner in big-time crime. And when the mob decides to use the kitchen for a murder, nothing Tommy learned in cooking school has prepared him for what happens next. With the FBI on one side, and his eccentric wise guy superiors on the other, Tommy has to struggle to do right by his conscience, and to avoid getting killed in the meantime.

In the vein of Prizzi's Honor , Bone in the Throat is a thrilling Mafia caper laced with entertaining characters and wry humor. This first novel is a must-have for fans of Anthony Bourdain's nonfiction.

2 out of 5 stars Entertaining except................2007-01-07

True, this would have been a fun, fast read. It would have been even faster, say, 50 pages shorter, if he just took out one word. I'm afraid that one word spoiled it for me. On occasion is one thing, three times in every sentence is another. I prefer well written English, not trash talk. Sorry.

5 out of 5 stars That's tony..........2006-11-08

A NY chef for 30+ years his favorite books are crime dramas like "the friends of eddie coyle". This is his version of a crime drama but instead of writing from a legal or law enforcement perspective he writes what he knows about. The not so glamorous underbelly of the restaurant world. The focus of the story is tommy an Italian American sous chef who is serious about haute French cuisine. He develops a close friendship with his coked out chef who he admires for his knowledge and skill in the kitchen. The problem with tommy is that his sleezy mafia uncle gets him in deep and he never knows that the restaurant he works in is a set up for the feds to put guys like his uncle away.

Like any good crime drama it is gritty and rough. You find yourself feeling for tommy and his, predictament and despising the brutal mobsters. Bourdain might have spent almost all of his adult life in the kitchen but he doesn't back off at all in depicting violence. It won't take you long to read this book because once you start it is hard to stop a real page turner.

I believe bourdain's personality exists in both the tommy and the chef characters. The chef like tony is part French and has a drug problem something that tony admitted he once had in "Kitchen Confidental". But the tommy character is a punk rock loving kid who maybe resembles tony in his earlier days. Certainly there are some autobiographical moments here and the restaurant name is the same as the first restaurant tony worked at in provincetown. The dreadnaught..

5 out of 5 stars Love Anthony Bourdain........2006-11-04

Bone In the Throat is a great read -- atmospheric and full of quirky characters. Plenty of inside stuff about the New York restaurant scene, which Bourdain obviously knows like the master chef he is. Couldn't put it down, so read it straight through, and was very sorry to finish. Looking forward to more fiction by Bourdain.

5 out of 5 stars Oh Tony, I'm starting to have a crush.......2006-06-22

I have read you kitchen confidential, a cook's tour, and gone bamboo. Let me tell you, the first two were excellent. This one and gone bamboo were so simply written. You can tell he is definatly not an author per say, but he is so much fun you can't put it down. His writing needs some help. But who cares!! I love him. Please marry me.

4 out of 5 stars I was surprised.......2005-10-04

I was surprised at how the book held my interest. Although I really enjoyed Kitchen Confidential, I somehow thought Bourdain's writing ability might not cross over to fiction. This isn't a mystery at all; it might be better to call it crime fiction. His writing is direct and understated, no hyperbole, no "creative writing" attempts. For instance when he describes sex he uses straightforward and understated rather than overdone language, and it is much more effective than more blowsy prose. I like his sentence structure and choice of words. I could see the action and the characters very clearly in my mind while reading the book and didn't want to put it down. Warning though: this is pretty violent stuff.

Minette Walters is as much exterminator as novelist. With uncomfortable accuracy, her novels bring to the surface those creepy, crawly parts of the human psyche that most of us would rather keep hidden. Articulate, clever, and acutely observant, she eschews the standard trappings of psychological suspense and presents characters both vulnerable and deeply unpleasant.

Twenty years ago, M. Ranelagh found her Graham Road neighbor dying in a gutter. "Mad Annie" Butts, long persecuted for being black and for suffering from Tourette's syndrome, had had her skull shattered. So deeply did Annie's death--ruled an accident--affect M. that she has spent the last two decades secretly amassing proof that it was murder, and that the murderer lived in Graham Road. Her collection of evidence faithfully teases out the serpentine deceptions--and self-deceptions--woven into Annie's death; husband Sam, neighbors, friends, family, police, all are grist for the mill of M.'s occasionally unscrupulous research:

I suppose everyone has a pet subject that triggers their anger--with me it was my mother's wicked talent for stirring, with Sam it was his fear of Mad Annie and everything her death represented: the mask of respectability that overlaid the hatreds and the lies. He always hoped, I think, in a rather free interpretation of the karma principle, that if he refused to look beneath a surface then the surface was the reality. But he could never rid himself of the fear that he was wrong.

Although M.'s investigations focus on her neighbors (who range from eccentric to downright evil), they reveal just as much about her. Crafty, manipulative, and seething with rage, she carefully constructs her revenge on an unidentified murderer--and, one suspects, on the frustrations and limitations that define her own life.

The Shape of Snakes is both a gripping thriller and a stunning novel. Don't be surprised if it works its way into your library of favorites. --Kelly Flynn

                    Book Description

It took a few hours on a rainy winter night for a black woman known as "Mad Annie" to die in a gutter. It will take twenty years for the woman who found her to shape her neighbors' racism, the indifference of the police, and her own rage into the truth.

"Harrowing...These complex characters can be cunning, deceitful, even mad-which is exactly what makes them such absorbing company." (New York Times Book Review)

"Builds tension masterfully." (The Wall Street Journal)

                    Download Description

"In just seven years, Minette Walters has burst from the ranks of mystery writers to become a bestselling author the world over and today's preeminent practitioner of psychological suspense. With constant comparisons to P. D. James and Ruth Rendell and a growing American audience, Walters is poised for breakout success with The Shape of Snakes, her finest, and most finely wrought, novel yet. November 1978. The winter of discontent. Britain is on strike. The dead lie unburied, garbage piles in the streets-and somewhere in West London a black woman dies in a rain-filled gutter. Known as ""Mad Annie,"" she was despised by her neighbors. Her passing would have gone unmourned and unnoticed but for the young woman who finds her and who believes-apparently against reason-that Annie was murdered. But whatever the truth about Annie-whether she was as mad as her neighbors claimed, whether she lived in squalor as the police said, whether she cruelly mistreated the cats found starving in her house-something passed between her and Mrs. Ranelagh in the moment of death that binds this one woman to her cause for the next twenty years. But why is Mrs. Ranelagh so convinced it was murder, when, by her own account, Annie died without speaking? Why does the subject make her husband so angry that he refuses to talk about what happened that night? And why would any woman spend twenty painstaking years uncovering the truth-unless her reasons are personal? "

This book is the worst crime book i have ever read.....it doesn't make any sense at all.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing from a top author.......2005-07-31

A black lady, Miss Ann Butts, is found dead near her London home one night in November 1972. With severe injuries including a fractured skull and a broken arm, pools of blood and evidence of intoxication, it doesn't take the coroner long to pronounce "Death by Misadventure". It appeared that at the height of a winter storm in torrential rain, whilst staggering in the road, Miss Butts was hit a glancing but fatal blow by a passing car whose driver didn't notice.

Miss Butts had never slotted in socially with any of her neighbours who largely considered her to be a despicable outcast. She was despised for her colour, her drinking, her solitary lifestyle, her housing of stray cats, her poverty and as a person.

Another resident from further down the street, Mrs. M. Ranelagh, was not happy with the coroner's verdict believing him to have given the case little more than his cursory attention. Her initial efforts to probe the circumstances surrounding Ann's life style and tragic death make her the focal point of the other neighbours' prejudices and hatred. They are simply delighted to have Ann dead and buried and out of their lives. Apart form anything else imagine the beneficial impact on their property values without an "undesirable" resident in the street. Finally forced to leave home, Mrs. Ranelagh heads overseas with her husband and children only returning to England some 20 years later, the time in which most of this story is set. She now takes up the case with a vengeance, probing Miss Butts' medical history, her visiting vicar's records, witness statements at the inquest, actions of the neighbours at the time, actions of the investigating police officers and in fact not leaving a stone unturned.

This was a difficult story to tell with the victim having been deceased over 20 years and no reader sympathy having been engendered towards her. There is barely any suspense built up in the story and certainly no excitement. As Mrs. Ranelagh probes into the lives of the many neighbours and police the story becomes very complex with too many characters, too many complicit relationships, too many skeletons in various wardrobes and too many side stories. The plot is difficult to follow and perhaps the author recognises this by including a map of the houses (and their owners) in the street and a several photos of those neighbours at various social functions. There is simply not enough of substance to hold the readers' attention. The plot never rose to any heights and unfortunately drifted towards a wishy-washy conclusion. This was a disappointing book from an author who has written several thrillers of the highest quality.

You cannot ever fault a Minette Walters book. This superb story will keep you reading to the last. What makes this book so special is that it is not your standard crime novel with the police seen as always the good guys. It is obsessive until the end and you will really wonder where it is leading you. Love crime read this one.

                    5 out of 5 stars She's Back and She's Looking for Revenge.......2004-03-07

Something happened on Graham Street in London back in 1970. A woman was murdered, the people that lived there knew it, but hushed it up, called it something else and the one woman, Mrs. Ranelagh, who dissented, moved away.

The murder victim, a woman named Annie, was the only black person on the street. She also suffered from Tourette's Syndrome, so she muttered and sometimes ticked, or she cursed when she couldn't disguise her anger at the way she was treated. Of course the locals were unaware of her condition, so they assumed she was a drunken lunatic. Unfortunately for her, Annie knew something about the suburban debauchery in her community, which she tried to tell Mrs. Ranelagh before being murdered.

Annie's death was written off as an alcoholic accident and when Mrs. Ranelagh tried to tell the police of her suspicions, they conspired with her husband, mother and neighbors in writing her off as an neurotic woman with a persecution complex. Then she ends up being the butt of some very cruel bullying herself from her neighbors, and eventually leaves the country for Hong Kong for a couple of decades, but now she's back, looking for answers, plus maybe a bit of revenge, so now the detective work begins.

This story is a complex portrait of Mrs. Ranelagh as an avenging angel, or avenging devil, depending on your point of view. We sometimes wonder if she's a bit off her rocker as she tries to track down the murderer. And the real murderer begins to seem less and less important as we learn how many people actually contributed to what happened all those years ago in this great and gripping read.

5 out of 5 stars Ugly, Cruel, and Excellent.......2003-12-05

As a long term fan of great British mysteries written by Agatha Christie, P.D. James, Ruth Rendell, and Elizabeth George (even though she is an American), I looked forward to tucking into this book. I expected, as in others of the genre, that any violence would be viewed after-the-fact, and only through a prism of hedgerows, ancient chapels, and tea cozies. Ms. Walters makes it clear she will not allow the reader to employ a civilized, but distant, involvement in this book. Her use of photos depicting the characters in the book was one of the first things that impressed me. "This was a real person", she seems to be saying, "ugliness has a face, it is not an abstract concept." She continues to grate ever closer to the bone as she introduces pain after pain. I am an intense animal lover, and the abuse was horrible to read, but it happens, or it could, and Ms. Walters refuses to put the gloves on as she pounds your sensibilities. By mid-point in this book, I would have sold my soul for a mention of a scone. This book demands committment by the reader, and no one gets out of this read unscathed. My husband read the book after I did, and he was sceptical about the main character's obsession with finding out the truth behind a 20 year old question, that was answered to everyone's satisfaction years ago. I glanced over at him when he was nearing the end of the book, and noticed a tear on his cheek. "Now you know", I said. "Now I know", he said. And if you read this book, you will know pain.
