Mia Snow is a top cop with the Alien Investigation and Removal unit. She runs around dealing with illegal immigrants from a long way away, and extreme violence is good when it is necessary.

A partner is critically injured and she ends up in a relationship of sorts with an alien that reveals something about who she actually is, and why she can do what she can do better than other humans.

5 out of 5 stars Fussy Woman Gets Her Man - er - Alien.......2007-07-02

Strong female characters attract my attention, so I was drawn to Awaken Me Darkly by the foreboding Mia Snow. But what made me lay my money on the counter to buy the book was the description of Dallas Gutierrez set as a teaser in the front of my edition. Good Lord. Give me a partner like that any day of the week. Mia who? Oh, is that little girl going to factor into this story? That's nice...get back to Dallas...

So you can imagine how upset I was when Dallas got injured (great foreshadowing and leading into that on Gena Showalter's part, by the way), but the novel didn't just leave me disappointed there. Mia continued working with her other partners (even though some of that felt contrived, but, hey, when you've only got 306 pages, what's a writer to do?) and fighting for Dallas's life and working to rid society of evil bad guys. Now, I expected Mia to save Dallas, sacrificing herself in some way in the process, and end up sweating up the sheets with him. So imagine my surprise when Dallas remained impotently in a hospital bed while the alien huntress alternately beat up and slept with his enemy. Somehow, the talented Ms. Gena Showalter brought it all together with a satisfying ending. Wonderfully.

That's a gifted storyteller.

1 out of 5 stars is brutality equality?...........2007-06-13

LJ Lewis' review below pretty much sums up how I feel about this book as well.

I found this book a rehash of the whole "tough cookie" heroine and not in a good way. The behavior of the heroine, Mia, is brutal and off putting.

The storyline is that the Alien Hunters have complete authority over all Alien species, judge, jury and executioner. In just the first 100 pages alone you see the heroine committing various forms of police harassment and brutality, all the while thinking to herself how much she dislikes most Aliens. And she's supposed to fall in love with an Alien? Is this supposed to be enjoyable?

If this was a male lead I would consider him a villain-and I consider Mia Snow one equally. At one point she tells a suspect "you know I have no conscience" and I agree.

When did equality mean to be equally brutal?

0 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable.......2007-06-12

This book features a kick-butt heroine, which is something that I love in books. She doesn't take crap from anyone (or anything). The romance is nice but doesn't overwhelm the plot. Looking forward to the next title in this series.

5 out of 5 stars enjoy a good book.......2007-02-04

Whats not to like? You have adventure in a future Earth with lots of aliens, a beautiful woman with deadly fighting skills (she enjoys fighting), an awsome alien who loves her, along with bad guy & good guys and a big secret she uncovers that changes her life. People who like this type of stuff will also enjoy reading this book.

Book Description

In May 1195, Sir John de Wolfe is summoned to inspect a corpse in Exeter’s cathedral precinct. Aaron of Salisbury, a Jewish money-lender, has been found dead, his head enveloped in a brown leather money bag, a scrap of folded parchment clutched in his hand. On it is written “And Jesus went into the temple and overthrew the tables of the money-changers.” This is just the beginning of a strange series of murders in which an apt biblical text is left at the scene of the crime. Setting out to track down a literate and Bible-learned killer in an age when only one percent of the population can read or write, Sir John deduces that he is looking for a homicidal priest.

5 out of 5 stars The Grim Reaper/Crowner John #6.......2007-04-13

The Grim Reaper is the sixth Crowner John mystery. The series is set in the late 12th century with the establishment by Richard the Lionheart of the office of Crowner,or Coroner. This was partly a fundraiser for the Crown and partly an attempt to check the worst excesses of the Sherriffs. Sir John de Wolfe is the first Crowner of Devon, with home and office in Exeter.
In the Grim Reaper, a Jewish moneylender is found murdered. A scrap of parchment containing a biblical quotation is tucked into the corpse's hand. At a time when only 1%of the population are literate and fewer still familiar with biblical texts, suspicion immediately falls on the clergy of the town. There are about 100 priests and other clergy in Exeter - many of whom are decidedly odd so there is no shortage of candidates for suspicion, including the Crowner's clerk, who is a defrocked priest.
Other murders follow, all with biblical references left with the corpses in varying ways by the murderer.
Tensions mount, not only because of the increasing body count but also due to conflicts between the church and secular authorities, political factions, preparations for the arrival of King's Court Justices for the first time in three years, and, most especially, due to the continuing power struggle between the Crowner and Sherriff.

This series is very well balanced between solid history, clever mystery, entertaining characters and, as the author is a forensic pathologist, the murder and mayhem are very detailed too - sometimes startlingly so.
The author also manages to avoid two of the pitfalls of medieval mystery series - this book does not contain artificial antique language and it can be comfortably read without having read the earlier books in the series.
This is fun stuff for any historical mystery fan and might especially appeal to readers of Michael Jeck's Templar series which is set in the same area a couple of centuries later.

5 out of 5 stars Sixth Book in a Wonderful Series.......2006-12-17

Bernard Knight, or to give him his correct title, Professor Bernard Knight, CBE, was a pathologist to the Home office until 1980 when he was appointed Professor of Forensic Pathology at the University of Wales College of medicine, 1980. He has written the extremely successful Crowner John series of medieval mysteries, of which there are now ten or eleven books, His character Crowner John is certainly among my favourite characters in medieval mysteries.

May, 1195 and Sir John de Wolfe, better known to friend and enemy alike as Crowner John, Devon's first county coroner is faced with a series of serial murders. The first one is the suffocation of a Jewish money lender, followed by that of a London harlot and a priest and burgess suspected of abusing young boys. The common denominator that links all of the murders is a Biblical text left at the scene of each of the crimes.

Sir John knows that only one per cent of the population can read or write and for anyone to be literate and have knowledge of the Bible points to the fact that they are more than likely a priest. The problem is that there are a multitude of churches in Exeter, so the killer could be one of a large number of clerics, but Sir John takes his new post very seriously and will not let anything stand in his way of solving the crime, even the interfering Sheriff, Sir Richard de Revelle who is also John's brother-in-law and is not at all happy at Sir John being given the post of Devon's first coroner.

5 out of 5 stars Better and Better.......2003-05-19

Bernard Knight again produces an authentic period mystery in The Grim Reaper. Characters finely drawn, meaning the reader feels as if (s)he knows the people; settings so realistic the reader can almost see, smell and hear what is going on. In addition to all this is an intriguing medieval mystery, true to the times, solved by that all too human protagonist, Crowner John de Wolfe, assisted by his cohort Gwyn and clerk Thomas de Peyne. The Crowner's unsympathetic wife and his mistress Nesta add to this continuing saga set in twelfth century England. A VERY good read!

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for those Interested in modern Military History.......2001-10-03

This as a facinating read. It dispells myths and misconceptions
perpetrated by Hollywood and most histories. It gives the reader
insight into the development and tactical employment of a weapon that has and continues to change the modern world.

As a reader well versed in military history, the chapters relating to the competitive development of the Maxim
and Gatling were truly news to me, as was the impact of the Maxim on European colonialism. The DeBeer's diamond monopoly owes its existence to the Maxim gun...as a jingle went at the time.." whatever happens, we have got, the Maxim gun and they have not."

The author's treatment of the evolution of tactical employment of the weapon is also very interesting and informative. Most modern non-military readers would not know what a machine gun barrage is, knowing only of it's use in direct fire mode. The machine gun barrage is firing the weapon at a high angle such that the resulting stream of projectiles plunge at a high angle in a parabolic curve, resulting a area known as "beaten ground". This is an area saturated by bullets that in practice is a lozenge shaped area. No aiming at individual targets is required. This technique was used as recently as the Falklands war where a section of medium machine guns expended hundreds of thousands of rounds in support of a single assault.

This is a must read for anyone interested 20th century military history.

4 out of 5 stars A remarkable introduction to machine guns history.......2000-04-21

This book is not (yet another) thick reference guide to machine-guns. Instead it is a remarkably comprehensive yet concise introduction to the history of machine gun development, production and usage from the earliest manual guns of the American Civil War to the sophistication of equipment in service of modern armies. Ford's favourite "pet" period is the 1900s-1950s era - a classic period in the refinement and perfection of recoil-operated machine guns (the "fifty-cal" Browning M2 circa 1928 is still in use throughout the world).

From my humble perspective, the author is particularly successful in his bid to follow four separate aspects of machine-gun's history:

- technological advances
- production and logistics
- tactical usage and strategic impact
- "human factor"

Most other books on the subject tend to select only one of those and discuss it at length. Ford's aim is much broader. He successfully manages to carry out those separate threads of argument at once. All four are seamlessly threaded into a single narration. It is a pleasure to see as complicated yet orderly mosaic of dependencies emerges. Suddenly lots of old historical facts start to make much more sense and cease being "strange things old generations did". You could see how human ingenuity, incompetence, politics and greed on one side and weather and mud on the other shaped machine-guns as we know them today.

Throughout the narration, the author keeps precise balance between excellent readability and technical meticulousness. He never drools in extreme dry technicalities. On the other hand, quoted contemporary accounts are concise and well chosen to emphasize important technical or tactical arguments, not just fill the pages with military glamour or gore of warfare. Descriptions of selected important models are skilfully incorporated into narration. The performance details given are carefully constrained to important bits, so text does not deteriorate into a comprehensive yet boring enumeration of numbers and hardware components, the flaw many of Christopher Chant's books (for example) suffer from.

By its very nature, such book cannot be encyclopaedic and include everything. Nevertheless, by putting particular machine-guns into historical context, it inspires reader to get back to related works and browse through them with a new interest. I quite recommend reading this book alongside some nice and heavy reference encyclopaedia of small arms. You will get lots of unexpected fun.

Perhaps I should explain why I haven't given this book full 5 stars:

This book only major drawback is utter and complete absence of drawings and/or action diagrams. Ford does a remarkable job of explaining the mechanism of action of particular guns and interesting technical arrangements using text only. However remarkable his control of language might be - such descriptions are sometimes hard to follow. For the person new to the subject this could be annoying and somewhat diminish the pleasure of an otherwise excellent book.

Same applies to photographs which are few, poorly chosen and often placed out of context.

Saying that - the text alone is brilliant. The book is worth buying just for the sheer reading pleasure sake.

4 out of 5 stars One of the Best MG books........1999-12-27

The Grim Reaper is an excellent machine gun book, and like some other people, I read it cover-to-cover in about four days. There are 22 pictures in all, and yes, there could have been more. Other than that, the text is easy to understand and it is very informative. The book starts with the beginning of the machine gun and ends with modern machine guns. The book described several military engagements with detail. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in machine guns or firearms in general.

3 out of 5 stars Nice book for any personell around tanks.......1999-08-31

It's a nice book on tanks and how to destroy them. Surprisingly recent information, for an old looking book. Not a glossy photo book, but good facts and good language.

5 out of 5 stars Insiteful and Astounding and Objective review.......1999-05-24

The development of the machinegun and its effects on world politics, colonialization and warfare are incredibly well reviewed by Ford. This is not a field manual about how to service these weapons, but rather a look at how this (relatively) simple machine has changed warfare and politics and the world. I learned a tremendous amount about how this machine is used in combat and how those uses changed from WWI to Desert Storm. The technical review is adequate and the discussion of applications and deployment is phenomenal. The accounts of soldiers further illustrate the importance of this weapon to the modern battlefield. I read this book cover to cover in less than 5 days and plan to reread it soon. It is truly a must have for any serious military science or 20th century history library. Five stars don't rate high enough for this thoughtful review of Maxim's machine and its many children.

Mr. Henebry does a very good job describing his personal experience in WWII both in flying attack aircraft and leading the 3rd Attack Group. This book isn't quit as good as Wrecking Havoc, but does describe Mr. Henebry's personnal experience. On a positive note, Mr. Henebry provides a very good description of several raids on Rabaul and and insight into Pappy Gunn and others from the Southwest Pacific. This is a personal history vs. a unit history.

5 out of 5 stars On Aviation, War, Blood, True Guts and the Cost of Freedom.......2003-07-25

Without a doubt, the freedoms that our generation enjoy today are due to the fact that the U.S. won World War II. We won the war because of the likes of General John Henebry.
In his new book, "The Grim Reapers - At Work in the Pacific Theater," the daring and brave General John Henebry takes you in to the cockpit of his bomber to chronicle many of his 219 WWII combat missions. Beginning with his freshman year at Notre Dame in 1936 and concluding with the moving farewell and departure of 71 year-old General Douglas MacArthur from Japan in 1951, master storyteller General Henebry retells the incredible events of his life and his bravery during this period of do-or-die for our country. This outstanding book is about a group of brave flyers and military planners who had a job to do and did it with near perfection. A great read written by a true American war hero.

      Book Description

Col. Lou Martin, USAF (ret.) obtained his pilot's license at age 17, and for the next 50 years flew aircraft as diverse as the Piper Cub, single-engine jets, and large military and civilian transports. He was an Air Force pilot of 22 years, a Japan Airlines Captain for five, a chartered pilot in Iran for three and an FAA pilot inspector for 19. During his 19,000 hours in the air he experienced many interesting -- and sometimes dangerous -- events that could have ended his exciting flying career. In Close Encounters With the Pilot's Grim Reaper he presents a pilot's true story, in autobiographical format, of close encounters he experienced during sixty years of military and civilian flying, plus encounters, some fatal of aviation colleagues. With 540 pages and more than 80 illustrations. These photos embellish the reader's concept while they accompany Lou as he reminisces, with remarkable clarity, his fascinating life. For those of you who have read his award-winning book, Wings over Persia, you are in for another great read!

      Customer Reviews:

      4 out of 5 stars Author's Comments .......2007-08-06

Mr. Schmidt's book review (see below)was complimentary but excessively critical. He states that the book belongs in the library of aviation enthusiasts along with books written by Tex Johnson, Chuck Yeager and Bob Hoover. (This was not surprising as it parroted unsolicited comments from other readers. Mr. Sam Elder recently wrote. "Dear Lou, I just finished reading Close Encounters with the Pilot's Grim Reaper which you autographed at EAA AirVenture 2007. What a great read. I read unitl my eyes hurt. You have lead an amazing life. It brouight back many memories. Thanks.")

Mr. Schmidt, in an unseemly manner, pointed out what he considers several imperfections along with criticizing self-published books in general. There are many well-written and interesting self-published books but most book stores shun them out of a sense of protectionism. If it were not for these books many war veterans would never be able to tell their story. He then engages in a disingenuous false statement that I did not employ the services of an editor. If he had read the entire book, he would have noted that I employed the services of an editor and mention her by name, along with her qualifications, on page three under "Acknowledgments." He was also critical of the Microsoft Word, font 12, text used. I have received numerous favorable comments on this style text from readers stating that it is easy to read, especially in dim light for those requiring reading glasses.

Mr. Schmidt states that there are numerous spelling errors, another disingenous statement. I am sure that out of 227,135 words, 540 pages and 80 photos one may find a few errors. (I frequently find spelling errors and omissions in books published by recognized publishers, and in leading magazines and newspapers, which I assume have all been reviewed by editors.) He also stated that there are references to things that are not explained elsewhere, that the timeline is not clear, and that I used real names when referring to divisive and interesting colleagues. On page two, under Notes, I state, "A few liberties were taken in the sequencing of events, but they all happened" and "The use of pseudonyms when referring to a few colleagues were employed." Apparently, he did not read these comments as well.

Mr. Schmidt seems to have been offended by a pious sensibility toward my exposing life as it was, not what he thinks it should have been. I doubt if he served as a combat crew member in a wartime enviroment. He infers, incorrectly, that I had a girl in every port but unfortunately, this was not the case. The personal medical matter he found objectionable was most likely the Beef Tapeworm I picked up in Nothern Thailand during the Vietnam War, which was a difficult parasite to kill. Surprisingly, following his harsh criticism he gives the book "Four Stars" and states, "Still, the reader is not put off by these problems and Martin's book remains an overall good read."

I appreciated his taking the time to write such an interesting review, which I believe will increase sales. Now numbering over 600. I hope Mr. Schmidt finds the time to review my other book "Wings Over Persia" which was rated the best aviation writing by the Minesota Aviation Hall of Fame for 2004. It is a true account of my flying as a civilian charter pilot in Iran (1976 to 1979) during the overthrow of the Shah.

4 out of 5 stars Good read, but unpolished in many ways.......2007-07-10

I enjoyed reading Lou Martin's autobiographical book, "Close Encounters With the Pilot's Grim Reaper". It is, for the most part, clearly written and the author's style is engaging. I feel that this book belongs in the library of any aviation enthusiast, along side the biographies of Tex Johnston, Chuck Yeager, Bob Hoover, etc; even though Martin's exploits don't have the same historical significance.

The book does have some flaws, all typical of self-published books by untrained authors, especially those who did not employ an editor. The entire body of text is set in a sans-serif font, rather than a serifed font such as virtually all other books use; this increases eye strain. There are numerous spelling errors, as well as homophonic errors. The text often refers to incorrect figure numbers in the illustration section. Many times there are references to things that are not explained elsewhere, even though the text will say, "More explanation on this later". Sometimes the timeline is not clear. All of these issues would have been addressed by a good editor. Still, the reader is not put off by these problems, and Martin's book remains accessible and an overall good read.

It is also brave of Martin to mention real names of people, often in reference to personal details. The reader wonders if any of those people are still alive to object to having their dirty laundry exposed in this manner. Out of fairness, it is worth saying that Martin is not shy about detailing the many instances when he did improper things, such as risky behavior while flying, engaging in sexual relations with 'girls in every port' while he was married, and very personal medical matters are also disclosed.

5 out of 5 stars "Close Encounters With the Pilot's Grim Reaper".......2007-03-15

"Close Encounters With the Pilot's Grim Reaper" became a very personal book that I slowly read and savored each chapter as it told of dreams unfulfilled. The writing style or should I say the story telling style of the author draws one in so that you live it along with him, and it did not hurt that I have visited or lived in the same places during my 65 years of life.

I am sure there are thousands like myself who had the same dream and they too will live them though the pages of this book as I did. Yes, I have been successful in my chosen field and received the recognition of my peers and those I serve, but I would gladly give it all back to have walked in the author's shoes as this is how strong my dream was. If one ever dreamed of become a military pilot this book is a must read.

Thanks Lou for the many hours we did spend together cloud dancing and you teaching me how to do loops and rolls in the T-6 and T-34, and thanks for letting me live my dream through your book.

For all military pilots and maintenance types, this book sure brings back the memories. On the flight line, in flight and TDY's, he tells it like it really was and doesn't leave anything out. The personal stuff, the women, the training and the flying, it's all there and very well done.

A must read for all pilots !

      4 out of 5 stars Realities.......2007-02-26

Lou Martin's autobiography tells of both the good and the bad during a lifetime of flying. He came close to the Grim Reaper, many times, and knew others who did not survive such meetings. Thanks to the examples of WWII pilots, Martin learned to plan, train and be ready for the unexpected that could have been his last flight. Along the way, he tells of exepriences that included piloting a C-82 in France, F-100 fighters at Misawa AB, Japan and the C-133 transport. After the Air Force, life as an airline pilot in Japan and an FAA inspector gave more opportunites to tweak the Grim Reaper's scythe. Along the way, Martin had other non-flying adventures that livened up his life in interesitng ways. A great book that I thoroughly enjoyed.

          Book Description

One bite from a forbidden fruit transforms Adam (from the Garden of Eden) into the Grim Reaper. Stripped of his humanity and consciousness, he is eternally burdened with the task of collecting and delivering all the souls from earth to their afterlife. Unbeknownst to the Grim Reaper, there are higher powers in conflict for where the human souls are to forever exist.

God had been absent from heaven, creating new worlds and a new species which he created in his image. The angel named Lucifer corrupted with sinister power and feelings of abandonment, challenged God. Lucifer and his small band of rebel angels were exiled from heaven and forced to live in the new realm of hell which has tainted them. Lucifer out of jealousy inflicts God's new creation with sin, his way of not being forgotten. The ruler of hell discovers a way he can rejoin God in heaven. Every human on earth must perish. But Lucifer is not powerful enough to destroy all the life on the planet himself. Through his sinful manipulation Lucifer plots to unleash Armageddon on earth, and take back his rightful place in heaven.
