Loved It.......2007-05-22
This book was really good. Mrs. Ray did an awesome job in developing the characters and stressing the point of forgiveness, repentance and faith. I found it very refreshing that she didn't try to sugar coat or make excuses for Jana's character nor that of her mother and father. Although this book is fiction, it mirrors real life in the fact that not all family relationships are perfect and sometimes people don't forgive and forget. As a parent it was hard to grasp how uncaring and often times down right cruel Jana's parents were toward her, but I believe it's extremely common in many families today. I loved this story. After reading this I aspire to be as caring, giving, generous and humble as Olivia.
Inspiring.......2007-03-20
Enjoyed this book. It had some of everything. Love, betrayal, secrets, forgiveness, suspense and not one but two romantic storylines. Well done Francis Ray.
Any Rich Man Will Do -- Well, Not This Time Around.......2007-03-16
Again, Ms. Ray have given the readers a wonderful book of love and down right earth shattering facts. Sometimes we are faced with circumstances whereby we may think or even say, "Any Rich Man Will Do." Well, read this book to find out that all the time this is not so.
This is Jana Franklin's story, rich spoiled girl down on her luck and literally put out until she stumbles upon Olivia Maxwell and Olivia's brother, Tyler Maxwell. This book is a great eye opener, great romance included. A must read, it deals with life in all aspects and what can happen, indeed what goes up must come down. It's also a story of compassion and real friendship.
Jana thought at this time in her life that "Any Rich Man Will Do" for what she needed at this very moment. After meeting Tyler, Jana thought, "Oh well, he is rich, so what the heck." However, Jana did not count on her actually falling in love with Tyler, who was not only rich, but was a respectable, likeable man who knew how to treat a female -- with respect, dignity, and honesty. Tyler is truly a brother that any woman would love to have in her life and actually deserves to have.
Ms. Ray has put Jana and Tyler together when Jana needed a decent and honorable man at the high point in her life. This is an eye opener to let women out there who are down on their luck or just plain vulnerable know to keep the faith, hold out and truly there is some man out there just waiting for you. Also, know that all the time, it is not how much a man is worth to you, but how much you are worth to that man -- not in monetary value, but in spirit, kindness, personality, and most of all love -- which is the greatest asset anyone can offer another person.
Enjoyed the story, Ms. Ray. Thanks for giving us another great one! Love you.
Money, Money, Money.......2006-12-17
In this story we have, Jana Franklin, a woman that has always had everything her heart has desired, expect true love. Jana was raised to believe all men were ever good for was their money, but as her life spirals out of control and she ends up flat busted, living in a shabby motel, wondering how she's going to make it, she starts to regret the choices she's made. Out for one last shot at finding a man to take care of her she meets a family that will teach her what's important in life, and how to stand on her own two feet. Through this process she'll find that a mans true value is not measured by the size of his wallet, but by the size of his heart, and what it's like to have a true friend.
Francis ray never lets me down.......2006-08-10
i thought for some reason the book would be a bore, shame on me. Its a nice pleasant and sometimes HOT read. I really enjoyed this book. i cant wait to read dreaming of you

At 13, Rosie plays a gangly, pigeon-toed second fiddle to her juicy, sexy friend Simone. The two are junior tennis champs who often cart home trophies. But driven by the gnawing fear that she's a loser, Rosie starts to cheat. Meantime, boy-crazy Simone dabbles in off-court disaster. Up in the bleachers a weird loner named Luther obsessively follows Rosie's games, while at home her mother wrestles her own demons. Anne Lamott (Operating Instructions) has turned in a fair depiction of the blood and bones of adolescence that's thankfully leavened by sharp humor and transcendent moments. The novel is uneven and heavy-handed at times, but often rewarding.
Book Description
With the same winning combination of humor and honesty that marked her recent nonfiction bestsellers, Operating Instructions and Bird by Bird, Anne Lamott's new novel gives us an exuberant, richly absorbing portrait of a family for whom the joys and sorrows of everyday life are magnified under the glare of the unexpected.
Rosie Ferguson, in the first bloom of young womanhood, is obsessed with tournament tennis. Her mother is a recovering alcoholic still grieving the death of her first husband; her stepfather, a struggling writer, is wrestling with his own demons. And now Rosie finds that her athletic gifts, once a source of triumph and escape, place her in peril, as a shadowy man who stalks her from the bleachers seems to be developing an obsession of his own.
Crooked Little Heart asks big questions in intimate ways: What keeps a family together? What are the small heartbreaks that tear at the fabric of our lives? What happens to grief when it goes underground? And what road must we walk with our flawed and crooked hearts?
Brilliantly written, inhabited by superbly realized characters, funny and human and wonderfully suspenseful, Crooked Little Heart is Anne Lamott writing at the peak of her considerable powers.
Customer Reviews:
"Crying withheld feels sometimes like dying...".......2007-06-04
I really loved this book, mostly because I could empathize with Rosie's middle school angst and insecurites. But I also admire (and envy) Lamott's writing in general - she creates beautiful phrases such as "it was so hot that the only things moving outside were the crickets and the anorexics" and "the sun smelled warm, like laundry in the dryer, like melting yellow crayons." Her writing startles me sometimes, so I have to stop and reread. I would never think to associate melting yellow crayons with the sun, for example...but the comparison makes perfect sense.
Simone, Rosie's best friend, wasn't one of my favorite characters at first, but her story turned out to be heartbreaking, and I was genuinely sad for her. I can still see her sitting on the bench with Rosie, waiting for Jason. Collapsed dreams, humiliation, and the double standard all follow - as usual, the male is not castigated by society. The male is not kicked out of the country club.
I liked Rae, Rosie's mom's best friend, the successful artist. When teased for her religious views, I was so proud of Rosie for defending her, reminding everyone that America "was founded on the principle of religious freedom," and no one should trivialize a woman's deepest feelings.
I also liked Luther, the mysterious observer at the tennis tournaments. I thought he was creepy at first, but he paid attention to Rosie when no one else did (her mother might be spacing out as she retreats into the past, and her stepfather might be checking his messages). Luther helped her, was there for her, so Rosie was never alone during a game.
"Too bad about the hair.." - when Rosie's coach said this to her (upon seeing Rosie's newly shorn head), it only confirmed my belief that he's sexist, that his voice echoes a society which regards hair as something that defines women, gives them value, forms stereotypes. Alas, Simone had glorious hair, and look what happened to her...her value appeared to decline in the end.
When a woman chops off most of her hair, it is one of the most liberating things in the world. I wish I'd gotten rid of mine when I was Rosie's age, instead of waiting until I was 24.
Growth experience for mother & daughter.......2007-05-12
This is a wonderful sequel to "Rosie" by LaMott, but stands well on its own. It's a "coming of age" genre.
Kept thinking it would get better...It didn't........2007-03-09
It took me about 6 weeks to finish this book. I usually finish a book I like in about 2-3 days, but I just couldn't get into this one. I kept thinking it would get better...It didn't. I read one other Anne Lamott novel and never finished it. Since so many readers had raved about this book, I decided to keep reading to see why it was so highly praised. The other reason I kept reading was because it seemed like there was something dark in Elizabeth's past that was lurking and waiting to come to the surface, but I didn't feel like this ever really got explained. It seemed like the storyline kept building up and up, and then just sort of fizzled out. I sort of cared about Rosie, more toward the end then at any other time. I barely cared (if at all) about her mother, Elizabeth. There were some good descriptions and some wonderfully poetic passages, but they didn't make up for the lack of care that I felt for the characters. I cared more about the supporting characters (Lank, Rae, and Charles) than I did about the developed main characters. I really disliked some of the comparisons/similes that the author made; especially the ones about likening the characters to birds. Since I tried to read two Anne Lamott books and didn't like either of them, maybe I just don't like her writing in general. From the looks of many of these comments, she seems to have lots of fans that love her writing! I'm just not one of them.
Lovely story.......2006-12-24
A rather heartwarming novel of adolescence, grief, sexual awakening, and tennis set in the Bay Area of California.
Beautifully written, but just not to my taste.......2004-07-29
After a slow start, I gradually fell in like with the writing style and people in this coming-of-age novel. I say "in like" because I have discovered I'm not overly partial to character-driven novels. Still, Lamott writes gorgeous descriptive sentences and uses lovely similes. Her grasp on the dynamics of a blended family and the social pressures on modern teenage girls seems effortless and without artifice.
It's a nice piece of work and well worth reading. It's just not to my taste.

Wild About "Crooked Hearts".......2004-04-08
If I had to pick my favorite romance novel, this would be the one. I read this book when it was first published by the late Topaz division of Penguin, when the book had a cover that actually matched its contents. I was lucky to grab another copy before it went to a hearts and flowers format. Don't be fooled by the cover -- this is an adventure story with a dash of romance and much humor. Grace and Reuben are the most appealing of charcters -- funny, romantic, and hard-boiled all at once. The opening scene is memorable: con-woman Grace, disguised as a nun, pulls up her skirts to re-adjust the gun she has hidden under her habit. What she doesn't know is that the "blind" man seated across from her in the stagecoach is another grifter, taking in the view from behind his dark glasses. Set in California in the 1880s, this book makes you wish you had seen old San Francisco, before the earthquake. It is in the zany tradition of the cult TV program "Brisco County, Jr." with chase scenes, narrow escapes, bad guys with issues, and sex that can be both humorous and tender. If you are feeling low, this is a book to lift your spirits and tickle your funny bone at the same time.
A SWEET book to read again and again.......2003-04-12
I read Patricia's other books and I always felt her books were lacking in some way. Not with this book. This book was a laugh out loud, funny, and sexy book about two thiefs with insercurities. They are not perfect, but they are good people who deserved the ending they got.
Clever and Touching.......2002-08-22
I am so glad to see Patricia Gaffney enjoying well-deserved success -- especially as it means a return to print of one of my all time favorite romances. Crooked Hearts has it all, wonderful, unique, fully fleshed characters, witty dialogue, adventure and a deep, soul-fulfilling love. Not only is there one copy on my keeper shelf, but two-- one to lend, and one to cherish.
Wildly Entertaining, Excitingly Romantic!.......2002-01-22
Grace and Reuben are a couple of con artists who meet by chance while traveling (in disguise, of course: she, a nun; he, a blind spaniard.) Hilarity and hijinks ensue as a result of one's belief that the other can't see, etc. Meeting one another was an intriguing diversion, nothing more, considering the two would probably never cross paths again...that is, until their stagecoach is robbed, their "winnings" are stolen, and their false identities exposed in the process. As help is sought from the authorities after the bandits are subdued, Grace and Reuben, fearing questioning by the police, make their escape on horseback with nothing but the clothes on their back and a small, mysterious chinese figurine that seemed to be of special interst to the robbers.
Back at Reuben's San Fransiscan apartment, the two decide to partner up, just for a scam or two, until they can recoup their lost winnings. They develop a certain friendly-but-somewhat-suspicious camraderie, and, finding that they work rather well together, decide to see what they can get out of the figurine.
Grace and Reuben are wonderful characters - quite a refreshing change from the typical romance genre. Both are somewhat jaded and devious, yet the reader sees glimpses of basic goodness and kindness - even innocence - that only desperate circumstances and hard luck has served to temper in both of them.
The book drew me in immediately - action-packed from the get-go. The dialogue was quite clever, with lots of quite funny moments, as well as a couple of intricately impressive con schemes (where DOES Ms. Gaffney come up with this stuff?) Reuben and Grace are endearing, and I think any reader would soon find themself cheering for this couple.
Grace and Reuben develop a certain honor-among-thieves trust and friendship, and even grow to depend on one another (though they'd never admit it), and though there is a mutual attraction, they each inwardly determine to keep things neutral...until they find themselves caught up in the dangerous world of a deadly chinese mafia in Chinatown, the leader of which wants the little figurine quite desparately...and wants Grace even more.
Though the story is lively and witty, a deep, abiding love is developing between Grace and Reuben that is really quite touching and very deeply sexy. Reuben, though a shaking coward where knives are involved, a devious con-man when the moment calls for one, and a comic with an appreciation for the absurd, is probably the sexiest hero I've ever "met" in the pages of a book!
Crooked as they come...and all the better for it........2000-01-24
Very sad to see that this title is out of print. The he & she of this book are both con artists who constantly try to put one over on each other until they band together and in the process fall in love. This is a refreshing dialogue between two equals both of whom do not want to give up their illegal activities or their independence. And we love them for it....The repartee between the two main characters constantly sizzles and provides many laughs! Pick this one up if you can find it. Another thoughtful & sparkling romance from the always wonderful Patricia Gaffney!
Book Description
From a luminous new voice in suspense fiction comes this wise, witty, and uplifting novel--a mystery with heart that will illuminate more than just whodunit and why. In her stunning debut, Cristina Sumners, an Episcopalian priest brings to life an unforgettable town, a less-than-perfect crime, and two flawed souls hoping to solve the mysteries of life, death...and possibly even love.
Life isn’t easy for Tom Holder. Middle-aged, appallingly married, and bored out of his wits, Tom is Chief of Police in Harton--an idyllic New Jersey town where, in spite of its eccentric cast of characters, nothing ever seems to happen. His dreary routine is brightened only by his visits to St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, where he can be sure of seeing the clever Reverend Kathryn Koerney, with whom he is secretly and hopelessly smitten. Tom is quietly wishing for a nice, interesting crime, if only to have something to discuss with the lady priest, who seems almost as confused by their nonrelationship as he is. He’s about to get all that--and a whole lot more than he bargained for.
When an affluent housewife is reported missing by her clearly hostile husband, Tom not only has a bona fide murder mystery on his hands, he has a perfect excuse to enlist Kathryn’s help. The only person who may know what happened to Grace Kimbrough is a feverish child, and Tom--past master at nosy neighbors, flirtatious shut-ins, and the usual small-town neurotics--has precious little experience with children. Now, with a second woman missing, Tom’s and Kathryn’s sense of urgency to learn the truth about the disappearances--and about their feelings for each other--deepens.
Together Tom and Kathryn will unravel more than just the secrets holding together the seemingly peaceful town, secrets that may conceal a crime of passion, jealousy, and rage. They will probe the mysteries of their own all-too-fallible, all-too-human hearts. And the miracles that might, just might, occur--even after a lifetime of playing it too safe.

Customer Reviews:
witty and pretty.......2006-08-11
A novel with a young, rich, attractive Episcopal priest in old, rich, attractive almost-Princeton NJ runs many risks. Sumners falls prey to none of them. Her characters are terrific -- from a girl we don't see enough of to a husband we see too much of -- and the two main characters, Koerney and Holder, have interesting interior lives into which we are invited to gaze. Sumners hits not one wrong note with quite a variety of motivations, and her gloss of biblical, Book of Common Prayer, and Dorothy L Sayers quotations and adaptations makes the prose a delight.
It's a quick read, but not because it's fluffy. It isn't. It will be interesting to see if Sumners continues the high standards in the next two books. Brava!
Revolting romance between priest and married man.......2005-06-28
No one who loves romance, or is religious, could read this without being revolted by the romance between a female priest and a married man.
Hard to put down.......2004-05-16
I enjoyed reading Cristina Sumners first mystery Crooked Heart and dificulty putting it down. The characters in the book were enjoyable and when you think you know who the killer is, she twists things around. I would recommend to anyone who enjoys a good 'Who Done It Mystery'.
A clever traditional mystery.......2004-03-05
Tom Holder, Police Chief of a small town in New Jersey, has several problems. First, a woman is missing and feared harmed--possibly dead. Her husband is discovered drunk and depressed refusing to discuss the disappearance with the police. Second, Tom is stuck in a dead marriage and harbors feelings of affection for a local Episcopal priest, Rev. Kathryn Koerney who feels much the same as Tom. Yet, proper behavior requires they keep their feelings secret from each other. Nonetheless, Tom elicits Kathryn's help in trying to discover why the woman is missing and whom, if anyone, is responsible.
CROOKED HEART is a clever traditional mystery with engaging characters and an idyllic locale. The mystery, itself, is very well thought out and, in the end, quite well done. However, the story never truly captured my full interest and, in the end, proves to be quite forgettable. The bottom line: a good read.
nice twist.......2003-10-10
The murder is not the main thing in this book. You know who the killer is very quickly but the tentative romance between the sheriff and the minister drives the book foreward. You have a nice man (but no saint) who is in a very bad marriage and you have an earnest, religious, opinionated and outspoken woman who knows he's married. What will they do? How on earth can there be a happy ending for them? That's what kept me reading. The plot was only so-so but the characters are great.

Fatal love and the ambiguous bond of brotherhood are central to Helen Dunmore's With Your Crooked Heart. Siblings Paul and Johnnie are born more than a decade apart in an East London tenement. Sworn to protect and nurture his brother, Paul elevates them both to a life of wealth and status through a string of dubious land-development deals. As a result, Johnnie has "what Paul never had: he'd had father and brother, all rolled into one, and a future that someone else had already paid for." But with his life mortgaged to his ever-loving brother, the impossibly beautiful Johnnie becomes as compelled by the possibilities of failure as his sibling is by success.
Paul, meanwhile, weds Louise, and his "passion of protectiveness" immediately draws Johnnie into the heart of their marriage. Needless to say, the bride may well wish for less of a ménage à trois:
He sat across the kitchen table from me, smiling, and told me there'd been a complete fuck-up over manufacturing acid in a farmhouse in Herefordshire. He would have made a million. It was always a million with Johnnie: some glittering amount of money that you couldn't really pin down.... We let ourselves think he was like a child. It was the angle we looked at him. When you see a cat play, if you can call it play, you thank God it's the size it is.
But after giving birth to a daughter, Louise attempts to drown her own secrets with drink, beginning a slow progression of loss that will drag down her family in its wake. "I could look back and show you each step of the way that's got us here," she recalls, mapping her melancholy journey. Yet when Louise is presented with one last chance to save Johnnie from himself, some sort of redemption seems in the offing.
Dunmore's success here, as in such earlier novels as Talking to the Dead and Your Blue-Eyed Boy, is her ability to combine sublime prose with a swift and sure-footed narrative. Yet With Your Crooked Heart also goes beyond this alchemy of poetry and plot: it delivers an understated, emphatic study of alcoholism, adult self-delusion, and the emotional relativity of all relationships in a world where "not being able to trust yourself is the biggest thrill of all." --Rachel Holmes
Book Description
In "sharp, elegant prose" (Publishers Weekly, starred review), With Your Crooked Heart introduces Louise, a tough and introspective Londoner trapped in a subtle battle between two brothers. Paul and Johnnie were born twelve years apart, in a one-bedroom flat in a dingy London suburb. Their ascent to money and power looks easy from a distance, but the seductive brothers burn those who get too close. When Paul marries Louise, Johnnie is part of the contract, and their daughter, Anna, is tangled in it from birth. Paul deals in the development of contaminated land; self-destructive Johnnie deals in crime. When Johnnie has to flee the country, Louise goes with him. Their trip sets in motion inevitabilities that have smoldered beneath the surface from the beginning, a dire and redemptive chain of events that devastates every branch of this crooked family tree. With Your Crooked Heart's sensuous, daring prose brilliantly exhibits Dunmore's "poet's ear for language and photographer's eye for images" (Newsday) and confirms The Guardian's claim that Dunmore is "an electrifying and original talent."

With Your Crooked Heart.......2001-04-24
WITH YOUR CROOKED HEART is a journey into the feeling and lives of three exrtremely different people whose insides are torn and compelling. The book should be read and then the reader can go backwards and read TALKING TO THE DEAD. These two books are written by the most intelligent, decisive, and informative female author that exists today. It will be difficult to put either of these books down, so make certain you allow enough time to "get away" and delve into a strange and heartwrenching world.
Totally compelling.......2000-06-24
Once I got past the rather slow opeing chapters, I could not put this book down. It is beautifully written and interestingly constructed. Chapters are written alternately from the perspective of each main character and yet flow together nicely, providing an intimate portrait of the inner feelings of each character. The book is as painful as it is compelling. Each adult character is very human and flawed in some tragic way and events play out accordingly. Everyone wishes that everyone else were different, and then everything would be all right. Wishing doesn't make it so, however, and the plot continues relentlessly to its tragic conclusion. Dunsmore is a wizard with language. She has an incredible talent for making you feel that you've lived inside the heads of her characters. She can paint pcitures with words so vivid, they are almost cinematic. I definitely recommend this book!

A family about to go down in flames.......2005-02-26
This novel is about the disintegration of a family, a fairly disfunctional one at that. The father is a weak man and the oldest son hates him for that; the mother sees only the good in everything; the other three children try to hold things together. When I first read this when it first came out, I was very moved by it. Reading it a second time now I find much of the action just wasted energy. The book is poignant and sad in spots, but just too crazy and chaotic for me now.
A shame it's out of print!.......2000-01-28
I really just can't believe it's out of print--it makes no sense to me.This book is a true treasure. It stays with me, and I've read it several times and given it to all my friends. It is an interesting, touching, and funny story of a family, akin to the work of John Irving. I encourage you to order an out of print search and read it for yourself.
