basic concepts presented as something fresh and radical.......2007-10-07
I've just gotten into WOM marketing and so I assumed that my knowledge on the subject is limited. After reading this book, however, I came to think that I could be a marketing guru as well. The ideas described in this book could be summarized on three pages and still those pages would not be worth reading! Rules such as: make your message interesting or make it short or make it easy to remember are obvious for all those who are capable to think logically. Others (e.g. Chinese banquet example) are simply ridiculous!
I expected to learn a lot from this book. I learned nothing new. Plus, the book appear to contradict all the rules he lists: it could definitely be shorter and more interesting!
Exciting message, accessible style.......2007-10-04
I loved this book not only for the specific word of mouth marketing tips, but for the enthusiasm Sernovitz brings to the subject matter as well.
I am nobody you've ever heard of - just a woman starting her own business. Sernovitz made me realize that there is a whole new way of doing things, a whole world out there that I have had no connection to.
First, this book made me feel not so bad about my lack of experience, because plenty of people with experience are just not getting it! And second, Andy's book taught me that if my business was going to have an internet presence I'd darn well better get up to speed on how to become a part of the online community and be as smart as I can about making sure people know about my product, find my website, and buy! I'd better blog - I'd better get out there - I'd better make connections, and friendships, and be a part of the conversation!
"Word of Mouth Marketing" has an exciting message and is very accessible even for the novice. This book should be a part of anyone's Business 101 learning, and I highly recommend it.
Left feeling teased, and a little cheated........2007-10-03
I was really torn between giving this book three or four stars. What inclined me toward four was that I didn't get a straight run through it, but instead was three quarters of the way through and had to put it aside for a week-which is a long time to put reading aside and then pick up again without it losing a great deal of its momentum. So, I went with the higher scoring in the belief that I would have had a more positive experience with the material if it had not been for a circumstance beyond the author's control.
That being said, you may still be wondering what I found lacking to keep it from getting five stars. First of all, I don't hand five stars out like candy (and I wish a lot of other reviewers would follow that lead, as it seems as though there are an over-abundance of five stars over at Amazon). I feel that a five star rating is for the exceptional. A four star is for the good. Three stars for the nominal, with two and one stars relegated to the bad and really stinky. I steer away from half stars as that smacks of indecision (and would require me having to add those images to my library and they are difficult to come by).
I rate this book at four stars because it is good. It is not exceptional. If you're purchasing as marketing advice, it will provide you with enough to know that you need to buy more books by other authors that go into a good deal more detail. If you've already purchased a couple of marketing books, it will reinforce what you've already read and give you a good pep talk to keep you motivated. It is not going to enlighten you to anything new (unless it's your first purchase of marketing material-in which case see point above about now knowing you need to buy more books).
As a writer, publisher and editor myself, I have to make one comment about the writing-more precisely the voice, or tone, of the book. I received the distinct impression that Mr. Sernovitz saw a trend of sales in marketing books, whipped one together with no real effort or research beyond what he already knew off the top of his head (which is considerable-no argument from me there) and tossed it out onto the market. Again, as in one of my prior reviews of a different book, I wish the author had taken more time, gone more indepth, researched and added to what he already knew and given us a real read. In many ways I felt teased, and a little cheated.
Empower your customers.......2007-09-19
I typically gauge an effective marketing book by how much actionable information is provided. My measure is simple, lots of earmarked pages indicates good ideas that can be impactful. After reading this book on the train I had 12 ear marked pages and had left myself three voicemails about ideas my company could implement immediately.
If you want to make a measurable improvement in your marketing programs and empower your customers, buy this book.

Great book, but just a primer.......2007-09-03
An easy-to-read primer to Word of Mouth Marketing. If you're new to WoM, start here. However if you're looking for more details, you may be disappointed. Wish he would have included more case studies. Very up to date with a strong focus on the online world, something that's missing from Emanuel Rosen's "The Anatomy of Buzz".

Horrible!.......2007-07-02
I hated this book. It took all I had to finish it. When I started out I thought, well maybe it's one of those that just takes a bit to get into....by the time I was half way thru I realized it was not going to get any better. The plot was so thin & it was in no way funny. I never actually got a feel of the characters - like they were real or had real feelings - I could not relate to them. Now the only reason I gave it 2 stars was because the sex scenes were good & plentiful - infact that was the only thing that made the book interesting. And now that I think about it, it was like a porn: no storyline, plot sucks, fake characters, but lots of sex. I do not recommend this book....unless you wanna waste your time. Man, I wasted my money.....I wonder if I can get it back.....
Pretty Good Contemporary Romance.......2006-08-30
I like McCarthy's books, so maybe I'm a little biased. She writes well and the loves scenes are fabulous. This is not earth-shattering stuff and no brain required. The plots are usually a bit thin, but the characters are likeable and the story flows well. If your looking for a deep and emotional read, try McNaught instead. You won't cry or be cursing the characters in a McCarthy book, just some good romantic fluff.
Its basically about an FBI agent, Derek Knight, who loses crucial evidence in a federal drug price fixing case to low time reporter Reese Hampton. Reese knows a good story when she sees one and won't let studly Derek out of her sight until she gets the full exclusive that'll lead to a career break. Derek can't mess up on this mission, his career is at stake too. The too butt heads and warm the sheets as they search for more evidence.
A great romance between two A-type personalities. If you liked any of McCarthy's anthologies or her other books, you'll like this one too. Mouth to Mouth is good too.
Note: Derek's sister, Clair is featured in The Night Before Christmas anthology -recommended and Derek's FBI partners Maddock and CJ have their own story in Bad Boys in Black Tie anotholgy -Highy Recommmended.
SSSOOO BAD!!!.......2006-08-15
This book is terrible!! I threw it away and I never do that but this book only deserves the trash bin. I liked Ms. McCarthy's other books but this one had no plot at all and did not make me care about any of the characters.
3+ Pretty Good !!.......2006-07-18
This was another worthwhile read from this author. The story was a little more in depth than her other books. As usual, interesting characters, lots of laughs and a whole lot of sex.
The author has quite an imagination!
First Time Reader.......2006-07-05
This is the first book I have read by this author. While amusing at times, the plot is very thin. Read something by Rachel Gibson instead.

Book Description
This IDC study presents IDC's market sizing, forecast, and analysis of the Australian smart handheld device (SHD) market, which comprises traditional PDAs and converged devices. The former, which remains largely consumer-focused products, is a growing but maturing market, while the latter, also known as the smart phone market, is at the cusp of the wireless data boom as mobile devices capable of both voice and data gain traction among business users.
"The Australian SHD market will continue to experience very healthy growth throughout the forecast period, with advancements in display, memory, expansion, imaging, processors, and wireless technologies acting as major drivers," says Warren Chaisatien, IDC Australia's Senior Analyst for Mobile and Wireless Solutions. He adds that investments in brands and solutions, partnerships within the wireless solution ecosystem, and mobile data pricing affordability and predictability are some of the factors crucial to the growth of the SHD and mobile data markets in Australia.

Book Description
It is late summer in the year 1270 and England is as weary as its aging king, Henry III. Although the Simon de Montfort rebellion is over, the smell of death still hangs like smoke over the land. Even in the small priory of Tyndal on the remote East Anglian coast, the monks and nuns of the Order of Fontevraud long for a return to tranquil routine. Their hopes are dashed, however, when the young and inexperienced Eleanor of Wynethorpe is appointed their new prioress over someone of their own choosing. Nor are Eleanor's own prayers for a peaceful transition answered. Only a day after her arrival, a brutally murdered monk is found in the cloister gardens, and Brother Thomas, a young priest with a troubled past, arrives to bring her a more personal grief. Now she must not only struggle to gain the respect of her terrified and resentful flock but also cope with violence, lust and greed in a place dedicated to love and peace.

Not a vintage mystery, for cert.......2007-04-02
Although Royal's debut novel does not quite deliver, it holds considerable promise for the future.
The circumstances of the murder are intriguing, but the solution is mundane. The ending is flat, but I won't say exactly why, because you don't want spoilers in a review.
The heroine, the young Prioress Eleanor, is interesting and likeable. The way the sleuthing skills are divided between three of the characters is odd, and not altogether satisfactory.
The author uses Modern English, as one would expect, except for the curious use of the word 'cert'. So, when asked if anyone suspected a monk of murder, a character says, "Some did, for cert". It happens a few times, and is quite jarring. Also, the dialogue is often inappropriate for the speaker. A serving girl, talking of a prioress and a brother, says, "Neither seemed comfortable in dealings with the secular world", and so on, totally out of character. More editorial effort is required, and then perhaps Eleanor and company will deliver more satisfying adventures.
A Superb Book!.......2007-01-09
I've been reading a number of fine medieval mysteries but this one happens to be one the finest. Ms. Royal's debut, The Wine of Violence is an excellent first. It is winter of the year 1270 in a remote part of East Anglican coast. A new young prioress takes over an abbey frought with superstition, intrigue and murder. A monk's body is found to be mutilated in the garden. Politics, lust and the true goodness of the human spirit are abound in The Wine of Violence. It will bring a tear to the eye. A story that will stay with you. A must read.
Predictable.......2006-07-29
With the other high reviews, I was expecting an exciting read. However, Wine of Violence was very predictable with few interesting twists in its slow plot. As for protraying a vivid picture of the medieval period, Wine of Violence again failed.
Interesting new writer.......2004-05-06
This is a book from a new writer who has got closer than most to the true atmosphere of life in a medieval religious community. If you enjoy mysteries set in medieval days, give this one a try. The characters are solid and believable. The settings and dialogue are well-researched and accurate.
It's difficult, when you write a book about a time several hundred years ago, to portray accurately the feeling of a very different time while realizing that human nature is basically much the same now as it was then. There were greedy people, lazy people, untrustworthy people. We know the type, we see them and their effects every day. What we don't see is a huge section of the population desperately clinging to religion to save them from the fires of hell. The writer straddles this dichotomy very well.
Her characters are so well realized that I'm hoping to meet many of them again in future books

Can pacifism be taken too far?.......2002-03-05
Morrow has a gift for an unforgettable image. In Towing Jehovah, we have God's 2 mile long rotting corpse being towed by a supertanker, and here we have a river of liquefied hate. If you think the book is totally unrealistic (even by sfnal standards), you're right. But that's not the point-- read the cover: it's "A Science Fiction Fable." In between the satire runs the very serious question of how far we should bow before the altar of expedience. This book is deeper than it seems.
Eh........2001-09-30
This is certainly a pretty good book. However, it also certainly has some problems. Personally, I feel that the book is basically completely pointless. The plot is interesting, to a point (...) The last part of the book is basically completely linear and boring, (...)
Anyways, now that I am done dissecting the plot, it is time for the theme. I find that the theme of the book is more like 'agression vs. pacifism'. However, if the book was supposed to be an arguement for pacifism, it did not work very well. If it was supposed to be an arguement for agression, it did even worse. It did not seem like it was an argument for anything, however.
The characters were kind of piddly-ish. Burne especially was flat and kind of lame (although he was the coolest character). He was also the least believable. I mean, come on, he is archaelogist! Who does he think he is, Indiana Jones? :D
To sum it all up, this is book without any sort of external motives for being written or read. It is purely a story, although it (is bad) (somewhat). In short, do not expect anything amazing. I wouldn't pay more than 5 bucks for this - and I doubt you could get it for that much. Just borrow it.
One of the most abysmal books I've ever read.......1999-04-13
The plot is ludicrous. The characters are completely flat. The science and nature described in the book are so incredibly bad as to be absurd. The only thing that kept this book from being a complete waste of paper is that it serves as an object lesson for how not to write.
Terrific debut novel.......1999-01-08
Subtitled "A Science Fiction Fable," The Wine of Violence was a wonderful beginning to Morrow's career. The central plot element is a fabulous (as in "fable") river into which planetary inhabitants routinely "decant" their violent impulses. The book begins when an outsider makes a forced landing on the planet, and discovers the society that results when violence is all but eliminated. It takes off when the protagonist's new lover partakes of the wine of violence. For me, the book was a tour de force of characterization, as the main characters remained real throughout their transformations. Ever since I read it, I have eagerly looked forward to Morrow's work.
Not bad, but not as good as his others........1999-01-04
The Wine of Violence wasn't a bad book. It's better than most out there. But James Morrow is one of the best authors writing today, and this isn't his best work. In my opinion, "This is the Way the World Ends" is. The theme of the book is peace vs. freedom, and the setting is utopian Quetzalia, a hidden planet of pacifists. But the ideas aren't just floating out there; as in most of James Morrow's books, the characters are strong. I recommend this book for James Morrow fans only, the rest can skip it.

Life experiences.......2004-09-01
"What you Make it" is a wonderful novel that explains life experiences that women go through everyday. While reading this novel, I was not able to put it down. The novel not only made me laugh and cry, but it touched a personal place in my heart. I would recommend every woman get their own copy.
It is what It is.......2004-08-31
"What You Make It" is an excellent title for this book. Candi Wine made it clear that life is an experience and it's up to the individual to make it better or worst. It's stimulating and factual anecdote keeps you wanting more. It provides real-life situations that allow the reader to understand and virtually feel what the characters are experiencing. In addition to all of the seriousness, on numerous occasions it made me laugh. Candi Wine, you did your thing. "Lady's you best listen up"
GRRRREAT BOOK!!!!!!!!!.......2004-08-30
This is one on those books that grabs your attention right from the start. I just couldn't put it down so I finished it in two days. In my book Candi Wine is right up there with Carl Webber and Eric Jerome Dickey. I can't wait for the next book.
