Book Description
An extremely rich Belgian collection of Art Nouveau articles is behind the adventure leading to the conceiving of this book. Michel Draguet, in eight reference-filled chapters, guides the reader through the period between the end of the last century and the beginning of the present one, the herald of deep changes inspiring an art which, stemming from the symbolist and decadent instances, unfolds like a page of literature.
The articles of applied arts figuring in the book have the flavor of the poetry of Baudelaire and Mallarmé, recall the microcosm of Proustian interiors and take us back to an atmosphere steeped in the contributions of several arts, from dance to painting and sculpture, wherein the search for new techniques clearly does not play merely a minor role. Between literature and industry, a portent of the new century striding in, Treasures of Art Nouveau gives us back the savor of a world fully aware of the winds of change.

Incredible source book.......2004-09-03
If you can't find a design you can use for inspiration, you're just not looking hard enough. Not for beginners since the designs are incredibly intricate, but your creativity will wake up and take notice.
Super source book.......2004-06-05
Originally, this was a pair of portfolios of designs in the Art Nouveau period. Art Nouveau was not just twisty flowers, though some people like to stereotype it into those narrow parameters. This is not a how-to book with cutting patterns. It has only the paintings with suggested scale. On a few pages, motifs overlap each other, so you can't just scan and go: you have to build up your idea of the covered areas. One pictorial arched piece is missing the right third, again a challenge to finish it yourself.
The designs range from splendidly romantic conceptions of floral forms to windows a-scamper with squirrels or lizards to some that are distinctly eerie. Bats fly across the moon amidst dead trees. A woman combs her hair before a volcano flowing lava. An octopus and a sea-weed maiden struggle underwater--in combat? in love? Several have fishes and there are even cat designs.
You don't have to see these only as windows. I've converted two to rug designs by taking out the excess black lines of supports or piecing necessary to glass work. You may want to take only one area out of an entire design to render in wood, or do a mosaic version of the whole thing. This is a starting point for the competent craftsman who loves the Art Nouveau energy, not an end product.
Not really Art Nouveau.......2003-02-18
Though some of the designs are nice, most are way too busy for my taste, and I wouldn't really call them Art Nouveau. Quite a few of them look more like Renaissance style stained glass, and some of them look modern (like the sailboat patterns?). It is in color, though, which is nice. Very complicated - definately not for beginning stained glass crafters.
Art Noveau Stained glass-Lyongruen.......1999-12-29
Nice plates with dimensions. Good for projects and for idea's. I highly reccomend it.
Book Description
A femme fatale to equal Greta Garbo and Mae West, and a fashion icon in her own lifetime, this exhibition catalog is dedicated to the artist as well as the concept of the modern woman she represented. Born in 1898 in Warsaw, Lempicka fled during the Bolshevik Revolution, arriving in Paris in 1918 where she began painting under André Lhote. Influenced by a trip to Italy, she combined neo-cubism and Renaissance influences, reducing the harmony of her colors to the essential and tightly framing her portraits in order to give the figures energy and stature. In 1933 she married her best client, Baron Raoul Kuffner de Dioszegh, and in 1939 they left for America where Tamara conquered New York and Los Angeles exhibiting in important galleries.Divided into three sections, the book focuses on her distinctive artistic style, and on her fascination with the female form, which she glorified in paintings such as her famous Beautiful Rafaela, Portrait of a Young Girl in a Green Dress, and Portrait of Suzi Solidor. In the third section, author Emmanuel Bréon and the artist's granddaughter unveil the legend of Lempicka, illustrated with rare and sultry archival photographs of the artist. The appendixes include a detailed illustrated chronology and a catalog of works. The book's modern design reflects the Art Deco style and makes Tamara de Lempicka an attractive addition to the library of Lempicka and Art Deco fans.

A Beautiful Book About A Stunning Woman and Her Painting.......2007-05-22
Tamara de Lempicka was born Marie Gorska in Poland in 1898. She married young and moved to St. Petersburg. Her husband was arrested by the Bolsheviks and she won his freedom with her charm. They fled to Paris where she studied very hard to become an artist. She was renowned as a portrait painter of the rich and famous. Bisexual, she slept with many of her subjects.
It would be difficult to get past the sensational events in the life of Tamara de Lempicka to her work except that the work is every bit as sensational. These Art Deco paintings have the immediate appeal of posters--realistic but mannered images with intense colors, smooth surfaces, and voluptuous figures. The word critics have most often applied to her as an artist is "strange."
Her technique seems to have sprung into full flower without any period of development, became instantly fixed in all its peculiarities and never changed. (She did try to alter her technique in later years with disappointing results and quit exhibiting.) Only a few early paintings lack the svelte characteristics that make her work instantly recognizable. Surprisingly this technique served her well enough even when she chose subjects other than portraits of the rich and famous for which she was noted and in demand in her heyday.
Lempicka stands apart from other modern artists, a forceful personality of sizable proportions, and the icon of Art Deco. She outlived her fame and glory and her later years were not happy or productive. She died in Mexico in 1980 at the age of 82 and at her request her ashes were scattered on Mount Popacatepetl, a fitting and dramatic end to an unusual life.
This lovely book, published on the occasion of an exhibit of her work, is divided in three sections:The Artist, The Woman, and The Legend. In addition to the excellent reproductions of her paintings and nine essays by seven critics and her granddaughter, there are stunning photographs of Lempicka herself and some of her apartment in Paris.

Book Description
Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann, one of Europe's most influential Art Deco designers, is being celebrated in North America with a major traveling exhibition.
Ruhlmann began designing at a young age and exhibited his first pieces in Paris in 1910. By 1919, he had founded his own interior design company, producing everything for the ideal home, from armoires and rugs to wallpaper and light fixtures. His early work is particularly notable for its Art Nouveau influences, and his signature pieces epitomize the best of Art Deco design.
Ruhlmann, inspired by the rigorous craftsmanship of the great eighteenth-century furniture makers, had a true passion for work well done. In fact, he was so protective of his reputation that he left orders in his will for his company to be liquidated after his death, to ensure that the quality workmanship associated with the Ruhlmann name would never decline. It has not.
This exquisite twovolume boxed set with ribbon closures is produced in the Ruhlmann spirit, and the lavish illustrations include exquisite facsimile reproductions of his designs. Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann will be a treasured addition to the library of anyone interested in this golden age of European design.

Book Description
Tamara de Lempicka's distinctive painting style was as glamorous as her subject matter-the writers, aristocrats, artists, and entertainers of Paris in the age of Art Deco. Born in Poland, De Lempicka (1898-1980) created highly mannered portraits using a trademark combination of soft, rounded forms set against architectural lines and shapes, reflecting the new sophisticated urbanity of her sitters. Capturing the nascent modernist spirit, her bold technique and palette rapidly won her acclaim as the quintessential Art Deco artist.
This book, published to accompany an exhibition at London's Royal Academy of Arts, concentrates on this extraordinary artist's most productive and recognized period, between 1922 and 1935, during which time her brand of Synthetic Cubism brilliantly captured the atmosphere of wealth and decadence for which Paris had become famous. Some 60 major works, superbly reproduced in lush color, confirm De Lempicka's reputation as one of the most iconic painters of her generation, and establish her place within the modern movement.

Excellent Career Retrospective.......2004-10-11
"Tamara de Lempicka: Art Deco Icon" is the companion book for the 2004-05 exhibitions of her work at the Royal Academy in London and the Kunstforum Wien in Vienna.
You'll usually find de Lempicka's work scattered about in various Art Deco collection books or exhibits, but a career retrospective on her impressive work and long, colorful, peripatetic life is truly a rare thing.
De Lempicka's slick style of portraiture embodied the glamor, style, modernity and sexuality of the Art Deco period that was fashionable during the inter-war years. Like Art Deco itself, her work fell out of favor during the 1940s and 50s, only to be resurrected in subsequent decades as the public's interest in the art of the inter-war period reemerged.
Compiling such an anthology is clearly a labor of love for the authors. Alain Blondel, Ingried Brugger and Tag Gronberg do an excellent job presenting and analyzing de Lempicka's portfolio, as well as illustrating her stature in the world of 20th Century art. De Lempicka's influences (Picasso, Lhote), her art, her loves, her vanity and her travels from czarist Warsaw to bohemian Paris to glamorous Hollywood are all discussed in these pages as well.
This book is a must-buy for de Lempicka enthusiasts and I also recommend it to anyone interested in Art Deco in general. It also makes a terrific gift for anyone interested in painting, particularly portrait painting.
Maybe I'm crazy.......2003-05-31
I adore Tamara's work and have for years. I've read about her, but it was frustrating because the books all seemed to show the same handful of paintings over and over. I thought I was crazy spending this much money on a book (never spent this much before and will probably never spend this much again). But I've owned it now for a couple of years and I never regretted buying it! This book shows me the complete works of Tamara. I've looked at the pictures over and over. If you really like Tamara's work - ie: she is your all time favorite artist - then buy this book. Buy it at full price or buy it second hand (make sure all the pages are there). You'll see how she painted when she started out and how her work evolved until her death. I have been able to experience that process as a viewer with this book and that was what was important to me.
