Millions of dollars are at stake in a huge tobacco-company case in Biloxi, and the jury's packed with people who have dirty little secrets. A mysterious young man takes subtle control of the jury as the defense watches helplessly, but they soon realize that he in turn is controlled by an even more mysterious young woman. Lives careen off course as they bend everyone in the case to their will.

Reads like a bad movie.......2007-09-21
There is a saying that goes, "simple minds simply amused,"--this I believe describes anyone who would continue reading John Grisham books. Simplistic cardboard characters with contrived dialogue does not an author make.
Best ever.......2007-09-18
Runaway Jury is without a doubt my favorite Grisham novel. It's unfortunate that the moviemakers didn't see fit to follow the story faithfully. I wonder: Were they afraid of the tobacco industry?
Loved it.......2007-08-09
Well written, easy to follow all the characters, and I was kept in suspense throughout.
Buying a Trial.......2007-06-06
The big tobacco companies have a serious problem. Recently people have started bringing lawsuits against them, lawsuits for selling a product that is deadly and addictive. The tobacco companies expect that at some point they will start losing lawsuits. So far, though, with the help of Rankin Fitch, a jury expert, they have managed to win all of their suits.
Now there is once again a lawsuit against one of the tobacco companies. Fitch is again called in with his team of experts before the jury is chosen. They take pictures, follow the potential jury members and talk to anyone connected with the backgrounds of these people, trying to find the perfect jury that will set the tobacco companies free again. Fitch is confident in his work, although he is nervous about the man who ends up being juror number two--Nicholas Easter, a man in his mid twenties who claims to be a student. Easter is less threatening than many other potential jurors so he is allowed to stay on the jury, but Fitch is desperate to find out the details of his life.
Soon after the trial starts, Fitch finds out one thing about Easter's life--that he is working with a woman named Marlee who is not on the jury. Marlee contacts Fitch to feed him tiny details of what Easter is going to wear in the courtroom and what he or the other jurors are going to do. These details make clear that Marlee and Nicholas have a partnership, and that this partnership may make it possible for Fitch to win yet another trial for the tobacco companies.
Grisham went into very specific detail, making it seem plausible that a trial like this really could be so corrupt. It made me doubt the fairness of our legal system and question whether trials really can be bought, as this book indicates.
I found the ending of this book very satisfying; I liked reading how things ended up working out.
4.5 stars.......2007-01-16
Another winner by Grisham! I don't want to sound like a broken record so I'll just say that this man can truly TELL A STORY!!!

Book Description
He Was a young American soldier -- and the most powerful man in a remote rural District of Vietnam.
In the spring of 1969, First Lieutenant David Donovan arrived in the Mekong Delta of South Vietnam to work as military advisor with village chiefs and local militia to win the war.
But as he was the highest-ranking person in the entire district, his life there was far more complex than anyone could have imagined.
This is Donovan's gripping account of combat missions and night ambushes in the swamps and jungles of the Delta...his heartrending tale of personal involvement with the culture and families in his charge...his humane introspection on his awesome responsibility as both warrior and king...his stark reflections on the changes he saw in himself and his country upon his return to the U.S.
Customer Reviews:
A Royal Read.......2003-12-12
I think I probably read the first printing of Once a Warrior King and that was probably over a decade ago now, but David Donovans account of his time in Vietnam still remains one of my favourite accounts of the conflict.
High School.......2003-12-02
I read this four years ago as a junior in high school for my American History Class. The course was offered for college credit and I used to get frustrated by all the books my teacher made us read, not to mention the essays we had to write in response to what we learned. Near the end of the year she assigned "Once a Warrior King" and I was so impressed that I never forgot the impact the book had on me. It was a vivid statement from the point of view of a man fighting in Vietnam and I could feel everything with accuracy as if I had gone through the same trauma. He was a warrior king and it was a classic.
Tells it like it was.......2002-02-24
This book brought back painful memories for me. As a young sailor on a River Assault Boat in River Assault Division 92, I participated on "Operation Barrier Reef" in January 1969, from the MACV compound described in this book. Although this book does not cover boat operations and the part that Mobile Riverine or River Patrol Units played during this period of time, it is an excellent description of the warfare of the period and operations in a remote area of Vietnam without fire support or air support. Those of you that want a graphic description of
river operations in that area, read the prologue from Brown River, Black Berets, a description of a firefight on the Dong
Tiem Canal, that I participated in January 1969. Both books
are excellent background sources for river warfare and the
seldom covered special unit operations.
Uncomfortably Realistic.......1999-12-17
I was stationed in Duc Pho, Southern I Corp, and spent over 8 months living in a remote village with my platoon during 1969 and 1970. I saw so very much and understood so little. This book brought back the conflicts that haunted me for years and helped me come to grips with the most significant year of my life. Fear, anxiety, exhaustion, isolation, and confusion blended into an environment that this book describes like none that I have read.
Outstanding and intelligent first hand account!.......1999-11-28
This is absolutely the best first hand account of the Vietnam War. Very well written, detailed and introspective.

Book Description
Once Were Warriors is Alan Duff's harrowing vision of his country's indigenous people two hundred years after the English conquest. In prose that is both raw and compelling, it tells the story of Beth Heke, a Maori woman struggling to keep her family from falling apart, despite the squalor and violence of the housing projects in which they live. Conveying both the rich textures of Maori tradition and the wounds left by its absence, Once Were Warriors is a masterpiece of unblinking realism, irresistible energy, and great sorrow.
Customer Reviews:
This movie took me to New Zealand.......2006-04-07
While I agree this was one of the rare cases where the film was actually better than the book, had it not been for the book and subsequent movie my daughter and I would not have started what would be the beginning of a deep interest in Maori culture and a trip there where we stayed on Maori land.
The stories I was told during my trip were very special and some mirror the trials of the indigenous people of this country, also known as Native Americans. It opened me up to a place on this planet I may not have ever considered visiting. Now I can not wait to get back!
Bland and moralizing .......2005-08-12
I picked up Once Were Warriors because, like most other people, I had seen the movie and was expecting a riveting tale. This is, however, one of those rare cases where the movie surpasses the book in almost all facets.
The story is set against the backdrop of a government housing project in New Zealand and describes the trials and tribulations of a Maori family living on the dole (unemployment). The main characters are the parents, Ruth and Jake Heke, and some of their children, Nig, Booggie and Grace.
The movie (unlike the book) is fraught with emotion and sorrow, and you are swept into the netherworld of Maori society almost against your will. Perhaps if I hadn't seen the movie, I wouldn't have been expecting as much from the book and would have been less disappointed and more forgiving towards the author.
Unfortunately the bland and ineptly described milieu, the one-dimensional characters and lack of dialogue punctuation in the book gives a feeling of emptiness and you are left wanting more.
The story itself is not badly constructed and I could be charitable and say that Alan Duff employed the aforesaid writing devices to emphasize the soullessness of the society he describes. Regrettably he disproves this theorem by descending into a mire of soppiness at the end of the book.
He allows the characters to become pathetically clichéd and tries to turn a fictional account into a self-serving sermon on the moralities of his society. Both the book and the believability of the characters are devalued and made to suffer for this cheap trick of his.
On the positive side, the book initially makes a powerful statement about the effects of developed societies intruding into more primitive ones. The feelings of displacement and defeatism of a conquered nation are also explored as well as the impact they have on the psyche of the subjugated culture.
In conclusion, I would not recommend this book to anyone not extremely devoted to the Maori culture and the societal difficulties of New Zealand. There are many better books available in terms of the emotional, societal and familial structure issues this book attempts to explore.
If, however, you like your moralizing fed with a big spoon and rammed down you throat, this is the book for you.
"Complete Waste of TIme".......2003-07-10
I had watched the movie so I thought the book would be just as good or better: NOT! The lack of dialouge is disconcerting, and you never really get a grasp on the characters. Written correctly this would have been an excellent book, however when a book becomes a chore to finish, it is hardly an enjoyable experience. The movie is fantastic. Save your money {and your eyes} and rent the video!

Heavy handed.......2002-09-05
An earlier reviewer who said skip this and see the film was on the mark.
There's no doubting that this is an incredible powerful and important story (hence the 3 stars).
However, to describe the writing as heavy handed is an understatement. Unlike Lee Tamahori (film's director)Duff seems incapable of letting his characters and the situations they find themselves speak for themselves. When you've created characters as powerful and memorable as Jake and Beth it's so unecessary. The fact that Duff feels the need to intersperse the narative with his simplistic moralising means by the end you find yourself spend more time wishing he'd shut up than worrying about the fate of the family.
The film however is a masterpiece. Astonishingly powerful performances, and the direction pulls no punches whilst allowing the audience to draw their own conclusions. Duff could have learnt much, however from he's done since it doesn't seem that he did.

Malcolm MacFane was once known as the famous Black Wolf, leader of his clan. Now physically and emotionally scarred by battle, he is no longer the mighty warrior. Ariella MacKendrick, who needs the powerful Black Wolf to help protect her clan, is devastated to find only the shell of the once powerful warrior. Yet neither is what the other first sees. Ariella hides her true identity behind a young lad's clothes, and Malcolm only needs to look beneath the surface of his broken body to find the warrior within himself. A tender tale of courage sparked with romance.
Book Description
Her stories are tender and sensual, humorous and deeply involving. Now Karyn Monk offers her most enthralling romance ever: a tale of a shattered hero fighting for redemption--and fighting for love...
Ariella MacKendrick knew her people had only one hope for survival: she must find the mighty warrior known as the Black Wolf and bring him home to defend
her clan. But when Ariella finally tracks him down, Malcolm MacFane is nothing like the hero she dreamed he would be.
The fearless laird who once led a thousand men is a drunken shell of his former self, scarred inside and out, with no army in sight. Yet Ariella has no choice but to put her trust in MacFane. And soon something begins to stir in the fallen legend. A fire still rages in his warrior heart--a passion that could lead them into battle...a desire, barely leashed, that could brand a Highland beauty's soul.
Customer Reviews:
A nice change in typical romance..........2007-06-11
I had read other work by Karyn Monk, and considered her to be a good storyteller who always adds some new twist to historical romance. Then I read Once a Warrior and realized she's not a good writer; she's a great writer. Monk really shines in this story of a non-traditional hero.
Too often, the heroes in romance have few flaws. Perhaps they're stubborn or focused on making a marriage for an heir or for money. But to have a hero so lost and seemingly beyond redemption was a pleasant surprise. The story is swift, keeping the reader involved and anticipating what happens next. A definite "stay up all night to read" book.
This one goes on my "keeper" shelf.
Forgotten Hero.......2006-10-24
There was something sublime and lingering how the Black Wolf got under my skin the further into the book I got. He reminded me of a physically broken Maximus in "Gladiator". His honor and heart broke through the trappings of his assumptions of his failures and the horrors created by being mislead one dark painful night. He was stripped of everything, drank himself into oblivion to deal with his pain, both physical and emotional, yet his depth of character crumbled the layers of defenses he had built around himself. I liked him very much.
As for Ariella, I felt her character lacked in depth and emotion, and felt although courageous, determined, and duty bound, she was cold and unforgiving and created much pain in a man who had enough pain to deal with in his life.
The book is a little off here and there, especially with the ending which I would have liked to have seen more developed, but overall, I liked it and would recommend it.
For a really good 5 star read, check out Sara Bennett's "Lily and the Sword", Sophia Johnson's "Risk Everything" and "Always Mine", and Susan Carroll's "Dark Queen Trilogy",.
Tink.......2006-08-10
This was the first book I read of this author and I was a little worried when I picked this book up due to the other reviews. However, I really enjoyed this book. As you read the book your heart goes out to the hero, Malcolm and Ariella. If you are looking for an enjoyable read, this is for you.
Great historical detail, humor, action and plot, but the romance was very weak.......2006-03-04
This was the first book that I've read by this author, and my feelings towards it were lukewarm. I wanted a love story, and this was more of a historical fiction about a Scottish clan with a love story tacked on to it.
First off, the good points. The historical detail was vast and well drawn. I felt like I was really there experiencing what the author was describing. Her prose gave a vivid picture of Scottish clan life during the medieval times, yet it never felt overly wordy, or as if it detracted from the story. This is difficult to do, and I applaud Karyn Monk for being able to do this well.
Also, I often find that books set in the medieval period seem to be very dark and almost devoid of humor. That was not the case in this book. This story had some very funny moments (like when Malcolm is trying to train reluctant poets and artists to become warriors) that had me laughing out loud.
The action and plot was also very well done, and story had a good flow, and the pace was comfortable; interesting, yet not too fast or too slow.
I also liked the idea of a physically imperfect hero. So many romances out there are about people so beautiful that they should be angels. Well, wonderful for them, but don't normal-looking people ever find love? I liked the idea of a tortured hero who will never fully recover, and yet the heroine loves him anyway. I'm so sick of novels about someone who's deaf, or bilnd, or crippled, etc, who just magically recovers. Again, can't someone who has a disability find love too? I really liked that this book tackled this subject, and the author did it well and with delicacy.
My complaints? The romance part of this book was very weak. In 370 pages, it seemed that less than 50 were devoted to the relationship between the hero and the heroine. While I liked the fact that they didn't immediately fall in love (or lust), I felt that the romance aspect of this book was sacrificed for the sake of the plot. The love story was okay, but it didn't make me sigh with happiness or leave me with a warm glow, which is what I want with a romance. When they were seperated, I was not moved very much. A good romance novel usually moves me to tears when the lovers are parted. That didn't happen here.
Also, this book had a secondary romance that had about 5 pages (or less) devoted to it. I kind of felt that the author shouldn't have put the second love story in the book, if she wasn't going to spend any time developing it.
Still, this was an enjoyable read, and I never had to force myself to finish it. If I came across other books by this author, I might try them. Still, if you're looking for really good historical romance that has more focus on the romance, I suggest the works of Jacquie D'Alessandro, LaVryle Spencer, Sabrina Jeffries, Mary Jo Putney, Teresa Medeiros and Catherine Anderson. As for "Once A Warrior", I would recommend borrowing it from the library, as I don't think it's a keeper.
Not your typical warrior.......2005-04-06
I really liked this book. I was concerned before I read it that I might not like it. Some of the other reviews had me worried. However, I was pleasantly surprised. I have not read any of her other books so I cant compare it to those but I would definetly recommend this read. It is unusual to have a hero that does not have the perfect warriors body but I liked having that different twist. I didnt give it five stars because I wouldnt rate it with the best books I have ever read but time flew by and I enjoyed every minute!
Book Description
"Hodgson presents us with a complex, interactive picture of change over time, one dominated neither by the Maasai nor the state and development apparatus. . . . The Maasai emerge not simply as the 'intrepid warriors' envisioned by government and development officials, or even sometimes by themselves, but as active agents in the construction of their own history. This history, however, is often contradictory, contested, and varied." --Jane Parpart

Find this book today. Buy it. Period........2003-11-23
Fran Baker's novel may have been written a few years ago, but do yourself a favor order this book. It will move you--if it moved me -- and it did -- then it will move you, too.
What more can you ask from a reading experience? (that's a rhetorical question, by the way).
Excellent book!.......2002-10-05
I'm not sure I can add much to the praise that's already been expressed. Except to say that Ms. Baker did an exceptional job of capturing our country's history and the way we lived and loved in wartime. This book should be made into a movie or a TV mini-series, it's that good. I've already recommended it to several other readers I know.
Couldn't put it down........2001-09-18
This is one of the best novels I've ever read. 'Nuf said.
Fran Baker Does It Again!!!.......2001-07-31
Fran Baker has become one of my all time favorite authors. Her Once A Warrior had me on my toes, crying, cheering and longing for more. I savored every word and can see the settings and characters as vividly as though they were part of my own world. The longing for lost love, the adrenaline rush of lives in peril, the horrors of war and the acceptance of a child left behind but not forgotten, touched me profoundly
Diversity is such a wonderful and refreshing quality to witness in a writer. While we writers are often labeled ý genre wise ý Fran Baker stands out like a beacon in the literary arena. Her crisp, often funny delivery, intelligence, insight to the human heart and soul make her a winner in my book.
TipWorld Review - February 2000.......2000-06-02
Moving her story deftly between the 1940s and the 1990s, Baker offers readers something new and different in the romance genre. Many romances are set against the backdrop of war. ONCE A WARRIOR takes the reader straight inside the wars that have shaped the second half of the 20th century. A multigenerational saga, ONCE A WARRIOR presents a culturally diverse set of characters, including a French woman fighting underground with the Resistance in World War II to a Chinese-American man fighting in Vietnam. Although this story is sure to have special appeal to families in the military, it will also satisfy the reader looking for an unusual romance.
