Book Description
A spectacularly illustrated reference.
Roses are valued for many reasons including beauty, symbolism, fragrance, and history.
The Rose tells the fascinating story of this treasured flower accompanied by lively text and sumptuous full color illustrations. The book is divided into three sections: Roses of Nature, Roses of History and Roses by Design. Each section traces the links that tie the wild roses of nature to the earliest roses of civilization. It also explodes a few myths along the way and tells how the tireless efforts of horticulturists from many nations have brought into being the full-petalled beauties of today.
The captivating archival illustrations are from the Royal Horticultural Society's collection, home to one of the world's finest archives of horticultural art. This spectacular collection of roses of every description is certain to capture the hearts of gardeners and art lovers alike.

Gorgeous book for the botanical art lover.......2005-04-19
This large coffee-table book features beautiful rose illustations, many never seen before, from the archives of the Royal Horticultural Society. The artists include John Lindley, Alfred Parsons, Mary Lawrence and of course probably the most famous rose artist of all time, Pierre Joseph Redoute. The author also includes an introduction to the history of rose cultivation, from 5000 years ago in China when species roses were grown and he discusses how these roses were used by present day hybridizers to create our modern-day roses. Many of these roses' history have been unknown but recent DNA analysis has helped solve the mysteries of their heritage. Highly informative or just beautiful to look at, this is a beautiful book.
Customer Reviews:
They didn't teach this in history class............2007-09-16
This book reads more like a textbook than a novel, but the historical information and photos are anything but boring. There are some wild stories about what these "buiseness women" did to one another that left my mouth gaping. I had no idea prior to reading this book how districts like these thrived. This is a thourough historical account that is worth reading.
Awesome and Informative.......2007-09-13
I thought the transcripts from the interviews that Mr. Rose held with the (amazingly) still living, former residents and tradespeople were outstanding. Through their words you really got an idea of what life was like and the way they thought about things. He also remained true to his subjects by capturing the dialect in the interviews.
Also, he does a great job with mapping the district using the few remaining photographs and maps of the time in conjunction with the written descriptions of each of the brothels, bars, and cribs. Some of the pictures by Ernest Bellocq that were printed in this book I hadn't seen before.
Overall it's a very good read, and a must for New Orleans history lovers.
Thorough, detailed, fascinating.......2007-09-07
Covers the truly bizarre (and lewd) phenomenon of Storyville -- an 1897-1917 experiment with segregating all prostitution in the city into a 4 block x 4 block area. This was obviously a real labor of love. Al Rose appears to have looked under every sheet and peered into every closet. He has amassed a very large collection of interviews, correspondence, printed material, and photos. The final product is interesting, well organized, well illustrated, and well written. It is amazing what he fits into 200 large pages.
I'd highly recommend this adult glimpse into a seedier and less discussed element of New Orleans' unique and offbeat culture.
More important now than ever........2006-07-29
As we cope with the loss of beautiful New Orleans, this scholarly work on the Storyville district of that wonderful town documents not only the factual matters, but also the elusive spirit and energy of the Crescent City. A must-buy book for those who want to remember what once was New Orleans, and is now our own Atlantis. May she live in memory, with all her tattered regiment, for ever.
14 years in the making.......2003-09-04
Al Rose was a mentor and great friend to me. He died in New Orleans about two years ago and was given a jazz funeral. He researched Storyville for 14 years. Many of the records had intentionally been destroyed. At the time he began the research he was living in Hollywood, Fl and wanted to paint a mural and map of Storyville on a wall in his home. He was a wonderful artist as well as writer. When he went to find a good map of Storyville and more details he discovered that the records of ownership of the well known houses of prostitution had been razored out of the official deed books. Intrigued by this he went on and on and the result was Storyville. He was a renaissance man: artist, writer, jazz impressario, labor organizer. He fought in the Spanish Civil War and worked with the Quakers to smuggle social democratic leaders out of eastern europe after the soviets took over. He studied under Diego Rivera, knew Trotsky, was a friend and confidant of every great jazz musician of the 20th Century and befriended all of them. I sat in his living room one night while Eubie Blake played the piano. Al wrote his biography and knew him for 50 years. He produced jazz records for the State of Louisina, still much in demand by collectors. The records bear the legend, "recorded under the personal supervision of Al Rose." His real name was much longer---he was from a very old New Orleans family and actually has to take fencing lessons in case he had to fight a duel. he would be extremely pleased at the reviews on this site. I miss him a lot.
Book Description
In this swashbuckling novel, by the author of Treasure Island, young Dick Shelton is left orphaned. So he seeks the help of the mysterious Black Arrow fellowship. Brimming with adventure and suspense, this is a portrait of England during the War of the Roses, when many, like Dick, were torn between their loyalties.
Download Description
Below, in the bottom of a considerable valley, the short cut from Tunstall hamlet wound downwards to the ferry. It was well beaten, and the eye followed it easily from point to point. Here it was bordered by open glades; there the forest closed upon it; every hundred yards it ran beside an ambush. Far down the path, the sun shone on seven steel salets.
Customer Reviews:
Not quite what I was expecting.......2007-04-29
I picked up The Black Arrow on speculation, driven by three considerations - it was written by Robert Louis Stevenson, I had vague but good memories of the old TV series the Black Arrow and well it was going cheap at a jumble sale.
The Black Arrow relates the adventures of Richard Shelton, a orphan and ward of Sir Daniel a landed knight and veteran warrior of questionable loyalty who has been successfully negotiating the War of the Roses siding with either York or Lancaster based upon who is on top and who is currently providing the best opportunity for material advancement. The only cloud on Sir Daniel's horizon is the mysterious order of the "Black Arrow", a band of outlaws who have previously been injured by Sir Daniel and who have now sworn themselves to his death and the death of his supporters. Although initially Sir Daniel's loyal ally, Dick eventually becomes aware that Sir Daniel may in fact be responsible for his fathers death. Forced to flee from Sir Daniel's house (and his true love in the form of Joanna another ward of Sir Daniel's), Richard joins the order of the black arrow and swear vengeance for his fathers death. What follows is a series of adventures with espionage, fencing, shipwrecks and many deaths, culminating in Dick joining forces with the Yorkist forces lead by Richard of Gloucester at the battle of Shoresby, where they confront the forces of Lancaster including Sir Daniel.
So why do I say that this is not quite what I expected? Well I was expecting in Dick, a hero from your standard boys own adventure, you know the type brave to a fault, a strong fighter, smart and wise beyond his years and completely moral. Instead Stevenson defied my expectation by presenting Dick as brave and strong and honorable, but not terribly smart, capable of making very bad decisions which have a terrible affect upon the lives of those around him, someone whose lack of experience means that he is regularly trumped by his opponents. And although in the end, Richard is knight and married to his love, he is judged by Richard of Gloucester as a man who I will go no further a man who has reached his natural level of advancement a judgment which I found myself agreeing with.
The Black Arrow.......2007-01-23
The book I chose to read for my book report was the Black Arrow. The Black Arrow was written by R.L. Stevenson and was illustrated by Lionel Richards. The Black Arrow is a good historical fiction book that takes place during the English civil war against the Yorkists and the Lancastrians. The following paragraph will give you a short summary of the book I read.
The story is about a knight named Dick who goes on an epic quest to find and destroy the group, the Black Arrows. It leads him to a forest and a victorious battlefield. This book would be best suited for people who prefer historical long fiction books. I thought it needed to be shorter and more easier for younger readers to understand
The Black Arrow.......2006-10-20
Book review-Black arrow
The Black arrow starts off very, very slow. It picks up at the end, thankfully. The book is a long one, at first it's very hard to follow. The plot also gets better as you get deeper into the book. It's a good book if you want to read something over a long period of time. The story takes place in at the time of the War of the Roses and follows the book's hero Dick. This book is clearly an action book. The main character, Dick is likeable enough. In this book, Dick encounters the Black arrow, a battle, a castle and more. This isn't one of Robert Louis Stevenson's best books, but yet is respectable. The original book was written in French and translated so it's got some weird words. Maybe some people would rank it higher, I'm a young guy so I may think it's hard to follow. For me, it's just too long and difficult to follow to be a really good book. Stevenson though has got some good books out there, though, including: Treasure Island, Kidnapped and more.
The Best!.......2006-07-25
This book has problems. I can count two. The first is the dialogue, which is a little too self-consciously archaic, and the second is the fact that the second half of the book isn't quite as good as the first.
Other than that? This book has it all. Fencing! Fighting! True love! Revenge! Beautiful ladies!
The book starts off pretty quickly. After a few introductory scenes, we get into the first and best part of the book, which sees the hero and um, a friend, running for their lives through the forest. Stevenson's genius is evident here as he mixes action, suspense, character development, and mystery seamlessly together.
After this, the action slows down slightly, but the plot twists, surprises, battles, and excitement keep coming. The hero is human and relatable, the heroine fills her Spirited Heroine quota with as much gusto as the Damsel In Distress requirements. The Drunken Ex-Monk Sidekick is lovable and shrewd; the Greenwood Outlaw is magnificently protrayed; and there are special cameos by Richard of Gloucester and the heroine's talkative best friend.
This book has everything. Swordfights? Forced marches? Lurking in the undergrowth? A damsel in distress? A girl disguised as a boy? A storm at sea? An interrupted wedding? Outlaws? Spies? Treacherous uncles? Escaping from a castle window? Secret passages? Dang, it has everything but pirates and buried treasure, and you can get that in Treasure Island...
Two giants:R.L.Stevenson&N.C.Wyeth.......2005-05-01
This gorgeous edition of "THE BLACK ARROW" is a reissue of the book first published by Charles Scribner's Sons ,with N.C. Wyeth illustrations ,in 1916.Now,it is one of the splendid Scribner Illustrated Classics reissued by the Simon&Shuster Children's Publishing Division through its imprint ATHENEUM BOOKS FOR YOUNG READERS.Originally published in 1888,"THE BLACK ARROW" is a wonderful reading for people of all ages, not just for adolescents. This story was first serialised in YOUNG FOLKS(a popular british magazine for boys where "TREASURE ISLAND" also appeared for the first time) in seventeenth weekly instalments and was a success.Set in the reign of Henry VI during the troubled years of the War of the Roses, this Stevenson's novel was, at the time,a popular adventure story.Colorful characters grace this book. The hero,Richard Shelton, was imagined by Stevenson. But there is a historical personage described in the novel:the Duke of Gloucester(later Richard III).This edition's beautiful endpapers, frontspiece, and other fourteenth illustrations were painted by one of the greatest american illustrators of all time:NEWEL CONVERS WYETH(1882-1945).A giant as big as Robert Louis Stevenson(1850-94).

pretty close to 'Ultimate'.......2007-05-23
This book does a great job of going over almost all the facets of starting and airbrushing. One of the most complete books I've seen.
great info.......2007-01-16
I gave this book to my husband along with a new airbrush & it's been a great help to him, includes info that even the airbrush didn't company give.
Comprehensive Excellence!!.......2005-09-08
The "Ultimate Airbrush Handbook" is exactly what it's title says is! No hyperbole in the title. It covers all aspects of airbrushing, useful to everyone, including newbies like myself. Well worth the money spent!
Ultimate Airbrush Handbook.......2005-07-21
Excellent. As the title states the "ultimate". Should be the first book purchased, borrowed or stolen for the enthusiast.
Great book.......2005-04-22
I've read other "how to airbrush" books, but this one is the best.
There is something for everyone from beginner (me) to advanced airbrushers.
From masking to freehand airbrushing.
Easy and simple to understand.
Once I received it and started reading it,I couldn't put it down.
So many things I thought I knew, but the book set me straight.
Other people on web forums had recommended this book, wish I had done it sooner.

Valuable resource on dyes and fabric paints.......2000-06-03
The name turned me away at first, as I am not dyeing for the theater. That was a mistake. While I don't need the chapters on how to set up a dye shop for a theatre, other information provided in this book is hard to come by elsewhere. Covers fiber reactive dyes, acid dyes, 1:2 metal complex dyes, direct dyes, basic dyes for acrylics, disperse dyes, metallics, textile paints, screen printing, 4 different discharge dyeing pastes, batik, blue printing and brown printing on fabric (or whole garments) using light, marbling, airbrush. Much more thorough treatment of potential hazards than any other dyeing book I've seen. Lists of carcinogenic dyes to avoid. Actual test results of fabric feel and fastness of many different textile paints, each on six different fibers. Good index.
Book Description
This book is designed to impart the techniques of using this effective tool quickly and easily. All three types of airbrush are examined and explained in simple terms. The title also boasts an excellent section on actually using the airbrush, and studies in depth the painting of four different miniatures. Clear photographs are taken of the painting process on each different model, showing all sorts of exciting techniques. Methods of lightening and darkening, representing camouflage and weathering and mixing exactly the right colour are all explained. A book that will suit both complete beginners and those wanting to get more out of their airbrush.
Customer Reviews:
Knoledge is keen........2006-02-24
This book is able to teach new techniques that can help in your hobby's. It is easy to understand but ther are other book's that give more information to help you with your projects.
TRY THIS BOOK FOR PERFECT SKIN COLORS.......2006-01-19
I am very happy to own this book which explains how to professionally paint human figures and aircraft with airbrush. Very important issue while modelling is using acrylic paint with and without airbrush. In this book you can find satisfactory explanations. If you want to be a professional model painter you must have this book.
Airbrushing.......2005-10-12
The book has some good basic knowledge about airbrushing. I highly recommend it to any beginners like me that don't know how to use an airbrush.
Scale Modelers View.......2000-04-20
The book is the regular Osprey size paperback with Beautiful full color Pictures Each chapter is mostly step-by-step pictures with some text.
One chapter shows an airbrush being disassembled. Another is step-by-step on how to build your own silent compressor. One chapter has to do with mixing your own colors.
The book seems to be more aim at general airbrush user instead of the scale model builder. I would have preferred more on thinning paints and setting pressures.
I do not recommend it.
The Testor's manual on plastic model building is more useful. It has a great chapter on troubleshooting and how to tell if the paint is too thick or thin, or if the pressure is too high or too low.
I think the Kalmbach Books' Painting and Finishing Scale Models is the best value on how to paint.
I'm still looking for a book that will help me become a better airbrusher.
Great pictures, little technical detail, not for kids!.......2000-04-11
The book has beautiful photographs of models that have been expertly painted. However, there isn't a great deal of information on how to render these effects. I bought the book for my son to use in detailing model cars and model superheroes only to find that a large part of the book is devoted to painting nude fairies! These are anatomically correct women with butterfly wings on their back. Needless to say, we won't be using this book. I am writing this review primarily to warn other parents considering this book for their kids.
Book Description
Airbrushing is gaining popularity among carvers of decoys and waterfowl. Since 1987 Veasey Studios, under the supervision of Michael Veasey, has sealed, undercoated, and accomplished the basic color blending on approximately 40,000 carvings using the airbrush. In this great new book you will see just how easy it really is to use. With step-by-step instructions, you will move from the beginning to finishing a drake and hen teal duck. When you are finished you will find that the airbrush, when used in conjunction with traditional brush techniques, will add to your joy of carving and the quality of your work.

Okay but could have been better.......2004-10-29
The first thing that I noticed about this book is it had a lot of pictures and not alot of info on how to airbrush t-shirts. However I did find the book useful in creating new designs and to know what needed to be done and in what order. Over all it is a good book to get you exited about airbrushing on textiles but doesn't give you enough information on on to do it.
Product Description
Learn airbrushing tips and techniques from the experts! Using an airbrush gives scale models a smooth, professional-looking finish, but it can seem complex at first. This booklet provides a clear guide on getting the most out of your airbrush, including proper cleaning and maintenance techniques. From the pages of FineScale Modeler magazine.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent choice for a beginner in airbrushing.......2006-11-18
At eight chapters in nineteen pages, this is a very slim little volume. That turns out to be a virtue in this booklet intended for the absolute beginner in airbrushing. Having purchased but never actually used an airbrush, I had a number of concerns about proper handling and, especially, cleaning. This book systematically and with no wasted words addressed all my initial questions. The chapters include choosing, cleaning and handling an airbrush; recognizing common paint problems and how to correct them, the varieties of paint and the proper thinners for each, and solvent safety issues--including some solid advice on proper installation of your spray booth. The final few pages illustrate the airbrushing of a Liberty ship model, with some very useful tips on dealing with small parts. Overall, an excellent and efficient introduction to the subject and an entirely worthwhile purchase.
