Oprah Book Club® Selection, April 1997: Members of the Church of Fire and Brimstone and God's Almighty Baptizing Wind spend their days and nights serving the Lord and waiting for the Rapture--that moment just before the Second Coming of Christ when the saved will be lifted bodily to heaven and the damned will be left behind to face the thousand years of tribulation on earth. The tribulation, according to Grandpa Herman, founder of Fire and Brimstone, will be an ugly time: "He said that we'd run out of food. That big bugs would chase us around and sting us with their tails . . . He said we'd turn on the faucet in the bathroom and find only blood running out . . . He said evil multitudes would come unto us and cut off our limbs, and that we wouldn't die . . . And then he'd say, 'But you don't have to be left behind. You can go straight to Heaven with all of God's special children if you'll only open your hearts to Jesus . . .'"

Such talk of damnation weighs heavy on the mind of Ninah Huff, the 15-year-old narrator of Sheri Reynolds's second novel, The Rapture of Canaan. To distract her from sinful thoughts about her prayer partner James, Ninah puts pecan shells in her shoes and nettles in her bed. But concentrating on the Passion of Jesus cannot, in the end, deter Ninah and James from their passion for each other, and the consequences prove both tragic and transforming for the entire community.

The Rapture of Canaan is a book about miracles, and in writing it, Reynolds has performed something of a miracle herself. Although the church's beliefs and practices may seem extreme (sleeping in an open grave, mortifying the flesh with barbed wire), its members are complex and profoundly sympathetic as they wrestle with the contradictions of Fire and Brimstone's theology, the temptations of the outside world, and the frailties of the human heart.

I didn't like this book. It was very well written, but in the end I was disappointed. In order to like a book, and its characters and its story, I have to believe what I am reading. If the storyline has me perplexed, because the characters are doing things that would not be within the normal parameters of the plot and theme, I scratch my head. If this was truly a community of religious people, following their leaders rules and regulations no matter how ridiculous or abusive, than the events would have ever taken place. You have to suspend disbelief and I don't like doing that. Ninah and James would have NEVER been aloud to be alone, never. Not for Prayer time, quiet time or hammer time. Grandpa Herman, while not the smartest man alive, would have been worldly enough to know the brains of young adults, no matter who they were. Now I know it's a work of fiction, and it "could have" happened, but something deep down in me kept doubting it and it ruined the book for me all together.

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievably moving!.......2007-06-19

This book really snuck up on me. One minute, I was reading in my normally disconnected manner; the next I was crying over how strongly I identified with the feelings of a teenage girl going through all of the growing pains that teenage girls do. The extreme nature of her upbringing only made me realize how similar everyone's internal experiences are, regardless of what's going on outside. It's been a long time since I was a teenager, but it all came rushing back to me reading this novel. It was tragic, yet exhilarating...absolutely amazing.

5 out of 5 stars Great book by a great author.......2007-06-08

Not a page of boredom in this book. Highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Eye Opener.......2007-05-09

While reading this book I couldn't help but think how far religion will take people in order to save their souls. One man's indication of "redemption" and what's "right and what's "wrong", along with the mindless people taging behind him like a flock of sheep. (Sheep will lead each other into a fire!) God forbid if any one ever asked "why?" All the more reason to stay away from organized religion! We all have our own path to walk and our own demons to fight. All in all, good story that's easy to read although a bit boaring in parts.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite book!.......2007-04-13

I read this book when I was around 12 years old, engulfed it in one day, and have read it numerous times since then. At first what captured my attention was simply the story; Ninah's story is one that stays with you. Sheri Reynolds gives us such a clear picture of Ninah's character and of her community. Her relationships are complex and genuine, especially with her grandmother. Their bond was something that touched me. Of course the setting is unique, Ninah lives in a religious community that in many aspects is similar to a cult.

What kept me reading was the gorgeous writing of Reynolds, I've yet to read writing more compassionate and exquisite. Some passages just give you goosebumps and you find yourself reading them over again to bask in their beauty.

This is a story about faith, love, and a young girl's journey to find her own interpretation of both. For me, this book was an excellent purchase simply because I can pick it up anytime and still be marveled at the beautiful language and thought-provoking tale.

              5 out of 5 stars A sad masterpiece.......2007-07-29

"The night before she lost her momma, Tessa Lee..." This book has an opening line that is going to stick in my head forever. I read the first few pages over and over again and it's a powerful opening line.

It gets sadder from there. Tessa Lee's momma doesn't die like I thought. Her momma abandons her and her baby brother in a campground, with Tessa Lee's grandma's number written on the diaper of her baby brother.

Fast forward a few years into the future. It gets sadder. Tessa Lee's grandfather and little brother have just died, and she's left alone with her grandmother. Tessa Lee finds her momma, and finds that her momma's a cheap prostitute and a drug addict. And then when Tessa Lee meets her momma for the first time, her momma freaks out, runs away. Tessa Lee lost her momma again.

I really like sad books. I really liked this book. And, it got much, much sadder.

But, the beauty of this book is in the rays of hope that shine through the sadness. It's like how I imagine mining for precious minerals would be. You sift through a bunch of dirt and muck, and finally see some stuff that is cool and wonderful and that you'll have with you for the rest of your life. The whole process, even though muck-filled, is entertaining and addicting.

I really liked a story about a minister who was a good person that made one of the characters realize, "Contrary to everything she'd suspected, all Christians weren't a--holes after all."

And, I've always felt awkward, and I'm fine with that, but I want to be able to fit in, too. One character's thoughts express this concept well, "She wasn't sure if she wanted to blend in or not. She wanted to be able to blend in, but then she still wanted the option of standing out."

The ending is also a pearl-- really super cool, very spectacular, and yet very plain.

              4 out of 5 stars Moving.......2007-03-10

"Firefly Cloak" is an interesting, often moving account of a teenager, the mother who abandoned her, and the grandmother who raised her. The characters are well drawn, but the prose is uneven. Some of the images are great, such as the complex patterns traced out by the rickshaw taxi. Some miss the mark, such as the image of the worm with which the book concludes. More of a problem is that Reynold's prose, while getting the job down, can be heavy handed.

4 out of 5 stars "Where was that space between ordinary and magical?...Her momma had disappeared into that space.".......2006-11-25

When Tessa Lee was eight years old and her brother Travis was four, their mother Sheila abondoned them. She left them sleeping in a tent while she ran off with the boyfriend du jour, leaving behind a phone number written in Magic Marker on Travis's back. The number, it turned out, belonged to Sheila's parents, who lived not two hours away in a "mobile city."

Now, seven years later, Travis is dead, and so is Tessa Lee's grandfather. While Tessa Lee's relationship with her grandmother Lil is undeniably strong, Tessa Lee can't stop thinking about her momma, can't stop obsessing over why she left. She clings to Sheila's old firefly cloak, the only physical thing she has left to remember her momma by. When she learns that Sheila may be working as a mermaid at a novelty museum by the shore, she jumps at the opportunity to get some answers. Tessa Lee hitchhikes the two hours to the Fantasies of the Boardwalk museum, and sure enough, her momma is there behind a pane of glass, reclining in a conch shell, her tail swinging gracefully over the side, whispering seductive instructions to passing patrons. Sheila looks downtrodden, fragile, broken, hollow, nothing like the momma Tessa Lee remembers. And when Sheila recognizes Tessa Lee, she does the only thing she knows how to do: She runs.

Over the next 200 pages, the lives of three remarkable women are revealed in Sheri Reynolds' luscious prose. Tessa Lee, Lil, and Sheila have three very different lives and personalities; in fact, the only thing they have in common is each other. Each woman's story is alternately heartbreaking and heartwarming, repulsive and remarkably touching. Lil, Tessa Lee, and Sheila are soulful and strong, believable and brave, heartbreakingly damaged and irrefutably human characters. The relationship between Tessa Lee and Lil is the best part of FIREFLY CLOAK, in my opinion; it's a beautiful relationship, one filled with mutual respect and unspoken understanding. The atmosphere of the novel is rich with Southern charm, and the prose has moments of pure genius. FIREFLY CLOAK is a sad novel, but one with a redemptive, perfectly-nuanced and satisfying conclusion.

FIREFLY CLOAK is a multi-generational story of love, loss, and forgiveness. At its most elemental, it's a story about the unbreakable bonds between mothers and daughters that not even time, distance, and cruelty can puncture. Sheri Reynolds' latest novel is a real winner, perceptive and beautiful and utterly affecting. You'll get through this relatively small book quickly -- but the characters and the writing will resound with you for a long time. Definitely recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Growing up .........2006-07-08

Is hard enough but when your mother leaves you and your brother, it can be even tougher. Tessa Lee and her brother Travis wake up one morning to have their mother gone and a number written on Travis. It is her Granny's number. They live with their grandparents. Two tragedies happen close together, leaving Tessa Lee wanting to find her mom. She does find her however, but her mom runs away before Tessa Lee has the chance to talk to her. Tessa Lee is a strong character, with a good spirit. I love the idea of the fireflies in the story. I won't give the ending away, but this book will clutch you and won't let go.

5 out of 5 stars WOW! Do not miss this one ~~~~~~~~~~~.......2006-07-07

Ms. Reynolds does not disappoint with this new novel. Having read her previous works, I was happy to see another book to add to her list of successes!

The characters are so life-like. You can feel the pain of Tessa Lee and the anguish and heartache that is part of her daily life. Her grandmother, Lil, is another strong person, one who believes strongly in God and takes on daily challenges with strength and love. Shelia; poor, sad, white-trash, confused Shelia, is another great character.

Don't miss this book. It is a quick, easy read. You will root for Tessa Lee and marvel at the silent courage she has that helps her deal with her life.

This is a great book for you to read and to tell ALL of your friends about. Don't miss it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

At the time of writing this review there had already been 58 before me and they total an average of 5 stars. What more can really be said? I found this book very enjoying and thought provoking. Although Randall says to skip book one "Transgression" I'm very pleased I didn't. It added so much to the enjoyment of "Premonition". Great job Randall!!

This fast-pased novel captured and held my interest, being different from anything that I read before. This is the first in the City of God series and has such interesting plot devices as time-traveling Israeli physicst, and a American-born Messianic Jewish archeologist trying to prevent the murder of the Apostle Paul in 57 A.D. (CE) Jerusalem, and a prostitute with a heart of gold. Mr. Ingermanson won a Christy Award for this book for good reason, It's fantastic. While the book is currently out of print, used copies can be found, and are worth the search. You will want to get the other two books in this series, "Premonition" and "Retribution."

4 out of 5 stars Finally, a great Christian novel.......2005-06-24

I particularly like Ingermanson's approach to the novel because he wraps up so many things that I'm directly interested in: Messianic Jewish faith, physics, time travel and Jerusalem.

I found the very proper, concise dialog difficult to read through at first, but upon sticking with it I became comfortable with it and felt that it was very appropriate, considering the time frame and the fact that we just don't know how people of that time spoke to one another. Ingermanson is very consistent with his dialog and doesn't wander into colloquialisms or slang, unless it is on the part of the 21st century protagonists. I'm sure he had to be extremely careful when writing the dialog as he could easily slip. I appreciate the care he took here.

I also appreciate Ingermanson's knowledge of Jewish history, especially with regard to Josephus and Roman archives.

The story is well-written, the characters endearing and full-bodied. You'll find yourself rooting for Ari and Rivka.

Another interesting element is that Ingermanson isn't afraid to introduce elements that some Christians might be fearful to bring into fiction. While he doesn't talk directly about sex, he implies that it definitely did go on during that period. Characters are close to one another and you can tell that all of the things we go through as humans today they were going through. Ingermanson touches on such difficult to broach subjects as adultery, incest and abortion.

Ingermanson does a good job with the evil antagonist as well. There is plenty of tension. You feel really badly for Ari, for example, when the antagonist sets him up for failure and Ari is essentially black-balled from the community for a time.

I don't really have anything negative to say about the book. Why only 4 stars as opposed to 5? I guess I would say that maybe Ingermanson tries to wrap a little too much into the book. For example, perhaps the part about meeting the apostle Paul (Saul in the book) could've been left out with the book still being provocative. But it's a slight thing and I don't fault Ingermanson for leaving it in either.

Christians who are tired of namby-pamby fiction that doesn't go anywhere or do anything and has the same oft-repeated ideas as previous works will enjoy Ingermanson's work. It is refreshing and a treat.

                  Good work Randy!

                  3 out of 5 stars 1st Century Bible-based historical fiction.......2005-03-18

I really enjoy reading historical fiction. When I discovered Transgression, the first book in the series, I couldn't put it down. It was full of energy, suspense, and action. So I eagerly looked forward to reading Premonition. When it finally arrived, I eagerly started reading about the ongoing adventures of Rivka and Ari. While I found the book hard to put down, I didn't think it was quite as good as Transgression. Don't get me wrong - it is a good book to read, but didn't seem to have the same level of energy and suspense.

4 out of 5 stars Brings 1st Century Palestine to life........2005-03-09

I've read a fair amount of alternative fiction - enjoying Turtledove and Gingrich greatly - but this book is different. Is the timeline diverting or not? Is this alternative fiction or a just a story about 2 modern people trapped in 57 AD.
Ingermanson's story is interesting and compelling, but not quite satisfying. His characters are strong and believable. One really comes to hate Hanan ben Hanan. However, the story doesn't have a strong payoff.
This book is a good lesson on honor and forgiveness. As Ingermanson uses Jesus' words wisely to show that honor (what we might call status) is not what God desires, but rather forgiveness. His characters display this powerfully and authentically.
There were some gliches such as how many times I had to read that "The Romans crucified Jesus" and that "Christians killed Jews." But overall Ingermanson brings first century Palestine to life without difficult language. A nice read.

Do you like suspicion? Mysteries? Well, Jude Watson book, Disappearance: Apremonitions Mystery is the book you should read. It has drama, suspense, and mysteries.
The setting of this story is in the fall time, and the main characters are Gracie, a sixteen-year-old, Shay, Gracie's anut, Joe, Shay's business partner, and Diego, Gracie's cousin.
Gracie never knew her father, who disappeared when she was little and was never heard from again. Now, after her mother's death, he's back, with some dark secrets.
The problem is that Gracie wants to solve a mystery that started when she and her cousin's friends poke around and discover a dead body in the lake nearby.
Jude Watson is the best-selling author of the Jedi Apperentice and Jedi Quest series. Disappearance: A Premonitions Mystery is the second Premonitions mystery.
The parts in the book that I really like are the parts at the end of the chapter, because it gives a foreshadowing of what would happen in the next chapter, and it gave me a good suspense.
I recommend this book for anybody who loves suspense and mystery books and foreshadowing, because it has a lot of it in the book and this book should be only read by people who love Jude Watson books or people who just love mystery and suspense.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding mystery..........2005-10-10

I was a big fan of the original Premonitions novel, and had originally figured that Jordan Cray would have a difficult time topping herself. Sequels that outstrip their successors are so rare and hard to come by, it's such a refreshing breath of fresh air to find a novel that meets and exceeds all the expectations held by fans of the original, while at the same time maintaining the overall tone and feel of the original. Gracie is still the quiet but intelligent leading gal that she was the first time around, and her visions are still going to get her in trouble. Like all good sequels though, Disappearance raises the stakes, and Gracie's father reappears after thirteen years of absence around the same time as a dead body is uncovered in the water and Gracie's island home is turned upside down. With the help of her computer hacker friend Ryan, (man, he sure seems like a cool guy, and he's so nice too!) Gracie's visions make her the only person who has a chance to simultaneously get to the bottom of both mysteries. Disappearance was a wonderful, unpredictable thrill ride all the way through, full of brilliant twists and turns and equally brilliant and well-drawn characters. The two main story arcs of the book - Gracie and her father, and Gracie and the murder - intertwine slowly but ingeniously, and where they take the reader, you won't know until the very last minute.

A terrific read, and a book that I would strongly reccomend to everyone.

5 out of 5 stars A sequel even better than the original.......2005-09-23

Gracie from PREMONITIONS has returned with her visions. This time, though, she sees a murder from the murderer's eyes. If that isn't creepy enough, Gracie's father comes back into her life after 13 years of not seeing or hearing from him. She's still struggling with grief from her mother's death two years ago, and adjusting to living with her aunt Shay and cousin Diego.

With all this going on, Gracie is determined to solve the murder plaguing her senses. She tries going where the victim went to catch a vision from things he touched, with startling success. But each time she uncovers a clue, the danger moves closer to her --- and she accidentally unearths secrets about her father, her aunt, and her past. Visions do not solve all these issues, but she learns to let them lead her in the right direction.

Diego and Shay are supportive of Gracie's efforts, even as she considers going to live with her father. But who is he? Gracie's dad becomes another mystery to solve.

DISAPPEARANCE is a definite page-turner. Readers will be drawn into the mysteries around Gracie and her community as they follow her unexpected visions. This is a rare case of the sequel being even better than the original. The series is gaining momentum and hopefully will continue.

I have just finished reading this book and I would recommend it to anyone who likes a good mystery solved or for anyone who always has to find out what's going on in the story. This story is about a young girl named Gracie, who has physic abilities. Her mother had past away in a car accident and is now living with her mean annoying aunt Shay and her silent cousin Diego. While Gracie has been having these physic visions she meets a new friend from school and while having her own problems in life her friend goes missing. So now it's up too Gracie to find her new kidnapped friend by having to go through painful premonitions.

I believe it was an easy book to read and that you will enjoy having a good time reading it with someone else. I rate this book 3 stars because is was not that interesting as I hoped even though the authors word choice and tone of the story kept me hooked on it, and as for being myself I cannot let a good mystery book pass right before my eyes. So if u enjoy these types of books I say you go for it and buy this book.

I just finished this book for the second time and I definately reccomend it. It's about a young girl I think somewhere around fourteen or fifteen, who has physic abilities. She's lost her mother in a car accident and now lives with her overbearing annoying aunt, and silent mysterious cousin. Gracie, the young girl, has only made one friend since she moved in with her aunt and Gracie is too caught up in her own problems to pay attention to this friend. Well when this friend goes missing she knows its up to her to help. But it's definately not easy and she goes through many life changing events on the way. It's a must read, a page turner, whatever you want to call it you MUST read this book. Props to Jude Watson.

Her arrival in Arizona awakens Kayla's latent ability to have premonitions she doesn't want and can't handle until she discovers she must face them, or go crazy avoiding them. While dealing with her abilities, Kayla learns the value of friendship, renews her faith in love and reveals the identity of an attempted murderer who could change the lives of everyone around her if she doesn't learn to trust her instincts and deal with her dreams.

Wonderful believable characters, set in one of my favorite places in the world, a great plot, with a little bit of mysticism thrown in with the mystery. What more could one want? I can't wait for Charlene's next book!

5 out of 5 stars An Engaging Debut Novel.......2007-03-08

In Her Dreams combines the compelling lore of Native American culture, the potent spiritual energy of Sedona, Arizona, and the wiles of a determined young woman in a tale of romance, danger, and mysticism.

When a two-bit carnival fortune teller tells Kayla McAllister that her dreams hold the key to many lives, she isn't as adept at laughing it off as she'd like. She has premonitions, magnified to intense proportions by a sacred amethyst crystal gifted to her by the gypsy. Still, visions alone don't hold all the answers as Kayla must journey through the murky waters of fiery passion, a friend's unplanned pregnancy, and attempted murder to awaken the true power within.

C.S. Engeron's first novel offers a tantalizing blend of human drama and mystical forces to enervate a spicy cast of characters.

Dr. Jeremy and Hannah Larson have been married for one year and act like newlyweds especially with insane killer Tom Madison locked up in a sanitarium. However, their idyll life together abruptly ends when Aden Wellington enters their lives. Hannah fears Aden like he is the Anti-Christ, but she cannot explain why she feels so strongly negative towards him.

Their mutual friend, Miranda shares that same fear and premonition that frightens Hannah. Though Miranda would prefer to avoid Aden, she has changed since she fled from Tom's "control" and fell in love and married her Joseph. The new caring Miranda believes she must come to the aid of her two friends if they are to survive an evil from one thought as dead. Her worst premonition is that there is nothing she can do for her friend as her pal's DESTINATION seems that of a victim assaulted by malevolence who wants everyone associated with Hannah dead.

PREMONITION is a terrific sequel that keeps the foreboding of a pending tragedy at extremely high levels of suspense. The story line never slows down for a moment as the key "good guys" struggle with a wickedness that will chill readers to the bone. Fans of paranormal suspense horror thrillers will want to read this book; this reviewer has a premonition that once you do, DESTINATION will follow.

Hannah and Jeremy share a perfect love. Their whirlwind romance was anything but ordinary, and just as they begin to believe that things are starting to settle down and they can concentrate on building a life together, and evil power threatens everything they hold dear.
Will their love be strong enough to overcome this terrifying menace, bent on their destruction? Will they find the strength and courage to risk everything to save each other and those who are dear to them?

It picks right up where Destination Unknown left off and you'll be shocked and amazed at the new characters that Jill Terry introduces us to in this exciting sequel. I can't wait to see what she comes up with next.

                      Book Description

Reaching back as far as medieval Rus and as far forward as metrical and linguistic innovation permit, Sosnora has written with a voice unique and wideranging. Historical allusion, conscious anachronism, humor, and intensity of word play dominate by turns his range of verse.

Viktor Sosnora was born in 1936 in the Crimea. He is known as one of the most consistently experimental of Russian poets, and one of the foremost translators, into Russian, of Catullus, Oscar Wilde, Edgar Allan Poe, and Allen Ginsberg.

Mark Halperin teaches at Central Washington University. His latest book of poems, The Measure of Islands, was published by Wesleyan.

Dinara Georgeoliani is a linguist and Assistant Professor of Russian at Central Washington University.
