First class.......2007-08-28
This is the gold standard of cold war naval politics. I recommend the reader to watch the movie too. Most interesting to me are the personalities of Marco Ramius, Jonesy and Manusco. Although Ryan is the reason the story unfolds all the military, executive and diplomatic characters so perfectly depicted by Tom Clancy is the reason that makes the story so great. Tom Clancy also shows the reader the details of the SOSUS network and the skills and risks of submarine navigation.
Love this book and the movie too!.......2007-08-26
This book is astounding and a must have for any Tom Clancy Fan. I actually saw the movie first before reading the book. So naturally the actors faces from the movie filled the pages.
A must have. This is a cold war story at its best.
Excellent thriller/adventure book!.......2007-06-01
Jack Ryan is a great character and Tom Clancy is a great author. This book has a slow beginning but turns out to be a great story. The storyline is excellent and engages the reader in a series of twists and turns that take you from the bottom of the Atlantic to Washington D.C. and then across the world to Moscow. I really enjoyed the sections that are on the Dallas; they are extremely detailed and painted a picture in my mind of what it would look like. My favorite part of the book is when Jack had to fly out to the Atlantic to brief the fleet commanders, it was and extremely detailed and even made me feel like I was strapped into a helicopter over the stormy Atlantic. The intricacy of everything that was described was extremely good. The research was conducted beautifully and goes into great detail of everything that is talked about. This is an excellent book and is very fast paced. I read this after Patriot Games and can't wait to start my next Clancy novel.
My first Clancy book... the one that hooked me!.......2007-05-03
I read this book years ago while I was doing my A-Levels (pre-U), and this book was the one that made me a Clancy fan.
From then, I got all his Jack Ryan books until Executive Order.
While the others may have past their expiry date (do-not-read-again-onced-read), I still find reading Red October a joy once a while.
This techno thriller grips you with the intricate details of submarine & anti-submarine warfare. The writing style and flow makes it easy and interesting for the reader to follow.
The other feature that turns the pages is the conflict between a phd scholar, business savvy, ex-marine who clashes with the typical military sterotype. He being a reluctant, but it-had-to-be-done attitude, gives this hero a very honourable image. An image that one would want to relate to.
The first copy I bought of this book has long since gone... probably I had left it on a table or chair somewhere, but I still have my second copy until today. A good read.
submarine ride through the Atlantic.......2007-04-07
Take a submarine ride through the Atlantic during the 'cold war'. Another engrossing war games novel by Tom Clancy. Not as good as "Red Storm Rising" but right up there. He moves us quickly through the scenes aboard U.S. and Russian ships and submarines, along with making stops at the Capitol and the Kremlin. The tension builds, as the U.S. maneuvers to try and stop Russian subs from killing the defecting Red October. Exciting read, with occasional poetic interjection. Clancy delivers a powerful clash of cultures.
Wish you well
Scott
Book Description
A deadly serious game of hide-and-seek is on. The CIA's brilliant young analyst, Jack Ryan, thinks he knows the reason for the sudden Red Fleet operation: the Soviets' most valuable ship, the Red October, is attempting to defect to the United States.
The new ballistic-missile submarine's defection is high treason on an unprecedented scale and nearly the entire Soviet Atlantic Fleet has been ordered to find and destroy her at all costs. If the U.S. fleet can locate her first and get her safely to port, it will be the intelligence coup of all time.
The nerve-wracking hunt goes on for eighteen days as the Red October tries to elude her hunters across 4000 miles of ocean. The rousing climax is one of the most thrilling underwater scenes ever written.

Hunt for Red October by Tom Clancy.......2007-09-19
In my opinion this is one of the two best books written by Clancy. And I've never read anything by Tom Clancy I have not thoroughy enjoyed reading.
CD set Hunt for Red October.......2007-01-05
This is one of my favorite books- and I am not disappointed in the story-I give that a 5. However, there is an annoying aspect to the recording for this audio book, which is why I gave it a 3 star rating overall. There are many instances of speed skipping on the sound--you can understand all the words okay, but there are many that go fast like a skipping record. I am not sure if it's just my copy, or all of them, as this annoying speed skipping occurs on all discs in the set. The speed of the recording may have be upped to shorten the number of discs--and the recording company just pushed it a little too far--I dont' know. If you like Tom Clancy's work, and you want an audio version, this is still good.
CD is a treat!.......2006-09-06
Over the past decade, I've 1) read the book, 2) watched the movie, and 3) now listened to the book on CD, narrated by J. Charles.
As Yoda would say, "Entertaining they are!"
The CD (unabridged) really reminded me how different the book is from the movie. J. Charles speaks quickly, so the audio book is really fast-paced. His Soviet accents are a bit heavy, but they grow on you as you get into the story.
Except for some very occasional language, I'd rate the book/CD "PG," so it is "safe" to have kids in the car as you are driving hither and yon (for an example of what I would label an "unsafe" CD, consider Jarhead).
Safe and entertaining!
Book Description
This real-life thriller inspired Tom Clancy's famous novel The Hunt for Red October. It chronicles a mutiny aboard one of the Soviets' most advanced warships, the destroyer Storozhevoy (Sentry in English), led by the ship's political officer, Valery Sablin, who intended to launch a revolution and overthrow the government. Word of the 1975 mutiny was suppressed by the Soviets, but an American naval officer studying at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, named Gregory Young managed to piece the story together. In 1982 Clancy came across Young's report of the incident and wrote the fictionalized account that launched his career.
One of the Cold War's most dramatic tales, the Sentry mutiny and the events that preceded and followed it have never before been told in detail. With the help of recently declassified KGB documents and Sablin family papers, Young and Russian linguist Nate Braden offer readers a full account of events as they unfolded. In telling the story, the authors shed light on the many myths of the Cold War, including the Soviet Union's military and economic capabilities.
Once poised for a brilliant future in the Soviet Navy, Sablin had been entrusted with indoctrinating his crew in Communist Party principles. But the disillusioned idealist had to make an agonizing choice between working within the system and destroying it. His candid, rational pleas to begin a new Russian revolution convinced half the Sentry officers and all the sailors to seize control of the ship and sail to Leningrad and overthrow Leonid Brezhnev. The ending to this true story, however, is far less rosy than Clancy's fiction. The Sentry never reached its destination, and the KGB executed Sablin. The authors hope the publication of their book will encourage the Russian government to open Sablin's entire files and provide answers to remaining questions regarding his fate.

My Cousin was on this ship.......2007-08-19
While visiting Latvia in 2006 and visiting a cousin in Saldus he mentioned to me he was on this ship a year prior tot he mutiny. I had never heard the story so on returning home I ordered the book thru Amazon (second hand and the postage cost more than the book - an absolute bargain). Apart from being a thrilling read it also highlighted the desperation of the captain who represented all that was good in the soul of those who longed for truth. A believer in the revolution he beleived he was doing the right thing as he expected a second Rusian Revolution to commence with his actions. Misguided or mad or just a true believer. Read the book and make up your own mind.
Trouble in Utopia.......2005-11-23
During most of the Cold War, the Soviet military was perceived as a highly effective fighting force with motivated servicemen and modern equipment. This book tells the other side of the story by describing a mutiny that was organized by a political officer looking for a public platform to denounce the corruption of the Brezhnev regime and foster a change towards a more idealistic communist society. It provides a good overview of life in the Soviet Navy and morale problems caused by poor food, very poor housing, and abusive hazing within the enlisted ranks. It also provides insight into how government paralysis over accepting criticism result in only two of the crew being criminally charged for the offense. Finally, the book discussed the ramifications of the mutiny with respect to Soviet politics and the perception of the Soviet military by the Western powers. The writing style is straightforward but very intelligible and the subject matter is very well handled in terms of scope and detail.
A term paper on an event in Soviet naval history.......2005-08-14
I heard that this book was an account of a true story about a mutiny in the Soviet navy that became the basis for Tom Clancy's first hit "The Hunt for Red October." Technically this is true. However, be warned that the number of pages devoted to appendicies and footnotes exceeds the number devoted to the mutiny. This is an academic biography of the political officer mutineer -- his history, his beliefs, something of the mutiny, and the political response that is as documented as it is boring. If you are looking for this type of information, the auther did a good job --it probably rates 4 stars. However, if you are looking for a sea story, you've been warned.
A True "Red October".......2005-05-25
The Soviet destroyer "Storozhevoy" (Sentry in English) was one of the Soviet Union's most modern ships in 1975. The political officer on board was one of the rising stars in the fleet. A dedicated communist he became convinced that the Government in the Soviet Union had deviated away from true communism. His solution was to get the crew of the ship to stage a mutiny where he was to launch a revolution to get rid of the current leadership and restore the Soviet Union to its original comunist goals.
Needless to say, the rest of the Soviet Navy did not take kindly to this sort of thing and neither did the KGB. Elements of the Soviet Navy attacked the "Storozhevoy," stopped it, boarded it, and arrested everyone.
This incident was the trigger for Tom Clancy to write "The Hunt for Red October." In one point in the movie Jack Ryan is talking to the president. And he mentions this incident, identifying the ship and the political officer.
This book isn't as exciting as the "Red October",but then again, it's true. An interesting story to come out of the Cold War.

The Weatherman All Fall Down The Hunt for Red October The Ex Nine Levels Down
Book Description
In this delightfully infectious novel of love and intrigue, Leslie Glass puts a sly and sexy spin on two of life’s most devastating certainties: death and taxes.
Cassandra Sales is a woman with a gift for nurturing things—her husband, the successful wine importer; her two adult children; the fabulous flowers in her garden. After twenty-six years of marriage, however, Cassie’s husband, Mitch, is spending more time skipping abroad than remaining at home with her. Tired of being a modest Long Island housewife who can’t even remember what it’s like to be kissed, Cassie has a face-lift to recapture her youthful allure. The surprise for her husband goes awry when Mitch returns home early from a business trip. When he sees the post-op horror show, he collapses on the spot.
The resulting coma may spare Mitch from the tax audit he’s facing, but Cassie is forced to step in and research the facts of her own life. What she discovers about Mitch and the family business shocks her to the core: her “loving” husband was preparing to divorce her, swindle her out of tons of money, and run off with another woman.
As Cassie recuperates, she realizes what she’s after is revenge. Big time. But she soon learns that the road to retribution can lead to unforeseen and often deadly complications.
In Over His Dead Body, Leslie Glass blends supreme suspense and warm-hearted romantic comedy into a perfect mélange that is as inevitable as. . . death and taxes.

Customer Reviews:
Help me pick which book to read next!!.......2006-04-22
I have recently finished Over His Dead Body by Leslie Glass and I loved it! I immediately started looking for more of her books, but was unable to decide which one sounded better. So I got three... A Killing Gift, For Love and Money: A Novel of Stocks and Robbers, & Tracking Time.
I can't wait to start them all!
Simply Awful.......2005-02-13
I can't think of a book I've ever read that had a cast of stupid, unlikeable characters such as this one. With no one to care about or root for, the book seemed to go on for ages, with pages and pages of nothing but filler, and nothing of substance happening.
What kind of woman finds out her brain-dead husband has been cheating on her for 12 years, is being investigated by the IRS, gets stonewalled by the family attorney, who happens to be her husband's best friend, and doesn't seek her own legal counsel? The whole book was filled with ridiculous events such as this one, where suspending belief didn't even make it plausible.
Bring back April Woo. This effort sucked.
one of the best.......2004-11-21
'over his dead body' is one of the best written, imaginative and fun books that i have ever had the pleasure to read. it's a total hoot with many turns of plot - a joy and page-turner. i have recommended it to all of my friends, and everyone has completely agreed with me.
we just LOVE ms. glass.
Delightful Departure.......2004-06-29
As a departure from her April Woo series, this is a delightful success. While not being a ordinary murder mystery, this does offer suspense when you realize every chapter reveals more information about her comatose husband. He turns out to be one of the most selfish cads I've read about in recent books. What makes this delightful is Ms. Glass's sense of humor about the thoroughly dislikable cast of characters. What a ride!
Why mess with a winning recipe?.......2003-11-30
As my title says, why mess with a winning recipe? Glass had a winner series of Detective April Woo book - witty and thrilling, with great characters. What else would you want in a murder mystery? I was TOTALLY disappointed with this trashy story, bad characters, who cares story line. I bought this book excited that Glass had a new April Woo book out and was undiscribably disappointed - especially because I live in Thailand had my friend bring the book all the way from the US! I recommend to skip this book, but do read her April Woo books, they are excellent! I can't wait for a new one to come out!
