The Good. The Bad. The Sex........2007-09-22
THE GOOD: Very unusual, creative sex scenes (this should probably go under the SEX category below, but it's the stand-out feature of this book, so I put it here). Though Zor and the other guys are wonderful alpha males, there's an undercurrent of feminism here that I liked. The women stand up to the men when they're out of line. The men protect the women and their brows knit in baffled consternation when women don't always see their way of thinking. There's humor and witty repartee, too.
Favorite scene: When modern-day woman Kyra is kidnapped by her lifemate Zor and taken to his world.
THE BAD: Not as carefully edited as it could be and the flow could have been more fluid, but this didn't detract from my enjoyment of the book. The old cover I have isn't the greatest, but this newer cover now is nice.
THE SEX: (See THE GOOD section above.) Sex scenes are sometimes humorous and always riveting and enjoyable. The main characters bond through an artifact and they stay monogamous. There is a bit of non-monogamous sensuality.
Favorite sex scene: Too many to list.
THE DECISION: A big thumbs up!
Very unusual and hot!.......2007-09-08
I liked that the female characters were strong. There's humor and witty repartee. And the sex is extremely hot, but not porn. It's unusual to say the least. This book held my interest bigtime and I'm looking forward to more of Jaid Black's books.
Well done!
It was funny but the rest of series is really bad........2007-08-18
I'm usually a romance reader - and I purchase many of them in ebook format. I came across Ellora's Cave and Samhain Publishing. I was feeling adventurous and decided to buy a few just to test the waters. A few of the Samhains were winners - like Shelly Laurenston's The Distressing Damsel. But I was pretty much disappointed by the stuff from Ellora's Cave. I bought this book, The Empress' New Clothes, and although I was shocked by some of the scenes - it's erotica, what do you expect? I found the book to be really funny. The world that Ms. Black created was different, to say the least. It went a little too far with the chauvinism in my opinion but it reads like the fantasy of a female who is strong but who secretly wants a stronger man to keep her in line - you know, erotic fantasy. Like an x-rated Barbarella. I can just imagine a young Jane Fonda or Jamie Lee Curtis playing the lead.
What disappointed me about the stuff from Ellora's Cave wasn't this book in particular. It did what it set out to do - titillate and entertain - that's why I gave it 3 stars. It was so outrageous and unbelievable that I was laughing till the tears came. I figured - okay, it's not Judith McNaught but it's funny - so I bought the next 3 books in the series in a lump. This is where the disappoinment comes in.
The rest of the series gives the impression that Ms. Black actually had a male ghost writer do the next installments and she just signed her name to them. First of all, they are really short and they are NOT female fantasy. They read like what a man thinks that a woman really fantasizes about but are actually degrading and disgusting to womanhood. It's as if the writer thinks that women really are animalistic inside and secretly want/need to be degraded - and would enjoy it. No woman in her right mind would find any of that appealing. A psychologist could have a field day analyzing the implications of this tendency towards bondage and degradation in fantasy. If that's what the "erotica" genre is like then I'll stick to romance and they can keep it.
So, in conclusion, TENC is funny. If you don't mind reading a whole lot of graphic sex and just want some light entertainment - then go for it. But stop there. Resist the series mentality that we have all developed. Don't even try to follow up on the stories of the other characters. Just laugh it off and let it go.
Jaid Black never steers me wrong.......2007-05-10
The Empress' New Clothes is the first in a series of books about a band of alpha male alien warriors who hail from the seventh dimension planet Tryston. Since the birth of female children is a rarity on Tryston, the Trystonni men often have to travel to other more primitive dimensions (like the first dimension where earth resides) to find their sacred mates. Such is the case with Zor Q'an Tal, High King of Tryston and Emperor. When Zor travels to earth, he finds a tax accountant named Kyra and brings her back to Tryston to make her his wife. Kyra soon learns that life on Tryston is nothing like life on earth. She is expected to remain naked at all times in her husband's presence, must endure his flirtations with Kefa slaves (enchanted women whose sole purpose is to bring pleasure), and is expected to hatch Zor's children while helping him run his kingdom.
The Empress' New Clothes was a new and interesting foray into sci fi for me and I wasn't sure if I would like it. I needn't have worried. Jaid Black has never steered me wrong. This story was playful, funny, and intimate while at the same time taking place in a interesting and creative world. I got the feeling Black hadn't yet ironed out all of the details of Trystonni culture when this book was written (nearly a decade ago), but what she did have worked for me. I like the idea of these warrior men who make their wives' pleasure one of their sole missions in life and who will protect their women and families at all costs. I found Zor enticing, if a bit arrogant, and I even liked Kyra. I will definitely check out the newer books in this series and would recommend this story to a friend.
Whoa, this is different-Understatement.......2007-03-19
I read a lot of mainstream romantic books and was a little shocked after reading this book. If you are turned of by graphic, downright pornographic sex scenes stop reading right now because this book is not for you.
Kyra, a young, beautiful accountant and her best friend Geris decide to spend their vacation at a spa known for its relaxation techniques. Upon their departure they encounter two 7 feet muscle bound men with long hair with glowing blue eyes. Kyra meets the gaze of the larger dark headed man and finds she cannot look away, the next thing she knows is her clothes are gone and she is being charged by the man and when he puts a necklace around her neck she falls asleep. When Kyra awakens it is to find herself aboard some sort of spaceship with this gorgeous but huge man lying atop her. He informs her that he is Zor, High King of Trystan and she is his life mate, the high queen. He then informs her that she is never to wear clothes in his presence and that when she is allowed to wear clothes it is a see-through sarong that leaves nothing to the imagination. Kyra is then introduced to Zor's brother Dak, a blond headed version of her new husband who informs her that he thinks her best friend Geris may have been his life mate. When Zor and Kyra arrive on his planet she is introduced to the erotic customs of a consummation feast where every unmarried warrior is allowed all kinds of sexual liberties with the married woman just short of consummation. I won't get graphic but then when the actual consummation takes place a high priestess must assist to make sure the new bride is not injured.
I'm not sure if I can get used to the graphic nature of these books, but it really was pretty good. If this is your thing, read this book.

Timeless Tales review by Amy Turpin.......2002-11-12
Rem Q'an Tal has been searching for his Sacred Mate since he was freed from marriage to a woman not meant for him, without success. The mighty warrior is showing the strain of a Trystoni male without a Sacred Mate, the one woman in the entire galaxy who can complete him. The change starting to transform him is frightening, to say the least.
As he quests to the fifth dimension, to Earth, he finally has success. Only finding his Sacred Mate is almost enough to push him over the edge to madness. His "wee wife" is the very picture of the Goddess he worships and Rem is enchanted, to say the least. His wife, the almost-spinster Giselle McKenzie, is covered from head to toe in the most bedeviling "spots!"
Giselle is not sure what to think about the giant warrior who has claimed her as his wife. The bouts of near-madness he endures are enough to wrench her heart, but, being the attentive if exasperated wife, she soon finds the cure for his ailment. What she cannot deal with is the fascination with her freckles every man she comes across seems to have once she leaves Earth!
Although she neither understands everything happening to her or why her feelings for this gentle-giant are growing with every passing minute in his presence, she knows she loves him with her very being. She knows this man would do anything to keep her safe. When he leaves her to go help his brother and best friend fight the very creature he almost became, even though she has her misgivings, she says nothing. She can only hope she has the courage to save his family.
For sure, a bewitching sequel to 'The Empress' New Clothes." I was hooked from the first! Ms. Black's style is endearing and she writes with outstanding humor. There were other stories within this work, some simply touched on enough to get the reader's attention, others more in-depth. Even though I am looking forward to reading those stories, which I'm sure was the author's intention; I found it distracted from the main story somewhat. Overall, this book was an outstanding read and is recommended for the lover of science fiction and romantica, or for anyone simply looking for something as humorous as it is fantastical!
Hot! Hot! Hot!.......2002-10-29
These book should be handled with fireproof gloves. Ms Black can burn up the pages with her love scenes, plus she writes a wonderful story. Each of the books is a continuing story with the plot adding new diminesions all the time. This book has some funny scenes in how Rem's Sacred Mate handles his rage.
Highly Recommended.......2002-02-22
Jaid Black never fails to amaze me. No Mercy is just as hot and fun as the Empress New Clothes. The characters are well developed and i would like to read more of the people of Planet Tryston. Keep em coming Ms Black.
Don't let others discourage you.......2002-02-22
This book is an outstanding example of romantica. The sex is steamy and the romance will make you cry. Giselle and Rem are two unforgettable characters, who engage in some unforgettable sex. This is another of Ms. Black's books that will not only go on your keeper shelf, but will end up saved on CD, on floppy, and any other place you can think of so that you'll never be without it. Don't miss it.
Really hot stuff!!.......2002-02-21
Book 2 of the Trek Mi Q'an series takes up where "The Empress' New Clothes" leaves off. Zor's brother, Rem, is in serious danger of irrevocably losing his humanity, or "devolving" into an uncontrollable beast if he doesn't find his true Sacred Mate. Giselle McKenzie is a freckled, saucy Aussie spinster who's trying to change her life by giving up - unsuccessfully - her virginity to a local man. Rem's and Giselle's match is preordained, but circumstances keep interfering with the claiming.
Once again, Jaid Black creates a fascinating world of erotic fantasy where the men are warriors extraordinaire and the women are there to please them - and love every minute of it. The sex is hot (and there's plenty of it), the characters are well-defined, and the dialog will keep you grinning. I eagerly await each new offering from Jaid - her imagination is endless and keeps me entertained.

Book Description
The assignment is a snap: Mrs. Pollifax just has to shoot some pictures at a quiet funeral outside Washington and take them to Sicily, where her old friend Farrell -- a former CIA agent turned art dealer -- anxiously awaits them.
But like all Mrs. P's assignments, so ostensibly suitable for the CIA's favorite garden club member, this one quickly turns lethal. Her welcoming committee in Palermo includes a most unlikely CIA agent and several unseen enemies. Unfriendly eyes also observe Mrs. P's rendezvous with Farrell in a secluded mountain village and weapons are soon displayed. With mysterious forces hot after them, she and Farrell scurry for safety to a fortified country villa, where the bizarre chatelaine, once a star on Madison Avenue, is almost as unnerving as the dangers she's protecting them from.
So, though the sun shines brightly, the food is delicious, and romance is in the air, Mrs. Pollifax is too busy handing out karate chops and playing catch-me-if-you-can with an assassin to enjoy the amenities . . . .

Different voice?.......2005-02-02
Dorothy Gilman is one of my favorite mystery writers. I've read all of her first nine books many, many times, and highly recommend them. In this book and the ones that follow the author's voice shifts so completely, I wonder if she is actually the one continuing to write them. Mrs. Pollifax's character changes, she is "cross" several times in the first few chapters and the old Mrs. Pollifax was curious and philosophical and observant. This philosophical bent disappears entirely from these later books.
The adventures no longer sizzle along. An early chase in this book is poorly crafted; as it happens it is described without enough detail to make it interesting or suspensful and we are told Mrs. Pollifax looks back on it as a "nightmare," when there is no basis for this in the story. The earlier Mrs. Pollifax would roll with the punches and reserve "nightmare" for full fledged torture. These later books are so disappointing because the first nine are so wonderful....
A disappointment.......2003-09-02
I just finished listening to Mrs. Pollifax and the Second Thief on audio, and I must say, I was disappointed. I had to force myself to listen to it all the way through. This is definitely the worst Mrs. P, book I've listened to.. Why? Too many irritating minor characters. Not enough suspense, and, unbelievably stupid villains. Usually I can expect a TAD more realism than this from a Gillman book, but, this book was just plain silly and tried too hard to be cute.
Yes, it starts out okay, with Mrs. P, getting involved in the rescue of an old friend, Farrell, who owns an art gallery. We are led to believe that Farrell is some sort of super-agent, and super handsome, but instead he's just super annoying. Mrs. P, teams up with a spunky blonde agent, soon find themselves embroiled in a mystery surrounding an ancient roman scroll, art theft, and murder. Can Mrs. P and her gang of friends save the day?
By the end of this novel, I just didn't care. Farrell, was the world's most irritating character. All he does is whine and complain. The spunky blonde agent who was Mrs. P's sidekick would never pass any Intelligence Agency's background check with a family like hers... And Aristotle? This villain was silly, *choke* get real.
Overall, I'd give this one a pass. I've listened to much better Gillman books, and this one was beyond disappointing.
Mrs. Pollifax in Sicily.......2003-05-07
Mrs. Pollifax, intrepid Garden Club member and holder of a brown belt in karate, has gone on several assignments to exotic places for the CIA. In this book, she is called by old friend John Farrell to help him in his latest predicament. He is a former CIA agent who is now an art dealer and he has been asked to authenticate the signature of Julius Caesar on a document. In the process of doing so, he has been chased and shot at and he is currently in hiding. Mrs. Pollifax shows up with a young woman named Kate who has been assigned to help her. When they have trouble finding a safe haven, Kate takes them to her aunt's house. Mrs. Pollifax finds all sorts of interesting activities going on there and learns more about the people who are chasing Farrell. This story has the amusing complication of having Carstairs assign a person to follow and protect Mrs. Pollifax. She is not aware of this and she levels the poor man with a well-placed karate chop. Mrs. Pollifax fans will not be disappointed in this entry in the series.
I loved this book!.......2002-05-07
Of course, I love all of Mrs. Pollifax's adventures! I want to be her when I grow up;) But this one had wonderful, colorful (to say the least) characters, plot twists, and bits of Sicilian culture that made for a overall very enjoyable read.
Recent books disappointing.......2001-04-25
The first 4 or 5 books in the Pollifax series are wonderful. This is the worst of those that follow. I think the problem that I am having is that Mrs. Pollifax no longer seems to be the author of her own success. Lucky chance may be the reason she wins through in the end, or some individual she meets up with does it all for her. And I don't care for these partnerships, especially with Farrell. The wonderful thing in the past was how Mrs. Pollifax would come to a case with lovely excitement and by being herself assemble a group of unusual people around her and inspire them to great things. The recent Pollifaxes have seem tired and dependent.
