Book Description
Most of us spend more time in our homes than any other place. For better or worse, this highly personal space has a powerful influence over the way we feel about our lives. Based on the program used by the authors in their successful home consulting practice, this book teaches readers to use psychological and design principles to transform their houses into nurturing and supportive living.
The exercises in the book encourage readers to list the activities they engage in, room by room, in their homes. Readers learn how to analyze each room's size, layout, and decor and how to read their psychological and physiological reactions to the various spaces. Then the book offers readers a step-by-step process they can use to figure out what they and their living companions-family members, roommates, and even pets-want out of each room. Based on these discoveries, the book proposes cleaning, organizing, and decorating ideas guaranteed to make each room function better.
"This book unlocks the door on home design, giving you keys to creating a home that lifts your spirits and agrees with your lifestyle." -Candice Olson, one of North America's top designers and host of Divine Design on HGTV

Just for customer information:.......2007-03-08
A reviewer expressed disappointment in this book's lack of new content, and commented that the author had discussed something about creating an "altar." The altar reference did actually belong to another book (see page 79) called Creating a Charmed Life by Victoria Moran. The Emotional House is a very different book in idea and style. Hope this helped clarify.
Worthwhile.......2006-07-28
This is a special book. It is a wonderful guide to the emotional quality we create in our homes. It is practical yet transforming. Highly recommended!
A LIGHT BULB MOMENT BOOK.......2005-09-18
The Emotional House is no ordinary design book. Doing the exercises inside will set off a series of light bulb moments for anyone who tries them. This book offers amazing action plans and goal-setting exercises that go way beyond designing. There are plenty of good design techniques too (I really enjoyed the colour therapy and personal style exercises) but it was learning about the emotional functions of rooms that was the real eye-opener. I finally understood some of the issues in my home and fixed them.
Some other reviewer mentioned something or other about altars instead of focal points(?). I don't remember anything like that and I read this book cover to cover. Focal points were discussed throughout as a way to anchor the emotional function of the room (according to Amazon's Search Inside This Book option, focal points appear on 15 different pages). Perhaps that reviewer mixed this book up with another? From my perspective, The Emotional House is well worth the read.
I'd sum it up as: the road to a great life starts in the home, so fix your place up!
The Emperor's New Age Clothes.......2005-08-24
Based on the other reviews, I was eager to read this book. What a disappointment! The decorating advice is the same as every other book: declutter, have comfortable chairs with reading lights, hang some art, put kitchen things where you use them, design your home for you, not based on decorating magazines. What differentiates this book is that the standard material is wrapped in New Age 'spiritual' veils and tassles, so a room now has an "altar" instead of a "focal point." This lingo might have some value in knocking people into thinking about what they truly want in a home, but if you already have a comfortable home, you won't learn anything new here.
I really enjoyed this book..........2005-08-19
After reading and looking through many different style books and interior design advice books, I found that I was confused about how to pull different ideas, doodads and furniture I already have together. Ms. Robyn has a gentle and clear writing style and a way of helping the reader to assess HOW enjoyable one's house is and WHY a room is, or isn't, working. A brief example... do you have a formal style but live casually? There is going to be a clash that will create tension. This book is structured aroound some very basic rules, that will help any style you choose to work well.

Change is Only the End of the Road If You Fail to Make the Turn..........2006-09-20
Being an enthusiastic fan of Gerri Hill, I started reading `Dawn of Change' the afternoon it arrived in my mailbox. Hill delivers a quality story that competes with the best authors in the genre and certainly didn't disappoint this reader.
On the surface, the story is reminiscent of something from Jackie Calhoun. The protagonists are an attractive married woman (Susan) -- who is currently going through a divorce - and an irresistible lesbian (Shawn). Of course Susan leaves her husband for Shawn, but this wouldn't be a lesbian romance otherwise. This is all true on the surface. However, Hill incorporates Susan's worst nightmare --her family-- into the mix.
There is Ruth, Susan's older sister, who appears very prudish and shallow at first blush. But there is actually much more to Ruth and this reader felt sorry for her by the end. Susan's mother pokes her nose in as well, but she's less intrusive than Ruth. Then there is Susan's supportive daughter who reveals something new about herself as well. Contrast that with Shawn's dysfunctional, non-existent family and her rocky past. Shawn has secrets of her own that she feels compelled to share with Susan.
As the two women alternately console each other through emotional times, their budding friendship becomes much more complicated. It is this emotional journey that truly keeps the reader engaged and makes this book a must read. Highly recommended as a permanent addition to your personal collection.
Family.......2006-07-29
What happens when you catch your husband in bed with a 20 something bimbo?
That's right, you take a break from life. But did you expect to fall in love with a woman. Did you expect your immediate family and friends to push you back with your husband.
The woman of your dreams...is just that!
WOW.......2006-06-09
This is the 1st book I have read by Gerri Hill and I sat down down with it and read it straight through. Then I read it again. Now I am rereading the parts that I really like :-)
I absolutely love when an author can grab your attention and leave you wanting. The writing and characters are phenomenal!!!!
Thank you.
Strong Entry in Hill's List.......2006-04-17
Susan has walked out of her marriage after catching her husband in their bed with a 20-something woman. She escapes to the couple's cabin in the King's Canyon National Park. One day, while walking one of the trails, a dog bounds across the river to shake muddy cold water all over her. The dog's owner, Shawn, apologizes, and that seems to be the end of their encounter. But you have to know that with a Gerri Hill book, that is only the beginning.
In this outing, Hill takes a very married, but basically unhappy, woman and shows how she deals with the end of a 20-year marriage, with her family, and with new friends. There are many sub-plots in this book, but the one you love to hate is the sub-plot involving Susan's sister and mother who are insistent that she return to her husband and their life in society. The sub-plot you love to love is Susan's daughter's coming out.
This is one of Hill's stronger outings. She doesn't rush Susan's angst over ending her marriage nor does she rush the obvious attraction Susan begins to feel toward Shawn. Once again, Hill develops characters that you'd like to know better.
Loved It!!.......2006-03-21
This book was a very nice read not a lot of action but the story line and characters were great. Next to Hunters Way this was my favorit Gerri Hill book.

A young man's struggle to be true to himself and his faith........1999-09-27
I found this book to be humorous, touching, and insightful as it introduces the reader to a wealth of colorful personalities in the small Montana town that Tyler Hochreiter calls home. The cultural realities that existed in the 1940's, and the very real dilemma's of choosing one's own road in life are artfully presented in a way that held my imagination with vivid imagery and touching familiarity. I enjoyed this book very much.
Book Description
A positive look at change and how it can help us achieve stability, serenity, and strength.
Book Description
The accident is a new form of warfare. It is replacing revolution and war. Sarajevo triggered the First World War. New York is what Sarajevo was. September 11th opened Pandora's box. The first war of globalization will be the global accident, the total accident, including the accident of science. And it is on the way.
In 1968, Virilio abandoned his work in oblique architecture, believing that time had replaced space as the most important point of reflection because of the dominance of speed.
We were basically on the verge of converting space time into space speed... Speed facilitates the decoding of the human genome, and the possibility of another humanity: a humanity which is no longer extra-territorial, but extra-human.
Crespuscular Dawn expands Virilio's vision of the implosion of physical time and space, onto the micro-level of bioengineering and biotechnology. In this cat-and-mouse dialogue between Sylvere Lotringer and Paul Virilio, Lotringer pushes Virilio to uncover the historical foundations of his biotech theories. Citing various medical experiments conducted during World War II, Lotringer asks whether biotechnology isn't the heir to eugenics and the "science for racial improvement" that the Nazis enthusiastically embraced. Will the endocolonizataion of the body come to replace the colonization of one's own population by the military?
Both biographical and thematic, the book explores the development of Virilio's investigation of space (architecture, urbanism) and time (speed and simultanaeity) that would ultimately lay the foundation for his theories on biotechnology and his startling declaration that after the colonization of space begins the colonization of the body.

The bobcat smiled. "Agreed," he said.
The rabbit looked at the cat long and hard.
The bobcat dropped his head a little. He did not like to be sized up by what he would usually eat up.
"Very well," said the rabbit. "I choose to believe you."
Can a rabbit outwit a bobcat? Does a turtle who is a hundred years old have a secret worth hearing? And who will dare to match riddles with the king of lions? The five fables in Pocket Change tell of alligators and monkeys and cheetahs--and many other animals--that do and say remarkable things.

The Review.......2005-01-06
Stunning. Poetic. Mr. Bernard did not merely "scratch the surface" but more like savagely clawed the surface (smile).
This book exposes or has the reader examine the whys and whats of what we, as humans, do, in all aspects concerning the way we live our lives.
There were times when it got to be to much as I was like "I'm going to read something else as this is too deep even for me," but by saying that it made me want to read more as I became addicted to this book. This book similar and different than when I read "The Darkest Child" was intoxicating.
This book, the characters, all became real and I recognized that this was fiction, but Mr. Bernard wrote this in such a fashion that made it real.
If you want a book that is and will take you on a trip that delves into the human psyche then I stronly recommend "The Last Dream Before Dawn" as it will truly rock YOUR world and have you examine yourself and others more closely.
Thought Provoking!.......2004-12-28
It took me awhile to get into this book but it was worth it in the end. Serious book about a very serious issue. Good read and a very deep story.
The Awakening.......2004-03-15
D.V. Bernard presents a fresh viewpoint of the rising violence and scandal in America in his debut novel, THE LAST DREAM BEFORE DAWN. Twenty years ago, Roland Micheaux's innocence was shattered when his father was executed for heinous crimes. Now, as a successful New York attorney, Roland finds himself face to face with the very thing that he has tried to put behind him. One night in a parking garage his father's persona comes to haunt him as Roland makes a calamitous move that will send his life into a tailspin and cause him to question reality. Roland then meets Jasper Kain, a seer of sorts, who tries to convince him that the world is coming to an end and that madness will take its reign on the city. Kain's prophecies defy rationale, but Roland soon sees that these ideas should not be so easily dismissed.
THE LAST DREAM BEFORE DAWN is a flurry of characters, scenes, and plots, but somehow, Bernard coheres it all together into cerebral fiction that challenges reality and sanity. A distinguished entrance into the literary arena, this novel is splendidly written and brilliantly executed.

Madness.......2003-09-19
Roland Micheaux is no stranger to violence and holds a secret that he hopes will never be discovered. He is sitting on top of the world working as a successful attorney with a top law firm in New York City. Then one day he commits an unspeakable act and his world is turned upside down; and he is left pondering the question of who and what he has become. Leading him down this path of self-discovery is the unusual and elusive Jasper Kain.
Jasper Kain is a mysterious man who seems to just appear out of no where and feeds on evil and chaos. He is one of the most important characters in this book because he seems to hold some influence over all of the major characters.
Alexander Randolph is a Black Republican and Mayor of New York City. In his mind, he is one of the most important men in the world. Even though he has all of these things going for him, Mayor Randolph is not immune to madness.
The paths of these three men cross continuously throughout the book as each of them is touched by the madness and evil of the world. In reading this book, just when you think things can't get any worse they do. THE LAST DREAM BEFORE DAWN is an unusual book.

A new genre.......2003-09-04
This book was a great departure, from what I normally read, which is black fiction, based around romantic relationships. These books are more commonly known as "sistagurl" books. This book was written intelligently, and dealt with issues that we can all relate to in society. This book was a page turner, filled with mayhem, suspense, love, hate, violence, peace, and introspection. This novel makes the reader feel as though they are a part of the story, and I hope it will go on to be a best seller.
Book Description
A breathtaking ride through the highs and lows of one spectacular, pivotal year in American history.
As the earth turned toward the sun on the first morning of 1908, human flight remained, for most Americans, in the realm of myth and dream. But before the darkness fell on New Year's Eve at the end of the year, the Wright brothers would be worldwide celebrities, heralded as the first people in all of human history to conquer the sky.
It was the year Teddy Roosevelt sent the Great White Fleet on a voyage around the globe, Robert Peary began his courageous dash to the North Pole, six automobiles left Times Square on an epic twenty-thousand-mile race to Paris, and Henry Ford introduced an oddly shaped new automobile called the Model T.
It was a time of seemingly boundless innovation - everything was bigger, better, fast, and greater than ever before. In New York and Chicago, banks of high-speed elevators zipped through vertical shafts in the tallest buildings on earth. Pneumatic tubes whisked mail between far-flung post offices in minutes. Women cleaned their homes with amazing new devices called vacuums. And as American engineers cut a fifty-mile canal through the Isthmus of Panama, the very air buzzed with the imagined potential of new technology, including a "portable wireless telephone" that would someday allow people to talk while they walked.
Meanwhile, the New York Giants battled the Chicago Cubs in one of the most thrilling seasons in baseball history, and a reluctant William Howard Taft was elected twenty-seventh president of the United States.
By turns gripping and humorous, shocking and delightful, Jim Rasenberger's America, 1908 brings to life our nation as it was one hundred years ago, at a moment of delirious optimism and pride, a time when Americans believed that even the most intractable problems would soon be solved and that the future was bound to be better than the past.
"What will the year 2008 bring us?" pondered the New York World on New Year's Day of 1908. "What marvels of development await the youth of tomorrow?" As Thomas Edison said later that year, "Anything, everything, is possible."
Shedding new light on stories we thought we knew and telling fresh stories we can't believe we've never heard, American, 1908 is a rousing chronicle of a country on the brink of greatness - and a timely, thought-provoking glimpse at a younger America, even as we wonder what awaits us in the century ahead.

A very enlightening read.......2003-02-05
The book explains how to analyse your own (and others) handwriting and how to draw conclusions from the characteristics noted. If your handwriting reveals traits of your personality that you think could be improved or corrected, the book continues to explain how you can achieve this by adjusting your handwriting.
It's not easy but the results are rewarding.
Book Description
Martha's Vineyard is home to ex-Boston cop J.W. Jackson, his adored wife Zee, their toddler Joshua, and newborn daughter Diana. For others, the picturesque vacation spot is a relaxing escape from a world filled with trouble. But there is no escap for Julia Crandel and Ivy Holiday, two Hollywood actresses staying in the Vineyard town of Oak Bluffs. Their arrival has incurred the wrath of a pair of local gangsters, and a deadly stalker from out of the young ladies' past has found out where they are hiding. Twin hurricanes are about to slam the idyllic island -- one a natural climatic disaster, the other an all-too-human catastrophe -- and it looks as if J.W. is going to get caught in the middle. And since his conscience won't allow him to abandon two frightened, helpless visitors to the fury of the coming storm, he stows away his fishing gear, sends his loved ones off-island ... and dives headfirst into the tempest.

different.......2007-07-04
If you have read other Vineyard books from Philip Craig, then you will note the tone of this one is edgier. I didn't particularly like the extremely dangerous nature of the Vegas brothers running around the island causing mafia like terror in paradise. You may also note early in the story that one of the two Hollywood actresses doesn't seem to be nearly as concerned about a stalker and the danger surrounding her as the other actress, which is curious. I would say this is a fine book, but I bumped it down to 3 stars mainly because it wasn't quite the Philip Craig style I have grown to love.
Go away Zee.......2007-04-01
I fell in love with J.W. and his Vineyard several books ago. Recently, though, I've found Craig's stories weak to the point of boring.
With the wife came responsibility and predictability. J.W. has changed, and he just doesn't offer the excitement he used to. Now that he has two children, the sleuth is just another dad, lugging car seats and buying ice cream. It's interesting, almost funny, how precocious Craig makes these little darlings, shaking hands and exhibiting perfect manners, even to the bad guys. I couldn't help but think, every time these kids refer to their parents as "Ma" and "Pa", that I was back to "Little House on the Prairie". Maybe that's a better title..."Little House on the Vineyard."
Please, Mr. Craig, get rid of this sugar-sweet family. They could all fall off the boat and drown. They could be kidnaped by terrorists and never returned. Anything. Just bring back the old J.W. and his adventures - minus the missus and the diaper bag.
An Old Friend Revisited.......2007-03-10
This is the first published novel I've read by this author and it was like getting acquainted with an old friend both literally and figuratively. I was a collegue of Mr. Craig's many years ago when we both taught at a college in Boston. We became friends and I was privileged to read an unpublished manuscript he had of a novel set in the Southwest prior to the contact of Europeans in that area. It was skilfully written, excitingly plotted and full of fascinating fact and fantasy.
During that time Phil invited me down to his summer place at Martha's Vineyard and he and his lovely wife Shirley were gracious informal hosts and showed us around the island.
I'd lost track of Phil until a year or so ago when I found out he had published all these murder mysteries set on the Vineyard, so I ordered a couple.
I chose to read Vineyard Blues first because I am musician and in fact Phil and I have been know to pound the odd chord, and raise our voices and a glass or two in merry or melacholy lament. It was such a treat to revisit the Vineyard through Phil's clear descriptive prose, and I did enjoy the story and the character's.
Before I started writing this review I read a dozen or so other reviews posted on one of the big bookseller websites and was interested to see the comments of readers who have been fans of JW Jackson and are not happy with the addition of a budding little "perfect" family.
Well I haven't read the earlier books yet but I probably will. I guess Phil should be flattered to have created a character that people care about. I read a lot of popular fiction and a lot of "Murder Mysteries", I'm not a particular aficiando of the genre I just like stuff that is easy to read but engaging. This book certainly fills the bill or should I say, "Phil's the bill."
I'm halfway through "A Fatal Vineyard Season" and enjoying it just as much.
A well developed plot.......2001-01-17
This novel is a good mystery with some unexpected twists at the end. An actress shows up on Martha's Vineyard with a friend from the island, saying she wants refuge from a stalker in California. It is out of the frying pan and into the fire when she attracts the attention of a local psychopathic hoodlum. J. W. Jackson becomes more involved than he intended when he takes on the task of carrying out an investigation. His own life is endangered when he, in turn, draws the hoodlum's attention. Saying more would give away the plot.
This book, like some of the author's other books, has recipes in an appendix. It also has the usual map of Martha's Vineyard for readers unfamiliar with the island, and some side accounts of fishing.
