Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Female Rider's P.O.V........2006-04-01

As a new rider, I appreciated reading other's reasons for riding. The book is not meant to be a literary classic, but a reflection on the diversity of people who ride motorcycles. I'm genuinely interested in other riders' stories.

Also, as a photographer, I really appreciate it's documentary-style photos.

I have the book displayed (open)on my shelves as art.

1 out of 5 stars Bikers Shmikers.......2004-12-18

This is the kind of book that makes my blood boil.

1. If bikers are so intent on expressing their individuality, why do they ride around in a herd at thity miles-per-hour wearing identical "baaad" outfits?

2. Loud pipes don't save lives, they create even more anti-motorcycling sentiment with the general public. Loud pipes will LOSE bikers' rights.

3. Nam is over, dudes. Have a little self-respect and stop peddling your trauma. Grow up.

4. What the hell is that typeface all about? Oh, I remember... individuality, again. Right.

I'm a motorcyclist. Not a biker. I ride alone, and I like it; I like the skill, the grace and the challenge. I'm well aware that I could be killed or maimed at any given time while riding. But that doesn't qualify me to write this kind of pseudo-philosophical claptrap.

Save your money. Buy a copy of... ANYTHING else.

1 out of 5 stars A "biker" comments.......2004-09-11

After reading this book, and the reviews found here, I can't help but believe that all the positive reviews come from:

1. Rich Urban Harley Riders
2. Friends of the author
3. Both

This is pretty light weight stuff that has very little to do with riding a motorcycle. But then again...there aren't a lot of motorcyclists. There are a lot of people who own motorcycles. Before you order it from Amazon.com pick the book up at your local bookstore. Glance through it. Maybe you'll like it. Maybe you think $25,000 is a reasonable price for a Harley.

2 out of 5 stars Expensive .......2007-08-03

Same two techniques used repeatedly in the same way throughout the book: Right-angle weave and "Coraling Technique" (actually branch fringing), both can be easily found on internet. The 10 projects are all the same with some alterations (which are presented as "different" projects). In my opinion there was no need to publish a whole book (more accurately a 45 pages booklet with large pictures-good for visual learner- but for obvious reason to fill the pages) on just two techniques at such price.
I could give the book 3 star, but the price bothers me since you can find a lot of books with many different projects at the same price.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Jewelry.......2006-03-17

Varvara has done it again. Her books are clearly illustrated and the projects do not fail to be beautiful. The techniques are surprisingly easy and success is possible even on a first try basis. Most of the projects are made with 11 seed beads. The projects are beautiful, easy and very gratifying.

3 out of 5 stars Fancy Branch Fringe.......2005-12-17

The pieces in ths book are gorgeous and frothy, but not anything I'm likely to wear. Her 'Coraling Technique' is really just branch fringing taken to extremes; quite beautiful extremes.

It's a nice book (45 pages) to have in my beading library but I wish I'd spent my money on something more diverse.

4 out of 5 stars Coraling Technique: Step by Step Instructions for Making Ten ORiginal Design Necklaces, Bracelets & Earrings..........2005-09-15

An excellent guide for Coraling. I found the book interesting and helpful.

5 out of 5 stars BEST LITTLE BOOK.......2005-07-27

I have loved the coraling technique since I started with it a few months back. I was so excited to have found this book and couldn't wait to order it. In fact, I have now ordered her other books.

The book is beautiful with very clear instructions and wonderful ideas. Varvara is such a great artist.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great introduction to beading techniques.......2007-08-23

I bought this book as an intermediate beader after hearing many good words about it. And I do find it's a great book for beginners to learn new techniques from stringing to seed beading and wire crochet. Not a book for people looking for different projects, but exactly what it claims to be: an encyclopedia to use as reference for learing. A starting point for new beaders that I would recommend.

4 out of 5 stars Encyclopedia of Beading Techniques.......2007-01-13

I would think that this reference would be a great help for beginner or more experienced beader. I am a beginner and found answers to many questions. There are fantastic photos for direction as well as inspiration.

2 out of 5 stars Destined for the Bargain bin.......2006-10-02

I can understand why there are so many used books! The Binding Is Poor and will soon fall apart, Just turning the first few pages showed me that.. Very Nice Color BUT very brief instructions On lots of different Beading techiniques. The first part on Tools and Materials is well done. This book is an introduction ONLY. The wire work part does get you started but leaves you wanting more. It gives a few pages to each techinque leaving you wondering what happened to the rest?

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars I echo the above reviewer..........2002-04-09

This book explains knotting fairly well. But as a beginner beader, I found the rest of the instructions confusing and incomplete. I ended up going out and buying the Klutz book (you know, the ones usually found in the Children's section) to beading, which was able to explain things like attaching clasps and making wire loops and the like. It won't get you very far beyond the basics, but at least it gets that far.

2 out of 5 stars From a novice beader.......2000-02-21

I found this book a little skimpy for the price. As a novice, I found a lot of information that was useful but still didn't feel ready to start a project. The glossary of "standard terminology" was exactly 11 items, including the information that a bracelet is 7" long and goes on your wrist. In a book only 44 pages long, I think there is more important information to include.

I think you'd be better of surfing the web for instructions.

That said, there were some nice illustrations of the standard tools and clasps, etc. Overall, this book was useful but in no way complete.

3 out of 5 stars Bought for a First Attempt at Beading.......2000-02-11

As a novice, I found the knotting portion of the book clear enough, but there wasn't enough information on attaching clasps - I had to purchase a book by another author.

A great book but only if you own no others on bead or ribbon work. This is NOT new material. It's a compilation of projects from numerous other books by a variety of artists/authors. As a relatively new "beader", this book ranks among my favorite. Clear text and excellent photography provide clear guidance for numerous projects.
The best in my collection of "how-to" books and a great value.
Don't be fooled by my "title", as this also offers more complex beading ideas with step-by-step directions.

3 out of 5 stars pretty pictures, but not very useful.......1998-01-17

The full-color pictures of beads are very inspirational to us bead designers, but this book was short on good illustrations and details. Various knots and findings are mentioned, but never explained. Only the very basic, simple techniques are covered, and not in depth.

    SYNOPSIS
Start with fabulous border prints, add sheer overlay fabrics and dazzling machine embroidery, and top it all off with beautiful beadwork. You'll love the eye-popping effect this exciting process will bring to your work.

    4 out of 5 stars Inspirational.......2004-07-20

I love to cruise through the photographs in this book when I am looking for inspiration. It is filled with photos of beautiful embellishments mostly done on border prints. Dibbs shows step by step how to use decorative machine stitches and beads to create fabric with rich texure and sparkle. Most of the book is devoted to 10 projects which use the same technique which is quick and simple to learn and understand. The bright, bold photos really stir my creativity and make me dream of ways I can make a pretty print dress become a spectacular attention grabber, or convert a simple pair of tab top curtains to a focal point by adding a border print stripe and embellishing with rayon and metallic thread along with some well placed seed beads.

I would not use her technique on a quilt, though, as she has done in some of her projects. I think quilts should be snuggly. I think this technique is best in small patches because it packs quite a punch. It can be labor intensive, especially if using many beads, but like rich dessert, a little goes a long way.

2 out of 5 stars Magazine Article Sized Idea.......2002-02-27

This book continues the trend of little content being present in small (96 pages) books filled with full color photographs of the same idea over and over again.

Rather then being called "Machine Embroidery & More", the title should have been "Embellishing Border stripes with Machine Embroider and Hand Beading." Most of the projects consist of a Jinny Beyer Border Print that has been mitered around a plain center. Built-in decorative stitches are sewn over and beside the printed pattern on the border and then many tiny beads are hand sewn. The result is a lavish border in which the amount of labor invested can not be appreciated unless you are standing very close to it. Oddly enough these elaborate borders become the whole interest of the work, for they are placed around a plain and in some projects, very large, single center squares. The result looks like a very lovely, but empty picture frame.

The technique will only appeal to those who enjoy both machine and hand work. The projects for the most part, look incomplete, since the large center part of the quilt is empty. However, I could see the border treatment being use on a special quilt. I would have enjoyed seeing this technique in a single chapter or magazine article, but as an entire book, it is lacking.

    Not Recommended.

2 out of 5 stars Machine embroidery and more...........2002-02-22

This book has some interesting projects but I found them to be incredibly time consuming and lacking in function. A pillow or a quilt that is weighed down with stiff embroidery and beading is not exactly inviting to snuggle with. Don't get me wrong, these projects are original and interesting but I personally feel that if I am going to invest large amounts of time and energy into something, I want to be able to enjoy it afterwards.

      Book Description

Following the success of her first book, "A Quillwork Companion", Jean Heinbuch brings her sound, practical advice to the craft of beading with a series of step by step illustrated projects designed to teach the beginner and challenge the experienced. The book progresses from simple to complex projects, from barrettes to fully beaded belts, adding new concepts and skills each step of the way.

The reader learns not only beading skills, but design layout and leather or fabric construction techniques as well. Detailed and exciting beading designs are provided for each of the 11 projects, along with seven additional designs at the back of the book. The beautiful designs and project items are Native American in origin. They are naturals for those interested in Native American culture, but their appeal and uses are much broader and are limited only by the imagination of the crafter. Projects described include: Hair Ornaments - Large Barrette, Heart Shaped Barrette and Rosette Hair Ties; Beaded Bags - Ration Ticket Bag and Strike-A-Light Bag; Round Floral Belt Buckle; Knife Sheaths - Neck Knife Sheath, Large Old Style Knife Sheath and Wrap Around Knife Sheath; and Beaded Belts - Geometric Pattern Belt and Floral Pattern Belt. Beading techniques explained and used in these projects include the Return Stitch, Lazy Stitch and Gourd Stitch. Beaded edgings described are Oblique, Loop, Lazy Stitch and Gourd Stitch. Each step is fully explained with clear, easy to follow instructions. The entire book is fully illustrated (over 200 drawings!) and photos of each project are provided in color and black and white. Projects are made from leather or fabric and decorated with seed beads. The introductory section provides a fine explanation of materials, beading techniques and construction stitches. Everyone who enjoys creating and wearing beautiful craftwork will want a copy of this book!

205 illustrations; 13 B&W photographs; 4 pages in full color.
