original story at an inexpensive price.......2007-06-27
I loved the movie and wanted to read the book. It answered my questions.
Dreaming of the South Pacific..........2007-04-11
I admit I had very little idea what this book was about when I bought it, but it seemed like something I should read while on vacation in the South Pacific last fall. It wasn't quite the island paradise novel that I thought it would be - it really is a book about WWII, in which the islands of the South Pacific are characters, but despite not being what I thought I enjoyed it thoroughly and didn't put the book down until I was done. My reading experience was definitely enhanced by the view of the ocean that I had from my overwater hut in Bora Bora where I was when I read the book, but even if you aren't on vacation in some exotic locale, South Pacific is a classically entertaining novel well worth the read.
Truly a Literary Classic! .......2006-08-24
I read this book for the first time in 2006. It is a wonderful book, very valuable in learning about daily life for American soldiers during World War II. You also learn what the South Pacific Islands were like then. I have been a Peace Corps Volunteer in Thailand so I know what is like to have left a life behind in the United States and to live in another country. When you are signed up for a certain period of time, you always have to keep in mind that you are going back to the life you had before, but you are living a totally different kind of life now. People back home will never quite understand what you have experienced and many will not care. Most will only want to know a shallow version of that life. A person keeps most stories to themselves. I feel that Michener understood the life he wrote about in the South Pacific and was able to fictionalize many true stories. The book has insight, compassion and wit for it's protaganists. Just a wonderful book and I'm glad I read it.
An American classic.......2006-07-05
Fifty years or so ago I first read this book and have been coming back to it ever since. I am drawn in particular, to Michener's preface which I think is one of the most beautiful passages in modern literature. starting with the simple line "I wish I could tell you about the South Pacific" and ending with a paragraph that evokes the mood and rhythm of taps, the one that ends ".... they their battles will become distant and strange on the air, like Shiloh and Valley Forge.
Too much expected, too little delivered.......2006-05-07
James Michener wrote these stories just one year after WWII ended, in 1946. I believe that, for the time, they were very enlightening, enchanting, and, at times, even vividly frightening. But if one is to judge it by modern standards, Michener was anything but realistic about the grim realities of war and death. (I do think his last two stories, The Landing on Kuralei and A Cemetery at Hoga Point are very powerful writings, on any standard). Essentially, taken in the context of his time the book is a good one, but not a great one. Taken in today's world of realism, The Tales of the South Pacific is simply OK.

Book Description
The literary world was shocked when in 1889, at the height of his career, Robert Louis Stevenson announced his intention to settle permanently on the Pacific island of Samoa. His readers were equally shocked when he began to use the subject material offered by his new environment, not to promote a romance of empire, but to produce some of the most ironic and critical treatments of imperialism in nineteenth-century fiction. In these stories, as in his work generally, Stevenson shows himself to be a virtuoso of narrative styles: his Pacific fiction includes the domestic realism of `The Beach at Falese, the folktale plots of `The Bottle Imp' and `The Isle of Voices', and the modernist blending of naturalism and symbolism in The Ebb-Tide. But beyond their generic diversity the stories are linked by their concern with representing the multiracial society of which their author had become a member. In this collection - the first to bring together all his shorter Pacific fiction in one volume - Stevenson emerges as a witness both to the cross- cultural encounters of nineteenth-century imperialism and to the creation of the global culture which characterizes the post-colonial world.

OK for mixed Stevenson Island Literature.......2007-10-05
I agree with Mr. Coppedge. RLS's "island literature" is uneven, as a read of this book will reveal. For a real treat, read his "In the South Seas". Now that is a treasure.
Stevenson's retelling of Pacific island legends & stories.......2007-05-21
Towards the end of Robert Louis Stevenson's life in the late 1880's, he had to move to the Pacific islands for his health. He managed to visit many of the most famous locales while there, including Hawaii, Tahiti, Samoa, the Gilberts, the Marshalls, and many besides these. He listened to and recorded both native legends and sailors' stories, besides creating a few original stories of his own.
The book contains the following stories: The Beach of Falesa, The Bottle Imp, The Isle of Voices, The Ebb-Tide: A Trio and Quartette, and two very short stories. The book also contains a very lengthy literary overview and critique of Stevenson's work, which I would recommend skipping until after you've read the book. Thankfully, it also contains a map, which you will repeatedly refer to.
The Beach of Falesa is about a European trader (Wiltshire) who takes up residence in the fictitious island of Falesa, whereupon he is hoodwinked by a fellow European (Case) into buying a worthless business and marrying an untouchable girl. Wiltshire then determines to unseat Case from his position of dominance among the natives, so he (Wiltshire) can make good on his business and restore his wife Uma to respectibility. This story like the others that follow are true character studies of both human weakness and resolve.
The Bottle Imp is the story of a native Hawaiian who gets his genie in a bottle to grant him his wishes. But though his wishes are made true and he wins the heart of the girl of his dreams, he becomes both arrogant and cursed with leprosy. He is believed to be a devil by his neighbors. Forced into exile with a wife who believes that he doesn't love her, he desperately seeks out the genie once more to cure his illness. Then he can be with her again, but at the price of external damnation. Or is there still a way out?
The Isle of Voices is also a story about greed and lust. One young Hawaiian man (Keola) yearns for a native girl, but lacks the material wealth for a comfortable marriage. So his girlfriend's father magically takes him to the mysterious and frightful Isle of Voices where treasure lies at his feet simply waiting to be picked up. Not sated with slight and trivial wealth, Keola determines to treacherously seize a vast fortune despite being ominously forbidden by the father. However, Keola's plan is overturned, and he is doomed to learn the secret of the Isle of Voices.
The Ebb-Tide is about three washed up derelict sailors of varying criminal aptitudes who take up the job of delivering an abandoned cargo ship to Australia. However, the ship's European company have all died of smallpox, and everyone believes the ship to be cursed. So, Herrick, Davis, and Huish let sail - but to sell the cargo themselves and then take up as pirates. As the trio complete their dangerous moral and legal fall into piracy and murder, they come upon a queer island loaded with wealth. But will they survive what lies ahead?
Overall, I enjoyed the book, but I wasn't engrossed in it. Skip the introduction, or you won't continue reading the book. Go straight to the stories. All the stories are good, but the Ebb-Tide is probably the best.
Some enjoyable South Pacific yarns.......2006-01-03
I don't know why no one has reviewed this volume before. It is a good readable edition of several of Stevenson's South Sea stories, including the rarely encountered novel The Ebb Tide. The introduction is interesting enough, and the footnotes are very helpful for expressions in the Beach-la-Mar pidgin dialect and nautical terms. This is Stevenson's most mature fiction and is a far cry from Kidnapped and the Child's Garden of Verses.
Book Description
With its vast vistas, splendid sunsets, and rich history, the American Southwest has always inspired superb writing. Travelers’ Tales Southwest features a selection of some of the best. Tony Hillerman explores the wonders of Canyon de Chelly, while Douglas Preston takes the reader on a poignant journey into the land of the Hopi. Barbara Kingsolver learns how to live in harmony with the desert, and Barbara Beckwith joins the secret world of Native American pottery hunters. The book covers a wide physical and mythic terrain, with essays on director John Ford’s dramatic use of Monument Valley, and the Mad Monks’ bizarre excursion through “Planet Nevada.”

This is just a fabulous book. It will bring the Southwest to life for all discerning readers.

A British Columbo.......2006-08-19
I laugh out loud when I read a Frost novel, although sometimes the British words are hard to figure out. However, after 3 Frost novels they all seem to sound alike. He is entertaining though and a better night's entertainment than TV.
Huge plot flaws.......2005-11-01
This story had the potential to be a cozy English mystery, but the plot has flaws so big you could drop cannonballs through them. Just a couple: (1) The hero, Frost, was shot 2 1/2 years ago at the time his wife was given 6 months to live, but he's only been a widower for a year. (2) A woman eavesdropped on phone calls at a time when the caller, it turns out, had been dead for *two* years. All in all, I have a list of more than 10 plot flubs, including one that was mentioned earlier by another reviewer. Also, I have ethical issues with a "hero" who values a cop selling favors higher than a prostitute who's at least working for her money.
Mr. Wingfield, I have to ask, when a man has a briefcase chained to his wrist, just how many feet of chain do you think it takes? By the description it's more than four feet, which would be clanking against his ankles whenever he sits down--and depending on his height, possibly when he stands up, too. And why didn't a certain big bad fool just shoot the lock on the case?
Overcontrived and badly plotted. Ruth Rendell's Inspector Wexford is a far better read.
The best book I've read in a long time..........2003-03-29
I love the mysteries of Colin Dexter and Reginald Hill, so when a friend mentioned that the Frost series had a lot in common with them, I had to buy one. I was definitely not disappointed. Jack Frost is the most hilarious character I've ever come across. He usually says whatever pops into his head whether it's appropriate or not.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes British police procedurals. You won't be disppointed!
Great series opener.......2002-02-14
Terrific writing, interesting characters, witty dialogue. The ultimate plot solution is little strained, but I'd much rather compromise on the crime's "destination" than on the journey there. I vehemently disagree with the earlier reviewer who found Frost self-centered and disgusting. Self-deprecating would be much closer to the truth--a very sympathetic character.
Night Frost.......2000-05-24
I found this book gripping, exciting and humorous. Detective Jack Frost has his own inapt way of solving crime and will do anything to avoid paperwork and confrontations with the Divisional Commander. Some folk are not convinced Frost to be a suitable detective, but think again as he's not as foolish as some might believe. ! I just can't wait to begin the next novel by Wingfield which I am told are as good if not better than this one. - I recommend this to anyone, even if murder mystery is not your 'cup of tea'. ! 5 Stars.

Sometimes it made me sad.
It will make you smile too.
Turn off your TV and read this book!.......2002-04-15
I read an Animal Ark book called "Fox in the Frost" by Ben M. Baglio. There was a girl named Mandy. She was very nice and she had a lot of friends. But her best friend was James. One day, on school grounds, she saw two foxes being chased by a dog. She told a guy that she saw foxes, but the man yelled out, "Foxes, I hate foxes. Let's get them!" "No don't hurt them," Mandy shouted. But before you knew it, everyone was gone and school was over. Then another day, she and James were walking on a hill and suddenly they heard an owl and little footsteps. They peaked over the ridge and saw the foxes trying to catch an owl by dancing. Then, when the foxes struck, the owl flew away safely while Mandy and James went home. My favorite part in the book was when Mandy and James save the foxes from the bad guys. My favorite character was Mandy because she loved and saved the foxes. Even if they are not endangered, I still think they should have helped them. In conclusion, I would recommend this book to a friend because it was such a great book.

Christmas Trees, illustrated by distinguished artist Ted Rand, encapsulates the wisdom of a Vermont farmer and the beauty of his country.

Perfectly beautiful book for family sharing........1998-11-20
I could hardly believe my good fortune to find my favorite Robert Frost poem had been illustrated by my favorite illustrator! This is much better than another "kiddie book about reindeer" This is a book to read aloud and share with the extended family. What an introduction to real poetry for the younger ones! I would give it 10 stars if I could.
