Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars a bit predictable but worth the read.......2007-05-09

Jacob Barringer is one of the better male characters I've read. He's adventurous, confident, and loyal, but he's got a little problem with saying exactly what's on his mind, even if it's not the most appropriate thing at the time. I liked that...maybe because I can relate!
On the other hand, Helaina Beecham--the "young investigator" mentioned above--rubbed me entirely the wrong way. She causes all sorts of problems for the other main characters. An unbeliever on a mission to rid the world of evil, she has questionable strategies.
The author uses Helaina's and Jacob's differing opinions on justice and mercy to give a clear presentation of the Gospel, making this book a great gift for a lost friend. For a Christian, though, it was a bit "skimable" during those sections.
If you're looking for a learning experience in the early 1900's Alaskan frontier, you've come to the right place. Peterson paints a beautiful picture of the tundra and its people. America is debating whether to join World War I, and Alaska isn't even a state yet. It makes for a very fresh setting.
The end of the book is left wide open for the next in the series, and I plan on getting on that right away.
Although, I found it a little predictable, it's worth the read.

2 out of 5 stars Nothing special.......2007-01-17

I picked up this book, excited to find another christian romance series from an author I had never read before. About halfway into the book, I realized why. The writing in this book is probably something similar to the books I wrote when I was thirteen. The plot was rushed and pointless, the "christian" characters were fake and unrealistic, and the romance? I can't stand stories of unrequited love when suddenly a light bulb clicks - "Oh, she's so pretty and smart and wonderful. Why didn't I see it before? I must be in love!" THAT is the epitome of forced, and I'm not exaggerating one bit. I did finish reading the book, but at the expense of a wasted afternoon. The story idea had promise, but lacked a better writer. I now have another author I know to avoid.

4 out of 5 stars Alaska Adventure.......2006-09-01

This was an excellent second book in the series. My only complaint is that she left you dangling and the third book will not be out until this fall.

5 out of 5 stars I loved this book!.......2006-08-23

Okay, so before I get started on my review let me just say that I didn't realize before I picked this book up that it is a spinoff of the "Yukon Quest" series. So, if you want to get the backstory on the Leah and Jacob (two of the main characters), you should read the Yukon Quest series first. Now that I got that out of the way...

This was the first book I've read by Tracie Peterson, and it made me want to read more of her stuff. I have to agree with some who said the book was pretty predictable, but I read so much that most books are predictable to me, especially romances...I mean what romance book isn't predictable? Anyway, I loved that this story held a little bit of everything, romance, adeventure, betrayal, and even history. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the Alaskan wilderness and the dangers and struggles the characters went through while living there.

All in all, this book is fabulous, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes historical Christian fiction; however, if you're not into the whole historical fiction scene, don't buy this book because you probably won't like it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Alaskan Adventure...........2006-06-01

I really enjoyed "Summer". The story felt as real as the characters. Nothing was hurried as often is the case in books. You felt like you were there with Leah and Jacob. I am looking forward to book 2 due out in July.

One thing I will mention is that Tracie's Yukon Quest Series..."Treasures of the North", "Ashes and Ice" and "Rivers of Gold" are excellent as well and in these books we first meet Jacob and Leah when they were young. You also meet Karen and Adrik who are mentioned in "Summer". It's always great to get the history! It makes the story more complete. I read "Summer" first then went back and read the Yukon series.

    Book Description

In the far northern parts of the world, near and above the Arctic Circle, summer days are very long. In Barrow, Alaska, for example, the sun rises in May and sets 83 days later, in early August. During this time, the sun shines all through the night. People call it the midnight sun. When the midnight sun is shining, people and animals stay active even at night. This sweet poetic narrative, illustrated by award-winner Jeremiah Trammell, showcases the many pleasures of this unique time as a little girl dances, fishes, plays games, watches moose and fox, and communes with family and nature.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A picturebook about a young girl living in Alaska who looks forward to the longest day of the year - the solstice.......2005-09-12

Featuring a skillfully written text in the form of a kind of prose poetry by Deb Vanasse, which is perfectly framed by the full color artwork of Jeremiah Trammell, Under Alaska's Midnight Sun is a picturebook about a young girl living in Alaska who looks forward to the longest day of the year - the solstice. During this time the sun never sets on Alaska, people and animals are reluctant to sleep, and the midnight sun shines brightly. The playfully exuberant illustrations are the perfect complement to this read-aloud storybook that will introduce young readers to how different day and night can be at far northern latitudes.

    5 out of 5 stars Charmingly whimsical.......2005-07-03

This story brings me back to childhood and brings back forgotten memories of how fun it was to stay up late with my family as a child. In this story you follow a little girl and her little brother on a journey through a world of majestic sceneries and wildlife which is brought to life by Trammell's beautiful paintings.
I beleive that a succesful children's book needs to inspire a childs imagination and keep them interested and involved from cover to cover, this book does all of these and has my highest recomendation for children of all ages and adults alike.

3 out of 5 stars Rounding the Holidays.......2006-12-15

Three of these four [very] short stories relate to the holidays...

"Christmas Party" has (inveitably?) Wolfe in a holiday mood and role.

"Easter Parade" celebrates Wolfe's ongoing desire to stay home, no matter what.

"Fourth of July Picnic" recalls "Some Buries Caesar" a little bit.

"Murder is No Joke" is the only non-themed story here, and, in my view, it's the strongest for plot and characterization.

I hope we'll see these on audio CD or download some time soon...

                  5 out of 5 stars Nero Wolfe--A.C.E. Detective.......2002-07-20

Nero Wolfe is constantly getting himself into fixes through three character flaws. Arrogance, Cupidity, and Eccentricity. He must then shake off his indolence and use his intelligence to extricate himself from whatever predicament he stumbles into. Frequently he must extricate himself through the device of an elaborate caper designed to expose a killer while simultaneously burying his embarrassment.

Each of the four stories in this book has as its centerpiece an elaborate caper. In two of the stories Wolfe engineers a caper to extricate himself from danger; in the one the caper places him in danger; in the fourth, he is victimized by a caper and solves the mystery through sheer force of logic and deduction.

In "Christmas Party" Wolfe's fear that Archie is going to marry causes him to masquerade as Santa Claus and become prime suspect in a murder. In "Easter Parade" Wolfe's envy of a rival orchid grower causes him to stoop to petit theft and become embroiled in a murder mystery. In "Fourth of July Picnic" Wolfe discovers a murder at a picnic, attempts to flee without reporting it, and must expose the murderer before he himself gets arrested for obstructing justice. In "Murder is No Joke" Wolfe provides all the usual suspects with an ironclad alibi. How can he break an alibi that he himself provides?

Classic murder mysteries rarely bear any resemblance to reality. I've handled hundreds of homicide cases over the years, and the puzzles presented by real life homicide investigations bear no resemblance whatsoever to the puzzles presented in murder mysteries. You can imagine my pleasure on finding that Wolfe solved one of the mysteries in this book with exactly the same stratagem employed in a case that I prosecuted years ago. I've long since lost track of the investigator who solved that little mystery, but if I ever see him again, I'm certainly going to ask him if he has ever read any Nero Wolfe.

                  4 out of 5 stars 4 stars for 4 stories.......2002-07-18

Spend the holidays with Nero and Archie, and quickly discover Wolfe quick thinking as he solves the mysteries faster than you can turn the pages. The last one is particularly good, as Wolfe takes offense to the fool who tries to fool him. In the others, Wolfe himself is cast in the spotlight as the police begin to even suspect his involvement - but naturally, his intellect always bails him out.

5 out of 5 stars Holiday spirit at the brownstone.......2002-01-19

This edition now boasts "As Seen on TV!" on its cover, alluding to the fact that 1 (so far) of the 4 short stories herein has been adapted by A&E. Since 3 of the 4 are set during major holidays, Jane Haddam (author of the Gregor Demarkian holiday mysteries) was selected to write the forward. Apart from her forward and the afterward, the book is pure Stout, set after both _Black Orchids_ and _The Black Mountain_.

All four are murder investigations. The Ingram editorial review incorrectly implies that the killings were committed by 1 person - they're not. The cases are unrelated, and are only grouped in one volume because of a common holiday theme.

"Christmas Party" - The A&E adaptation is faithful to the story. Archie, having arranged for a day off, receives brusque instructions to cancel his plans and drive Wolfe out to Mr. Hewitt's for a special orchid powwow. He whips out a marriage license (!), with the news that he must attend his fiancee's office Christmas party that day. You've _got_ to read this one, if only for Wolfe's reaction to this. :)

"Easter Parade" - Rumor (via his gardener) has it that Millard Bynoe has bred a pink Vanda, but he refuses to admit it or display it before his wife wears a blossom for the Easter parade. Wolfe, giving in to acute orchid envy, has Archie arrange for a petty thief to steal it under cover of parade photographers. Unfortunately, that's the day that someone poisons Mrs. Bynoe, apparently with a dart shot from a fake camera.

When originally published in a magazine, the photos referred to in the text were provided in color as clues. The old hardcover edition of the book provided them in B&W; this edition omits them altogether. It's a pity, but does not detract from the story.

"Fourth of July Picnic" - Wolfe never leaves the brownstone on business; his friend Marko Vukcic (and by extension, his restaurant, Rusterman's) is associated with most of the things that can get him out. He has agreed to give a speech at the annual picnic of the Restaurant Workers of America, if they'll stop harassing Fritz to join their union.

"Murder is No Joke" - A different version of this story appears in _Death Times Three_.

3 out of 5 stars Good all around information-but lacking.......2005-11-22

This book was helpful in describing all around driving techniques, and basically just alot of information for the extremely novice wheeler. Very slanted toward the Euro market, with all Euro names for vehicles, (Vauxhall for Isuzu, etc.) very different styles of vehicle modification, etc. Not an easy book to read cover to cover.

                        3 out of 5 stars But I don't have a Land Rover........2005-08-16

This information is generally good very much slanted toward European off-roading. If you have a Land Rover you will find information in this book to be right on target. If you are a US offroader the information will be a good read and if adapted to your particular vehicle will be useful.

5 out of 5 stars Planning an expedition?.......2001-12-21

Most Americans have the luxury of service stations at the trailhead and cell phones to call for help if we become stuck off road. For those who live in the west, where a cell phone signal is two hours away and a breakdown may be more than inconvenient, Jack Jackson's The Off-Road 4-Wheel Drive Book has good experience and insight to offer. The British point of view makes the book a bit quirky and centered on Rovers, but a refreshing perspective. You won't find the fat tire, bigger is better mentality here. Good information on self-reliant get there and back 4 wheeling is what this book is about. The preponderance of desert travel observations were particularly useful for the locale I explore. Get it and read it with Brad DeLongs 4-Wheel Freedom. You will not want for more information.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book by a veteran off-roader........1996-08-28

An excellent book, covering the off-roading scene in England, the rest of Europe, the Sahara Desert, and the Middle East.Jack Jackson gives the reader much useful advice on how to travel through very difficult country, and summarizes the 4x4 vehicles available in Europe. My own book "4-Wheel Freedom: The Art of Off-Road Driving" covers off-road recreation and all-weather driving in the USA. The serious off-road recreationist will want to add both these books to his or her library. Brad DeLong
