Book Description

In a battery of events that will make a hero out of an illiterate private, a young Richard Sharpe poses as the enemy to bring down a ruthless Indian dictator backed by fearsome French troops.

The year is 1799, and Richard Sharpe is just beginning his military career. An inexperienced young private in His Majesty's service, Sharpe becomes part of an expedition to India to push the ruthless Tippoo of Mysore from his throne and drive out his French allies. To penetrate the Tippoo's city and make contact with a Scottish spy being held prisoner there, Sharpe has to pose as a deserter. Success will make him a sergeant, but failure will turn him over to the Tippoo's brutal executioners -- or, worse -- his man-eating tigers. Picking his way through an exotic and alien world. Sharpe realizes that one slip will mean disaster. And when the furious British assault on the city finally begins, Sharpe must take up arms against his true comrades to preserve his false identity, risking death at their hands in order to avoid detection and thus to foil the Tippoo's well-set trap.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful, amid all the luxury and misery of colonial India.......2007-09-30

This first series installment introduces us to protagonist Richard Sharpe, an orphan from the gutter whose only shot in life is as a lowly private in the British Army, and whose only real skill is fighting. Sharpe does have related skills and virtues - honesty, wit, courage, initiative and resourcefulness among them - which is why the time spent with him in each book is so enjoyable.

Sharpe reports to the diabolical Sergeant Obadiah Hakeswill, who exists primarily to cheat and scheme money out of his subordinates, and secondarily to torment them for sheer enjoyment. Hakeswill lusts for Sharpe's girlfriend and wants to sell her to a brothel owner, and so trumps up a scheme to have him flogged to death.

But Sharpe is saved when he gets tapped to accompany an officer on a dangerous mission: finding a high-ranking British spy who has reconnoitered the defenses of Seringapatam. This is the stronghold of the fabulously wealthy Tippoo Sultan, the main obstacle to British rule of southern India.

Sharpe and Lt. Bill Lawford, good-hearted but naïve, find themselves swapping roles across class lines as they work their way towards the imprisoned Colonel McCandless, impersonating British deserters. Sharpe has more street smarts and finds himself in the unusual position of giving an officer orders.

All Cornwell's distinctive touches are found here - the luxury and misery of India, the fabulous wealth and huge harems of the powerful, the dreary lives of the British rank-and-file, and the exquisite tortures meted out by cruel rulers, who might have prisoners torn apart by sadistic musclemen or fearsome tigers. Cornwell pays meticulous attention to 19th century siege warfare.

In some ways he is even more compelling a character than Patrick O'Brian's Jack Aubrey: Aubrey, from gentry, has some natural allies, but Sharpe's natural state in life is alone, back to the wall, with no allies but the converts he makes as he serves side by side with them. Sharpe's ingenious but totally plausible improvisations allow him to, whatever the day is, seize it. The Sharpe books are delightful.

5 out of 5 stars A fine book and fun reading..........2007-09-26

I really liked this book as Cornwell seems to present blunt and realistic descriptions of life of the average enlisted man. A really good read. Take this book to the airport and you wont worry how delayed your flight is.

1 out of 5 stars Cornwells betrayal.......2007-07-28

I read all of the original Sharpe series in the eighties and thought that the series had come to it's natural conclusion with Sharpes Waterloo in 1990. I was very suprised to see Sharpes Devil a couple of years later and to my mind this was a book too far in the series. Cornwell was always writing other books at the same time including the excellent Redcoat aas well as the nautical thrillers. When he started the Starbuck chronicles I was delighted and followed Nates adventures in the same manner as I had Sharpe's. Then, after the Sharpe series had been shown on tv Cornwell abandoned "The Starbuck Chronicles" mid-series (after four books)and resurected Sharpe. Not to sound too cynical but the only reason for this betrayal of fans who had bought the new books and were following Starbuck could only have been money...Cornwell betrayed and sacrificed the Starbuck fans for a newer and more lucrutive market...the new Sharpe fans worldwide who came to the books after the tv series. In order to continue to cash in along came all the new books each one inserted in a different period of Sharpe's career. If you have read the original series you won't recognise Sharpe's description in the new books..because it's Sean Bean!...Thanks Bernard, how's the yacht?

5 out of 5 stars Once you start this series you will not want it to end!.......2007-07-18

The character of Richard Sharpe was first introduced to readers in 1981 through the wonderful novel, Sharpe's Eagle. That excellent book recounts the exploits of Sharpe and his squad of "Chosen Men" during the Battle of Talavera in Spain 1809. In the years since, Cornwell has written more than 20 Sharpe novels to great acclaim. With Sharpe's Tiger he has created a worthy place to begin a wonderful journey with Sharpe. This book introduces us to Sharpe at the very beginning of his life in the British Army of the early 1800s. In this book Sharpe is not a brash lieutenant trying to prove that he belongs as a commoner among the aristocratic ranks of British officers. Here he is a simple private trying to survive a sometimes boring, sometimes deadly mission to expand and bring order to Britain's holdings in India while fighting powerful native forces. Unforgettable characters we will see in later books (The evil Obadiah Hakeswill; the honorable Hector McCandless; the naive but brave William Lawford; and of course, Arthur Wellesley, who will become Wellington) are introduced for the first time here as we learn how Sharpe became the man that captured an eagle at Talavera and rose from the ranks to become a famous British officer. Read this book if you like adventurous historical fiction with great characters and interesting settings. I guarantee you will want to read the whole series by the time you finish three chapters.

2 out of 5 stars Sharp's Tiger--a pussy cat.......2007-03-18

I was expecting the literary equivilant of Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin series, and was disappointed to learn that it was merely "good trash," O.K. for a vacation read, but just barely. My interest in reading the rest of them evaporated.

5 out of 5 stars This is a retitled release........2005-04-04

This is the audio version of _Death of Faith_ which came out in 1997.

Guido Brunetti, his family and colleagues, and of course, the city of Venice, take part in wonderful mysteries.

5 out of 5 stars Some deaths in Venice.......2005-02-05

An audio version of a title apparently not in print format, Quietly in Their Sleep caught my eye on the shelves of the public library. I always enjoy Leon's Commissario Guido Brunetti novels because she always tells a compelling story about good vs evil, morality vs venality, in the context of Brunetti's life as an incorruptible police officer and devoted husband and father. This particular story is relevant for its subplot involving child abuse by priests, a topic never far from our headlines here in the US. If you are a devout Christian or Catholic, I would advise you not to read this book, for it questions many aspects of Holy Mother Church as it functions today as well as in history. But it is not disrespectful, at least not IMO. Quietlly in Their Sleep is also relevant for its depiction of a functional ( as opposed to dysfunctional) and intact family headed by two working parents of two normal teens. Both Guido and wife Paola are highly intelligent, and while their marriage and their mutual sense of morality is strong, they quite frequently disagree with one another over the situations that cross their paths as parents and professionals. Quietly in Their Sleep is a mystery with a gripping plot, and its characters and settings are genuine and refreshing, anything but sterotypical. And it's fun to read about everyday life in exotic Venice too.
A final comment: I listen to a lot of audio books and often find the narrators irritating. But Anna Fields is one of the best.

4 out of 5 stars Clear, clever directions for a great hunt!.......2007-07-24

The author offers plenty of clever ways to conduct a scavenger/treasure hunt. My only caveat is that the hunts all seemed based on driving or walking through a town, with no suggestions for scaling it back to a yard or house, because he feels that numbers (house numbers, price of an item, speed limit sign) should serve as the items that are sought. Lots of warnings about not letting drunk guests drive, etc. Still one of the best books I've found on the subject.

I was completely disappointed in the book. I was so excited to get it in the mail. After I got it in the mail and read it I felt like I wasted my money!!! I really thought the book would focus mainly on the different types of treasure and scavanger hunts and give several examples and already planned hunts but there is very little. There was pointless information given throughout the entire book.

Now in an updated second edition, Gordon Burgett's Treasure And Scavenger Hunts: How To Plan, Create, And Give Them is a totally fun guidebook to the planning and hosting of entertaining treasure/scavenger hunts for parties. Fun with Scavenger Hunts is a book on planning, setting up and executing the best party you will ever host for adults or children. When my daughter wanted to throw a Halloween party at our house for her classmates, I had a better idea. I hosted a scavenger hunt for her class. The first year was a success. Every year the guest list grew. She is now going to start high school and her classmates want me to host a reunion hunt for them next year. I have encountered many questions on how to run one. Where do you start? How do you come up with the questions? This book will take you through the process. And it doesn't stop there. I have included car rallies and a new twist on humdrum bridal and baby showers. Your first clue is ....

I was very disappointed with this book. Considering the fact that there is so much FREE information on the internet about how to create scavenger and treasure hunts I assumed that buying a book would offer some additional and valuable infor ation that could not be found esewhere. I was wrong. Please do not waste your time or money on this book. It was very upsetting for me to see that this is the same info that could be part of a typed-up PTA hand-out at an elementary school. There are no ideas in this book that could not be found on various websites. actually, there ar eno ideas in this book that you could not figure out on your own. This book should NOT have been published.

Robert Ferrigno continues to surprise. In 2001's darkly mesmeric Flinch, he not only delivered his usual trove of offbeat bad guys, but finally created a protagonist who was equally arresting: Jimmy Gage, a trouble-seeking reporter for the tabloidish SLAP magazine. The sequel, Scavenger Hunt, takes Ferrigno one evolutionary step further, its tale of ambition and guilt in Southern California driven by dense, circuitous plotting, rather than the familiar emotional tension between a flawed male lead and some treacherously captivating femme fatale.

"I want you to write an article about me, about what I'm working on. I even have a title for you: 'The Most Dangerous Screenplay in Hollywood,'" says Garrett Walsh, an egotistical, Oscar-winning film director who, after spending seven years in the slammer for killing teenage actress-aspirant Heather Grimm, now tells Gage he was set up, possibly by the husband of an unnamed "good wife" with whom he'd been having an affair. Walsh plans to expose this neat frame in a movie script, and wants Gage to publicize his efforts before anyone can stop him. The reporter is dubious--until Walsh is found dead in a koi pond and his "dangerous screenplay" goes missing. Intent on learning whether the director was murdered, Gage will first have to identify the "good wife," swap body blows with an aging action star, resolve questions surrounding a too-helpful retired cop with a doughnut jones, and determine if Heather Grimm was really as innocent as she appeared. Although there are several throwaway scenes in Scavenger Hunt (including one in which Gage and his cop girlfriend try to nab a "lover's lane" rapist), they don't detract seriously from this often edgy, sometimes humorous yarn, composed in a style that's pleasantly less restrained than several of Ferrigno's earlier thrillers. --J. Kingston Pierce

                    Book Description

Philip Marlow and Lew Archer would recognize a kindred spirit in Jimmy Gage, reporter for SLAP magazine, troublemaker by trade and inclination, and the hero of Robert Ferrigno’s sinuous new crime novel. While taking part in a Hollywood scavenger hunt, Jimmy meets Garret Walsh, a bad-boy movie maker in the truest sense: He’s just been released from prison after serving seven years for the murder of a teenaged girl. But Walsh claims he was framed and is writing a screenplay to prove it. He wants Jimmy to help him peddle it, sight unseen.

The next time Jimmy sees the director, he’s floating face-down in a koi pond and “The Most Dangerous Screenplay in Hollywood” has disappeared. Is Walsh a casualty of bad habits or has somebody crossed him off a list? And is Jimmy next? Combining nerve-shredding suspense and heat-seeking satire, Scavenger Hunt is an addictive read.

4 out of 5 stars Another strong Gage book..........2004-06-29

Ferringon continues to make me a fan of his work. This novel is populated with fewer strange characters than "Flinch" and is a less personal story (I guess any story where you suspect your brother of being a serial keller is personal as in Flinch)...yet it works. The murder mysteries here take some great turns. Jimmy is far more settled in this book and seems happier. I was sad to see Jane Holt and Desmond relgated to smaller roles. Same with Rollo, although he was around. This was much more about the case and less about these wonderful characters. Still, the mystery is a dandy and Hollywood again is shown to be a place of murder and redemption.

                    5 out of 5 stars Loved it!.......2004-02-25

Robert Ferrigno's "Scavenger Hunt" is a subtle, darkly mesmerizing Hollywood tale of murder, ambition, frame-ups, set-ups, double-crosses and clever sleuthing.

After serving seven years, Oscar winning producer Garrett Walsh is determined to prove his innocence. His vehicle is what he terms, the "most dangerous screenplay in Hollywood." Walsh wants SLAP magazine's cynical, skeptical, irreverent, high profile reporter Jimmy Gage to publicize the screenplay, before someone attempts to silence him permanently.

Jimmy fails to buy in. But, when Walsh is found floating in his koi pond and the screenplay missing, Jimmy doubts it was the accidental death the police claim.

No one shares Jimmy's thesis except his nefarious pal Rollo. Together they work their way thru a colorful cast of quirky Hollywood types, and around the cops who consider the case closed.

The plot is superb: sophisticated, solid, circuitous and overflowing with scintillating dialogue.

Mr. Ferrigno withholds enough info to keep surprises coming and the pages turning. The pace never slackens, and the accelerating danger of the killer keeps the tenseness at a high pitch.

A delightful read. Hooray for Hollywood!

Looking for an Oscar on a scavanger hunt in L.A. cynical magazine writer Jimmy Gage comes to the door of Garrett Walsh, who had been a boy genius filmmaker. Walsh has just finished serving a prison sentence for killing a teenage girl. He has a new screenplay about a brilliant director framed for murder, what else, and once he finds out who Gage is, he asks for his help.

But before Gage can do anything for the director, Walsh is found floating in a carp pond, dead. The police say accident, Gage doesn't think so and he starts investigating.

Robert Ferrigno is one of my favorite writers. He writes with wit and style, painting unforgettable characters in wild, wooly, urban Southern California and this book is no exception. We get tough guys who aren't so tough, smart guys who aren't so smart, hustlers and a murderer. And we get one of Ferrigno's best.

I rarely get sucked into a book the way I did by this one. Congradulations Robert Ferrigno, this is an absulote page turner. Good character development with many twists and turns to the storyline. This book is exactly what a mystery should be, believable and hard core content.

Do yourself a favor. Pick up all of Ferrigno's books starting with The Horse Latitudes. I have to admit that I thought his best book was Horse Latitudes, until I read Scavenger Hunt. I found myself reading the last 50 pages in 10 page chunks because I didn't want it to end. My only complaint is the 12-18 months it takes for Ferrigno to write his next book. Well worth the wait.

This very short book explains in detail how to hold a large-scale (town, mall, park) scavenger hunt. There really isn't much here that is new or different. If you need visual organizers and lots of hand-holding to put a scavenger hunt together, this book will be a favorite, but if you're looking for creative ways to put a new twist on a old game, this won't do it. Pretty pricey for the 25+ pages. Try this book instead:Treasure and Scavenger Hunts: How to Plan, Create, and Give Them!
