Book Description
From award-winning author Tami Hoag comes a warm, moving story of two cultures in conflict and two hearts in love.
Matt Thorne had come to his sister's rural inn to recover from an injury far from the city and his fast-paced life as an emergency room physician. Drifting between sleep and waking, Matt didn't trust his eyes when he saw the young woman who sat at his bedside in her plain cotton dress and apron, her chestnut hair tucked demurely beneath a white bonnet, like a beautiful vision from the past century.
Sarah Troyer had been warned about the womanizing Dr. Throne, but nothing prepared her for the shiver of desire that shook her to her core when she gazed at him. Though her life was bound by the simple Amish way, Sarah had always longed for the world outside. Her job at the inn already branded her as a rebel in her community, and falling in love with a stranger would mean the loss of her family and the only life she knew. Yet something sparked within her with every touch of his hand, each glance from his dark eyes.
Sarah was willing to allow herself a brief, secret adventure in the arms of a forbidden man. But she hadn't counted on Matt's passionate love--a love that would not let go, a love that could cost them both everything they knew....

An oldie but a goodie,.......2006-05-17
I have read this book over and over and over so many times you wouldn't believe it, it is that good! I enjoy stories in this fun genre and Ms. Hoag is one of the reasons why. I just love her!
Please!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-01-08
I was really disappointed in this book. I read Cry Wolf, and I loved it so I ordered more of her books. But I think this one was a mistake. I should have went to the library instead of spending my money.
The story of Sarah and Matt was cute, but please it drug on and on. I couldn't wait to finish it. I actually skipped paragraphs to get to the end.
The only caracter that I really thought brought anything to the book was Sarah's brother Jacob. And also Mrs. Parker that stayed at the inn for a day.
I gave this book one star, but I wish I could have given it a half a star.
Don't waist your money on this one.
reader review.......2003-06-24
this is a story of Sarah who was a worker at an inn, out in the country, and she was amish. she was taking care of Matt, a doctor from the city and he had been beat up pretty badly. Sarah was told to take care of him while the keepers of the inn were out of bussiness. while Matt's sister-in-law was away, Sarah and Matt were instantly attracted to each other and were totaly in love. they shared some long nights together....When Matt's sister-in-law came back from her business trip she saw that Matt and Sarah were in love and took it apon herself to tell him of the Amish bond that said that she could not love or marrie a non-amish person. torn at heart, Matt returned home to the city and to the hospitl, the rest u will have to read and find out this was a really good book and i think that anyone up for a good romance should read it
Amish?.......2001-10-03
Sarah Troyer is an Amish women working in an inn. When her employer brings home her battered Doctor brother to recover, Sarah is instantly drawn to him, as he is to her. But their different backgrounds and beliefs may keep them apart, despite the love growing between them.
Think the movie "Witness" with a happy ending. Though the romance is unique, I couldn't help but think... Amish? Sometimes the hero tended to be very insensitive to the heroine, but all in all the writing is solid. I just had a hard time immersing myself in the plot.
It's a love story !.......2001-01-17
I have enjoyed all of Tami Hoag's murder/suspense novels. Sarah's Sin from 1992 was figured to be a romance novel from the title, and sure enough it was. While it didn't seem like Tami Hoag, or at least the one I had grown to look forward to, it was a sweet story about a cocky ER doctor from Minneapolis who had been wounded in a gun fight and ends up recuperating in a small town in Minnesota nearl an Armish settlement. A young Amish widow is working at the bread and breakfast run by the doctor's sister and is assigned the job of taking care of him as he recovers his strength. Of course the two of them are attracted to each other. Having grown up with the Armish of Central Illinois, I found Sarah's character believable and true to the Armish culture. The story is about Sarah's longing to leave her "plain" life and accept her love and move on to the world at large with all its opportunities and challenges. It's a fast read and a sweet story. The sex is a little idealistic, but it's good fuel for a night of fantasy. Stick it in your beach bag and enjoy.

A Wonderful Little Treasure ..........2003-08-03
This book is a wonderful little treasure! The author shares her own vulnerabilities with us, and does so touchingly and with humor. Then she points out the "little" sins that we probably very often over look, or hope aren't seen, again with compassion, humor and the Bible to help us deal with these issues. Vanity, shopping for that new skirt just to look better then someone else; broken promises, or failing to followup on what we said we would do; boredom, just "having" to fill in silences with "news" of a friend, etc. This book will make a marvelous Bible study and/or women's discussion topic. Of course, men have the same sins as we do, but this book is directed more towards women's stumbling blocks like "competitive shopping". I highly recommend this book. But don't make the mistake I made and think that just because it is small that it will be a quick read, it is loaded with things to make you stop and think. I spent a lot of time putting this book down to pray for forgiveness over things I had overlooked as sins, and spent much time in contemplation of myself and my actions before I picked the book back up to digest another chapter. I want to share this book with a lot of friends and family, but I will be giving them their own copies. I know I'll be going through this book a few more times to learn some more about myself.

Written especially for Christians.......2003-07-16
Little Sins, Big Problems by Sarah Onderdonk is a thoughtful and compelling examination of the internal obstacles to personal spiritual growth which we routinely encounter in everyday living. Written especially for Christians, Little Sins, Big Problems aptly discusses the negative effect of small yet taxing sins, ranging from unfair judgements, to materialism, to indolence, and then focuses on how to strive to be a better person in one's own and God's eyes. Little Sings, Big Problems is a welcome and thoroughly "reader friendly" contribution to individual and study group Christian Life reading lists.
Little Sins that are just as "deadly".......2003-05-09
I opened "Little Sins, Big Problems" when it arrived in the mail, and I didn't put the book down until I had finished the last page. Afterwards I sat another while and thought about the many ways the book, and its "little" wisdoms, apply to me and my life.
Sarah Onderdonk is a very approachable, friendly writer. I felt like we were sharing a cup of tea and she was simply sharing her knowledge with me in person! At the same time, her Biblical knowledge, scripture quotes, practical advice and "how to"s regarding little sins are well researched, and they really work! At the end of each chapter she reviews what's been shared and asks pointed questions so that you can apply the lessons learned to your own experience.
Ms. Onderdonk also shares personal vignettes from her own life that allow the reader to experience what she went through in the writing (and the life that led up to it!) of this book. I did not feel like I was reading a book that was TELLING me what to do or how to live -- Sarah shares her trials as well as her triumphs and does not talk "down" to the reader at all. Her humanity comes through in chapters dealing with her struggles with an eating disorder, her need for Christian counseling several years into her marriage, loss of family members, and relationships with all kinds of people that require tending. From the introduction about Sarah's run-in with a frisky pepper in the produce department, to her final words of encouragement and humility -- you will be hooked!
Buy this book. Read it! Come back and buy two or three more for your women friends. They will thank you for it!
Little Sins, Big Problems is a Big Hit.......2003-02-20
Sarah Onderdonk commends five starts on this book. Sometimes it truly is the " Little Things" in life that are so important. The importance is to recognize these things and you will have Big changes.I found it enjoyable connected reading, true to the point, and comical. Her story is one that anyone can connect with and find the changes they can make to better serve themself, others and oh of course: Our Lord, Jesus Christ.
I now know, if someone needs help, instead of saying " Let me know if there is anything I can do" It will be: What CAN I do to help you? See what changes YOU can do today!!

Book Description
America's Transcendentalists wanted to speak as gods, but few were so religiously exalted as Jones Very--nor did they want to be. Very lived the life of a mystic, speaking alternately as a nineteenth-century Jeremiah and the new American Messiah, for less than two years. During the period of his transfiguration, he wrote verse that was powerful and pure. It was not widely read, perhaps even suppressed, for while Jones Very's deep, if narrow, poetry fascinated his contemporaries, his life appalled them. His exaltation was his sin; the verse that grew out of his exaltation was angelic. To complicate the modern reader's response to Very's small corpus of magnificent verse is the larger body of mediocre poetry that he wrote after he "recovered" from his experience. As the millennium approaches, his ecstatic verse speaks more strongly than ever before. This book tells why.

at his best.......2007-08-26
this is, by far, my favorite collection of poetry from bukowski. it is worth the price alone for one of the poems (i forget the name of it right now) but one thing's for sure......... this will inspire you to write. in general bukowski style, it's crude, crass and beautiful.
Ain't that the truth~.......2007-03-09
Love really is a dog from hell. This writing is very real, very ugly, and very soothing to the sufferer.
The laughter of the mutilated who still need love.......2006-11-21
It's hard to think of a person less likely to
achieve posthumous fame than Charles Bukowski.
His poems don't scan or rhyme, they're imposs-
ible to memorize and the stories that they
tell repeat themselves like a whisky drinker
around 1:30 in the morning. In fact, you could
write a decent-sized essay on why nobody
should ever remember Bukowsky.
And yet. . .
There have been two movies based on his life
and work. His name hasn't exactly become an
adjective: 'Bukowskian' doesn't scan any
better than his poems, but he is certainly a
reference point in the literary imagination of
our time. If someone says "he's a Charles
Bukowski kind of guy" you get an image, bright
and clear like it came from cable TV.
So why? Why hasn't this guy been consigned to
the trash heap of misanthropic/misogynistic,
narcissistic drunks with no sense of rhythm?
Well, for staters, look at the title of this
review. There are enough people who see them-
selves as 'the mutilated who still need love'
to forgive any poet who came up with a line
like that.
Then there's this, from a poem about people
who call him asking for advice about a
literary career:
...they think I have held back my
secret.
I don't write out of
knowledge.
when the phone rings
I too would like to hear words
that might ease
some of this.
that's why my number's
listed.
Now that last poem, called 462-0614
is the one with the bookmark in my copy
of Love is a Dog. Little stuff like that,
small marks of compassion and vulnerability
that you have to dig for, that's a big
part of why we're still reading him today.
In a more general, story-telling sense he is,
like Billy Collins, the master of the double-
back and bite-you-on-the-butt technique of
spinning a very short tale and that's a very
addictive quality in a poet.
Of course, another reason that we're
reading Bukowsky today is that John
Martin out of Santa Rosa, CA sold his
collection of first editions and founded
Black Sparrow Press to publish guys like
this.
So, if you keep a few volumes of poetry
beside the bed, here's one to keep whenever
you need to be reminded that mutilation
leaves scars and that under the scars, the
mutilated need love too.
--Lynn Hoffman, author of THE NEW SHORT COURSE IN WINE and
the forthcoming novel bang BANG from Kunati Books.
Raw and accessible.......2006-07-08
There is no craft here, they say. The poetry flows from Bukowski's hand with such ease that it's akin to that thing they said about Kerouac: "it's just typing." And it's half true, both in Kerouac and Bukowski there's a beautiful measure of rawness and learnedness. Erudition? Bah! We want nothing to do with it, after Hank dispells the greats, and works through them like he does preteen mexican girls. Every poem is accessible, like a Pinsky or Collins, but it goes further because it pushes us to consider ourselves, more than a stroll through Central Park and a statue, but ourselves dirty and drunk with blood on our hands, f***ing that same statue.

Buk at his Best.......2006-04-21
This is my favorite book of poetry by Bukowski. It is an absolute masterpiece filled with excellent poem after excellent poem. Horses, Beer, and Women.
Customer Reviews:
My favorite book in the series.......2005-01-02
I loved this book & read it straight through. At a dog training symposium, the dog trainers are dropping like flies. Rachel & Dash work undercover in this whodunit. With lots of twists & turns, the story kept me guessing right up until the very end. Woven into the story is info about various training methods, plus entertaining grumblings from the various trainers. Having spent a good deal of time with people in the dog world, I enjoyed the personalities of the dog trainers and found that they shared many of the same aggravating traits of the dog-fanatics who I have met through the years.
Dog Mystery A Leader of the Pack.......1999-01-06
It's a dog's life in the mystery genre. The cats get starring roles, author co-credits, even whole series named after them. The doggie detectives are thrown the scraps. Enter Rachel Alexander, the private eye, who, with her faithful pit bull sidekick, Dashiell, is asked to provide security during a week-long dog training symposium at a posh New York City hotel in "A Hell of a Dog." A former dog trainer herself, Alexander knew the participants, each of whom believed that their philosophy, whether involving the use of prompt and frequent rewards, punishments or reading the pooch's psychic aura, will make them the next Barbara Wodehouse. Her job is complicated by the presence of a now ex-lover who decided to go back to his wife. "A Hell of a Dog" earns its best of show ribbon on several levels. The mystery is suitably mystifying, Alexander is an intelligent heroine with a heart, and the dog handlers are an entertaining pack of purebreeds and mutts. Watching them snapping and snarling at each other is only one of the book's pleasures. Benjamin writes knowledgeably about the dog world and the handlers' discussions and arguments about training are enlightening without being intrusive.
Customer Reviews:
I like the Star Risk books, but this one was the best.......2007-05-10
I hesitantly got into the Star Risk, Lrd. books. To my delight, however, this series is both interesting and funny. The Dog From Hell, however, is really the cream of the crop, primarily because of its storyline. I liek how the members of Star Risk are able to get the upper hand from Cerebus (primarily from making them assume they were all dead), and then coming back and getting excellent revenge on their enemies. Excellent book, and am eagerly awaiting the new book in July.
An unfulfilled promise of more..........2006-01-05
The Dog From Hell is another one of Chris Bunch's wild and crazy space operas featuring the crew of Star Risk, Ltd. The structure of this novel is different, feeling almost like three loosely connected novellas rather than a single, integrated novel - and that's not a criticism, just an observation. The novel starts with Star Risk, Ltd. taking a very different job for them, babysitting the troublesome daughters of some very rich people. After that matter is settled, the novel moves to a mid-section in which the evil directors of Cerebus, Inc. decide to take Star Risk, Ltd. to the cleaners. The final section is about the Star Risk, Ltd. crew engaging in some serious and painful payback. The ending suggests that the entertaining rogues of Star Risk, Ltd. have many more adventures ahead of them. Unfortunately, that isn't going to happen, because the author, Chris Bunch passed away in mid-2005. For those of us who enjoyed the rousing adventures arising from Bunch's fertile imagination, it is a sad good-bye. RIP, Chris Bunch. You were one heck of a storyteller.
Back on Track.......2005-11-25
After enjoying the first couple of Star Risk novels immensely, I was disappointed with the 3rd volume in the series. It seemed to plod on interminably without much in the way of interest. The fourth volume is back up to the previous standard.
The real antagonist, as always, is not the any of the political entities going around hiring mercenaries. They get fleeced as usual but the real adversary is Cerberus, Inc., the largest private contractor in the galaxy. Hundreds of employees vs. the 5 of Star Risk: the big guys better watch out.
The Star Risk crew don't have a direct employer in this one. Cerberus has forced them out of business and then tried to kill each of them in their "retirement". Now the crew is out for revenge and blood. They set up to sabotage a Cerberus operation that stands to be very profitable. As part of the price of doing business, they wind up helping some gypsy types that have moved into the system.
The characters are almost, but not completely, amoral. They want profit, fun and revenge. They try not to hurt innocent bystanders but nobody is going to get in the way of wiping out the real adversary.
Good Miliporn, but that's it.......2005-09-13
If you like miliporn science fiction then this book is for you. The characters are one-dimensional the plot straight forward and in four books the characters never developed at all.
Now, that's not saying this is a lousy book. It's not space opera, its too simple for that, but it is action packed and has enough macho-one linders to make for light fun reading. I enjoyed it, I enjoyed the whole series and if you've read my reviews before that means something.
This is not Sten, this isn't even Last Legion. It seemed that as Mr. Brunch drifted further on his own, his writing calcified instead of grown. He kept writing the same types of characters in the same types of situations with little or no imagination.
I use the past tense in describing his writing because Mr. Brunch passed away in July and this was his last book. Which is sad because it means that instead of being known as a co-author of Sten, his legacy will be of a hack.
A good read........2005-09-09
This is the fourth book in this series. It follows the others well, and I would recommend reading the previous novels first.
This doesnt mean this novel can't stand on its own, but it helps give the characters depth to have the history behind them.
As usual, once I picked it up I read it until hit the end.
