    Book Description

Manet, a founding father of modernism, is one of the towering figures of nineteenth-century art. In this absorbing book, Carol Armstrong looks closely at Manet's works to uncover a novel and compelling view not only of the artist but also of modernity itself. As she places his art within frameworks of color, the feminine Other (the "Manette" in "Manet"), and consumerism, Armstrong greatly expands and revises our understanding of this artist as a painter of modern life.

Surveying most of Manet's diverse output, the book addresses along the way his methods of self-presentation, his exhibition strategies, the relation of his etchings and paintings, the significance of his relationships with the model Victorine Meurent and the painter Berthe Morisot, the painterly construction of identity and gender difference, and much more. At the same time, the book considers contemporary writings by Baudelaire, Zola, the Goncourts, and others who dealt with issues relating to artistic identity and modernity, painting, the model, and femininity. Armstrong concludes that Manet's work demonstrates consistent preoccupations with defining and contradicting his own signature style of painting and with the gendering of costume, color, and the making of his art. These preoccupations, she shows, suggest a new understanding of Manet's oeuvre.

I bought and then returned this book. From the description I expected a guide with detail about the different schools and programs, as well as inside information on the schools. Instead, the book contains a couple pages about audition procedures (a much better description is in the Performing Arts Major's College Guide) accompanied by basic information that is easily available off of the school websites (location, number of students plus number of students majoring in the discipline, teacher/student ratios, etc.). It was impossible to tell which programs had a good reputation or better quality. Save your money, and get the information off of the school websites.

1 out of 5 stars Too Broad, Not Enough Information.......2004-04-23

I purchased this book to help me narrow my choices in regards to Graduate Schools for Architecture. As it turns out, less than 10% of the book is devoted to Architecture (the title led me to believe otherwise). Moreover, the information is simply contact information with some demographics, something that can be found for free on the internet. If you know what field you want to enter, find a book with that focus. This book was a big waste of money as one day after it arrived, I'm deciding if I should throw it away or give it to someone else (who will probably find it as useless as I do). For those interested in Architecture, "Guide to Architecture Schools, Seventh Edition" is the way to go. It costs twice as much as this book, but at least it provides useful, in-depth information!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book For Artists and Architects.......2004-01-28

If you are an artist or an architect, or desire to be, this book is indispensable. I am interested in Graduate Architecture programs, and certainly that is covered here, but many other things are covered as well. The book is very well organized and gives information relevant to graduate degrees from all accredited schools in the country in architecture, but also in other design and arts programs such as photography, dance, urban design, industrial design, interior design, medical illustration, etc.

The book itself is in an index format, with all schools in a given area listed alphabetically. For each program they list addresses, and contact information, faculty information and specializations, entrance requirements and accepted percentages, a list of all tuition and fees, financial aid available, and application information. Please note that this book is sometimes hard to get from Amazon. If Amazon is out of the book, or says they can't get it, you can go to www.petersons.com to buy it direct from the publisher. This is an excellent resource, and I highly recommend it.

I was delighted with the wealth of information based on real life experience. Ms Poisson does not merely throw out theory, she delivers proven techniques and usable ideas for the individual teaching or contemplating teaching drama on the high school level. After taking this book out of the public library and reading it, I knew that I would have to own it because it will be an invaluable resource throught my teaching career!

              Book Description

The phenomenal popularity of college athletics owes as much to media coverage of games as it does to drum-beating alumni and frantic undergraduates. Play-by-play broadcasts of big college games began in the 1920s via radio, a medium that left much to the listener's imagination and stoked interest in college football. After World War II, the rise of television brought with it network-NCAA deals that reeked of money and fostered bitter jealousies between have and have-not institutions. In Play-by-Play: Radio, Television, and Big-Time College Sport noted author and sports insider Ronald A. Smith examines the troubled relationship between higher education and the broadcasting industry, the effects of TV revenue on college athletics (notably football), and the odds of achieving meaningful reform.

Beginning with the early days of radio, Smith describes the first bowl game broadcasts, the media image of Notre Dame and coach Knute Rockne, and the threat broadcasting seemed to pose to college football attendance. He explores the beginnings of television, the growth of networks, the NCAA decision to control football telecasts, the place of advertising, the role of TV announcers, and the threat of NCAA "Robin Hoods" and the College Football Association to NCAA television control. Taking readers behind the scenes, he explains the culture of the college athletic department and reveals the many ways in which broadcasting dollars make friends in the right places. Play-by-Play is an eye-opening look at the political infighting invariably produced by the deadly combination of university administrators, athletic czars, and huge revenue.

Every state also has its own "home page," with useful facts for students, such as music programs within the state, the state capitol, and population figures. The book includes invaluable articles on financial aid, what's expected of incoming freshmen, following a musical vocation, and more.

I could have saved myself the $14.95 wasted on this "book" if I had only scrolled down to read what others thought of this garbage. How can an outdated list of schools be considered a helpful book???

1 out of 5 stars What the HELL was that!?!?!?.......2006-05-27

This book was utter garbage, I cant believe I wasted money that I could have spent on fast food or something equally lethal and delicious. If you want real help on making money, read "The Music Business: How YOU can make $500,000 "or more" a year in the music industry by Doing it Yourself!". Thats what helped me through college.

1 out of 5 stars A Waste of my Money.......2005-11-22

This book is not at all what it is billed to be. It is simply a (very long) listing of all colleges in the U.S. that offer degrees in music, and their addresses, phone number and website addresses. There is no other information offered. What does a parent or student do with all this information? Not much!

                1 out of 5 stars A Complete Waste.......2005-11-01

My daughter expressed interest in pursuing her music after high school, so this book caught my eye. One would expect that a book entitled "Student's Guide to College Music Programs" might actually provide some information about college music programs. This book is little more than a list of colleges that offer a music program, along with website listings. A five minute Google search will provide more information than is offered by this "guide". The schools are organized by state, and in an apparent effort to beef up the book a little, each state section starts with a recitation of the state's population, state bird, motto, flower and tree, the total number of square miles in the state and the date the state was admitted to the United States -- crucial information when selecting a music program.

                1 out of 5 stars Useless.......2007-08-21

I was expecting something more along the line of what the Princeton Review makes for undergraduate colleges or med schools ... not at all. This book is useless. They basically provide you with contact information, which I can look that up online for free. All they do is list programs and do not include any helpful information about them such as admission statistics or student opinions.

2 out of 5 stars Not worth the trouble.......2006-04-11

This book is not helpful when trying to find a degree program that matches your interests. Only for a handful of universities do they provide the masters programs offered by the school.

We looked up the NIU college of performing arts and the ENTIRE entry was copied from the NIU college of liberal arts and sciences...What does having a plant molecular biology center have to do with performing arts?

Most of the book is just basic information: phone numbers, addresses, and requirements for admissions. But this information is useless to me unless I intened to call every single school and find out what programs they offer. It's easier to just search over the interenet!
