Bank Robber Claims Battered Woman's Syndrome to Avoid Jail.......2007-02-13
The crime detailed in this true crime by Lee Butcher is not one that gets the adrenline pumping and makes you read all night to get to the end. This book tells the story of Nestor "Chino" DeJesus and Paula Guitierrez, a couple of slackers who decide to rob a bank so that they can have all the things they want without having to hold a job.
Unfortunately, their plan fails. And, as generally happens, they are cornered by police. Unfortunately, they are cornered in the apartment of man who was home due to illness and he is taken captive. In the end, Chino takes the coward's way out (suicide) and Paula surrenders. But it's her pitiful tale of being a battered woman, forced by Chino to commit the crime, and a devious attempt to avoid jail time. Her "story" is the bulk of the book.
Personally, woman who have truly suffered at the hands of a man should be outraged that someone like Paula uses that as a means to avoid prosecution. On the other hand, I'm sure that those who will believe her sad little lies (ie, her public defender) and defend her stance. Fortunately, a jury didn't see it that way.
You'll have to read it and just decide for yourself!

Customer Reviews:
A page turner..........2004-05-31
This book takes off on a whole new path, following Tae's cousin and his groupies :) I was quickly and surprisingly hooked by the new storyline, and finished reading the book wanting to know more. It was nice to see Jung-Woo looking older (and much more attractive!), and even though I am still interested in how Tae and her boy are doing, I can't wait to find out what happens next to the new main characters. All the action from the first book is present, but with a closer look at Jung-Woo and introduction to some feisty individuals!
Not Bad.......2004-05-23
The author kind of strayed from the first one. There was less cross dressing, none in fact. But the book is still good and goes along with Tae's cousin more than it did in the last one.

What Happened?!?!.......2006-12-15
Before I give anything a review I read at least 4 volumes in the series and I can honestly say that this is the first time my opinion has completely changed for the worse after reading the other volumes. In all fairness, I will say that volume 1 was great, I loved it, and I truly believe it should have been a stand alone story. Sure, the plot has been used before, girl goes to an all guys school, pretends to be a guy to be close to the one she loves, chaos ensues. . . Anyone who reads shoujo knows this plot. But here's the thing: this plot is only in the first volume. After that both Jung-Woo and Tae Yeon go back to their own schools and a whole new plot comes into play: lots of gang wars, new characters and a strange and slightly confusing storyline. Maybe it was confusing because it started out as one thing and ended up something completely different. Had I only read vol. 1, this series would have had a much higher grade.
The Verdict:
If you want a good `girl goes to an all-guy's school' manga read Hana-Kimi, if you like to have the plot switch on you after volume 1, this series is for you. C
Addicting!.......2006-12-03
When I picked up this book in my library while searching through the racks, it didn't seem to hold much promise. The plot seemed like pure fluff and the cliches overused. Generally, I go for something more thought provoking. But...oh boy, was I wrong.
The fantastic art style and quick plot immediately sucked me in. I finished three volumes just sitting in the chair in the library, desperately turning the next page. I actually jumped when somebody came up the stairs, I was so engrossed. I was devestated when they didn't have Volume 4 and no other libraries in my area do...
But enough about me (was that about me?). I highly recommend this to anybody, even if it doesn't seem like their type. I'm normally a shonen person. I'll have to go out and buy the next few volumes....But take my word for it, it would be a worthwhile buy.
borrrrrrinnngggg.......2006-02-16
it's about someone in a gang. I didnt like the characters or the storyline.
Not great, but very very good.......2005-05-27
i first discovered this book on Amazon and thought it looked kind of interesting, but didn't really want to buy it. when i came across it at a bookstore, i took a second look and figured it might be ok, even though the plot seemed predictable and overused. when i first started reading it, i was still a little skeptcle, but after the first 10 pages or so, i was sucked into the story. i have read many many manga books and several with the same type of plot, but this book is unique. i found myself laughing out loud at several scenes and situations involving Tae and Ga-Woon.The artwork is not extremely beautiful but fits the story well. Overall it is one of the better manga books i have read, and i have read a LOT.
Hooked.......2004-07-19
When I first read the cover I thought it would be interesting. But it totally blew my ideas away. The main plot idea is a little over used. But what happens once Teas gets to her cousins school is way funny. Not only does she get beaten by the school bully. He then asks her to join his gang. But Kun is catching on to the fact that Jung-woo just might be a girl. Now some of the boys are doubting their sexuality. As Teas makes her cousin more popular than he would like. While Jung-woo makes all the girls not talk to her any more. The first volume centers around Tea and her pretending to be her cousin. But there also great character developments with the bully and the model. The story is totally sweet and has really nice illustartions. The second book centers around Jung-woo and the after math of his cousin. So it seems that the main characters piviot each volume. Making it even more interesting. If you like humor, romance, and a few good old fashion beatings now and then be sure to read Kill Me Kiss Me. It is sure to entertain many

Book Description
Samantha Leiffer is trying to get a grip on reality. Her live-in boyfriend, detective John Krull, isn't deeply troubled, he's just quiet. Her ex isn't a stalker, he's just trying to be friendly. And the nerdy stranger who gives Sam a note warning her of danger unless she calls him, is just hitting on her-until one by one, people vaguely connected to her start getting killed. Now Sam knows she's not imagining the murderer-and that he's closer than she thinks.

don't waste your time.......2006-11-07
if you like simple mysteries written simply, this book is for you.
Samantha and John are back again.......2006-11-02
Picking up a year or so after "Hide Your Eyes" Samantha and Detective John Krull are now living together, but the relationship is anything but rosy. After 9/11 Krull begins to close himself off from Samantha.
Suddenly, a woman living in the same apartment Samantha used to live in is murdered. A stranger is sending Samantha notes warning her of the danger she is in. Someone is watching her every move and she is somehow connected to the horrible crimes. The evidence points to Detective John Krull. Is he really capable of murder? Samantha is determined to know the truth, but can she handle it?
"You Kill Me" was suspenseful from the start and never let up. I couldn't turn the pages quick enough. This author has great potential and I look forward to reading more from Alison Gaylin.
Is it worth buying?
Yes. Although it is better to have read "Hide Your Eyes" first, so the reader has better knowledge of how Samantha and John first met and what brought them together. Hide your Eyes was more of a romantic suspense, where You Kill Me is more of a mystery.
I hope there's a third book with John & Sam! .......2006-09-15
Samatha Leiffer is a pre-school teacher and works part-time in an off, off Broadway ticket office, The Space. She's also the daughter of a famous self help guru. And she also seems to be a bit of a magnet for serial killers.
In "Hide Your Eyes", while out on a break from The Space she witnessed a couple dumping a large ice chest into the river. Although the police think she's overreacting at first, when an ice chest is found, with a little girl's body they begin to take her seriously.
So begins Sam's relationship with John Krull, NYPD detective, which continues in "You Kill Me". John and Sam have been living together for a year and a half. Suddenly, Sam begins receiving notes warning her that she is in danger. Then the woman who moved into Sam's old apartment is brutally murdered. At the same time, John starts disappearing for hours, sometimes overnight, during which time he can't be contacted and he has no explanation for where he's been.
I really enjoyed this book, even more than "Hide Your Eyes". The only problem I had was the resolution of John's absences. He had to know Sam thought he was having an affair and he should have never kept the secret he kept from her for two years. But he is still a good guy who loves her very much and as someone else pointed out they are a committed couple.
The end of the book set up for another sequel and I can't wait!
Better than its predecessor (Hide Your Eyes).......2006-06-13
It has been a year since pre-school teacher Samantha Lieffer assisted in a murder investigation. She is now living with the detective in charge, John Krull, who is getting over the loss of so many friends and colleagues from 9/11. Krull is remote, and Samantha cannot reach him, and assumes his many absences mean he is having an affair.
When a stranger in a cafe approaches her and gives her a note warning of danger, Krull's overambitious partner calls in the bomb squad, only to find nothing. When she learns that the woman who took over her apartment lease has been brutally murdered, and she continues to receive the notes she gets nervous and feels like she is being followed. Her sex-addicted former lover tries to regain closure in a 12-step program by befriending an uninterested Sam, and when people around her suddenly turn up dead, and Krull becomes even more remote, Samantha questions whether the man she has given her heart to could be behind the crime spree.
"You Kill Me" is a gripping psychological thriller that will pull the reader in and question where the story is going all the way to the final page. Gaylin has managed to do what few authors can do - pen a sequel that is better than its predecessor.
Another "Killer" Book from Gaylin.......2006-01-19
I confess, I loved "Hide Your Eyes" and hoped this wouldn't be another disappointing sophomore effort. So, I enjoyed the first half of the book, catching up on the lives of our heroes. It drew me in, had me intriged and I was very satisfied for the first 200 pages or so... Then Gaylin suddenly steps on the gas, launches into overdrive and achieves that "can't put it down" feeling you hope for whenever you start a novel. Whew.
While I'm in the story, I just wish life could be easier for Samantha Leiffer, but, when I'm looking for another book to read, I'm so happy to have found a character I love to follow who manages to lead such a thrill-filled adventurous life.

Stories of Deception, Desperation, and Death.......2005-11-06
"Murder in Vegas" is an interesting anthology of short stories set in and around Las Vegas, all of which contain a murder. The similarity between the stories stops there, with the authors choosing a number of plot lines to tell their tale. We have stories of desperate gamblers, beautiful show girls, down and out druggies, and even a story about bird-watching in the desert. My favorite story was "Killer Heels Kill Twice as Dead", by T.P. Keating, an author who I'd not read before. In this wicked tale of revenge, a smart show girl tries to get out of an unfair contract she signed under duress. She's out for revenge, and the story is a good one.
One of the most enjoyable things about reading an anthology such as this is the exposure to new authors. In addition to T.P. Keating, I also really enjoyed the stories by Wendy Hornsby and Ruth Cavin, other authors whose work I'd not read before.
Not every story in this collection really appealed to me, but there were enough good ones to definitely recommend the collection. If you're looking for to immerse yourself in the glamour and desperation of Las Vegas (without risking your money at the gambling tables), definitely read this book.
