Book Description

Many Americans were shocked by the rhetoric and demands voiced during the immigration protests in the Spring of 2006. From Los Angeles to Atlanta, from Phoenix to Chicago, an estimated two million protesters marched in more than fifty cities. They demanded a blanket amnesty for illegal aliens under the banner of "immigrant rights" and insisted that rights now afforded legal immigrants should be granted to those here illegally. Anything short of that was condemned as "racist."

How could the United States have come to such a pitiful condition?

Congressman Tom Tancredo has been the only consistent voice in our government warning Americans of the dangers of failing to secure our borders and fix the nation's immigration system. Five years after the attacks of September 11, 2001, the U.S. government still has done virtually nothing to secure America's borders. The government largely ignores the threats to our safety and sovereignty resulting from its refusal to fix a broken system.

What is happening on our borders is one story, but what is happening within America is even more disturbing. As would-be terrorists plot attacks on our country, vocal advocates of multiculturalism are sapping our strength from within. Together, they form a potent adversary that is as great a threat to our nation as anything we have faced in our history.

As a result, America is in the midst of an identity crisis. As a nation we no longer seem to know who we are or what we believe. Instead of "one nation under God," we are divided, confused, and angry. We need to understand how this has happened and the underlying causes that have us to this divided point.

Tom Tancredo lays out the case that unless the United States changes course, it is headed toward catastrophe. Like the great and mighty empires of the past—"superpowers" that onces stretched from horizon to horizon—America is heading down the road to ruin. Without strong moral leadership, without a renewed sense of purpose, without a rededication to family and community, without shunning the race hustlers and pop-culture sham artists, without protecting our borders, language, and culture, the nation that was once the "land of the free and home of the brave" and the "one last hope of mankind" will repeat the catastrophic mistakes of the past. In Mortal Danger is his prescription for beginning to repair the damage.

5 out of 5 stars author and Presidential Candidate Tom Tancredo in 2008.......2007-06-20

Colorado Representative Tancredo makes clear that the politically correct labeling of illegal laborers as "undocumented" is incorrect, as most of them have forged documents, forged social security numbers, and/or stolen identities - they are guilty of Felony Document Fraud in addition to having broken a number of other laws to be in our country illegally.

Tom Tancredo is also very clear that our governments failure to uphold our laws by prosecuting the employers of illegals, as well as prosecuting sanctuary communities, sanctuary cities, sanctuary states, and the officials that promote unconstitutional local amnesty ordinances are in themselves guilty of criminal offenses, not the least of which is aiding and abetting, and as such are subject to prosecution.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing book!.......2007-04-19

Written in an easy-to-read language, Tom Tancredo's book is a real eye-opener.

I recommend this book for any budding conservative of any age- especially if he's our next President. If this book is his campaign statement, then we have the opportunity to elect a true American.

4 out of 5 stars The issues of the US security and immigration .......2007-04-10

Congressman Tancredo does one of the best jobs I have seen tackling the all too important and all too often ignored issues of mass immigration and border security of the US. Chapter by chapter he dissects the issue of immigration and it impact on our country, our economy, our health care and the breach of security to this nation. He debunks many of the current low key patches proposed by others in government such as the guest worker program which basically grants amnesty for those who have entered here illegally by breaking the law and are rewarded for doing so. He tackles on of the biggest issues of our day, our loss of national identity in lieu of our pursuit of political correctness and "multi culturalism". He does a superb jobs of demonstrating how many illegals do not severe their bounds to their origin countries and do not make attempts at assimilation to our country and are simply here to exploit its wealth. He assets it is the US's right to decide who comes here and it should be done in this nation's best interest. He discussed how we should be proud of western civilization and illustrates many examples of how we as a society have been bombarded with the message to love all cultures and the country should suit the needs of all cultures at the loss of our own national pride and identity. There should be no hyphenated-American. My only issue is that the congressman takes the occasional political jabs at democrats (Tancredo is a conservative republican). The book would be better suited if this was avoided. Many local and state governments find themselves abandoned by the federal government when it comes to illegals and border security. It's truly an issue for the federal government and not many of our elected officials have had the political courage to resolve this problem. Our borders could very easily be secured (never 100%) so that they are not porous. The one great thing about this book is it's not just a laundry list of all the issues but offers some excellent solutions that the author is currently seeking in his elected position. A very easy read and written in simple language, every US citizen should become familiar with this subject as it could very well be our demise as a nation.

5 out of 5 stars Stop playing the race card.......2007-04-06

Tom Tancredo is a fair-minded, intelligent politician who is helping to structure debate on the issue of illegal immigration for the 2008 presidential election. He cares equally for all citizens regardless of ethnicity. His goal is to preserve the American dream for present and future American citizens. I would like to respond to the lonely reviewer from Seattle who insinuates he's some kind of racist:

Quote:
"The only thing Tancredo and his conspirators in hate contribute to the discussion is racism and ignorance."

The (silent) majority of Americans are weary of the noisy, agenda-driven groups (LaRaza, Southern Poverty Law Center, ACLU, Latino activists, Mexican politicians and just general fools) who resort to playing the race card here. There is absolutely nothing racist about being opposed to people entering the country illegally and thereby depriving legal immigrants and citizens of opportunities that rightfully come with American citizenship. These opportunities are reserved for American citizens because they are paid for by American citizens with their tax dollars. Anything else is just foreign aid.

If the people we're discussing here were blue-eyed, blonde Swedes behaving identically to the current group of illegals (i.e., driving down American workers' wages, stealing Social Security numbers and identities, demanding free health care and education that citizens aren't even entitled to, re-introducing old diseases that we've nearly licked, like tuberculosis and polio, and bringing in terrifying new ones, such as Chagas disease, bankrupting hospitals and refusing to assimilate into our society. . . if these people were light-skinned Swedes, I would want this problem dealt with in an identical manner. There simply is no basis for crying racism here, and it's a dirty tactic. When citizen Latino Americans and African Americans bear the brunt of the problem of wage reduction and opportunity loss, it's a downright ridiculous assertion.

I appreciate Tom Tancredo's amazing efforts to bring this issue to the forefront where it belongs. I urge everyone here to NOT vote for Sen. John McCain who supports a "path to citizenship" for those in this country illegally and also to pay close attention to the views of the other candidates. This book is an important tool in educating the public about this enormous problem which threatens our ability to pursue our American dreams.

5 out of 5 stars In Mortal Danger,The Battle for America's Border and Security.......2007-02-16

A superb picture of the turmoil America is in today. You will find yourself dumbfounded over the lack of immigration and border control. Should Congressman Tom Tancredo decide to run for the 2008 election of the precendency he shall definitely have my vote.

Book Description

The USA Today bestselling author returns to the fascinating world she introduced in Tempting Danger, where a woman's very soul is in mortal danger.

An agent in the FBI's Magical Crimes Division, Lily Yu's job is to hunt down a charismatic cult leader bent on bringing an ancient evil into the world. And her only hope will be to trust Rule Turner, a werewolf prince with whom she has mated. And if Lily can't trust him, she'll be lost forever.

Former cop Lily Yu has her sister's wedding to attend, a missing magical staff to find, and now must deal with her grandmother's decision to return to the old country. Lily could turn to the man she's involved with for advice, but for all the passion that flares between them, she doesn't really know Rule Turner--she's just bound to him for life. Rule happens to be a werewolf, and Lily wonders just how far she can trust him.

4 out of 5 stars Good book! Interested in seeing what happens next........2007-07-17

I'll admit it. I bought this book merely to "tide me over" until one of my favorite authors came out with something new in the genre of paranormal romance. I honestly was surprised!

I jumped into it mid-series, but I didn't feel overwhelmingly lost. The characters are well written and its steamy but not embarrassingly so. The beginning was a little rocky. I can't remember if this story had a prologue or perhaps it was the opening chapter...but it did make me wonder if I had made a mistake. I kept reading though and after that it was pretty smooth sailing for me!

You have lycanthropes, demons, mortals, dragons, and magic users oh my! Bad things bent on world domination, and good things bent on stopping them. The main female character in the story is well written with the title of pragmatist and budding tough chic invisibly stamped on her forehead. The main guy character...alpha with a heart. I'd give you a run down on the story, but frankly its a little hard to put into a one paragraph blurb.

I'm giving it 4 stars, simply because its better than a straight three and there isn't say a 3 and a 1/2 or 3/4 star option available to me. It's not the very best thing out there on the shelf but its pretty good. I am looking forward to the sequel. As far as would I recommend it? Sure, I would...to someone who enjoys the genre.

4 out of 5 stars Take a Trip to Hell.......2007-05-18

This is the second in a series of three (so far). I recommend reading all three, in order. This has a very imaginative take on Dis (Hell) and also has dragons, which is fun. The characters are well developed and the romance is vivid without being overwhelming. I had a little trouble buying the demon but it was a small thing. Overall, a very enjoyable read.

5 out of 5 stars Good characters...Interesting Plot.......2007-03-26

I became familiar with Eileen Wilks' writing through stumbling across her book "Blood Lines" which is actually the third in this series, but I thoroughly enjoyed that story, although it was clear that this was not the beginning of the tale between Lily Yu and Rule Turner. I liked it well enough that I went back and read through the first two books introducing these characters, and they didn't disappoint. I found her writing to be clear and her action interesting enough to keep me turning the pages, and looking forward to learning more about the world that she's created with this series.

4 out of 5 stars Solid entry in supernatural adventure/romance series.......2007-03-02

Mortal Danger, by Eileen Wilks, is the second in an ongoing series about paranormal investigator Lily Yu and her werewolf significant other. There's certainly nothing unusual in the set-up, but the books are distinguished by solid writing and plotting. Eileen Wilks first came to my attention with a short story in the anthology Cravings; from that first taste, I knew I would be following up. I'm glad I did, but this book is not the place to start the series. Wilks assumes that you will be familiar with her characters, and woe betide you if you aren't. If you haven't read Tempting Danger, read it first. This book is very like it. Wilks makes a refreshing change from those paranormal adventure/romance authors who skimp on the adventure and head straight for the sex. Unless you're after the sex, in which case this is not the book for you. She doesn't shy away from that aspect of her story, but it's far from the most important. I find her characters intelligently and believably written and her adventures engaging.

4 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 stars ouutstanding.......2007-02-06

Outstanding detective paranormal fantasy. Lily is now working for the FBI with Rule as a consultant. We also have Cynna a powerful talent, Max a grouchy gnome, a demon, Cullen a striper sorcerer, and assorted other characters. Some humor as when Lily gets on a local cop who is less than helpful. Good characters, good plot, one good brief erotic scene. Just short of being excellent, marred by some typos (cold for could) and editorial inconsistencies. I strongly advise reading this series in order with Tempting Danger first. Its a good read and the series makes better sense that way.

The two GI cops Martin Limon first introduced in Jade Lady Burning are back with a vengeance in their latest adventures in 1970s Seoul and the sin cities surrounding the capital. While North Korea menaces and Vietnam burns, these two weave through back alleys and bordellos, trying to tip the scales of justice back in the right direction.

This time they are not only pursuing criminals-they're chasing themselves. Homicidal thieves have gotten hold of Sueno's badge and are using it to trick their victims just long enough to strike-with his gun. The army wants his equipment accounted for, the ID and weapon recovered. George and Ernie want to recover their reputation, such as it is . . . and stop the killings.

                4 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-07-06

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The only reason I gave this one four stars is that I think his earlier books are five stars and this one is not as perfect as the others. That being said, buy all of Marin Limon's books and read them in sequence. If you have ever been in Korea, you'll enjoy the mystery entangled with a journey "down memory lane." If you've never been there - buy the books anyway. I am a fan!! When is the next book coming out?

                4 out of 5 stars A great weekend read.......2006-07-08

If you have a weekend with some ugly weather and time for good reading, consider this Limon book. Characters Sueno and Bascom remain the same as in previous books but are getting a bit predictable. The story angle though is not predictable. There are enough turns to keep you awake and alert. As some GIs in Korea have been known to say "Same same but different" My only regret is that it took so long for "The Door to Bitterness" to be published since the last Limon book.

4 out of 5 stars Strangers in a strange land.......2006-01-28

The Door to Bitterness opens with GI cop George Sueno awakening in an alley, slowly realizing that his gun and badge are missing. Alarming in and of itself, the robbery may also cost Sueno his career, as losing your gun is one of the greatest sins an American officer stationed in 1974 South Korea can commit. A court martial is almost certain.

Sueno's dismay increases when it becomes apparent that his gun was used in a casino robbery where one of the establishment's employees was critically wounded. Searching for the gun, Sueno and his hotheaded partner Ernie Bascom follow up every lead, however slim, soon discovering that the gun's new owner is pursuing a personal vendetta.

Told from Sueno's perspective, The Door to Bitterness tells a tale of two strangers in a strange land, two foreigners who must cope with both a foreign culture and the ways of that culture's underworld. Limon effectively conveys Sueno's love/hate relationship with that culture, creating an atmosphere of confusion and dread that permeates every page. He also convincingly evokes Sueno's panic and despair at losing his gun, elevating a crime novel to the level of a mythic quest. The fourth Sueno/Bascom book (following Jade Lady Burning, Slicky Boys, and Buddha's Money), The Door to Bitterness is a mesmerizing piece of work, a moving and complex tragedy which manages to evoke the reader's sympathies for cops and criminals alike.

                5 out of 5 stars A Tasty Stew.......2005-10-25

Martin Limon is the best writer of mysteries writing today. He transcends the genre and produces great literature. After the somewhat disappointing Buddha's Money (where, I'm convinced, his publisher bullied him into making a "Hollywood version" of his work), The Door to Bitterness finds Limon in top form.

                What are his works like?
Imagine a recipe for a tasty stew:
Start with characters as fully developed and interesting as Reginald Hill's Dalziel and Pascoe (but make Pascoe the narrator and give him some street smarts).
Stir in a police procedural plot as well designed as one of Ed McBain's 87th Precinct novels.
Fold in a peacetime military background as rich as James Jones' classic (in fact, Limon writes about the peacetime military better than any writer since Jones)
For spice, add something uniquely Limon: an awareness and sensitivity to Korean culture and a poignant awareness of the inevitable change and corruption of an ancient civilization as it copes with Western influence.

One can't compare this last point to Kipling or Conrad, because, although Limon is every bit as sensitive toward Asian culture as those two writers, they essentially stood above the subjects they wrote about. In a post-colonial world, Limon looks at Korean culture with a different eye, one on the same level as his subject.

If Limon's background is anything like that of George Sueno, the protagonist/narrator of the books, one can understand his extraordinary empathy. His hero grew up an outsider, an Hispanic in LA foster homes, and suddenly finds himself again an outsider in South Korea, only this time as a gringo (since the Koreans don't recognize racial differences among Caucasian soldiers). This strange outsider looking at the world from below transformed into an outsider looking at the world from above creates a wonderful point of view which keeps you off balance and allows the reader to discover new perspectives on every page.

Limon clearly loves Korean culture, and you learn a lot about Korean culture from him. His characters - American and Korean - are fully rounded people. He understands the importance of the military presence in Korea, even as he is aware of the deleterious effects it has on society. And his mysteries keep you hopping.

Martin Limon is a retired military policemen, so some part of his books must be a roman a'clef. From his novels, you gain insight to Martin Limon the man and you can see from his observations and attitudes that he must be a good cop, a good soldier and a good man. And all of that adds up to make him a terrific novelist.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite series going-.......2005-08-18

I really like Martin Limon's series and his irrascible protagonists George Sueno and Ernie Bascom. Door into Bitterness is the fourth installment and I have been waiting impatiently for six years for this novel. Limon is an extremely talented writer who has not received the attention and acclaim he deserves; his writing has such presence and conveys such atmosphere you feel transported to whatever time and place he takes you, in this instance, 1970's Korea.

George and Ernie are military investigators nominally tasked with keeping an eye on the free-wheeling black market barter economy outside Korean army bases and insuring US servicemen neither get in too much trouble nor cause too much trouble. Their intrepretation of their role is a lot less rigid than probably what their supervisors had in mind and so they often turn a blind eye to much of what they are supposed to police, nor are they are above having a good time in the adult wonderland themselves. Their attitude to policing vice outside the army bases is simply a very realistic assessment on their part because there is only so much you can do when a country is flooded with 19 year old soldiers with big paychecks and the local populace is only too accomodating in finding compelling and interesting means to separate them from their money. George and Ernie, while not above availing themselves of a good time, do take their job seriously though. They may not try to fight human nature if a seviceman wants to barter cigarettes for sex, but they do take violent exception to, in this novel, robbery, kidnapping and murder. Especially when they are on the receiving end of part of the mayhem. Thieves drug, beat and abandon George but not before absconding with his badge and gun. They then use these items to commit a robbery/murder. Facing a courts martial for losing his service sidearm, the commanding general gives our team one chance to find the weapon and capture the criminals before facing the consequences.

I whole-heartedly recommend this book. On the surface, it is a fairly straight forward investigation told from George's point-of-view. Underneath is a breathtakingly beautiful work of poignancy, despair, hope, alieness, and redemption. Limon is a masterful writer because he doesn't tell you things, he lets you learn things only through the narrow lens of perception; both yours and that of the characters. It is through dialogue, action, and reaction that his story unfolds not the simple, clumsy narrative descriptions most writers resort to. We experience Korea through the eyes of an anguished young hispanic orphan who has become a military investigator, and the story unfolds like the petals of a lotus. This book, Door into Bitterness, is aptly named for there is much that is heart-rending in this novel, but I feel the work still signals a return, after a long hiatus, to a less bleak world view for George and Ernie. Buddha's Money, the third novel, was almost too much to endure, except for the magical qualities of the gifted writing. My take? I love this book, I love the series, Limon is a master fo his craft, and I sincerely hope I do not have to wait another six years for the next book.
