4 out of 5 stars Perfect Title.......2006-11-14

This book was good much better than the first book "Blinded" Cam is the grimiest hands down I also like the HIV saga that takes place in this book It can happen to anyone at anytime we women must be careful what happened to Cam's brother in jail don't just happen in books it happens every where don't be so quick to mess with them men coming outta the joint don't know what or who went down. Book is a good read I'll recommend it.

2 out of 5 stars GRIMEY,GRIMEY.......2006-08-02

I REALLY THOUGHT THAT WHEN I GOT THIS BOOK THAT IT WOULD GIVE A BANGING ENDING TO BLINDED.THE CHARACTER KAMERON WAS NOT AS ILL HEARTED LIKE HE WAS IN BLINDED. THEN YOU ONLY HEAR OF PRINCE AT THE BEGINNING AND END OF THE BOOK. IT JUST DIDNT GIVE YOU WHAT YOU THOUGHT IT WOULD BE.

3 out of 5 stars Not sequal material.......2006-06-25

I thought this was supposed to be about Mona and getting revenge? Instead we have a whole new group of characters that tell a different story and focus on something totally different. Of course Camron was still out cold and he got his in the end, but this was not a sequal. This book held it's own and you don't necessarily need to read blinded to get this book. It wasn't as good as blinded and most of the dialogue was unnesessary.

3 out of 5 stars It Could Have Been Better.......2006-06-08

I think this book could have been better. The twist between El'san and sweetie is nice and all, but I dont like how the author kept switching and switching. I mean, in other books it was fine, but it seemed like the book was based only on El'san and Sweetie. I thought it was supposed to be karma for Cam. This book does need to be edited. I'm tired of seeing this [...]. I mean, damn, they dont know how to spell? The funniest thing that needed to be edited was the comment about "Bobby" Brown lipgloss... Hellooooooooo everyone knows Bobbi Brown is a female... come on... that makes no sense. Anyways, this book was alright. Blinded was good, but not the best book. Kashamba needs just a little bit more work.

4 out of 5 stars KUDOS.......2006-06-01

Finally, a good sequel. This book was a good read. If you read and liked Blinded, then you should really pick this one up. REAL TALK. It didn't dwell on Blinded's story. It was a whole new story with even some new characters. Like, Sweetie, the thievin bohemian. It also has more to the stories of the characters from the last book. Yall remember what Mona caught Kenny doing in Blinded. Not to mention her hot friend Nee. Ah yea, this book has some BUTTA to it. Go head Kashamba keep doing your thang. I'll support you.

Spirit Sickness marks the return of Bureau of Indian Affairs investigator Emmett Quanah Parker, a Comanche, and FBI special agent Anna Turnipseed, a Modoc, who first pooled their investigative talents in Cry Dance. Anna is recovering from a vicious attack and dreads returning to the field; Emmett, however, will do whatever he can to lure her back to active duty. When the bodies of tribal patrolman Bert Knoki and his wife are found in a fire-gutted police cruiser in a remote wash on the Navajo reservation, Emmett seizes the opportunity to request Anna's help. As the investigation unfolds, the agents find themselves questioning the dead cop's integrity, delving into a gritty world of poverty and prostitution (just what was Knoki doing visiting a Utah cult in the company of a hooker?), and confronting the eerie legacy of Navajo myth.

That myth centers around the figure of the Gila Monster, said to cure sickness with his trembling paw and to be charged with redeeming the sins of the first Indians by destroying them. Emmett and Anna, who have long sublimated their traditional upbringing to a more rational modernism, must struggle with a madman who has woven his insanity into the myth of the Gila Monster, creating his own reality--and his own very real victims.

The novel is workmanlike, rather than inspired. Although press releases have touted Kirk Mitchell as a threat to Tony Hillerman's supremacy in rendering the lives, secrets, and crimes of the Native American Southwest, Mitchell has yet to approach Hillerman's delicacy of touch and effortless integration of native culture into crime narratives. Mitchell's references to Navajo myth seem ponderous, distant, and irrelevant to the unfolding action. The same complaint might be made of the onerous distraction that is the subplot of romantic attraction between Parker and Turnipseed. If the reader is utterly unable to detect any hint of sexual tension between the two, one wonders why they spend so much energy--and so many pages--fretting about it. --Kelly Flynn

Book Description

In the tradition of Tony Hillerman and Joseph Wambaugh comes this suspense thriller reuniting Bureau of Indian Affairs Criminal Investigator Emmett Quanah Parker and FBI Special Agent Anna Turnipseed, two Native American cops torn between their heritage and the law.

A fire-gutted police cruiser found in a remote part of the Navajo reservation bears witness to a horrific crime: inside are the bodies of a tribal patrolman and his wife. As BIA Investigator Emmett Parker and FBI Special Agent Anna Turnipseed know, a cop's murder is never simple, raising countless questions and suspicions.

When another murder is discovered, the case explodes into an otherworldly realm. Both Parker, a Comanche, and Turnipseed, a Modoc, are well acquainted with the eerie shadowland between native myth and modern homicide investigation. Now they will have to touch minds with a murderer who has woven personal madness with Navajo myth to create his own reality -- and with it the need to kill and kill again.

5 out of 5 stars Great Four Corners mystery.......2007-02-11

I don't know why everyone has to compare him to Hillerman. Both are very good but very different. The only similarities are the location but it stops there. Mitchell's move a lot faster and spend a lot less time describing the scenery. They are a lot more thrilling while Hillerman's are slower pace and more relaxing. It all depends on what you are in the mood for. Both writers are great and if you like this area of the country you will enjoy both. As to the other guys criticism about Parker and Turnipseed crawling under the mobile home---give us a break--this is FICTION! It fits in with the story quite well!

2 out of 5 stars *Silly*.......2006-06-28

Are we really to believe that a seasoned BIA agent and an FBI agent would actually crawl underneath a mobile with a flashlight on their bellies when they have expectations that someone with a gun may be hiding there and "might shoot them in the face" ? Please and the author is a law enforcement officer? What tactical procedure book did he get this scenario from? A canine unit would have been called in and a dog sent in, no matter if the canine unit was an hour away as the author indicates to cover his lame story line. Real law enforcement would have secured the site and waited for the dogs as there was no imminent threat. This is my first Mitchell and it will most likely be my last. When I read the preceding ludicrous scenario in the first quarter of the book I found it so silly I nearly threw the book aside and decided to spend my time with something better written. But I was curious just how silly this whole thing would get and my assumption that it would was proven correct.

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down.......2006-05-16

If you're a fan of Indian Country whodunits, Kirk Mitchell is tops. I could go on, but I'd just be repeating myself. This is a terrific read.

5 out of 5 stars A very gripping read..........2003-03-11

I read 'Ancient Ones' and the prequels, 'Spirit Sickness' and 'Cry Dance' in one week-end, that is how un-put-down-able I consider these books. The last book kept me up well into the night.

To comment on the much debated comparisons to Tony Hillerman: I am a great fan of the Leaphorn/Chee series, but personally, I am finding I prefer Mitchell to Hillerman at this point. I find Mitchell's books faster paced and more complex, therefore more gripping. With Hillerman, it got too easy to guess who the bad guy was. It was always (or almost always) the white one.

With regard to the relationship between Parker and Tunipseed, I think it ads a great deal to the story and in no way detracts from the plot. This level of character development is rare in these types of books, and I find it a refreshing change. It makes them real, flaws and all, as opposed to being two-dimensional cookie-cutter crimefighters. Strangely, no one seems to have a problem when Hillerman's main characters are involved in relationships. I wonder if it is the child abuse angle that is making people uncomfortable here. In any case, I am looking forward to seeing how Emmett and Anna's relationship evolves in the fourth book (I hope the author has plans for a fourth book in this series, if not more!).

5 out of 5 stars Satisfying and Mature Page Turner.......2002-06-10

Mitchell has taken the emerging Indian Reservation Mystery genre and transported it beyond the cliches. This satisfying novel is mature on several levels: plot development, character development, sophistication and depravity of the villians' human motives (as well as those of some good guys, too).

This is a good page-turner with fresh twists on the "torn between two worlds" modern Indian/cop conflict. The believably sketched heroes are delightfully flawed and vulnerable--though their stamina occasionally stretches credulity.

The settings of the multi-layered but comprehensible plot move us on and off the rez with gritty, believable reality. Mitchell creates credible characters without any of the tired Indian-as-misunderstood-and-victimized-mystic trappings that reduces some other novelists' efforts in the genre.

Mitchell even manages to transcend the usual, cliche conflicts between tribal police departments and federal law enforcement agencies while maintaining a realistic sense of bureaucratic functioning. And get this, not every bureaucrat is wooden and incompetent!

The inventive plot evolves with taut exposition and the believability that's born of both familiarity and homework. You'll be surprised at some developments, and smugly proud of your powers of deduction in predicting others. But you'll never feel cheated.

All in all, this is a tale as fresh, stimulating, and welcome as a spring rain over a desert in the four corners.

5 out of 5 stars Good book on living with dogs.......2005-06-18

When I saw this book I was surprised-like many people might be-to discover Greg Louganis trains dogs and lives with a pack of them, from several great danes to a "Jack Russell terrorist". As I read the book I found his enthusiasm towards dogs and understanding their behavior absolutely contagious. I found this book very encouraging and helpful. It may not be the best book on specific training techniques but I thought it provided great overall information on what you can do to really enjoy having dogs into your life.

1 out of 5 stars It's all about Greg, very little solid information!.......2004-05-21

I expected advice on how to be a good owner, how to understand your dog and her needs, solutions to common problems. I hoped for training tips.

Reading this book was like submitting to an endless lecture from a disapproving grandparent, who alternates between lecturing and bragging.

Surprise! What I didn't expect:
- to learn what & how Greg thinks about himself and his dogs
- so many photos of Greg.. Greg and Greg's dogs

4 out of 5 stars A Nice Additional Perspective on Living with Dogs.......2003-09-08

I really liked this book. It added a loving perspective to dog-rearing that I did not find in other books I'd read -- and I read many! Yes it's true that Louganis uses personal stories about his dogs and lifestyle, but I did not find them to be bragging. Instead, he is realistic about what it is like to live and travel with dogs on a daily basis. He also has stories which exemplify the difference between large breeds vs terriers which were helpful to me as the new owner of a Norwich. If you are looking for a book specifically about dog training, this is not it, but his perspective on many aspects of dog-rearing: puppyhood vs adolescence, breeding, illness, and euthanasia are helpful to put the lifespan of your dog in front of you when you start. I personally would have liked a little more on puppy socialization, and that includes interacting with young children, and a little more on housebreaking, but this is a warm tribute from a man who obviously loves his dog family and gives them a great deal of respect.

5 out of 5 stars The best "all around" dog book ever..........2003-06-06

As a shelter volunteer, when I read this I kept hearing my own voice...talking to people who were wanting to adopt dogs: gently and encouragingly explaining how they should choose a dog (not based upon looks or on their general understanding of a certain breed), how to train their dog in a positive fashion (not using an "I'll show you who is boss" attitude)...It's ALL here...EVERYTHING... everything that I explain over and over and over again as I try to educate potential adopters hoping some of it sticks, and as I try to find the VERY BEST match for "my" dogs. I really don't understand when people say this book is about Great Danes..I didn't get that AT ALL. Just because he uses his own dogs as examples and draws from his own experiences doesn't mean you can't generalize ALL of this material to other dogs, not to mention that there is a large section devoted to terriors (he owns a JRT) and to mixed breed dogs. The only shortcoming I found was the lack of information the absolute necessity of spaying and neutering. Breeding should be left to a very few professionals, and the rest of us need to spay and neuter...and I wish he had touched upon that issue more adamantly. Also, the way the book is layed out isn't really user friendly. It's more memoir style so that you might miss out on some really good ideas and tips that are buried in a paragraph of text. Other than that, this book is the perfect primer for new pet owners. I bought three copies -- one for myself, one for our shelter library, and one for a friend who was contemplating dog ownership.

What happens when your spouse is no longer the same person you first married? How does marriage change us, and how do we change our marriage?Sometimes marriage seems a shaky proposition at best, and never more so than when the honeymoon fades to reality. For Karen Propp, reality meant knowingly marrying a man who had already undergone a course of radiation for prostate cancer and who, mere weeks before the birth of their son, faces surgery that will compromise his life and their marriage on every level. In this humorous, poignant, well-crafted narrative, we see Karen torn between a growing son and ailing husband. We witness the ups and downs, the love and the loss between a man and a woman as they struggle against but emerge victorious over a very intimate disease. In Sickness and in Health is an honest exploration of the loss and disappointment associated with married life, as well as a love story that shows how a woman is irrevocably changed by the love she shares with her husband, and the depths that love is plumbed by the specter of illness.

5 out of 5 stars Well written and informative.......2003-02-11

Very informative, well written in a clear and easy to read style.

Women who are into touchy feely relationship stuff will like this book. I did even though I am a guy.

          5 out of 5 stars Simply wonderful.......2002-11-23

This book is simply wonderful--moving, funny, uncompromisingly intimate and honest. The author has revealed her inner self to the reader--with all the ups and downs of real life. As characters in the book, the husband and wife pass through stages in which they evolve and reach a higher level of perception of the other. It reads like a novel, only better, because there are no pat answers and formulaic denouements in what is simply a story about the demands the realities of life make on two intelligent, sensitive and mature adults. This book is meaningful not only for prostate cancer survivors but for so many of us who are going through the changes aging makes in us and in the ways we relate to one another.

          5 out of 5 stars I couldn't put this book down.......2002-09-08

I have been somewhat deprived of reading time for the last five years--I have a young child, mortgage, aging parents, demanding career, expensive tastes and so forth. But after reading the first few pages--the first scene, I became dazzled with the way it was written and did not stop until I finished.

Though it deals with illness and serious loss, it reads as an adventure novel and entrances you with its dynamic cinematic style. Extreme dificulties provide the matrix for the story--but that matrix rests on a soft cushion of human warmth and life's conditions--things we can all relate to.

The personal honesty of the presentation lets you see yourself within such circumstances. It leaves a glimmer of hope that should such tragedy befall you, through reading this book, you might have learned to have the grace, sparkling insight and clarity of thought to experience your own life as richly as this story is told.

          5 out of 5 stars Loving and honest - a remarkable book.......2002-08-08

With both lyricism and candor, Karen Propp has written a remarkable book about love shadowed by danger - in this case her husband's battle with prostate cancer. When Karen and Sam first meet, they are old enough and sensible enough not to have many illusions, but neither is prepared for his diagnosis. The treatments leave both devastated, but despite the grim facts of living with recurrent cancer, their love for each other keeps them together. This book is indeed, as the subtitle proclaims, a love story. It is also a story of survival, not, as one might expect, for Sam, but for Propp.

The obvious recommendation would be for women whose husbands suffer from prostate cancer because Propp supplies details on the controversy of various treatments, of impotency, of therapy and support groups, of learning to live with a spouse forever changed, of raising a child in a house of illness. However, Propp's examination of the interior of her marriage makes for compelling reading for a general readership.

In Sickness & In Health should be required reading for all couples grappling with illness in the family. Even those untouched as yet by such a crisis will find the poignant examination of love and the stubborn will to survive a reason to read this book.

            Book Description

This book makes a tremendously important contribution to the dialogue between Christian faith and the healing professions. Noting that "knowing what to do and how and when to do it characterizes the essence of spiritual discernment and differential diagnosis," John Chirban has focused this col-lection of articles around the critical issue of understanding in the therapeu-tic encounter. Drawing on the richness of the Orthodox Christian tradition, contributors identify rich resources to aid this process of therapeutic discernment. The result is a book that should be recognized for its value not only to Orthodox Christians but to all Christians with interest in under-standing the nature of personal formation, deformation and transformation.

              Customer Reviews:

              5 out of 5 stars Amazing insights.......2007-05-14

I find the book interesting and stimulating. I was skeptical when I read the first chapter. However as I read on, the questions from Dr McDowall were thoughtful and the answers and advice from the spiritual guides were meaningful and deep, but at the same time practical and touched a lot on our attitude to life. This book gave me some insights into how healers work. It also helped me to reflect on my experience, strengthen some of my beliefs and open some doors. It is a book one can read many times over and learn something new each time no matter what your belief system is.

5 out of 5 stars The inside story from someone who knows.......2007-02-04

Dr. Don McDowall's book "The Truth About Sickness and Healing" has fabulous lessons and jewels in it culled from his long life in service to others. I read a few of them to my patient-friends while I was in Seattle, and they found them not only profound but "religous." Dr. McDowall's books about the healers and "shamans" of the Philippines, his "Clinical Pearls" from his long-life as an applied kinesiology chiropractor, his long spiritual journeys around the world and through the burgeoning channels of the human heart, his splendid writing style and his obvious love of life all come through in his work. He and his wife Annie (a two-headed oracular creature from the ancient wisdom schools of humanity) present a comprehensive picture of the methods for opening "the doors of perception" in order to discover that love, happiness, long-life and health are just under our noses if we but look.

A small book to keep in ones pocket during your journeys through life.

5 out of 5 stars A Book to Remind You Who You Are.......2003-10-16

Donald McDowall's "The Truth about Sickness and Healing" is a profoundly revealing book. This is a book that has both taught me, and at the same time reminded me, of much of life's higher wisdom and knowledge.

It is written in a style that takes you on a wonderful adventure, and is highly inspirational as you feel you are embarking on a unique quest to unlock the true nature of your being. McDowall's journey of self-discovery becomes your journey of self-discovery, as you are drawn into this unique quest for understanding.

Remarkably, this book has acted as a guide to show me how I might allow healing to take place in my own life, and has also reminded me of possibilities and profound insights that I had shut myself off from for many years.

"The Truth about Sickness and Healing" is a book that is hard to put aside once you start reading it. As each page is turned, a new layer of understanding reveals itself.

This is a book that I feel compelled to read over and over again. It is one of those rare works that with each reading, brings a new awareness and perspective on the message that the author, along with his guiding influences, brings.

I would sincerely recommend "The Truth about Sickness and Healing" to absolutely everyone, and am eagerly awaiting any sequels that Donald McDowall feels compelled to materialise!
