Ten years later, Arlene has kept her promises, but an old schoolmate has recently turned up asking questions. 5 out of 5 stars great book.......2007-09-29

This is a refreshing, in your face book that is fun to read, but has some serious heavy stuff that the protagonist is dealing with. I am part way through only, but am going slow and savoring every page.

5 out of 5 stars Great Author.......2007-08-06

I just happened upon this book while perusing the book store aisles. I love reading books set in the South, so I bought it, not knowing what to expect. I absolutely loved it. I loved Joshilyn's writing. If you haven't read her blog, it is just as fun as the book. This is my first book to read from her. I can't wait to read more - I just bought Between, Georgia.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING SOUTHERN STORY AND WRITER!.......2007-07-19

Joshilyn Jackson is the best thing to happen to Southern fiction in a coon's age! If the book didn't have a story I'd still beg my friends to read it just to be entertained by her amazing writing and prose! But what an extraordinary story Jackson has crafted for the reader! When its quirky protagonist, Arlene (Lena), who ran away from her hometown and family after high school, is forced to go home to "literally" face her ghosts and visit her dysfunctional family after a ten year absence, you'll feel like you are in her skin experiencing all the emotions of taking Burr, her precious African American boyfriend,(Gotta love this guy!) home to meet the bigoted folks in the small Alabama town of Possett. This book is a thriller on top of everything else! Throughout you are wondering where the heck is the body or if the victim disappeared or did he really die? And believe me a part of you will be hoping this despicable character did die a slow and painful death! But another part of you will be so concerned about the killer being found out and sent to jail, you're hoping he walked away. When you reach the surprise ending of this book and discover the truth, which I can assure you will be in a couple of days because it's impossible to put this book down, you will love the book all the more! I believe Jackson has written the best example of unconditional love I've personally ever read in a novel! The Candidate: A Novel

4 out of 5 stars underappreciated debut.......2007-07-16

I eschew Chick Lit, and I hesitate about potentially melodramatic thrillers. Fortunately, this is neither. Ms. Jackson has created full, complex and sympathetic (if not always likeable) characters with comprehensible motives. In so many ways, this is a story about family, loyalties and the things you will do for someone you love. Funny, serious and remarkably, not schmaltzy or overwrought, Ms. Jackson has crafted a real, if not politically correct, depiction of adolescent sexuality and expection.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Writing!!!.......2007-07-06

I picked up this book the other day and finished it in two sittings - if I hadn't had to get off the airplane, it would have been only one. This is the most interesting, well written book I have read in years. Joshilyn Jackson creates a totally believable set of southern characters and all the uniqueness that goes along with them. There is such a depth of emotion and thought and the plot provides enough twists to keep even the most stawart critic of pacing happy. I thoroughly enjoyed this book - immediately bought the next - which I am reading now, and can't wait for her next.

Book Description

Chief Justice Roy Moore believes the state must acknowledge the moral principles on which America was founded and that it is not illegal to do so. While the separation of church and state may be a credible and legitimate tenet, it has been largely misconstrued and abused during the last forty years.

Moore was sworn to uphold the Constitution of the United States. His critics, both within conservative circles and without, have maintained that he violated the law by disobeying the order of a federal judge to remove a monument of the Ten Commandments. But Moore brilliantly argues that those who have ordered him to violate his oath have, in fact, broken the law.

So Help Me God will articulate why he believes elected and appointed government officials have the right and the obligation to acknowledge God as the foundation of American government and jurisprudence.

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps past the point of no return, but a timely book........2007-04-03

To those who believe in Jesus and familar with the history of our America will understand this book.

To those who do not believe in Jesus and care little about our nation's history will hate this book, just as Jesus was hated.

America has become pluralistic. A nation of many gods and idolotry. We worship anything and everything but the one and only God of Abraham, the Alpha and Omega, the great I am and Lord of the universe. We refuse to worship God Almighty because of pride and fear of rules. The liberal mindset of America today has violated the 2nd commandment -- thou shall not have make a graven image (idolotry). We have made a god to suit ourself, created our own rules and removed the once understood 10 commandments. Then we wonder why our country has so many problems with crime and immorality. We have forgot from where we came.

[...] Where will you go when you die? Are you Good enough to go to heaven?

5 out of 5 stars crystal clear..........2007-01-03

Thank you, Judge Moore for your uncompromising stand in regard to following the Constitution, and the rule of law. It's so easy these days to compromise, and take the easy path. It's refreshing to see a man with backbone and courage, who counts the cost, and still does the right thing! You present your case explaining the foundations of the Constitution and rule of law with crystal clarity. You're truly an inspiration. In the ages to come, we will find Judge Moore hanging out with Jefferson, Washington, Adams...and the rest of our great nation's founders.

5 out of 5 stars The State is the Church for Secular Humanist Liberals.......2006-11-08

In Alabama Judge Moore was not allowed to acknowledge the Judeo-Christian God and His ten commandments as being the foundation for our laws, something that is easily demonstrable and clearly our heritage. Judge Moore simply exposed the hypocrisy of a judicial system that acknowledges the Judeo-Christian God by opening in prayer and swearing oaths on a Bible, but prohibits acknowledging God in our historical foundation for law as he did. Judge Moore further demonstrated their logically fallacious reasoning in that they would not allow him to display the commandments, citing the establishment clause, but they refused to define the key word "religion" in this clause. So in effect, they decided that he violated a clause that they were unwilling to define. In doing so Judge Thompson actually stated that he found what Judge Moore did "religiously offensive." How ironic considering Thompson would not even define the word.

Simply put, every law and liberty upon which this country was founded is based on the Judeo-Christian ethic. The secular humanist liberal progressives do not want the American public to recognize that. They point to a few secular oriented statements, but fail to point out that the great preponderance of the evidence points toward biblical foundations for our laws and liberties. Facts like, 1/3 of the quotes in the books and papers written by founding fathers are Bible verses, that 52 of the 55 were regular in church attendance, and that the prolific use of references to God in official documents points to the fact that their view of the establishment clause was far different than the secularist of today that wishes to ban all such reference. Even the Declaration of Independence that established our liberty to be an independent nation states that our rights come from the Creator and because of that they are unalienable (absolute, not awarded by human power, not transferable to another power, and incapable of repudiation). This knowledge interferes with the humanist agenda to change laws and liberties as we humans progress to a so-called higher form of liberal society by casting off the shackles of these Creator endowed rights. But of course this is anarchy, for there are no humanistic standards for right and wrong that can be agreed upon by millions of discordant people each serving their own self-interest. Outside of the words of a revelatory God such as we find in the Bible nothing can be said to be inherently right or wrong. Furthermore, concepts like separation of church and state, freedom of speech, rule of law, juvenile restrictions, bearing false witness, sanctity of life, and marriage, are in and of themselves biblical concepts. They flow from and through that particular belief system.

The secular humanistic viewpoint is also hypocritical since it is itself a religious belief system. As it has been aptly said, there can be no separation of church and state for the secular humanist, for the state is their church. The establishment clause prohibits government interference with the free exercise of religion. By banning all acknowledgement of God by government officials, even when it is based on clear historical reference, the government is interfering. Even a world famous atheist that recently converted to theism because of the powerful argument to design from the plethora of discoveries in genetics and molecular cell biology says the liberal activist judges in the U.S. have interpreted the constitution the wrong way. Antony Flew said "the Supreme Court has utterly misinterpreted the clause in the Constitution about not establishing a religion: misunderstanding it as imposing a ban on all official reference to religion." Although a theist, he is only barely so. This guy hopes there is not an afterlife and does not like any organized religions (including Christianity), which makes him an especially credible witness to what is going on in this country.

The facts are clear, there is a faction that is currently trying to establish secular humanism as our national religion, and they are using state agency to do so. Will the American populace tolerate the complete secularization of society through government supported, communistic social policy dependency and its associated philosophical indoctrination into the state sponsored religion of secular humanism? Liberals don't want you to know that behind all the smoke and mirrors of political rhetoric and banter, this is the true battle raging in 21st century America.

Are our laws and liberties going to be subject to the whims of secular humanist progressives, or shall they remain in the domain of the constitution and its amendments as set forth with the original intent of the framers? We stand at a crossroads as we begin the 21st century. Is America going to become the brave new world of the liberal with all the moral norms of the jungle, or are we going to be a constitutional republic founded upon biblical principles, the same principles that made this nation great for its first 200 years. This is the generation that must choose. Read Roy's book, it is an eye opener, but don't expect those of the secular humanist persuasion to give it a good review.

5 out of 5 stars Judge Moore for Supreme Court.......2005-11-08

Wow, finally the whole story. It is hard to believe that men with as much courage, backbone, and strong morality still exist in America. This, folks, is the story of a modern American HERO. Nowadays, true heroes are ignored, blacklisted, put in jail, harassed, made fun of, and purposely misunderstood. Moore is no exception, as this story points out. In the meantime, I will be helping this man become the next governor of Alabama.

Book Description

Nate Shaw's father was born under slavery. Nate Shaw was born into a bondage that was only a little gentler. At the age of nine, he was picking cotton for thirty-five cents an hour. At the age of forty-seven, he faced down a crowd of white deputies who had come to confiscate a neighbor's crop. His defiance cost him twelve years in prison. This triumphant autobiography, assembled from the eighty-four-year-old Shaw's oral reminiscences, is the plain-spoken story of an "over-average" man who witnessed wrenching changes in the lives of Southern black people -- and whose unassuming courage helped bring those changes about.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Thanks For The Memories, Nate.......2005-02-23

This is a timeless classic, and not just among memoirs, because the subject was a great American---a man who "had no get-back in him." Nate Shaw (real name Ned Cobb) had an amazing memory, and also an acute understanding of the post-Civil War rural South. The rhythm of the seasons, work routines, knowledge of livestock, nature and people too, combine for a profound view of a vanished America. (If you want to really know about mules, Ned's the man.) But Ned didn't just observe, he worked with the Alabama Sharecroppers' Union and defended powerless friends, serving 12 years in prison for his pains. This activism sets him apart from Kas Maine, a South African sharecropper to whom he's been compared in recent years. The earthy dialect wears out some readers, but otherwise "All God's Dangers" is compelling from start to end. Writers from Wendell Berry to Pete Daniel praise both man and book, while John Beecher's "In Egypt Land" is a moving poetic rendition of Ned's story. R. Kelley, "Hammer & Hoe" vividly recreates 1930s Alabama; on Kas Maine, see C. Van Onselen, "The Seed Is Mine." But Ned tells about his world far better than the others. In living, then narrating, a life of great struggle lived with great dignity, Ned Cobb performed a signal service---for all of us. We are in your debt!

5 out of 5 stars Family, Race, Class and Farming in Alabama.......2005-01-06

In the middle of Rosengarten's book, truly a masterpiece of oral history memoir making, Nate Shaw says "all God's dangers ain't a white man." This would seem truly a remarkable thing for a black man who spent over a decade in an Alabama prison to say, but as a farmer growing cotton in Alabama during the first half of the twentieth century it quickly makes sense once he explains it. Shaw's story of his chaffing under his good for nothing father's roof; his growing prosperity as share cropper and than as a yeoman farmer; his hucksterism when dealing with violent and hostile whites attempting to cheat him; the defense of fellow small farmers that got him thrown in jail during the Great Depression; and his takes on the science of farming, race relations, the American class system and his own life experiences show Shaw to be a master story teller and Rosengarten and master interviewer. The combination of these two was absolute dynamite.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Nate........2001-01-05

Nate Shaw was the father of my Uncle Oscar Turner's best friend. His real name was Nate Cobb and the family of the son, Lorraine, is prominent in the Middletown, Ohio ghetto.

The author has done a masterful job of illustrating how greatness was thrust upon him. Nate never set out to become a hero, only to protect his own dignity and provide for his children.

I do not believe that there is a better book for teaching about the lies of 20th century sharecroppers. Theirs is an overlooked legacy.

5 out of 5 stars A Natural For Oprah's Book Club.......2000-04-06

Ted Rosengarten is a masterful writer. All God's Dangers is an amazing undertaking that brings Nate Shaw's story to life. After a few pages, it's almost as if you can hear Nate talking. A must read for anyone interested in history and anyone who wants to learn how a book should be written. And Rosengarten's Tombee, if it can be found, is another must read.

    Book Description

On March 21, 1932, a tornado hit the central part of Alabama, causing death and destruction. This one was designated as the deadliest to have hit Alabama in history. There were two that hit that week, the second being March 27. The death toll from the first one was reported as being 214. The second one brought the total deaths to over 400. The first one that hit about 6:30 PM took my Father, Mother, and five siblings, leaving the four youngest of ten children orphaned. Witnesses who saw our house when it hit said the house was taken up in the air about fifty feet, then exploded. The family was gathered in the room used as a family gathering place, and my Father uttered the last words anyone heard him speak before he was killed: "My God!! It's a cyclone". At that time tornadoes were called cyclones. When the house exploded, the family was scattered and the youngest girl, Velma, was blown back in the direction from which the tornado came. She was found about two lengths of a football field, and across a creek. The only garment she had on was the cuff of a sleeve from the dress she had been wearing. My Father was found some distance from where the house had stood, and the rest closer together. Only three boys and one girl, the youngest, survived. The four of us were placed in an ambulance at one time and taken to the hospital. After leaving the Vaughn Memorial Hospital, we were supposed to have been adopted by a family in Selma, Alabama. They had only wanted the youngest boy and girl, but were told they had to take all four or none. It was agreed, but later, the oldest boy was sent away, and about a year later I was sent away as well.

                Book Description

In such stunning novels of crime and character as Die Upon a Kiss, Sold Down the River, and A Free Man of Color, Benjamin January tracked down killers through the sensuous, atmospheric, dangerously beautiful world of Old New Orleans. Now, in this new novel by bestselling author Barbara Hambly, he follows a trail of murder from illicit back alleys to glittering mansions to a dark place where the oldest and deadliest secrets lie buried . . .

                Wet Grave

It’s 1835 and the relentless glare of the late July sun has slowed New Orleans to a standstill. When Hesione LeGros--once a corsair’s jeweled mistress, now a raddled hag--is found slashed to death in a shanty on the fringe of New Orleans’s most lawless quarter, there are few to care. But one of them is Benjamin January, musician and teacher. He well recalls her blazing ebony beauty when she appeared, exquisitely gowned and handy with a stiletto, at a demimonde banquet years ago.

Who would want to kill this woman now--Hessy, they said, would turn a trick for a bottle of rum--had some quarrelsome “customer” decided to do away with her? Or could it be one of the sexual predators who roamed the dark and seedy streets? Or--as Benjamin comes to suspect--was her killer someone she knew, someone whose careful search of her shack suggests a cold-blooded crime? Someone whose boot left a chillingly distinctive print . . .

His inquiries at taverns, markets, and slave dances reveal little about “Hellfire Hessy” since her glory days in Barataria Bay, once the lair of gentlemen pirates. Then the murder is swept from his mind by the delivery of a crate filled with contraband rifles--and yet another telltale boot print left by its claimant. When a murder swiftly follows, Ben and Rose Vitrac, the woman he loves, fear the workings of a serpentine mind and a treacherous plot: one only they can hope to thwart in time.

All too soon they are fugitives of color in the stormy bayous and marshes of slave-stealer country, headed for smugglers’ haunts and sinister plantations, where one false step could be their last toward a... Wet Grave.

"Barbara Hambly continues to delight us with her sensuous evocation of life in New Orleans in the turbulent era of the 1800s."
THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW

"An atmospheric, gripping tale of New Orleans."
                   THE BOSTON GLOBE

"Hambly's sixth novel... builds to hurricane force.... When the author hits her stride, the tension ratchets up to an almost unbearable level.... Hambly's strong and unusual series tracking a largely unexplored period of American history should continue to please fans and attract new readers."
                   PUBLISHERS WEEKLY

"[Hambly's] depiction of New Orleans' contradictions -- beauty and squalor side by side -- is almost visceral.... As with any good historical mystery, we are at least as captivated by the characters, dialogue, and environment as we are with the mystery itself. Benjamin January, a free black man in a society that regards black men as second class, is an original, exciting character. Series fans will be thrilled with his new adventure and will eagerly anticipate the next."
                   BOOKLIST

"Hambly expertly weaves together strands from New Orleans history in this memorable tale continuing her compelling work on the complex social strictures and slave horrors of antebellum New Orleans.... It's bang-up entertainment in a format that's faithful to history."
                   THE TIMES-PICAYUNE (NEW ORLEANS)

"Her colorful characters vividly step out of the pages and into the reader's consciousness."
                   ALFRED HITCHCOCK MYSTERY MAGAZINE

"The January historical mysteries are some of the best nineteenth century tales on the market regardless of genre.... Insightfully top quality."

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous read for history buffs and/or mystery fans.......2007-03-25

This novel is maybe not the best book in this series but even a "slightly below average" Hambly is better reading than many other authors. This book features vivid imagery, well-written characters, and a plot that really draws the reader in. As usual in this series, Hambly really brings New Orleans in the 1830's to life. I can't wait to get the next book in the series!!

4 out of 5 stars Oooo. The best Ben Jauary ending yet........2007-02-19

I won't give away the ending -- I'll just say that I found this book to be very satisfying. The plot twists and turns were unexpected and I didn't see them coming. After reading all the books in this series, I had begun to "know" the characters and how they could be expected to act -- this book presented new character dimensions in behavior and perspective.
Great read, I can't wait to crack it open again next year!

5 out of 5 stars Overloading the Praise Wagon.......2005-02-06

Can there ever be too much praise for a writer? Well, if there is such a thing, Barbara Hambly is going to be in trouble. WET GRAVE is a historical mystery/adventure novel that takes places in New Orleans, the barrier islands of Barataria Bay and the riverfront plantations of Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana.

Living amongst the gens de couleur libre (free people of color) in the early 1800's, former slave Benjamin January is suffering through the summer doldrums of New Orleans, while the Creole elite have fled to cooler spots on the planet and the uncivilized Americans drink and brawl their way through the dog days of summer. Amidst the heat, humidity and carnivorous mosquitoes, the former mistress of a long dead pirate captain is murdered at the same time as a rich white planter. The authorities have no problem investigating the murder of the white man, but have callously ignored the murder of a poor, displaced black prostitute. Ben, as usual, takes it upon himself to ferret out Hessy's killer and finds himself caught between a slave rebellion and a hurricane - literally!

Surrounded by women, Ben is also caught up in the mini-dramas of his mother, his sister, and his companion, Rose, who all look to him for support during difficult times. Fortunately for Ben, Rose is more independent than his female relatives and rides out the adventure at his side. But even his sister, Dominique, surprises him, when she demonstrates a depth of character and surprising fortitude.

Barbara Hambly delivers everything you would ever want to experience in a novel - mystery, suspense, adventure, and romance - all in a flawlessly researched package. WET GRAVE is the sixth installment of the Benjamin January mystery series. Although it is the first of Hambly's works that I have read, I was not deterred by starting in the middle of the series. In fact, it just whets my appetite to go back and start the series from the beginning. WET GRAVE is excellent fiction supported by excellent historical research. (RAW Rating: 4.5)

5 out of 5 stars Beware Hurrican Season.......2004-07-29

Hesione LeGros's murder as a poor, drunken prostitute is far removed from her younger days as the beautiful, fiery mistress of a pirate captain. The city guard is busy with the death of a white plantation owner, so it is left to Benjamin January to investigate during the grueling summer heat in New Orleans. But January's inquiries quickly take a backseat when disaster strikes closer to home. Soon, Benjamin and his sweetheart Rose are caught up in a tangle of conspiracies - gun running, slave revolt and pirate treasure. Forced to flee New Orleans, they work to untangle the many mysteries in the surrounding plantations and swamps.

This is the sixth book in Hambly's series about 1830s New Orleans and Benjamin January, well-educated freeman and seeker of justice. Hambly provides enough of a history recap for readers new to the series. The rich descriptions put you directly on the streets of the tarnished jewel that is New Orleans. Hambly is as effective as ever in her depictions of the many colliding cultures, the contrast of the lives of the haves and the have-nots, and the heartbreaking injustices and indignities suffered because of race.

One of the best things about this series is that the characters and relationships continue to grow and change. Benjamin and his friends and family are all complex characters. The villains however, seem to be almost over-the-top evil. The pacing steams along steadily until the climax, which is riotous barrage of action. Hambly does an excellent job of wrapping all of her plot threads together. I have one minor quibble - so many things were wrapped up, I'd be afraid for the series if I didn't know that the next book was already out.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best historical mystery novelists around........2004-02-08

This entry in the Benjamein January series is another winner. It does start out a little slow, but Barbara needs time to set the scene for her books. She immerses her readers so completely in her era and genre, that it's sometimes hard to surface to the modern world once beginning her books. Even though the book starts a bit slow, it builds to explosive force about half-way through and doesn't let up right until the end. Ms. Hambly's writing is absolutely dazzling, and Benjamin and his Rose are so real, that it's hard to believe that it's only fiction. The book takes place in the summer of 1835 and the main part of the action is set in some of the islands located around New Orleans. In it Ben and Rose are trying to stop a slave revolt. As they both know, everyone loses if slaves revolt. In the book we see gun runners, pirates, a hurricane and some old diseases that no longer are such a threat to humanity. This is a magically rich and poignant tale, and one of the strongest entries in this already strong series. Each book seems better than the one preceeding.

3 out of 5 stars Not his best........1999-08-10

Peter Corris has a good, lean, tight style. He does not rely on cheap plot devices. Unfortunately, Wet Graves is not his best, although it is more easily found in the USA than others. Try any of his other Cliff Hardy books before you try Wet Graves. Hint: you can find his other books at secondhand bookstores (Sorry, Amazon).

4 out of 5 stars Cliff Hardy the Australian Elvis Cole, Excellent !.......1998-12-09

Wet Graves is only one of two Peter Corris novels that I have read because many of his books are out of print. The main character, Cliff Hardy private enquiry agent as they are called in "OZ" is very similar to Robert Crais's Elvis Cole. Both have a dry sense of humor and live with cats.Unfortunately Cliff does'nt have a Joe Pike to back him up. (Joe Pike types are outlawed in Australia) Mr. Corris is an excellent writer, he develops characters and his books have good plots. His writing is (IMHO) not quite up to Robert Crais level but few are.

                4 out of 5 stars The new hard-boiled detective........1997-09-28

Enjoyed this book. The newest hard-boiled detective, in the tradition of the Dashiell Hammett books. Great book for anyone who is interested in Mysteries and Australia. Takes place in the wonderful city of Sydney. Great action and adventure with a wonderful story.
