Book Description
Sports agent Myron Bolitar is poised on the edge of the big time. So is Christian Steele, a rookie quarterback and Myron's prized client. But when Christian gets a phone call from a former girlfriend, a woman who everyone, including the police, believes is dead, the deal starts to go sour. Trying to unravel the truth about a family's tragedy, a woman's secret, and a man's lies, Myron is up against the dark side of his business—where image and talent make you rich, but the truth can get you killed.
In novels that crackle with wit and suspense, Edgar Award winner Harlan Coben has created one of the most fascinating and complex heroes in suspense fiction—Myron Bolitar—a hotheaded, tenderhearted sports agent who grows more and more engaging and unpredictable with each page-turning appearance.

Meeting Myron Bolitar (and getting SCHMOOZED in the process!).......2007-09-11
Picking this up, I was convinced that I'd have the satisfaction that I had when I read "No 2nd Chance," by Coben. I'd been thoroughly impressed, and I couldn't WAIT to read Coben once again. Well, quite frankly I walked away from this feeling like I've been screwed! I thought this really sucked. The funny thing remains: I'm still willing to give Harlan Coben his fair chance and read him once more. In the opening line, Coben had me hooked with this, "Otto Burke, the Wizard of Schmooze, raised his game another level." Hey, I was hooked! So what changed my mind? Somewhere along the line, I think that Harlan Coben himself turned into a "SCHMOOZE artist," and most people happened to love this.
I think that a lot of this makes for a great story. A lost loved one, a phone call in the middle of the night, and suspects EVERYWHERE! A horrifying rape enters the picture, and the heat is turned up a notch. A hot rookie prospect is drilled in the middle of all this while simply trying to get his career under way. What's worse? That star rookie who stands out on the field just very well may be a suspect. Ok, check that...HE IS! That actually makes it quite interesting. What pukes this up, and ultimately disappoints me is that Coben resorts to smut material to make up a plot. Now, I know that sex sells, and Harlan Coben is certainly no Danielle Steele, but come on! I'm not interested in reading about the next Hustler magazine in the latest bestselling paperback. I'm just going to say that up front. There are more interesting things in this life, and I was shaking my head through a lot of this. The sad thing was, I really didn't feel that the ending was all that predictable. It had all the hints of something great.
In the end, I'm still willing to give Harlan Coben another go round. "No 2nd Chance" was just too darn good! And personally, this time I thought I got screwed. Or SCHMOOZED! Take your pick. I don't have to like it. And I could care less that DAN BROWN has recently endorsed some of Coben's latest work. I guess in keeping good company with the likes of Brown, you might be considered for no integrity, but I don't know. I just don't know. I DO know that I'm still up for another shot at this guy. I didn't hate this offering. I just hated the way it was put out there. Just give me some time, and I'm hoping that my next Coben read will make this all a simple, distant memory.
Deal breaker.......2007-07-27
I loved this book and all of the other ones that I read by this author they are the type of books that you can not put down.
Deal Breaker.......2007-07-27
My first book by this author and truely enjoyed it. Very suspenseful and full of twists and turns. Highly recommended.
Good one...........2007-07-11
After reading a later novel in the series, I decided, I had to go back and start at the beginning. I am glad I did, and I will go forth and read the next one....
Leisure Story.......2007-06-25
I listened to the audiobook of this story. The narrator was great-very funny when speaking as Myron Bolitar. The story was just okay but the character of Myron Bolitar made it interesting. The audiobook is probaly better to listen than just reading the book

Book Description
This is a book about men. Not all men, just emotionally unhealthy men. The ones who make you question, "Is it him or is it me? Am I making too big a deal out of this? I try to tell him how I feel, but he says I'm overreacting or needy or it's all my fault."
Relationships are hard work, but how hard should they be? When do you know you are struggling too hard to make a relationship succeed?
Deal Breakers is about getting out of this "relationship purgatory" -- where the present is unfulfilling and the future is the only thing you can hope for. But there is no magic future. If he won't work on problems today, it's unlikely they'll ever be resolved. And passively hoping for change will only cost you years of depression or expensive therapy.
Dr. Bethany Marshall is here to remind women that relationships -- like business relationships -- are deals. In the business world, a deal breaker is the one nonnegotiable term that, if not agreed to, means the deal is off. But in the world of relationships, identifying your deal breaker can be much more promising, as it holds out the possibility of helping you to understand where the relationship has gone wrong, what needs to be done in order to make it better, and when to walk away because you're doing more work than him to fix it.
A deal breaker is a boundary that smart people set for themselves because they know that falling in love can make them do stupid things. Through case studies, deal breaker scenarios, and suggested courses of action, Deal Breakers expertly guides frustrated women. By defining your deal breaker, you hold all the power to create the happiness you deserve.
Customer Reviews:
Read While the Pain is Fresh.......2007-09-16
I read this book over the weekend. I was hurting, I wanted help and a friend had recommended this one. Although I already knew the relationship was a deal breaker from the gate and it was already over, I wanted to learn something about the mess I'd gotten myself into, and self-help books can definitely open the eyes. Love may be blind, but our eyes are widest open after we've just broken up with someone. That's the best time to read this book. Strike while the pain is fresh.
Dr. Marshall looks at 5 deal breaker categories, and articulates in plain English the problems and trouble signs. She also presents personal stories (you'll be able to relate) and deal breaker scenarios that she breaks down into "work on it" or "walk away." If your relationship shows up in these pages, you've got yourself a deal breaker. I find great comfort and relief in recognizing my situation on the page--if it's common enough to be included in a mass market publication, then there are a lot of folks out there in the same situation as me! Misery loves company? No; I'm just relieved to know I'm neither crazy nor alone in this. She also gives first impressions, warning signs, more warning signs, even more warning... you get the picture. For self-reflection, she includes the section "Who chooses this type of man?" There's also a chapter called "Getting off the merry-go-round" and 11 signs that you're on one. The book rounds out with tips on negotiating a new deal and breaking the deal when you have to.
This book helped me and I'm glad I read it right at the end of the relationship, because I was able to quickly recall the ex's hurtful behavior. After awhile, this won't hurt anymore, but if I forget what I went through, I'll do it again with a different man. That's why I say read while the pain is fresh, highlight and underline heavily, and make or break the deal.
Wow!.......2007-09-06
I love this book! Another new bestseller which I highly recommend - How to be a Super Hot Woman: 339 Tips to Make Every Man Fall in Love with You and Every Woman Envy You
These are great books for smart women!
Tons of Great Information.......2007-09-04
I highly recommend this book. This book not only defines the different type of people you may be involved with but goes one step further in telling you why you may be attracting these individuals. Marshall's writing style is easy to understand and not all Phdish. A valuable for book for anyone who isn't in a great relationship.
Thought Provoking But Not Enough Substance.......2007-07-20
This is an interesting book that gives the reader some basic ideas for evaluating an existing, past, or future relationship. However, it did not offer much in terms of substance or guidance. One personal benefit for me was that the book helped me to show more appreciation for my current relationship. Thankfully, there are currently no past or present "deal breakers" in my marriage. For that reason alone I think the book was well worth the price.
Model Self-Help Book.......2007-07-14
Deal Breakers could be a model for a class on writing a self-help book. It's so nice to find a book that has a theme and a focus, yet entertains and provides useful, down-to-earth recommendations. Author Marshall, a psychoanalyst, obviously draws on her professional training and experience. But she presents her ideas vividly with stories and examples that relate directly to the points she wants to make (I wish more books did that).
I actually want to recommend this book to someone who is in a same-sex relationship, so I wish the author had made some reference to gay and lesbian couples.
Marshall identifies one deal breaker that relates directly to my own career consulting business: Be wary of a man who can't seem to find work or pay the bills. Many of my own clients report frustration with spouses who refuse to contribute their share, e.g., "He's in the arts and he can't handle the stress of a regular job."
I want to say, "Gimme a break." But instead I suggest seeing a counselor.
Or let's say he gets a dream job in Chicago but she won't leave her friends, family and terrific job in Houston. I send these couples to a relationship specialist. It's impossible to compromise: one partner will always lose something big. You can't always go around the corner and find a great job. One career columnist actually wrote that boyfriends are easier to replace than good jobs. I stay away from that one!
And as a career consultant, I find myself drawing parallels between relationship and career deal breakers. The questions and the types might be different. But clients often have a hard time answering the question, "Is it me or is it them?" And I recommend extending the notion of "deal breaker" for setting boundaries with colleagues, clients and friends as well as relationship partners.

Laughter & Lessons.......2007-08-26
I read the book cover to cover in one sitting - laughing out loud & relating either my own/or my friends similar dating challenges. Kim's funny and inspiring wicked wit is hilarious & honest as she shares her past personal experiences while also addressing the important life lesson that we deserve the best & to settle for nothing/no one less. A book you can enjoy over & over again !
Keepin' everyone real.......2007-04-24
What an exhilirating journey. It hit so many highlights of relationships and dating that you take a step back and re-assess yourself, because you don't want to be another chapter in this book. It is a primer for men and women about truth and honesty. Ever thought of stretching the truth? where does the stretch end? Hopefully not with you in this book. The insights allow everyone to "sift through the dirt and quickly spot a gem", even if rough. And in the end, isn't that what everyone is looking for?
Pay Attention and Read Closely and Read Again!.......2007-03-31
A quick and funny read loaded with excellent advice. Like all good comedians, Kim Samuels is a close observer of human behavior. She sizes up, qualifies, and reminds us to follow our instincts even if we can't articulate it as well as she can! As with her past book, Kim is an entertaining and graphic writer. No punches pulled here. But underneath the colorful and dead-on dating deal breakers is the same truth found in the book Blink. We need these reminders to follow our immediate and gut reactions. Women, take heed!
Every woman should read this book, dating or not!.......2007-03-01
You will not be able to put this book down! You will read it from cover to cover in one sitting and then keep going back to your favorite parts. Samuels has done a remarkable job describing, in vivid detail and with a wicked/keen wit, the real life challenges of dating in this modern world. She says the things that all women think -- but never dare to express -- about men and dating. Best of all, at the core of the book is a strong message to women: put yourself first, don't doubt yourself, follow your instincts. Even if you're in a relationship or married, there is a lot to learn from Samuels about living your life as you want it to be.

Book Description
Meredith Mitchell and her long-time friend Inspector Alan Markby planned to do something special for the weekend--just to break the routine. As it happened, it was murder that changed their plans...
Call the Dead Again
Meredith is hesitant about picking up the hitchhiker on a deserted road outside Bamford, yet with darkness approaching, she just can't leave the young girl alone. But when the stranger is evasive about why she's headed for the beautiful Tudor home of a prominent lawyer, Meredith begins to feel uneasy. And when the lawyer is found dead the next morning, Meredith fears her first instincts were right.
Soon the intrepid sleuths team up to uncover the ghosts of the past and mysteries of the present--exposing some scandalous secrets that drove someone to mischief, madness...and murder.
Customer Reviews:
Superb Cotswold police procedural.......1999-05-31
While driving home, Meredith Mitchell picks up a hitchhiker whom she drops off near the home of European VIP Andrew Penhallow and his family. Meredith soon enjoys the comfort of being with her lover, police superintendent Alan Markby. The next day, Andrew's wife finds her spouse murdered. Suspicion immediately falls on the hitchhiker.
Alan conducts an official investigation while Meredith makes her own inquiries. Apparently, the much traveled Andrew had two families with the hitchhiker being his neglected daughter from the other side of the tracks. However, were Kate's feelings strong enough to murder her father? Alan leans in that direction, but Meredith thinks otherwise and plans to sell her lover with a different scenario.
CALL THE DEAD AGAIN, the eleventh Cotswold novel, is an interesting British police procedural that, like its predecessors, adds elements of an amateur sleuth to the tale. The story line moves rather quickly, only slowing down when Alan and Meredith are doing anything except sleuthing. The characters are warm and cozy. Of major interest is the victim, who dies in the first quarter of the novel, but the revelations about his life spin the story line forward. Ann Granger provides genre fans with a fine entry to the Mitchell and Markby Cotswold series.
Harriet Klausner
Enjoyed as much as the others.......1999-05-28
You should enjoy the book even if you haven't read any of the earlier entries in the series. Ann Granger will gently fill you in on what has gone before. Marby and Meredith's relationship moves forward by the tiniest of steps, so you won't have missed much. The murder weapon is interesting. The mystery unravels nicely. You won't be sheltered from the hard facts of life, but you won't have your nose rubbed in them, either. Personally, I think every adulterer who thinks s/he is going to get away with it should read this book. It fits the old saying about being sure that your sin will find you out. (That's not giving away much. It's obvious early on that adultery is the root of the matter.) I've always enjoyed learning that an author whose works I like shares an interest. I'm pleased that Ms. Granger chose to mention *Sprig Muslin* of all of the late Georgette Heyer's many regency romances, because that's my favorite of her books. (From the description of the cover, I'm sure that mine is a different edition, though.) For readers who are not familiar with Heyer's work, she also wrote mysteries. "Penhallow", the name of one of the characters in this book, is the title of one of Heyer's mysteries. I really, really, hate the fact that so many hardcover books have boring or ugly dustjackets compared to paperback covers. I'm pleased that this mystery has a dustjacket that fits the mood of the book. [Note to the publisher: Given the title of the book, the last line of the quoted epitaph should probably be "call the dead" instead of "all the dead".] Ann E. Nichols
