Book Description
"In this ninth installment in the Hornblower series, the incomparable Horatio Hornblower, recently knighted and settled in as squire of the village of Smallbridge, has been designated commodore of his own squadron of ships, led by the two-decker Nonsuch and bound for the Baltic. It is 1812, and Hornblower has been ordered to do anything and everything possible, diplomatically and militarily, to protect the Baltic trade and to stop the spread of Napoleon's empire into Sweden and Russia. Though he has set sail a hero, one misstep may ruin his chances of ever becoming an admiral. Hostile armies, seductive Russian royalty, nautical perils such as ice-bound bays, assassins in the imperial palace--Hornblower must conquer all before he can return home to his beloved new wife and son, as his instructions are to sacrifice every man and ship under his command rather than surrender ground to Napoleon."

A Wonderful Friendship .......2006-09-09
This is the next Hornblower chronologically, it was not the next one written. Now that the series is completed it makes sense to read it as Hornblower's career progresses in the Royal Navy.
The whole series is a pleasure to read full of action and adventure; with enough time for a little romance.
Get acquainted with one of the most popular characters in modern literature.
After reading this you will be back for more. And that is a wonderful thing.
The destiny of the world.......2006-08-04
This was my first introduction to Horatio Hornblower, and I'm hooked...couldn't put this down, or any of the next two either.
Hornblower is made a commodore and given a small fleet, and sent to the Baltic to ensure the safety of maritime trade. The local threat to British shipping is dealt with in short order, but the diplomatic situation quickly becomes complicated as the neutrality of Sweden and Russia are threatened. Will the Sweden be dragged into the war on the side of Napoleon, will Russia submit to French mastery of Europe?
Hornblower has the opportunity to dine with the czar and participate in the seige of Riga. By the end of the novel, his health is spent, the tide of the war is turned, and you care intensely about the next chapter of the saga.
Russian politics and naval strategy.......2004-02-29
In Commodore, Forester takes our hero to the Baltic Sea to intervene in the war between the Russians and Napoleon. Now on the top half of the Captains list, Hornblower is given command of a small squadron of ships and sent north in as much of a political gambit as a naval one. There are no real naval threats to Hornblower's fleet, a few coastal raiders on British shipping, but the one they find is easily dispatched. Forester spends time detailing the use of bomb vessels, ungainly ships with large mortars in the center. They are used to shell and destroy a ship in a harbor and enemy positions on shore. When Napoleon attacks Russia he sends one army north towards St. Petersburg along the eastern most end of the Baltic, and of course Commodore Hornblower is there to save the day and negotiate a switch of sides by the Prussians. It's a little short on naval lore and a little long on period politics. A contrived dalliance with a Russian lady gives Hornblower flees, and then typhus. At the time it was written it was pretty unusual to have an adulterous affair in a fiction of this kind. It gives more variety to our understanding of British Naval operations in another area of the world.
Good adventure reading.......2003-10-06
I am sad to see that I am close to the end of Forester's Horatio Hornblower series. I am greatly enjoying this series of novels.
Buy the whole package.......2003-09-18
Start with Midshipman Hornblower and take a vacation. You won't put any book in the series down until you finish them all.
Product Description
From the front flap: Mellowed slightly by life on land, and his love for Lady Barbara, his wife, Hornblower has lost none of the audacity and quick thinking that made his earlier reputation for daring, Rather, he has blended these skills with a subtle diplomatic technique which not only inspires his captains, but also impresses the rulers of Europe, Commodore Hornblower may be a mild, simple man in his own eyes, but on the quarterdeck of a flagship he is Great Britain personified socially, politically and militarily.

Unholy Matrimony
Ask not for whom the wedding bell tolls, it tolls for Judith McMonigle Flynn's son Mike--and the Hillside Manor b&b is packed to the rafters with relatives. However, Mama Judith's unrestrained joy is somewhat dampened when, during the rehearsal dinner downtown, she spies a tuxedo-clad gent tossing a bridal-gowned beauty off the roof of a nearby hotel. Always one to eagerly exclaim "I do!" when offered the opportunity to investigate nefarious deeds, Judith's determination to unveil a killer could put undo stress on her own marital bliss with policeman-hubby Joe. But she remains wedded to her mission--and she's not about to take a honeymoon from amateur sleuthing until she's gotten to the bottom of the homicidal hanky-panky surrounding a match made in hell.

Lacking.......2005-11-23
I have loved almost all Daheim's books, and reading them in no certain order, but this was one I couldn't wait to put down and not recommend. It seems no thought was given to the characters.....they have no real substance to them like in her other books. Judith herself seems like she has lost her gumption along with her wit and is just rambling through this story trying to out-do her hubby in guessing the murderer, even though she denies it. There is no heart in her sleuthing and even Renie seems less like Renie. Even Gertrude was down right annoying and I usually just find her annoyingly funny! Maybe Daheim's heart wasn't into this book when she was writing. It sure shows. If it weren't for Sweetums and Phyliss I would have put the book down.
The Bride Goes Over the Balcony.......2001-04-28
Having read the other 11 books in this series, I was a little disappointed in this one. The book starts out well enough with the wedding of Judith Flynn's son Mike and his long-time girlfriend, Kristen. We have heard a lot about Mike in previous books in the series, but this is the first time he has actually appeared in one. While they are at the rehearsal dinner for Mike's wedding, Judith sees a man in a tux pushing a woman in a bridal gown over a balcony. When her policeman husband Joe is unable to find a body, Judith begins to doubt her sanity. Thereafter we are introduced to a parade of characters, who seem eccentric but somewhat disconnected. Judith, of course, continues her own investigation, trying to stay one step ahead of her husband. The plot is hard to follow and when the killer was revealed I almost didn't care any more. In her attempt to throw out red herrings, author Danheim just makes this book difficult to read.
Getting Worse Instead of Better.......1998-09-03
Mary Daheim's 12th (I think) Bed-and-Breakfast Mystery is a BIG disappointment. I really try to support my fellow Washingtonians when they turn author, buying works which I freely admit are not always first-rate. I enjoy the local color and keep hoping they'll improve if we faithful readers keep them financially afloat. BUT...after a dozen books, Daheim is getting worse, not better, and I am pulling the plug! Wed and Buried lacks suspense, lacks humor, and lacks charm. Sleuth Judith Flynn is more than usually limp and brainless, cop husband Joe is boring and patronizing, and standbys such as Cousin Renie and Obnoxious Mom lack enough buoyancy to keep this leaden tome afloat. A Cozy Mystery, by definition, should have charm and chuckles. If it's played for farce, it needs the kind of wacky realism one recognizes in good screen comedy--real people caricatured to the point of hilarity. If it's played for satire, it requires a dry understated wit. Daheim, by contrast, has created a cartoon version of Luci and Desi--a charmless Desi and a whiny Luci. Cousin Renie repeatedly asks Judith why she's bothering to try to solve the mystery of the dead disk jockey, and long before the last page, I found myself wondering the same thing. Why bother, Judith, to solve this mystery? Why bother, Mary, to WRITE this mystery? Why bother, Dear Reader, to read this mystery? Never again.
Keep them coming!.......1998-04-08
Yes, more please. I have introduced Mary Daheim and her Bed and Breakfast novels to many of my friends. They read and also beg for more. Keep them coming.

Well plotted but too slow for my taste.......2005-07-19
This is my first book by this author, and although I enjoyed the cozy part of this mystery, I just couldn't get into the story. It took way too long for the pace to pick up (like the last 50 pages?) and the rest of the time I had trouble getting into the book.
The "detective" in this series is a woman ("Quill"), an artist who runs an upscale inn in the Ithaca, NY area with the help of her gourmet chef sister Meg. Quill has a reputation for solving mysteries.
This book begins with a group (a generous word considering how small the group is) picketing to stop a developer from moving a Civil War era cemetary. At the same time, there's a big trial about to begin and for not very credible reasons, the judge decides to sequester the jury -- and Quill is talked into giving them rooms at a low rate because it's off season. Suddenly, the inn is filled with people involved with the trial not to mention various townspeople dropping by, including a strong-willed local woman who is set on getting a volunteer police department going. Eventually there's a murder, and then another, and Quill is trying to find the killer because she has little confidence that the local police will be able to (she believes they need her help and are subtly asking for it).
This book ranks low on credibility (the coincidences are truly amazing) and pacing, and high on coziness. If you buy the coincidences, the plotting makes sense. I was not entirely surprised at the perpetrator, but then I read a whole lot of mysteries. I really don't think I'll read more in this series, however -- just not my cup of tea, I like them with a faster pace. If you like cozies, however, you may very well love this series.
A sequestered jury and murder.......2005-02-15
It's the slow season at the Inn of Hemlock Falls. So, Meg and Quill are happy to have the sequestered jury. That is until they get all the requirements for having them stay there. There are only six jurors, the judge, his bodyguard, and the court liaison, but they keep everyone hopping with their demands.
Corliss Hooker is the head of protestors called "Friends of the Dead" They are trying to stop Ferris Rodman, owner of Roncor Construction, from relocating the Civil War cemetery to build a golf course. Then Corliss is found murdered in the cemetery. He is clutching a piece of paper that brings Quill into the investigation.
Quill starts hearing rumors of a large hotel being built in town. She and Marge end up doing some late night investigation to find out more. Plus Marge's ex-husband Boomer is in town. No one even knew she was married before. One morning Marge asks Quill to help her find Boomer as he didn't show up for their meeting. He is apparently dependable to be where he says he will be. Unfortunately they find he's had an "accident" and has been decapitated.
Quill begins to wonder if the two murders are related. She begins digging to try to find the link. She ends up putting herself in danger before unmasking the killer.
I love this series. Meg and Quill are so likeable. I would love to be able to stay at the Inn and get to know everyone in town. It sounds like the type of place you would love to visit, except for all the murders.
Not only are the setting and characters wonderful, the plot and pacing are great too. There are always plenty of suspects so that it is difficult to figure out who the killer is before the author uncovers it through the story. I highly recommend this book.
A great cosy.......2004-11-01
March is normally quiet time for the manager and co-owner of the Inn at Hemlock Falls Sarah "Quill" Quilliam and for her sister co-owner and Chef Meg. However, this year the Inn hosts a sequestered jury working the case of Rocor vs. Meecham. Six jurors, the flamboyant Judge Moody, his bodyguard, and the court liaison are the only guests at the Inn, but this entourage keeps the siblings hopping trying to satisfy their outrageous demands. Meanwhile the town is coping with Corliss Hooker who is going to ridiculous lengths to stop Ferris Rodman, owner of Rocor Construction, from relocating a Civil War Cemetery so that he can build a golf course at its present site.
Soon after Corliss asks to speak with the Judge, Moody is found murdered; Quill is eager to find out who killed him. She hopes it is Ferris Rodman, who is supposedly planning to build an inn to rival that of the sisters. Quill convinces businesswoman Marge Schmidt to break into Rodman's trailer hoping to find dirt on him, but they get caught. Rodman agrees to not press charges and admits he plans to build an inn by the proposed golf course. The next day Marge asks Quill to help her find her ex husband Buddy who was supposed to meet them at the inn, but when they do he has been decapitated. Quill thinks the murders are connected, but struggles to find the missing link.
A "Hemlock Falls" mystery is always a great reading experience and BURIED BY BREAKFAST is no exception. Claudia Bishop writes an enthralling amateur sleuth mystery with so many suspects mostly guests that readers will not guess who the perpetrator is. The siblings and Marge remain solid protagonists in this highly recommended novel and series.
