Brianna Concannon is a woman with a rare gift for creating a home, and she makes use of this talent by running a bed-and-breakfast in a picturesque corner of Ireland. Mystery writer Grayson Thane is an American who grew up in an orphanage and has spent his life alone. A restless wanderer with a painful past, Grayson arrives at Blackthorn Cottage intent only on soaking up the Irish atmosphere and writing his next novel, but he finds far more than he bargained for. The beautiful, calm Brianna soothes his disquiet soul, and in her Grayson finds the home he hadn't realized he needed. Brianna knows that by falling for him, she risks her heart, already bruised and scarred by a young love who left her at the altar. But the yearning to let the American melt the ice around her cold exterior is irresistible. Unless Grayson can let go of his past to forge a future with her, Brianna may have gambled her heart in vain.

"Nora Roberts, the bestselling author of Hidden Riches and Born In Fire, continues the romantic Irish saga--the story of the Concannon sisters, three modern women bound by the timeless spirit of their land. When the harsh storms of winter descended upon western Ireland, the locals stayed indoors--and visitors stayed away. Brianna Concannon's bed-and-breakfast became a cold and empty place. But that was fine with Brianna. She enjoyed the peace and quiet, even when the icy winds howled at her window. But this year she's expecting an unusual guest--mystery writer Grayson Thane from America. A restless wanderer with a painful past, he plans to spend the cold winter alone. But sometimes fate has a plan of its own. Sometimes a fire can be born in ice... "

is one of the best by Nora Roberts. I recommend this book to all.
Born in Fire.......2007-08-08
This book is the first of Nora Roberts "born in" trilogy. it is one of my favorets.
Enjoyable.......2007-02-12
The characters in this book are lovely and it's a pleasure to hear the Irish in the reader's voice. This is my favorite in the series. I only wish the series was available in an unabridged format.
I loved the homey feel of this book........2007-01-12
In the first of the trilogy the characters are agitated and brooding, until they fall in love.
In this book the characters are real and down to earth. I really enjoyed reading about the Inn and its' different characters that visited. Nora writes wonderfully about a writer in this one (Grayson). The descriptions of Ireland are dreamy. If you read the first and were not too sure about finishing the triolgy, think again. This was a great read.
Nora Roberts- Born in Trilogy.......2006-11-04
I've yet to read something written by Nora Roberts that I have not been completely satisfied with. She's the kind of author that gives you everything your looking for all in one place, and always leaves you craving more.
Book Description
People magazine declared that "[Nora Roberts] is at the top of her game," and there's no greater evidence of that than these three novels. From the horse farms of Virginia to the rugged beauty of Montana to an island off the coast of Georgia, these novels showcase Nora Roberts's talents for intense drama, vivid characters, and fast-paced suspense.

Love all of Nora's romance books.......2007-02-25
You can never go wrong with a Nora Roberts romance novel and this is just one more great one in the list.
beware small type.......2007-01-15
i haven't finished reading even the first of these three books, but I am struggling to read the small, serifed type. I don't usually have any problems reading normal type, but something about the font and size of the type, combined with the large book is making this read a bit of a struggle for me.
So far, really like the characters and very typical Nora Roberts writing.
Very Good Reads.......2007-01-14
If you are an avid reader as I aa and a Nora Roberts fan too, you can't beat these three great books combined in one volume.
I am certain that you will enjoy these three earlier works by Nora Roberts.
Great vendor.......2006-11-14
This book was in great condition. The delivery was fast. Thank you for your prompt attention.
True Betrayals/Montana Sky/Sanctuary.......2006-08-31
Truly a great grouping of three story lines. Each one kept me on the edge of my seat and reluctant to put down until I completed it. Descriptions of location and events put you right there. I can't wait to read more of this author.

On May 16, 1997, adventurer Lonnie Dupre and his Australian exploration partner, John Hoelscher, set off from Paamiut, Greenland, to circumnavigate the world's largest island using only the traditional methods of kayak and dog sledge. "Do we have all our ducks in a row?" Dupre wondered. "Or is this a suicide mission? Can our kayaks handle the long journey and seas ahead of us?" These worries were certainly justified; by the third day fatigue began to set in from negotiating heavy ice caps. By day nine, Hoelscher was experiencing symptoms of mild hypothermia. With perseverance, however, the courageous duo traveled some 3,200 miles of Greenland, a country roughly 14 times the size of England. Students followed the expedition's progress on the Internet and learned about the indigenous Inuit culture of Greenland: "Kiviaq," the explorers reported, "is a bird caught and fermented for six months in sealskin, feathers and all. When the sealskin is opened, the smell and taste is similar to that of bleu cheese."
Fashioned in the tradition of both the photo-essay and travel journal, Greenland Expedition provides the best of both worlds. The reader can view the immense, raw beauty of Greenland from the safety of a warm living room, without risking life and limb dodging house-sized chunks of icebergs in a sea kayak. Moreover, the pictures and narration open a window onto a land little known to the rest of the world. Author Dupre suffered the worst of towering sea swells, minus-57-degree weather, and 100-mile-an-hour winds to transport the land "where ice is born" into the homes of students and readers. He does so in a beautifully unadorned way, in no small part influenced by the Inuit way of life that he so admires. --David Rhoades
Book Description
Author Lonnie Dupre readily confesses that the spirit of adventure is strong within his soul. And over the years he has answered its beckoning call many times. But none of those adventures were this long or dangerous or fulfilling! The book is filled with breathtaking photographs that tell the visual story and help bring to life this extraordinary and dramatic adventure. The foreword was written by fellow adventurer/explorer Will Steger.
Customer Reviews:
Adventure comes to me........2000-07-07
I found this book about the adventures of Lonnie Dupre and John H. to be very inspiring and thrilling. Reading Lonnie's journal entries about their daily encounters with nature, the elements, and personal interaction was a keyhole into their mindset.
The pictures were breathtaking and certainly enhanced the message Lonnie gave the reader. I would recommend this book to any active adventurer and/or armchair adventurer interested in the polar regions and dog sledding.

Michelle Kwan
ASIN: 0345421361
Release Date: 1997-09-28 |
Book Description
From the moment her mom laced up her first pair of skates at age five, Michelle Kwan has been a natural on the ice. Graceful and determined, she sailed through her first competition when seven years old and has been winning ever since. Now, at seventeen, Michelle Kwan is poised for triumph at the 1998 Winter Olympics, training for gold and a glittering place in skating history.
This inspiring biography of the young skating superstar reveals the support and sacrifice that have propelled Michelle to the top: her close-knit family, the pressure to get a proper education while competing all over the world, the perseverance after she fell during competition and lost her number one status, and--of course-- the constant demand to create unforgettable skating performances.
A fascinating behind-the-scenes story of challenge and conquest,
BORN TO SKATE recreates the magic and beauty of a life on the ice.
Customer Reviews:
Written like a bad soap opera.......2005-11-11
This was written like a bad soap opera. Details are over the top and too dramatic and the writing style goes over the top. The message becomes too obvious and just too much! There's a reason people are willing to sell this book for a penny. Not worth reading.
Slightly informing and incredibly brief.......2005-05-02
If you want to learn about Michelle Kwan, a girl who worked hard for her dreams, you're not getting it. You will read about Michelle Kwan, ice skating star. The book has one page, that's one measly page, of information BESIDES Michelle. I am writing a report on Michelle, and I am having the HARDEST time extracting information from this book. All it focuses on is her awards and later accomplishments. Where is all the information about her youth life? COULDN'T FIND IT!
Disappointing and inaccurate.......2002-02-17
I'm a huge fan of figure skating in general and Michelle Kwan in particular, but this book sounded like it was written by an over-enthusiastic child. A lot of the quotes were taken directly from interviews that the skaters had done on TV, the writing and grammar were sloppy, and there were a lot of details that were just plain wrong. Tonya Harding did NOT come in third at the 93 nationals; that was Tonia Kwiatkowski (whose parents, by the way, are named Phil and Corinne, not Shirley and Leonard). Epstein waxes poetic about Michelle's brilliant artistry in 93 and 94, when she really didn't begin to shine until the 95-96 season. And any time Michelle didn't win first place, Epstein acts like she was robbed. These may seem like petty gripes, but with all the well-written literature available about Michelle, this book's numerous errors cause it to fall far short of what we've come to expect in skating coverage. Do yourself a favor and read Michelle's own autobiography or either of the two better-researched books by Christine Brennan.
This book had very good detailing of how Kwan skated........1999-11-08
The book I read, "Born To Skate," was the best bool on a bibliography that I have ever read. The book had a lot of excellent detailing, which made the book sound a lot better. Michelle Kwan's story about her was interesting and educating. It talked about her dreams when she was little and how she made her dreams come true.
Her big dream was to go to the olympics, which she did and to become a world figure skater, which she also did. She always lived up to her expectations in life. She always kept a smile on her face even when she was down.
This story about Michelle Kwan's life was so wonderful to read about, because everything was positive about her attitude. Born To Skate was a good story about people living up to their dreams and never letting go of them no matter what. In the story she said, "Always live up to your dreams!"
I loved this book!.......1999-06-28
This book, besides giving tons of information on Michelle, had a great little directory in the back about all the jumps and spins. It taught me how to do my first lutz! I loved this book like I said and I hope you will too, but only another figure skater could give it 5 stars.
Book Description
There is nothing more depressing for a middle-aged lovelorn woman with bald patches on her head than to find herself in an English seaside resort out of season. Agatha Raisin, her hair falling out after a run-in with a hairdresser-cum-murderess from a previous investigation, travels to an old-fashioned hotel in order to repair the damage away from the neighbors in her all-too-cozy Cotswolds village. Unhappy about the slow results and prompted by the elderly residents of the resort, she consults the local witch for help. Agatha purchases a hair tonic (and a love potion, just in case!) and is soon sprouting hairs and capturing the fancy of the village police inspector. But the quiet town is stunned by the murder of the witch. Which one of the graying guests is capable of such a brutal crime? The brassy yet endearing Agatha won't stop until she finds the culprit--and, of course, a little love, too.
Customer Reviews:
Agatha Explores Curses, Potions, Fortunes . . . and Romance as She Pines in Exile for James Lacey.......2007-08-02
If you haven't yet read Agatha Raisin and the Wizard of Evesham, you should read that book before starting this one. There's a continuity of story line that adds to the appeal of Agatha Raisin and the Witch of Wyckhadden.
At the end of Agatha Raisin and the Wizard of Evesham, Agatha is having the ultimate bad hair day as she has lost most of hers. Not wanting her former fiancé, James Lacey, to see her looking like that, Agatha flees Carsely for a spot on the south coast of England in Wyckhadden during winter. She soon finds that neither the weather nor the wintry attitudes of her fellow guests at the Garden Hotel suit her fancy. With her hair firmly covered by a wig and scarves, Agatha does venture out when a nice-looking man invites her dancing.
Concerned about her hair, Agatha is soon persuaded to visit the local witch, who offers many remedies that often seem to work. Having bought some hair potion, Agatha decides it won't hurt to buy a bottle of love potion while she's there.
Pretty soon, Agatha's hair is growing in again, she seems to be having success with the love potion, but Wyckhadden and its residents are getting on her nerves. Uncharacteristically erratic, Agatha gets into lots of trouble by lying to the police . . . which causes great problems when dead bodies start turning up. No one takes her very seriously as a sleuth, and even Agatha begins to suspect that she's no more than a pushy blunderer whose ineptness triggers violent solutions to crimes.
In this book, M. C. Beaton is determined to convince readers that Agatha's many fears (of aging, being alone, losing James Lacey, not being the center of attention, losing a friend, and not having something to do) are destroying her chances for happiness. I think you'll agree with M. C. Beaton.
But Agatha's self-sabotaging behavior gets to be more than a little annoying in this book, making Agatha Raisin and the Witch of Wyckhadden one of the weakest entries in this generally entertaining series. Unless you feel compelled to read all of the novels in this series, you could certainly skip this one. You probably won't find the plot to be all that interesting; the new characters among the suspects and victims aren't likely to enlist your sympathy; and the mysteries aren't particularly rewarding either.
It's a Mystery to Me!.......2003-10-14
This was the second Agatha Raisin mystery that I have read...and I'm sorry to say that it will be my last. I thought that having a middle-aged, former professional woman as the sleuth was a nice twist, but M.C. Beaton apparently hates middle-aged women. The uniqueness of the plots of both the Witch of Wyckhadden and the Wizard of Evesham is spoiled by the author's depiction of a mean-spirited, self-centered, whining and grassing woman. If it were only Agatha that comes across as grossly unsympathetic and unlikeable, the other characters might have seemed more interesting by comparison and story line might actually have been enhanced. Beaton, however, does a remarkable job of causing you to dislike nearly every character and to become totally indifferent to their fate. I was actually rooting to have more of the odious creatures knocked off just so that I wouldn't have to read any more about them before coming to the solution! Agatha has been criticized for stumbling upon solutions before, and this "triumph" is not any more a matter of detection than the others. I love the cozy genre, but there is nothing cozy, comfortable, or challenging in this series of books. Do yourself a favor and pick up a Catherine Aird story instead...she's not prolific, but every book is a gem.
Hail, Hail, the Witch is Dead!.......2003-07-02
In this 9th book in the Agatha Raisin series, the reader finds Agatha desperately trying to regrow the hair that fell out during her previous case. She retreats to a resort for some relaxation and to give her hair some time to regrow, and quickly learns that there is a witch in town that might be able to provide a tonic to help in this process. While she is visiting the witch, she decides to purchase a love potion to help in her never-ending romantic problems. During her visit to the town, the witch is murdered, and Agatha attempts to help the local police officer solve the case, and also tries to catch his eye in the process.
I enjoyed this case primarily because Agatha was not mooning over James Lacey as she has in previous books. I enjoy the character of Agatha, and since I am rooting for her to have a good romance, I felt that it might actually happen for her with Jimmy. Overall, I enjoyed the book as a part of the Agatha series, but if you have never read any of the other books it would probably be better to start elsewhere first. This was not Agatha at her most endearing but still an excellent read.
The first book in the series is "Agatha Raisin and the Quiche of Death". Enjoy!
A dissapointment.......2003-06-07
I had just finished Ms. Beaton's "Quiche of Death", and so thoroughly enjoyed it that I purchased and set out to read other Agatha Raisin novels. This, the second Agatha Raisin novel I read, was quite a disappointment.
Ms. Beaton writes simply in straightforward sentences; there will not be a need to consult a dictionary. This is not meant as a criticism. Her writing style makes this an enjoyable, easy, and quick read.
You will, at least I did, care what happens to Agatha Raisin, and that was one of the reasons this was ultimately such a disappointing novel.
The personal interaction between Agatha and the male lead was unsatisfying and unrealistic - even for a work of fiction.
Agatha appears more a "fool" than a heroine.
The end of the novel is important. I like to finish a light read, such as this, feeling good about the accomplishments of and the pleasures found by the heroine (or hero). I can read a newspaper to find unhappy stories. I do not turn to a light novel to find it. I guess I'm just a "sucker" for happy endings. I also like some detection, somewhere, in a mystery novel. This novel did not provide either.
Unfortunately, Ms. Beaton apparently thinks ending her story with a quick "you did it" without any prior clues, and closing the novel with an unhappy heroine is appropriate. Well it isn't for me - for shame.
If "misery loves company" is true, this novel may appeal to someone whose personal life is a shambles, as is the heroine's. Others may find this work sadly depressing.
I hope this is the aberation in the series. I concur with an earlier reviewer, if this had been my first Agatha Raisin novel, I would not have purchased a second. The "Quiche" novel was so good, I will try another. However, if it also ends with the heroine's life in "silly" personal failures and without even a modicum of detection, the remaining novels will go to charity that much sooner.
Another Charming Little Mystery!.......2003-03-20
This installment in the Agatha Raisin series is quite enjoyable. Agatha has decided to holiday (off-season) in a seaside town while her hair grows out. She ends up meeting some truly eccentric octogenarians, and of course murder occurs. This time it is the village "witch", and it turns out that she had quite a few enemies. In her blundering way, Agatha sets out to solve the murder and becomes involved with the village police inspector. He's a treat, but true to form, Agatha can't let things take their natural course and precipitates a breakup. Anyway, the mystery is solved, and Agatha has to go back to her life in Carsley (with a new cat in tow).
