"In this wondrous new holiday book in Joan Medlicott's USA Today bestselling series, the Christmas season brings a host of surprises -- not all of them welcome -- to the lovely ladies of Covington and their small North Carolina mountain town. The new pastor at the Cove Road Church in Covington discovers that a former pastor from forty years ago was never ordained as a minister, and was therefore not qualified to marry anyone -- which means that five longstanding marriages are invalid! With their marriages thrown into crisis, it's decided that the couples absolutely must remarry on Christmas Eve. But with the church desperately in need of repairs and lacking the funds to fix the rotting floorboards and the outdated heating system, how can they ever get it ready in time? Sounds like a job for the ladies of Covington! Grace, Hannah, and Amelia step in to organize the weddings, while their friends and neighbors volunteer paint, lumber, and good old-fashioned elbow grease to fix up the church. But when last-minute obstacles threaten to stop the weddings, they're going to need a miracle to turn Christmas Eve into a wedding day that no one will ever forget. Brimming with warmth, charm, and the spirit of the holidays, A Covington Christmas is a delightful gift for new fans and returning fans alike! "

A Covington Christmas.......2007-09-15
A surprising discovery in the church attic by Grace and young Pastor Denny Ledbetter necessitates five hasty weddings. However, the church is still reeking with smoke from the fire which destroyed Grace's home, and the ancient heating systme is faltering in the December cold. A Christmas miracle is needed so that the church will be ready for the weddings and other holiday festivities. The ladies of Covington--Grace, Hannah, and Amelia--take a back seat to young Pastor Ledbetter and ten of his parishioners in "A Covington Christmas". This book has a rather thin plot and was somewhat of a disappointment for me since I expected "the ladies" to be a more prominent part of this book. However, Pastor Ledbetter does promise to be an interesting character for future additions to the series.

The Gardens of Covington: A Novel (Ladies of Covington) Another lovely time in the lives of the Ladies. They deal with all the problems of real life in a kind and loving way.
Christmas in the Mountains.......2007-05-27
This is the first book I have read in the Covington series. I thought it was great. The author makes the mountain ways and saying sound authentic- even though she is from the Virgin Islands.
I have never met anyone who found out their marriage was not valid, but this book definitely explored the topic and left you with lots to think about.
I loved the parts where the mysterious flowers showed up in the church. I also liked Denny, the minister, and the way he was always praying and how God answered his prayers.
This will not be the last Covington series I read. In fact, when I finish writing this review, I intend to buy the rest.
If you like the Appalachain Mountains, you will love this book.
Not Much Christmas.......2007-01-18
I am hooked on the happenings in Covington. It is always fun to read the next installment of the saga of Hannah, Amelia and Grace and their community of friends. I think the title should have been Winter Weddings. There just wasn't too much Christmas. It was an enjoyable
read nevertheless. The mystery woman from Paris; the love revealed and renewed and some unresolved relationships leave the door open for more stories from Covington.
The 'Ladies of Covington' is delightful even without the warmth of the holidays.......2006-12-11
When the new pastor at the Cove Road Church in Covington discovers the former pastor was never ordained as a minister - making five longstanding marriages invalid - trouble begins when the couples mark Christmas as an occasion for getting married for real. With a church falling down, the ladies of the town decide to embark on a renovation fund - and trouble really begins. The 'Ladies of Covington' is delightful even without the warmth of the holidays: public libraries will find their exploits fun and the seasonal acquisition certain to receive repeated attention from patrons.

The pictures of the San Angelo Christmas at Old Fort Concho are wonderful along with the pictorials of Texas at its happiest. The recipes that I have tried live up to their press which is a pleasant surprise in this day of cookbooks! If you are from Texas, you need this book!! Book Description
What clues to murder are reflected in a shattered mirror? What link is there between stolen documents and ghostly apparitions? Who turned a love triangle into a violent act of passion? The answers are "not only unexpected...but unpredictable" (Times Literary Supplement).
Download Description
"E-book exclusive extras: 1) Christie biographer Charles Osborne's essay on Murder in the Mews; 2) ""The Poirots"": the complete guide to all the cases of the great Belgian detective.
In the title work in this collection of novellas, Poirot and Inspector Japp collaborate on the investigation of a suspicious suicide. The supernatural is said to play in the disappearance of top secret military plans in The Incredible Theft -- an incredible claim, indeed, as Poirot will prove. The bullet that kills Gervase Chevenix-Gore shatters a mirror in Dead Man's Mirror -- just the clue Poirot needs to solve the crime. And, while basking on white Mediterranean sands, Poirot stares trouble in the face -- the beautiful face of Valentine Chantry, now celebrating her fifth marriage -- in Triangle at Rhodes. Daily Mail: 'All four tales are admirable entertainment ... Mrs Christie's solutions are unexpected and satisfying.'

The Only Lie?.......2006-11-27
"Triangle at Rhodes" was the very first Agatha Christie story I ever read, as an American boy growing up in France. I wish one of her biographers could place it for me precisely when it was written, for it seems at one point Christie was literally moving Poirot all around the world, on the Orient Express of course, then in Mesopotamia to meet Nurse Amy Leatheran, and out to the ruins in APPOINTMENT WITH DEATH and on that fatal cruise on the Karnak on DEATH ON THE NILE. I feel sure that "Triangle at Rhodes" must fit right in there but alas, I have no idea where Rhodes is or where it is in relation to Petra (APPOINTMENT) and indeed, maybe there were two world voyages for Poirot, and his little trek to Rhodes might have been just a holiday jaunt in the final days right before the war. You know how the second half of PARKER PYNE sends Pyne to a different Mid East capital? Same big boom of travel writing on Christie's part? She must have known the war was coming and that her travels would be curtailed, and during WWII her novels stayed strictly at home, with the exception of two highly exceptional books, the Mary Westmacott ABSENT IN THE SPRING, and the historical epic DEATH COMES AS THE END.
If you've read "Triangle at Rhodes," then the mystery of EVIL UNDER THE SUN won't be a surprise to you, and I must say that it's so much better worked out in the novel than in the short story that following the differences is a lesson in stagecraft.
Of the four stories in this book, only MURDER IN THE MEWS itself is really a first class achievement, for whenever Christie writes about the Sapphic she really lets her romantic nature go haywire. The relationship between the two roommates, Jane Penderleith and Barbara Allen, is never really made explicit, but certainly Mrs. Allen's decision to remarry precipitated the great crisis that leads to her death. Jane is one of Christie's great tragic characters, and her love for Barbara is a stark, real thing, the product I expect of Christie's early immersion in the Greek classic drama. Over and over again she has these Iphigenia slash Cassandra heroines who alone know the whole truth and who either say it out loud, shocking their communities, or keep it silent out of a greater, more pagan love for another. It strikes me also that MURDER IN THE MEWS might be the only Christie book whose *title* actually proves a lie, so to speak, or might there be others? Help me out here.
Great.......2006-11-10
The book arrived in perfect shape and I love all of Agatha Christies books. It came much sooner than I expected.
Christie's Best Collection of Shorter Stories.......2003-11-29
Murder in the Mews begins with a country house murder in the perfect Christie fashion in "Dead Man's Mirror" (ideas of which seemed to have filtered into the film, Gosford Park). This book consists of three more longish stories that outshine most of those in Agatha Christie's other short story collections. These stories are all typically English of their period and show off their great detective creation, Hercule Poirot, in a less pompous form than the novels often portray him. The author has taken the time in these short pieces to assemble a large cast and a great variety of clues to hold any reader's interest. Almost as good as her full novels and that is saying a lot.
A vintage collection of Christie's.......2002-10-07
Murder in the Mews brought together 4 short stories by Agatha Christie, most if not all were also published in other collections (albeit with minor alternations). I did feel a little cheated when I discovered it. Nonetheless, the two which I had not read did give undeniable pleasure.
Murder in the Mews took place on a location which Poirot and Inspector Japp happened to stroll by on the night of the crime. Despite it being Guy Fawkes day, it was such a place that they remarked it would have been perfect for a murder. And the next day, they were summoned to attend to a suspicious suicide at the very same location. In this short story, Christie tantalised the readers with a myriad of clues, most of which would mislead rather than clarify. A worthwhile mystery.
In the Dead Man's Mirror, Poirot was summoned by an old fashioned aristocrat, only to arrive moments before he apparently committed suicide. This story appeared in another publication as "The Second Gong". Suspicions were cast on the dead man's adopted daughter and his nephew - especially when it came to light that the aristocrat intended to cut them off without a penny if they did not abide by his wishes to marry each other. It was important in this story for the reader to visualise as accurately as possible the scene of the murder in order to find proof whether it was suicide or murder.
The Incredible Theft was almost a carbon copy of "The Submarine Plans". Two leading British politicians had a small weekend party which included a well-suspected female spy. Ostensibly, she was included to entrap her, to catch her in the act. However, when vital plans were stolen without a clue, the politicians had to call in Poirot to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Poirot had to question all those present carefully to clear their names, or nail them with the evidence.
The last story, "Triangle at Rhodes", had Poirot on holiday in a resort at Rhodes. Other guests at the resort included a glamourous socialite who was flirting with other men despite the presence of a jealous husband. In the absence of Hastings (which would not have fitted well into the setting), Christie used another female guest to hold conversations with Poirot to flesh out the narration. Being familiar now with Christie's sleight-of-hand tricks, I was not misdirected. However, it took an unrevealed-before-hand witnessing of Poirot to nail the culprit when someone did die in the triangle of passion.
I would recommend reading the book but not buying it.
Collection a.k.a. Dead Man's Mirror.......2002-05-31
This collection has appeared under 2 titles that I know of: _Murder in the Mews and Other Stories_ and _Dead Man's Mirror_.
Where a story has appeared elsewhere under an alternate title, the title given in this book is listed first.
"Dead Man's Mirror", a.k.a. "Hercule Poirot and the Broken Mirror" - An alternate version of this story also appears as "The Second Gong" in _The Witness for the Prosecution and Other Stories_. The dead man in question engaged Poirot to come to his country home to clear up an unspecified scandal, but before their first face-to-face encounter, the client is found shot dead in a locked room containing a broken wall mirror.
"The Incredible Theft" - Essentially the same story as "The Submarine Plans" in _The Under Dog and Other Stories_.
"Murder in the Mews", a.k.a. "Good Night for a Murder" - Always thrifty with good ideas, Christie used the same story structure in "The Market Basing Mystery" (see _The Under Dog and Other Stories_), although the stage setting, personalities of the supporting characters, and motives are different.
"Triangle at Rhodes", a.k.a. "Before It's Too Late", "Double Alibi" - As Poirot remarks to a fellow-guest at the seaside, he finds human behaviour somewhat monotonous, since it repeats itself so often - in patterns, such as the triangle. In this case, the notorious beauty Valentine Chantry, accompanied by her 5th (or is he 6th?) husband Commander Chantry is a fellow-guest, and despite her hulking brute of a husband, appears to be taking an interest in Douglas Gold - a handsome man with a pleasant wife but apparently no wits to speak of. Poirot, foreseeing trouble, eventually makes one of his rare attempts to prevent a crime before it takes place. Such attempts are rarely successful...

Not for Theda--one or two things don't compute. So Theda marshals her investigative journalism skills to turn gumshoe.

Enjoyable first mystery.......2007-10-01
Simon's series debut, "Mew is for Murder" features a likable heroine, some interesting local color (of the Cambridge, MS area), good pacing, and a story that will appeal to cat lovers. For those who find too many contemporary mysteries either overcome with their own cutesiness, or drowned in gore, this is a pleasant alternative. Give Simon a try.
Mew is for more, please!.......2006-09-06
A mystery involving cats that isn't cutesy or anthropomorphic--Clea Simon gets major points just for that. But on top of it, she created a terrific heroine in Theda Krakow, freelance journalist--smart, funny, strong yet vulnerable: thoroughly human.
Can't wait to read more!
Who killed the cat lady?.......2006-04-03
Theda Krakow is a freelance writer. She goes to interview cat lady Lillian and finds her dead. Everything points to her death being an accident except for the fact that someone keeps breaking into Lillian's house. It is rumored there is hidden treasure in the house. Theda is determined to get to the bottom of things and prove Lillian was murdered and why.
There are quite a few suspects including the real estate neighbor, the schizophrenic son, and a waitress who helped Theda with the cats. Can Theda find out who the killer is without putting herself in jeopardy?
I really enjoyed this first novel. I can't wait to read another one in this series. I am not fond of the many cat mysteries, but even though this was is billed with a cat, the cat is not prominent and does not solve the crime.
The characters and setting were well written. The plot was well crafted and there are plenty of red herrings to keep the reader guessing.
I highly recommend this book.

Definitely a keeper........2006-02-04
A fast, fun read. A delightful debut mystery that I hope will be a long running series.
Theda Krakow has recently quit her steady job at a local newspaper to try her hand at freelance writing. Her boy friend has left town and worst of all her cherished kitty has died. Can things get any worse? Of course they can. And do!
Theda arrives to interview a woman who she suspects may be a cat collector or hoarder. Instead Theda finds the woman dead and her house overrun with cats. When animal control arrives to collect the cats Theda rescues a kitten. The cats and their fate now interests Theda. She decides to try and find out why the dead woman had so many cats and with the help of friends starts looking into the life of the "cat lady". The more Theda learns the more it looks like the cat lady's death was no accident.
Clea Simon Has A Winner.......2005-12-16
Clea Simon has a winner! This is a mystery that cats are really cats; and that is so refreshing. Theda Krakow a freelance writer decides to write about a cat hoarder in her neighborhood. Only to discover that the woman in question is lying dead in her kitchen on the day she goes to interview her. Is the cat lady's death an accident as the police have reported it?
Theda not quite ready to adopt a cat yet so soon after the death of her own cat, but she rescues a limping kitten. The other cats in and about the house are rounded up and taken to the shelter. Somehow, she cannot see the kitten going into such an uncertain future. Something keeps drawing Theda back to the house and she begins to suspect murder.
Is it the young girl who has a punk band and sneaks in to take car of some of the cats left behind? Is it the woman next door who is a real estate dealer and wants to see the large house sold to someone who can take care of the property and raise the property values around the neighborhood? Some Theda is not sure she is comfortable with as she lives in the same neighborhood and gentrification will put her and many of her neighbors out.
What about the prejudice behavior towards the cat lady's mentally ill son? Would someone have killed her to keep him away from the neighborhood? To hunt for a supposed hidden treasure that he would not be able to handle. Why are people so nasty about her son?
Who are the other characters that show up at the house off and on and what are they looking for? Why is everyone interested in the cat lady's house and was she a true cat hoarder or was she someone who really took care of the cats and rescued them?
Read this book for a great mystery with real cats that do not talk or read books. You may find yourself rethinking your views on gentrification, mental illness and thankful that Clea Simon has provided the information in a great story with interesting characters. I can't wait to read about Theda, Musetta, and hopefully Violet again.

Three novellas comprise this collection of cases presented to the great Belgian detective: Murder in the Mews; The Incredible Theft; and Triangle at Rhodes. This is the 11th Poirot title in the Mystery Masters series.
Customer Reviews:
Well written by Christie, well read by Hawthorne and Fraser.......2002-11-12
It is a lucky coincidence that Audio Partners is issuing complete readings of the Hercule Poirot short stories and novels just after Acorn Media and A&E have finished releasing all of the David Suchet video versions. It is very instructive, especially to film majors, to compare the originals with the scripts.
For example, the most recent Poirot collection appears on four CDs in Audio Partners set 45284, which includes Nigel Hawthorne reading "Murder in the Mews" and Hugh Fraser (the Hastings of the television series) reading "Triangle at Rhodes" and "The Incredible Theft." All of these are available on Acorn Media sets, should you wish to follow my" hear-watch-compare" suggestion.
The plot of "Triangle at Rhodes" is very similar to that of "Evil Under the Sun," which has been twice filmed, once as part of the Suchet series and once as a film with Peter Ustinov as the sleuth. So here you have a fabulous chance for a triple comparison.
Both actors take on all the roles, as a reader must do, neither one quite catching the Poirot voice as well as Suchet has on the screen and in those tapes in which he does the readings. In fact, Hawthorne tends to make Chief Inspector Japp sound a little hostile; but both readers are quite good and carry the stories along with their enthusiasm.
The CDs, by the way, are divided into tracks, so you can find your way back should you lose the setting from your last listening. Tapes, of course, stay where they left off.
