"The author of The Secret History of the Pink Carnation continues the romantic adventures of England's greatest spy with a newly arrived adversary from France, the murderous Black Tulip The Pink Carnation, history's most elusive spy and England's only hope for preventing a Napoleonic invasion, returns in Lauren Willig's dazzling imaginative new historical romance. The Masque of the Black Tulip opens with the murder of a courier from the London War Office, his confidential dispatch for the Pink Carnation stolen. Meanwhile, the Black Tulip, France's deadliest spy, is in England with instructions to track down and kill the Pink Carnation. Only Henrietta Uppington and Miles Dorrington know where the Pink Carnation is stationed. Using a secret code book, Henrietta has deciphered a message detailing the threat of the Black Tulip. Meanwhile, the War Office has enlisted Miles to track down the notorious French spy before he (or she) can finish the deadly mission. But what Henrietta and Miles don't know is that while they are trying to find the Black Tulip (and possibly falling in love), the Black Tulip is watching them."

3 out of 5 stars pale shadows.......2007-09-20

I really wanted to like Ms. Willig's books. I was excited when I first saw "Pink Carnation" on the shelves of the bookstore. But I can't read them without feeling as though I'm reading another inadequate Georgette Heyer imitator. I have never found an author who can even approach Ms. Heyer at her best, and all of them seem to use her books as source material (whether they actually do or not, it seems that way). "Pink Carnation", "Black Tulip" et al. also remind me of one of my all-time favorite books, a short, YA title called "The Sherwood Ring" by Elizabeth Pope. Why? Well, its that modern-girl-in-library mixed with chapters of historical fiction approach. The Sherwood Ring worked the same way. OK- accuse me of having read so much historical fiction/romance that I can't avoid seeing similarities. It's probably true, but unfortunately, although I want to love Ms. Willig's books, they seem mostly about repeating conventions, rather than adding new ingredients.

4 out of 5 stars As long as you're not expecting a serious historical romance/mystery..........2007-08-21

Yet again, Ms. Willig impressed me with her lighthearted take on historical romance/mystery! Although I read these books in the completely WRONG order (first Emerald Ring, then Pink Carnationa, and finally Black Tulip), I was taken in by all of them--this one no less than the others. Although I felt that the "oh no heroine might be compromised marry her off quickly" story line was somewhat repetitive between this installment and Emerald Ring, the stories of Henrietta and Miles vs. Letty and Geoff were different enough to keep me intrigued. I'll just say that I can't wait for the 4th Pink Carnation novel!

3 out of 5 stars Not Much of a Mystery or Historically interesting.......2007-08-15

Being a large fan of historical fiction (and non-fiction), I was prepared for the usual period correct historical backdrop and a story based true events that were wrapped in an intriguing twisting story. I would say on both the historical and mystery fronts, the author only succeeded half way.

Although the novel is technically set during the Napoleon era, the rest of the story didn't fit correctly with the time period. The banter was amusing, but unlike what people would say at that time. In addition, there were references to things, such as adoption, which I believe didn't exist at the time in the way Henrietta referred to it (put oneself up for adoption). The interactions seemed to be supplanted from the present to that era, with the only the costumes and setting working for the period theme.

The "mystery" of who was the Black Tulip was not interesting or a mystery. Vaughn being the Black Tulip was a dead horse that was so obviously not correct. Most of the plot wasn't about the Black Tulip, but the romance between Miles and Henrietta. I am a fan of romance novels, but this wasn't the plot. The romance distracted from the real goal of the book, which was spy with a flower alias.

I thought the book was a good read, but would not read it again. The author should have picked a genre. She didn't pick a historical novel, a mystery or a romance. She had some jumbled hodge-podge of all three that didn't harmonize.

4 out of 5 stars Better than THE SECRET HISTORY OF THE PINK CARNATION.......2007-06-13

I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in the series - THE SECRET HISTORY OF THE PINK CARNATION. I thought it was funny and imaginative. But the second book is even better. The author finds her stride.

The story of Lady Henrietta and Miles is better developed. I continue to like the switching back and forth between the current romance/mystery and the 200-year-old one, although some say the story about Eloise and Colin is superfluous.

If you like this book, don't miss the first in the series or the next, which is THE DECEPTION OF THE EMERALD RING.

1 out of 5 stars Was it meant to be funny?.......2007-06-12

Were they lighthearted drollities rather than stomping elephants? O dear. Having read many detective novels, historical and otherwise, and possesed of a passion for Georgette Heyer, this reader looked foward to what promised to be a diverting read. But alas, while I was glued to the book for the evening (one I have lost and shall never recover), it was in awe struck horror, and a masochistic desire to see just how bad it could be. And it was very bad. The author's bio notes that she is studying both history and law at Havard - how? have they read her books? - I have quite lost my respect for that august institution if this is the calibre of work they produce. The author obviously feels that teen romance pulp is the height of literature, and reproduces it with little or no difference between time periods or characters. This is the history of the world as acted by your college's sororities (with the one frat guy playing all the love-interest parts). I pass over the scenes set in France - Mon Dieu - with closed eyes and a shudder, the lack of historical (or life) verisimilitude, and close with the earnest wish that given the author obviously had a fetish for strong, masculine hands, perhaps someone could use theirs to strangle her.

Book Description

A deceptively simple story and the shortest of Dumas's most famous novels, The Black Tulip (1850) weaves historical events surrounding a brutal murder into a tale of romantic love. Set in Holland in 1672, this timeless political allegory draws on the violence and crimes of history, making a
case against tyranny and creating a symbol of justice and tolerance: the fateful tulipa negra.

Although this book does not follow the same style of adventure Dumas had written in his Musketeer stories, this book has been said to be his best. This story is filled with romance, love, excitement, and of course, Tulips. An excellent "happily ever after" ending. A must read! Please Note: This book is easy to read in true text, not scanned images that can sometimes be difficult to decipher. The Microsoft eBook has a contents page linked to the chapter headings for easy navigation. The Adobe eBook has bookmarks at chapter headings and is printable up to two full copies per year. 5 out of 5 stars Still a hit.......2007-06-27

I bought this book for my daughter, who rarely reads fiction. I recall The Black Tulip as light, humorous and of historical interest. This edition is very attractive.

3 out of 5 stars Strange but pleasing.......2007-06-07

I love Dumas. I had never heard of The Black Tulip. It is a big departure from his standard fare. It is also very short. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone that loves Dumas' swashbuckling heros. It is totally different. However, if you can get pass the fact that it is a Dumas book and contains no sword fights, then it is a sweet book.

5 out of 5 stars Dumas is indeed the master story teller!.......2007-04-09

Who would have thought that a book, with a simple plot about two rivals trying racing to be the first to grow a black tulip, could be so unputdownable? There are no lords and ladies, no swashbuckling heros, no evil cardinals or Miladys -- nothing but a darn good yarn, and a very sweet love story.

Dumas is just brilliant (as always) and his dialogue (as always) is among the finest I've ever come across. A very quick, albeit enjoyable, read. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Wowzers!--Dumas is a *Master* Storyteller.......2005-12-17

Not everyone could do it. In fact, almost no one else that I could think of, could construct a story about a gardener whose main passion in life is to grow a new variety of tulip, and turn it into a compelling, intrigue-filled, heroic romance. But Dumas does, here.

Certainly, Dumas shines in his more famous novels, like The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo, giants of hundreds and hundreds of pages (thousands if you consider the entire Musketeer cycle), repleat with swashbuckling, conspiracy, murder and ladies-fair. It is therefore understandable that some of his audience might be put off by The Black Tulip, which is a scant 200 and some pages, and has its hero in jail for most of the novel, struggling to grow a flower by proxy. But really, the lesson is how great Alexandre Dumas is, because The Black Tulip manages to be just as rewarding (and at times, as thrilling) as his more renowned epics. Also, Dumas here shows some of his versatility and his incredible understanding of humanity, in the lovers conversations between Cornelius and Rosa, and in his rye, good-natured and subtle observations that, really, concentrating on tulip-growing, as opposed to warfare or violence, is a sign of greatness, not of mediocrity.

You can't come to The Black Tulip looking for precisely the same things you'd seek in Dumas' other winners, but if you're looking for a wonderful little story, almost perfectly told, you're in the right place. With this tale, Dumas takes his place as my favorite author, of all time.

5 out of 5 stars The Song of the Flowers.......2005-03-27

While The Black Tulip lacks the swashbuckling, derring-do adventures of the other Dumas novels I have read, it is every bit as enjoyable to read.

Beginning with the arrest of two brothers, deemed traitors to the throne, Dumas Holland-based story at least begins with as strong a conflict as his other more action-laced novels. But the story, while shifting focus to the Godson of one of the men arrested, concerns his passion and pursuit of the highly coveted black tulip, a strain of Holland's most popular horticultural export. Cornelius van Baerle, a man of comfortable means, is little concerned with his wealth, or with position; or at all suspicious of the papers left in his care by his Godfather prior to his arrest. M. van Baerle has but one pursuit, one goal, and one dream...to produce a flawless, rare black tulip.

Thus his downfall, as an avaricious neighbor,Isaac Boxtel, shares this dream, but for entirely different reasons. While Cornelius van Baerle cares not for the riches and fame associated with growing such a flower, Boxtel covets both and plots to eliminate his competition and abscond with the delicate blossom which will net him one hundred thousand florins, more than enough to live like the King himself.

M. van Baerle is, therefore, convicted of treason when Boxtel reveals the existence of the papers of va Baerle's godfather to the authorities, and M. van Baerle finds himself on the wrong side of prison bars.

However, the appearance of an unexpected love awakens passions in Cornelius to rival those he feels for the black tulip, and ignites a desire in him to share the possible wealth associated with the flower, simply to assure it's development and care.

Thus, the race is on to plant, grow, and deliver the black tulip to the Horticultural Society.

Dumas' writing skills are in fine form with this shorter novel, sparing none of the humor, grace, and elegance of other works of his I have indulged in. And while foils are left in scabbards, no plots to overthrow a corrupt Cardinal materialize, and revenge is not sought against the bad-guys...this novel is every bit as exciting.

A fine way to experience one of France's most prolific historical authors for the first time, or to further explore his catalogue of works.

4 out of 5 stars informative, interesting, a good read.......2006-09-24

Although it becomes slightly uneven towards the end, Mr. Bearden has crafted an entertaining book that I recommend for anyone. He blends his experience with the CIA with a great plot (which falters ever so slightly towards the end). His characters a developed well-enough for his tale, without too much detail or boredom. His conversations never appear stilted or unrealistic, but instead, he manages to capture the moment on several levels. On top of all of this, he neither writes down to the reader, nor does he insult the reader's intelligence. Better yet, his subtle approach to some issues and careful crafting is so nicely done, that you find yourself cheering for some of the characters while wishing serious bodily harm to others. Best of all, he shows just how crazy our world is. A very fine job, Mr. Bearden. But damn you, sir, your book kept me up all night until I finished.

I would lover to read a book by him on the current IraqNam fiasco.

5 out of 5 stars Prescient Page Turner.......2004-09-06

Milt Bearden has written what is arguably the best description of "The Great Game." The stage is set in Afghanistan, as the CIA, KGB, and mujahadeen are all interwoven in an intricate web of detail and suspense. Great novel; interesting to see Aldrich Ames briefly mentioned in the beginning during an interrogation scene, and several references are noted as to what the Afghan freedom fighters might do after this latest chapter of the Game has past--no doubt Bearden saw the danger of training these men, then letting them loose on their benefactors (the US) several years after helping them gain their independence. A must read for anyone wanting to feel the adrenaline rush of facing down the Soviet Bear in an austere environment, and bringing them to their knees thru sheer willpower (and the help of a few hunderd Stinger missiles). . .

4 out of 5 stars a great thriller.......2004-06-09

Written by a career CIA operations officer, Bearden knows what he is writing about, and his craftsmanship shows. The story is set during the waning days of the Cold War, the Soviet Union struggling in Afghanistan as a former CIA officer takes the initiative to "stick it" to the Russians, while pursuing an agenda of his own. This latter, parallel story line is what prevents this book from receiving 5 stars.

The internal politicking and maneuvering, the over-seas recriutment and "dancing" between intelligence officers, the operational strategizing are riveting and will certainly keep you turning pages. Bearden's personal experience shines here, and for those who wish to get an idea of what the covert arm of the CIA does, it is an interesting glimpse of what "human intelligence" is about.

However the book's weakness is the contrived plot device of a relative who works for the KGB, and coincidentally is also working in Afghanistan. I felt it detracted from the story rather than added to it, and saw it as an unnecessary distraction. Perhaps it was included out of concerns of upsetting the CIA; maybe the author thought the story wasn't good enough without a "family tie." Either way it didn't feel "authentic" and didn't quite fit.

However, _Black Tulip_ is a great read, certainly on par with the best of the spy-thriler authors, and better than most. Recommended.

3 out of 5 stars So-so thriller.......2003-08-09

The Black Tulip is a military suspense novel about the CIA assistance to Afghanistan during its war with the Soviet Union. This book is somewhat like a flat soda; the flavor is there, but there's something critical missing that limits your enjoyment.

In the book's case, the problem is the characters. Bearden shows that he is decent with description and with plotting, but his characters are insubstantial and never really evoke any feelings. The story also hinges on a major coincidence involving the relationship between two of the protagonists...indeed, even Bearden occasionally seems uncomfortable with this coincidence.

This is not a bad book. This is not a good book. While Bearden appears to have the beginnings of being a good writer, he is not there yet; perhaps he is better with non-fiction, but in fiction, he still has work to do.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Read about a Fascinating Subject.......2002-12-27

I would remind a previous reviewer, who bemoaned the lack of character development in this novel, that each book has its place and its readers. If you want great literature, go to a different section of the bookstore. Don't ask this adventure/history book to do it all, because no book (or only a rare great one) can do that. Be realistic. This book is outstanding for what it does -- describe in wonderful detail the secret CIA war in Afghanistan. There's outstanding action and lots of interesting characters.

Also unlike a previous reviewer who bemoans how long it took for this novel to reach the shelves, and suggets that it is out of date, I would like to gently suggest that knowing history -- even if it is history of the 1980s--eons ago!--is extremely helpful to my understanding of a critical period in world history, leading up to the collapse of the Soviet Union. That story will never be out of date!

Overall, this is a great read and very informative.

5 out of 5 stars A vibrant story - the best of the Girls of Many Lands books.......2005-08-07

Before reading Leyla: The Black Tulip, my favorite of the Girls of Many Lands was Cécile. However, I enjoyed Leyla's story so much that Leyla is my new favorite.
Laleena is a twelve-year-old girl living in the country of Georgia with her mother and brothers. To give her family the money they have needed desperately since her father went missing in war, Laleena sells herself into an arranged marriage, only to find that she has been tricked into selling herself into slavery. She finds herself being taken to the harem of the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul, Turkey, where she is given the Turkish name Leyla. In the Topkapi Palace, Leyla finally discovers her destiny.
I enjoyed the vibrant descriptions of harem life, and loved getting to know the characters - Princess Fatma, Leyla's friends Belkis and Lena, and Leyla's family. I recommend this to girls who are interested in historical fiction, or have enjoyed books from the American Girl or Girls of Many Lands collections.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2005-07-28

This book is about the long lost world of the harem that many people might not know about the turkish worlds of the sultans and servants I knew about it very little before I read this book but since my family is from Istanbul,Turkey i knew few. It`s about this girl named Laleena (which soon gets changed into Leyla!) who suffers from her family`s money problems after her father leaves her and her family to go off to a war. Laleena tries to help to help her family by going on a great adventure to Turkey where she becomes a servant, makes friends, and finds her true destiny. Overall this is a great book to read and I just get stop reading it over and over again it shows the true world of the ottaman empire before it was lost in the war for years.

Leyla the Black Tulip
By Alev Lytle Croutier
Historical Fiction
Character Trait

"How could they have done this to me?" Wondered twelve year old Laleena. "Tricked me like this, turning me into a slave?" This book is about twelve year old Laleena and how her life got turned topsy turvy. When her father disappered Laleena sold herself and became a slave. But as time passes she gets to do the two things she loves to do most, planting tulips, and painting art. But she still misses her entire family. Will Laleena ever find her father? Will she ever see her family again? Read the book and see!

Laleena's personality changes throughout the book. At the beginning of the book Laleena is helpful around the house by doing chores, planting tulips and seeing what colors they will turn. She doesn't feel her inner freedom even thought she is surely free. She is a caring and kind person because in the book she thinks about her family first by selling herself so her poor family can have money for a long, long time. In the end of the book she still is caring and kind by following the rules even though she doesn't like the rules. She is also elegant because she learns to be more ladylike which was considered elegant in 1720.

Even thought the book is historical fiction, I felt like this was really happening and I felt like I was Laleena and my life got all topsey turvey and I was going through all of that trouble. I recommend this book for girls ages 9-15 who want to learn something about the past but don't like reading non-fiction. Reading this book gave me knowledge but in a fun way.

                Book Description

The thousands of mergers, acquisitions, and start-ups that have characterized the past ten years of business have created an increasing number of corporations in financial trouble: specifically, a shortage of venture capital or quick cash. Consequently, bankruptcy protection is now viewed as a strategic move to protect corporations from their creditors and allow them to reorganize. Bankruptcy and Insolvency Taxation, Third Edition provides the answers to the questions financial managers will have on the tax aspects of the "bankruptcy strategy."

                  Book Description

This coursebook takes a finance-oriented approach to corporate bankruptcy and can be used either in basic Bankruptcy courses (that do not attend to individual bankruptcy) or in advanced Bankruptcy courses. The student will learn not only the major elements of corporate reorganization in chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Code, but also the major facets of bankruptcy that influence financing transactions. The hidden message behind these materials is how to understand complex financial deal-making and how to integrate finance with law, in the context of bankruptcy.

                  Book Description

Includes a combination of explanatory text, cases, and problems that permit the professor to use either a problem-based approach or a more traditional case-based approach. Ample explanatory text orients students to the issues and helps them bring a basic understanding of the material to each class session. Most of the problems and much of the explanatory text are based on a continuing hypothetical case of Foam Corporation, a distressed manufacturer. The goal is to provide a concrete setting for the application of bankruptcy law and the consideration of bankruptcy policy.

                  4 out of 5 stars A solid Chapter 11 Hornbook.......2007-01-26

This is a well written hornbook for those law students seeking to get their arms around Chapter 11 reorganizations. The concepts that one needs to master to understand business reorganizations can be especially difficult for law students. If you are taking a class in Chapter 11 reorganizations, this is a hornbook worth having. For a general overview of bankruptcy concepts, including Chapters 7 and 13, I recommend professor Epstein's Nutshell Series book on Bankruptcy.

4 out of 5 stars Good book for comprehensive bankruptcy Course.......2006-12-04

Good book if you are taking a comprehensive bankruptcy course. Initially seems daunting, but by the time you complete the book you will have an excellent overall understanding of bankruptcy. Possibly overkill for basic bankruptcy course.
