From "Rocket Summer" to "The Million-Year Picnic," Ray Bradbury's stories of the colonization of Mars form an eerie mesh of past and future. Written in the 1940s, the chronicles drip with nostalgic atmosphere--shady porches with tinkling pitchers of lemonade, grandfather clocks, chintz-covered sofas. But longing for this comfortable past proves dangerous in every way to Bradbury's characters--the golden-eyed Martians as well as the humans. Starting in the far-flung future of 1999, expedition after expedition leaves Earth to investigate Mars. The Martians guard their mysteries well, but they are decimated by the diseases that arrive with the rockets. Colonists appear, most with ideas no more lofty than starting a hot-dog stand, and with no respect for the culture they've displaced.
Bradbury's quiet exploration of a future that looks so much like the past is sprinkled with lighter material. In "The Silent Towns," the last man on Mars hears the phone ring and ends up on a comical blind date. But in most of these stories, Bradbury holds up a mirror to humanity that reflects a shameful treatment of "the other," yielding, time after time, a harvest of loneliness and isolation. Yet the collection ends with hope for renewal, as a colonist family turns away from the demise of the Earth towards a new future on Mars. Bradbury is a master fantasist and The Martian Chronicles are an unforgettable work of art. --Blaise Selby

A Great Book.......2007-08-25
I love this best of all Bradbury's books. At times eerie, sometimes ironic, always captivating, this collection of short stories forged into a single novel tells science fiction as it should be, colored by the non-cynical hopes for the future still in full bloom during its Golden Age.
Just Boring.......2007-08-13
I thought it was funny that, when commenting on the TV Miniseries adaptation of this book, Bradbury said it was "just boring" because that is what I thought of the book.
This is not one consistent and connected story, but rather a collection of short stories about the future history of a Mars colonization. Anyone who has read "The Illustrated Man" knows that short stories are not Bradbury's strength. Reading this book was like reading a collection of long-lost post-it notes with ideas that popped into Ray's head late at night before he fell asleep.
It's okay, but I wouldn't recommend it to a casual sci-fi or Bradbury fan.
Not Free SF Reader.......2007-08-04
Ray Bradbury's influential collection of Mars stories. Rather dated now of course, particularly as he hung dates on them like 1999,2005, and has 50s cafes and hotdog stands on the red planet. Still worth a look though.

Light On Science...Heavy On Fiction.......2007-07-16
A true masterpiece of the classic science fiction genre. Packed full of interwoven stories that depict a world that is all too familiar. It has the same social impact today as it did when these stories were written. The fact that human nature does not change. Bradbury captures that perfectly in these stories. These are not tales for anyone looking for uplifting, life affirming prose. These tales border on the macbre and deliver it in a way that is often humorous. This book is simply a MUST READ for anyone who loves science fiction. This is not a high-speed, action adventure, sceince fiction read. It will appeal to those who are respectful of the genre and not those looking for a fast high.
Entertaining Collection of short stories.......2007-07-15
Presented is an interesting take on a "futuristic" takeover of Mars by inhabitors of the third planet from the Sun. What transpires is a series of expeditions to Mars by men from America.
They are greeted with everything from murderous rage, indifference, nostalgia, and an extinct planet.
Throughout the tale, which spans a period of 27 years, there are hints of a global breakdown on Earth, which is slowing tearing itself apart.
While an entertaining read, the only complaint that I have is that this reads like a collection of tales, with only slight hints at continuity throughout the novel. Otherwise, I very much recommend this book.

Bradbury's Melancholic Vision of Mars........2007-06-27
"The Martian Chronicles" (1950) was Bradbury's second book to be published and a consecrative one. The author received immediate attention from sci-fi lovers, publishers and general public.
This book is not really a novel, but a collection of short stories describing Mars' colonization, from 1999 till 2026 where Bradbury's future is already our past! Nevertheless it is a mesmerizing piece of literature.
Bradbury writes in poetical prose style. Most of these tales transmits a deep sense of melancholy, as if the author has already passed judgment over Human Kind and found it guilty; guilty of greed, selfishness, short-sightedness and ruthlessness. In other words the same sins showed whenever different human cultures get abruptly in touch.
The initial stories describe the ill-fated initials Human expeditions and their weird relationship with the Martians. "The Third Expedition" is really touching and chilling at the same time.
From then on, Humans are left alone with all Mars at their disposition for better or worse.
Colonization start in earnest as described from "The Settlers" to "The Off Season" while in Earth atomic war menace evolve into actual devastating war.
Bradbury proposes the reader different approaches to the subject: phantasmagoric as in "The Martian" or performing homage to Edgar Allan Poe and criticizing censorship as in "Usher II".
The last tales describe Mars almost depleted of Human life with poignant sadness.
This is not hard sci-fi, it is almost oneiric fantasy, so do not expect strict logic. Relax and let emotions flow free!

Couldn't be more enjoyable.......2007-01-30
I would have to say that reading this book was one the most enjoyable book reading experiences of my life. I can't think of too many books that kept me in such a constant state of total immersion and pure enjoyment then this one. Everything about it sings out originality and, as mentioned, enjoyment. Seekers of deep reading pleasure need look no further, I have your book.
Bittersweet nostalgia from an alternate future..........2006-03-09
_Ray Bradbury clearly carried the Western Frontier of Walt Whitman and Horace Greely to the Martian Frontier in this classic novel. If 1950's America would have had the rocket ships, and an inhabitable destination, planetary colonization would probably have gone very much like this. As the text says:" They were coming with small dreams or large dreams or none at all. But a government finger pointed from four-color posters in many towns:THERE'S WORK FOR YOU IN THE SKY: SEE MARS!" Heck, I'd go right now if I could.
_His Mars is the essense of the wild frontier: the path finders, the pioneers, the pilgrims, the homesteaders, the townsfolk, the eccentrics- and then the bureaucrats.... Bradbury's Martians are haunting and tragic- and fare about as well as the Plains Indians in the face of "progress."
_Actually, this story parallels the story of American West a little too closely- especially when it talks of the "silent towns." If you've ever seen the dead and dieing farm towns of the plains you know what I mean.
A word of caution- many "hard" science fictions fans do not like Bradbury. That is because he is a poet and a magician weaving a rare, ephemeral atmosphere. Do you have the sensitivity and the soul to follow?

Classic sci-fi story.......2006-01-03
This is a clear and concise introduction to Bradbury's important sci-fi novel. It's well written and easy to understand, as with all the Monarch Notes I've seen. It covers all the important aspects of the work, including characterization, mood, plot, themes, and other topics, as well as some of Bradbury's personal history and background.
Bradbury's Mars reminds me of something out of a Ronald Reagan fantasy--a world where people sit on porch swings and sip mint juleps after a hard day's work in the fields while the aroma of Grandma's homemade cookies wafts out the window. Considered as a sci-fi classic there really isn't much science here and not much in the way of plot either, but as a collection of mood pieces dripping with nostalgia for a vanished way of life that has somehow been transplanted to Mars, this book is without peer.
A personal side note here--I heard Ray Bradbury speak once when they brought him to my junior high school in West Los Angelos 35 years ago. He's a good speaker, actually, and a bit of an eccentric. For example, he admits to being deathly afraid of flying and therefore drives a car everywhere. But he said he would get on a spaceship tomorrow and fly to Mars if he could--something surely more dangerous than a typical plane flight.
Anyway, Bradbury himself turned out to be quite a character, and perhaps some of that gets into his stories like this one. The Martian Chronicles shows Bradbury at his best, in a story that ranks as one of the greatest mood pieces in science-fiction and as a story of a people's hopeful, romantic, but failed vision of a new life in a new and unknown world.

A dish of lime-vanilla ice, please........2006-03-08
_While this story takes place in an Illinois Town of the 1920's, if you were born in a small to mid-sized town anywhere in North America, fifty years before or after, you will recognise much of the settings and feelings in this book. Bradbury captures eternal youth here, as only his poetic, Zen-like writing style can manage. The only other book that really equals it in this respect is Twain's _Huckleberry Finn_.
_There are small things in these stories that tug at your childhood memories and at your forgotten childhood soul (remember when you still had a soul, before you sold it?) I truly wonder at times if memories like this are still being made in the kind of post-modern world we've created for our children...
_Personally, I see this book, and its appreciation or non appreciation, as a marker indicator between Old America and the New America.

Winner of the Turner Tomorrow Fellowship, Daniel Quinn's
Ishmael is a bestseller and a testament for a burgeoning spiritual movement. Now Quinn presents an extraordinary sequel, a companion novel so startlingly original that even Ishmael's most faithful readers will not predict its outcome....
When Ishmael places an advertisement for pupils with "an earnest desire to save the world," he does not expect a child to answer him. But twelve-year-old Julie Gerchak is undaunted by Ishmael's reluctance to teach someone so young, and convinces him to take her on as his next student. Ishmael knows he can't apply the same strategies with Julie that he used with his first pupil, Alan Lomax--nor can he hope for the same outcome. But young Julie proves that she is ready to forge her own spiritual path--and arrive at her own destination. And when the time comes to choose a pupil to carry out his greatest mission yet, Ishmael makes a daring decision--a choice that just might change the world.

Ishmael review.......2007-09-09
The book came in a timely mannner in excellent condition. I thought both the purchase price and shipping costs were reasonable and definitely better than the college bookstore's pricing.
new tribal revolution.......2007-07-08
although quinn once again is tackling ideas that are taken for granted in society, in My Ishmael he shows what we can actually do to help save the world(from oursleves that is). The new tribal revolution is simply a paradigm shift about how the benefits of a business are to flow throughout its members-equally instead of unequally.
tribalism is the social organization which has proved to be most effective through human development by trial and error. inside My Ishmael Quinn unlocks the tribal treasury which all who embrace tribalism. do it. tribalism can essential take us from being an individual based society to a group of real communities.
Civilization Trashed.......2007-05-27
An outstanding account of how power came to the hands of a few!
This book will change your life.......2007-02-20
Enlightening! Emotional! Uplifting! One of the greatest authors and books of the times.
My Ishmael by Daniel Quinn.......2007-01-03
Overall, the book made you think about the individual stories that were explained throught the book. Each story builds on the previous one, which helps make the stories easier to understand. The facts that Quinn put in the book made the theories seem like they could work. Once getting past that their is a talking gorilla, the book is good. I enjoyed reading it. My Ishmael is the sequel to Ishmael.

An excellent introduction to Islam for Christian readers........2004-12-13
This book is an excellent first book for those not familiar with Islam and those who practice it. Origins of Islam and a rather complete discussion of this religion then and now are valuable parts of this work by two editors who obviously have an extensive background to back up their work.
I liked the coverage of Islamic law and the description of the worship rituals and prayers. This is a must for the library of anyone who works with, deals with or lives near Muslims in this country. I showed it to some of my friends who practice Islam and they were delighted to know such a book exists.
An excellent, well-balanced view of Islam.......2000-10-31
It is unfortunate that this book is now out of print. I bought it several years ago and it was a wonderful learning experience to read it. It does not simply show how Islam is "wrong", but it is written froma Christian perspective, so it does effectively compare and contrast these two major faiths.
Beginning with some simple facts about Islam's beliefs and practices, it moves into various ways that an Christian can effectively dialogue and witness to Muslims. There is an emphasis placed on understanding where they come from and how to reach them on their turf.
There are so few well balanced books on Islam and we needws more books like these!
