Book Description
The graduating seniors of a Seven Sisters college, trying to decide whether to pattern themselves after Katharine Hepburn or Emily Dickinson. Two young women besieged by the demands of mothers, lovers, and careers—not to mention a highly persistent telephone answering machine—as they struggle to have it all. A brilliant feminist art historian trying to keep her bearings and her sense of humor on the elevator ride from the radical sixties to the heartless eighties.
Wendy Wasserstein's characters are so funny, so many-sided, and so real that we seem to know them from their Scene One entrances, though the places they go are invariably surprising. And these three plays—Uncommon Women and Others, Isn't It Romantic, and the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Heidi Chronicles—manage to engage us heart, mind, and soul on such a deep and lasting level that they are already recognized as classics of the modern theater.
Customer Reviews:
Stories we all know, told by a master.......2005-02-15
Wendy Wasserstein is truly a master of contemporary theater. This collection, anchored of course by "The Heidi Chronicles," attests to this fact. Although I agree with the other reviewers that plays are meant to be seen, Wasserstein is literary enough to be enjoyed just if you sit down and read it. She is brilliant without being verbose, intellectual without being cumbersome, and witty while retaining a level of respectability. Truly a treasure of American culture.
I will most address "The Heidi Chronicles." Hands down, it is my favorite play ever. Of course, you don't know me from Adam, so I will extrapolate. The character of Heidi Holland is so likable, and so compelling simply because she is so unremarkable. She is an Everywoman, which seems unappealing unless you understand how rare it is for playwrights to create an Everywoman. Playwrights typically write for men, women are usually afterthoughts in plays. I know this from experience as an actress (kindly don't hold my profession against me, we can't help our attention whoring and really we are quite intelligent as a group). In Heidi Holland, we all can find a personal truth, something that has not existed in female characters in theater. Up until very recently, they have been complete charicatures or waifish ingenues. Wendy Wasserstein revolutionized the theater, and her Pulitzer is well deserved.
Of course, one can go on and on about signifigance, but that does not necessarily make the play enjoyable. I assure you, this one most definitely is. Wasserstein has a sharp wit a la Oscar Wilde, only more natural and less affected. The characters in this play are people that I promise you, you know. Another brilliant thing which is really lost in reading it but you can pick up on if you read the stage directions is the multiple casting. It's this beautiful idea where the extraneous characters are played by the same two actresses, giving this sense that throughout your entire life, you keep seeing the same people. So very very true.
I recommend this play to theater lovers, book lovers, women, men, people, animals, anyone with the ability to understand language. You will enjoy it. Another author who you might enjoy is Binnie Kirshenbaum. She is a novelist, not a playwright, but her work seems somewhat similar to Wasserstein's. Her latest novel "An Almost Pefect Moment" is absolutely fantastic, totally compelling. Both authors deserve your time and attention. Trust me, you won't be disappointed.
Plays are for performance.......2001-12-22
The Heidi Chronicles is a fabulous play that so many "open the door for yourself" women can relate to. However, this as well as all of Wasserstein's plays miss the point if they are only read. The true nuances in the text lend themsleves to being performed. Without seeing the play performed, you still do not have a true grasp of the story.
Heidi Chronicles and other plays.......1999-12-23
Heidi is the girl we all want to grow up and be or for our daughters to grow up and be. She has the strength of character that in no way makes her sacrifice charm and romance. A head turning, thought-provoking, ideal story for all of us. It is something we can achieve even if life passes us a hard lot. This shows that life can be fun at any age.
Exceptional Growth Process of the Author.......1999-10-09
Having read this book, I can certainly understand why Wendy Wasserstein has made an established name for herself. The three plays are a testament to Ms Wasserstein's talent, with each play exhibiting more insight and depth. Would love to see these plays performed.

Boomer quirks.......2007-05-05
The late Wendy Wasserstein wrote this amusing play. Reading it one is reminded of Eugene McCarthy's campaign for President and women's groups consciousness-raising sessions. The play consists of a number of scenes, vignettes, taking place at one or two year intervals, as the same baby-boomer characters meet life challenges. The humor is wonderful and the subject matter is memory-charged.
Heidi Holland, an easterner from Chicago, (get the joke?), is attending graduate school at Yale. She has the sometimes interest of a man she met in the McCarthy campaign. The other women in the group feel she is insufficiently liberated, but that she has the potential to be, in the jargon of our time, politically correct. In another instance Heidi and Peter Patrone, her fiancee, a pediatrician, are attending the marriage of Scoop, a former beau of Heidi, and Lisa Friedlander, an illustrator. Scoop tells Heidi that Lisa is not an A plus like Heidi but that Lisa is the best he can do. Heidi's gift, a crock pot, is not to Scoop's liking.
In Act II Heidi is lecturing on Lilla Cabot Perry, an American Impressionist painter. Lisa, very pregnant, is having a baby shower. Heidi arrives late. She has been living in England. The friends speak of a family whose child did not get into the kindergarten at the Ethical Culture Society and so the whole family is in therapy. In 1982 Heidi and friends appear on TV. The topics presented include women in the arts and the Sixties. Scoop Rosenbaum is editor of the BOOMER magazine. (The name Scoop, of course, has to do with the fact that he claims he is a journalist.) Scoop remarks portentiously that hearing his own children pulls him out of any "me generation" residue. Susan and Heidi meet for lunch. It seems that Peter and Scoop monopolized the TV program and we learn that Peter and Heidi didn't marry. In the lunch scene Susan speaks of a boy friend and Heidi does too. Heidi is doing a small show of Lilla Cabot Perry's work. Susan tells her that in L.A. everyone creates his own story, (title, THE HEIDI CHRONICLES).
Two years later Heidi is speaking to the Miss Crain's Association as an alumna. Heidi tells of her trip to the gym and how she is embarassed in front of and envious of every woman present. She allows that she hasn't been happy for some time. The following year Heidi accepts a position to teach at Carleton College. Before setting out to the Midwest Heidi sees Peter at his hospital. It seems that the AIDS crisis, having great impact among his friends and acquaintances, has made it seem to him that sadness is a luxury.
My review may have made this play seem hopelessly self-referential, but it is not. Wasserstein was too accomplished a playwright to fall into such a trap.
"I don't have a life. I'm expendable.".......2005-02-10
Heidi Holland, with an Ivy League education and a Fulbright in England under her belt, is a lecturer in art history, an expert on female artists virtually unknown in their lifetimes, though their work is as good as that of the male painters who dominated their ages. Using the art history "hook" into the question of women and their roles--as they see their roles, as men see women's roles, and as women search for happiness within these roles--Wendy Wasserstein has written a thoughtful and very funny drama about the Baby Boom generation and the price its women have paid as they have searched for fulfillment.
Exploring Heidi Holland's life from the late 1960s to the 1990s, Wasserstein takes us from Heidi's high school and college days, as she grows in her thinking and view of her role in life, to her experiences with women's lib focus groups, the Eugene McCarthy campaign, the rise of AIDS, the gay movement, and ultimately Heidi's realization of what is important to her, not just professionally and philosophically, but personally and emotionally.
Wasserstein uses wit and a keen ear for dialogue to create quick, often humorous interchanges which advance the action and the feminist message without polemics. Heidi is, on the surface, a success by all external measurements, but she feels that she is missing something from her life. Professional success is not enough for her, a revelation that made this play somewhat controversial within the women's movement when it was first produced in 1988. Some feminists apparently believed Heidi's desire for emotional fulfillment through love to be a sellout to a male dominated culture.
Wasserstein emphasizes that women should be able to pursue both professional success and a personal life, however, and the rounded character of Heidi remains a nice contrast to the more strident and sometimes hostile female characters with whom she interacts on stage. Throughout the action, the play's high humor and absurdity are nicely balanced with scenes of sentiment and sorrowful revelation, and Wasserstein maintains her light touch without trivializing the issues. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1989, the play offers insights into significant social issues, gracefully presented so that they do not alienate the audience. Mary Whipple
An Awesome Play.......2005-02-06
This play is very good that is why it won the Pulitzer Prize. It is all about Heidi discovering who she is and she fits in tha world that is always changing. IT shows the different things that have happened in her life and all of the people who have made her who she is. If you have not read it you should. :)
Not At All Interesting.......2004-06-26
The most interesting thing about this play is the title.
Product Description
The Heidi Chronicles is a perceptived and funny play that charts the 1965 through 1980s experiences of a feminist art historian and her friends and lovers. With painful hilarity, we follow Heidi Holland through the decline and fall of '60-isms -- from campaigning for Eugene McCarthy to challenging male bias to consciousness-raising. Along the way we meet her "family." There's captivating Scoop Rosenbaum, Heidi's on and off lover, who switches political ideologies and girlfriends and becomes the founder of Boomer, an influential lifestyle magazine. There's handsome Peter Patrone, Heidi's witty high school comrade -- a successful pediatrician who retains his idealism and remains her soulmate. And there are Heidi's women friends, the sisters who share her ups and downs and her determination to march into the 21st century. Includes photographs from the theatre set.

Alice knows she should be happy. A charming twenty-eight-year-old with a successful catering business, she’s always dreamed of a rose-covered cottage in the English countryside, filled with children and animals and home-cooked meals. Her favorite attire is comfy jeans, her best manicure features garden dirt under the nails. But when her teenage crush—the wealthy, dashing man-about-town Joe Chambers—wants to make her his bride, Alice is more than willing to play Cinderella to Joe’s prince. Never mind that he wants her to change—a diet, ice-blond highlights, stilettos, snooty gallery openings—and that he’s allergic to nature and kids. She tells herself she’s happy to sacrifice for love, and besides, with Joe’s stunning good looks and high-profile career at a top financial firm, every woman in London wants to be in her shoes.
But that’s just the problem. Despite Alice’s efforts to be the perfect wife, Joe soon reveals a penchant for being hopelessly unfaithful. When a notorious indiscretion with a female colleague forces Joe to transfer to New York, Alice’s life turns upside down. As Joe continues to sneak around, and her best friend’s beau offers a tempting glimpse of what real love could be like, Alice must decide how much Cinderella she can take before her deepest desires win out—and if she can summon up the courage to find real happiness on her own.

Pretty good.......2007-08-15
Short book but I liked it. I really wanted to slap Alice and be like OPEN YOUR EYES!!! HE'S A SCUMBAG!! It was hard to read because of my feelings on cheating and whatnot. But still a good book and I really liked the ending.
An interesting look into one woman's journey to self.......2007-06-05
To what extent will a woman go to preserve the illusion around her? How far will she drift from her true self before she begins to paddle back to shore? This is the story of a wife living a carefully balanced life--of contrived appearances and comfort on one side...fear and complacency on the other. By tipping that scale, she finds satisfaction and fulfillment.
Surprisingly poignant .......2007-05-22
This book was in my to-read stack for about a year before I ever picked it up. This wasn't because I didn't want to read it-it's just that of all the books by this author I have read I only really liked one of them (that was "Jemima J" which is very good actually) and found the others to be, frankly, quite badly written (especially "Mr. Maybe".) But finally I picked this one up, expecting it to be a quick, uncomplicated read. I was wrong.
This book is actually a very in-depth exploration of marriage and infidelity. I was honestly surprised at poignant and sweet it was. This isn't the story of a wife who finds who finds out her husband is cheating on her and falls apart, it's the story of a wife who catered to her husbands every whim because she was terrified of losing him and then found herself again. And it's not corny or lifetime movie-ish at all. Quite a feat really.
It took me several days to read this, and I enjoyed it. I recommend it.
Four stars.
A Daring Character Study.......2007-04-09
This novel starts out dark with a very unlikable character. By the end, you'll see what was motivating him and cheer as he changes.
Chick-Lit with Heart.......2006-11-21
Jane Green has yet again produced an enticing romantic chick-lit novel. Alice, our main character, is the perfect trophy wife living in London. She has given up everything that she once called herself to be with her husband, including her dreams of living in the country with a large family. When event cause the couple to move to New York she finally gets her chance to live in the country (when they buy a house in Connecticut). As Alice spends more time in the country, a Joe spends more time in the city; Alice finds herself and what she most wants in life.
As far as chick-lit goes, I found this to be better than Bridget Jones, Edge of Reason. If you enjoy this genre of book, I can guarantee you'll love this novel.

First Exposure-Late Bloomer.......2007-01-17
'To Have And To Hold' was my first ever African American love story I ever read, sad I know. But I am so grateful for the chance. I read that book in one weekend, twice. It was filled with adventure, excitement, history and lots of female male sizzle. I could not wait to read more about other stories by Janice Sims. Purchased every last one of them from 'Affairs of the Heart' to 'Constant Craving'. 'To Have And To Hold' is special to me but I cherish all of Ms. Sims stories. All of them are great love stories with some "flava". I suggest everyone check them out just for the fun of it.
. . . From This Day Forward.......2007-01-10
Wonderful! "To Have And To Hold" is truly a wonderful book of love, romance, excitement, danger and suspense all tied in one. It is Solange's and Rupert's story. It is fiery hot -- H-O-T -- HOT, HOT, HOT!!! The pages are "burning" hot. Solange's dreams are at a peak in this book. After finding the "man of her dreams" in "For Your Love" she and Rupert are now preparing for another step in life, their marriage and to be bound forever together. However, they must get over the "hurdle" before the "I Do's" are said. After their adventures, will they spend the rest of their days in wedded bliss or will they forever be looking over their shoulders? "To Have And To Hold" is a rewarding story of love and trust. Ms. Sims not only reacquaint us with Toni Shaw and her family, but she kept all the excitement still going. Good book.
Okay,...I'm feeling it!.......2006-02-12
Although I didn't read the previous editions, I really enjoyed the story. I don't necessarily agree with everyone elses reviews about it being so HOT and steamy. Those love scenes were decent, nothing to get excited about. But I loved the suspense, Ms Sims does keep you going. At least till the end. I felt like I was ripped off! I get to the last 5 pages and all kinds of stuff happens. It felt like it was rushed..so it doesn't match with the beginning of the story. I was very disappointed! Very...but all in all it was a great read.
To Have and To Hold.......2004-07-26
'To have and to hold' are words archaeologist Solange Dupree had
virtually pushed to the back of her mind. And there was good reason
to feel that way, or so she thought.
Solange was engaged to a man who wanted to leave a legacy and when he
learns she could not have children he ended the engagement. She divorces
herself of amorous feelings and becomes engrossed in her work. While
on a dangerous trip to Ethiopia, Solange meets insurance investigator
Rupert Giles, and finds a man who fulfills her dreams. Rupert is not
concerned that she has a medical condition, so for Solange love is
renewed and she has a five-carat diamond on her ring finger as evidence
of his love.
But Rupert has a secret, and the repercussions from it could cost them
more than their love, it could end their lives. Solange finds out
Rupert is something other than an insurance investigator, and that
someone is trying to kill her and she is filled with apprehension. When
her ex-fiancé resurfaces, she and Rupert must confront their fear of
never exchanging vows and finding their happily-ever-after.
Again Ms. Sims has blended an excellent combination of science, intrigue
and romance in a way that puts readers on the edge of their seats as
they root for the culmination of an age-old ritual. The story is tender
and erotic, and readers will realize TO HAVE AND TO HOLD has taken
emotional and physical romance to another level. Those familiar with her
writing will not be disapointed and readers new to the fold will enjoy a
sensual tale.

The sexiest book of all times.......2004-06-14
I have been an avid reader of Mrs.Sims' books for as long as I can remember and I can honestly say that I have never been disappointed to date.To Have and to Hold has to be THE sexiest,MOST loving book of all times.I cried and laughed out loud so much during my read, that my husband took the book away from me.After he finished reading it himself,he returned it.Needless to say,he liked the bathroom scene.P
I have read plenty of books but To Have and to Hold has been a more satisfying read.It lacked nothing. You had your suspense, romance, comedy and the best sex scenes I have ever read. The only thing I hate is to see Rupert,Solange and Desta leave.I have shared this book with co-workers who have also become fans of Mrs.Sims.
It's my opinion that Janice is unrivaled in talent and I think that she deserves whatever awards and praise she receives. All of her books have been wonderful, but To Have and To Hold is in a class of its own.You are not only getting a good book to read, you are developing some kind of relationship with the characters. When I first read To Have and To Hold,I felt the hurt and the anger as well as the joy and love. Each read only got better.Janice is a great person who writes great books and I can hardly wait for the next adventure.
